The subversion of patriarchy: exploring pastoral care with men in the Church of the Province of South Africa on the East RandBannerman, David Hugh 30 November 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is concerned with pastoral care with men in the Anglican Church. It is grounded in the rapidly changing post-apartheid years in the East Rand region of South Africa.
It seeks to explore through participatory action research the negative effects of patriarchy as a discourse of power and entitlement on the lives of men of differing cultures in South Africa as victims and perpetrators of abuse.
It also seeks to explore ways of pastorally caring with men through the creation of participative care groups that enable personal stories of men to be told, invitations to responsibility for abuse made, and the negative effects of patriarchal cultural and theological discourse deconstructed, and alternate understandings of masculinity constructed and performed.
The work is done from a contextual theology, pro-feminist perspective, and collaborating with postmodern philosophers Derrida and Foucault, the social anthropologist Bruner and the narrative therapists White, Epston and Jenkins. / Practical Theology / M. Hearing all the drums: towards a more inclusive congregationMongwe, Justice Mavanyisi 28 February 2007 (has links)
HEARING ALL THE DRUMS: TOWARDS A MORE INCLUSIVE CONGREGATION is about
increasing the participation of women in positions of both leadership and church
ministry praxis within the Seventh Day Adventist church in South Africa. Women have
been excluded in the office of elder, and have been generally excluded from preaching
during the worship hour.
The research process followed a participatory way of doing research, while using
theories on social construction and post-modernist epistemological approach. The
theologies that inform this work are contextual in nature and include African and
Feminist theologies. In the pursuit for change, however, care is maintained to use
inclusive practices that attempt to avoid polarising the congregation and their
concomitant theologies. / Practical Theology / M.Th. (Pastoral Therapy)

Mapping theological trajectories that emerge in response to a Bible translationNaylor, Mark, 1959- 12 1900 (has links)
This study identifies a theological trajectory of first generation “believers” – those who allow the
biblical text to speak authoritatively into their lives – within the Sindhi community of Pakistan. A
passage from a contemporary translation of the New Testament in the Sindhi language – Luke
15:11-32, Jesus’ Parable of the Two Lost Sons – was presented in interview settings to discover
how Sindhis express their faith as they consider the message of the parable. Culture texts
generated by believers are compared to those generated by “traditional” Muslim Sindhis who do
not accept the Bible as authoritative. Twenty–eight people identified as Sindhi believers were
interviewed as well as twenty traditional Sindhi Muslims. Similarities and contrasts between the
two groups are used to discover how the theological praxis of the believers is being impacted and
how they are adjusting their view of God as they engage scripture. The description of theological
trajectories that diverge from accepted traditional convictions is referred to as “mapping.”
Six themes were identified from the interviews that are important for both groups while
demonstrating distinct contrasts and similarities. The themes are (1) God is
compassionate/kind/merciful/loving beyond our imagination, (2) God forgives his servants who
repent, (3) Concepts of rewards, punishment and the fear of God, (4) The relationship of human
beings with God (child versus servant), (5) Issues of justice, honor and status, and (6) The
importance of obedience to God. An evaluation of the six themes revealed one overarching
trajectory: a shift from a dominant master–servant view of the Divine–human relationship to a father–child paradigm. The research affirms that the shift to a biblically shaped view of God is not
disconnected from previous beliefs, but is based on and shaped by a priori assumptions held by
members of society. Commitment to the Bible as God’s word speaking authoritatively to believers
creates a shift or trajectory of faith so that current perspectives, symbols and metaphors of God are
being reformed and reconfirmed through the believers’ interaction with the Sindhi translation of
scripture. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Th. (Missiology)

Contextual pedagogy : the didactics of pedagogical emancipation within the context of disempowered and marginalised societiesPfaffe, Joachim Friedrich 03 1900 (has links)
The thesis deals with the theoretic concept of Contextual Pedagogy and its application in the context of a disempowered and marginalized society, the Ju/'hoansi ("Bushmen") of Nyae Nyae in North Eastern Namibia.
Contextual Pedagogy derives from the notion of Contextual Theology and is thus initially based on a pedagogical analysis of the KAI ROS-Document, whereby its sociopolitical content and its inherent methodology are being transferred into a context of pedagogy. Referring to theoretical concepts of Critical Theory and Liberation Pedagogy, Conditional Fields are being identified in a first analysis which determine
and explain the pedagogical situation in a colonial context of Apartheid South Africa. During a three-year qualitative field research, central aspects of Contextual Pedagogy are being applied within the framework of the development of a post-colonial and community-based school programme in Nyae Nyae, the Village Schools Project. This school programme comprises a curriculum for a teacher training course as well as a curriculum for Grade 1-3 learners in five selected villages of Nyae Nyae, and is based on the dynamic processes between the communities, the Student Teachers and the author as their Teacher Trainer and Village Schools Co-ordinator. A further theoretical evaluation and reflexion of the field research gives rise to a pedagogical superstructure of Contextual Pedagogy, which also investigates the notions of power, empowerment and over-empowerment within a context of development work. By doing so, the previous Conditional Fields of pedagogic work within a theoretical framework of Contextual Pedagogy become extended in relevance for a pedagogical context of a post-colonial society with special reference to marginalized subjects. In conclusion, the finalization of the research project and its subsequent handing-over process to the Namibian government analyzes the paralyzing effects of an excessive bureaucracy, and the resurgence of conservative and colonial thought in the young and fragile democracy of Namibia. / Educational Studies / D.Ed.(Didactics)

Radical Christianity in the Holy Land : a comparative study of liberation and contextual theology in Palestine-IsraelKuruvilla, Samuel Jacob January 2009 (has links)
Palestine is known as the birthplace of Christianity. However the Christian population of this land is relatively insignificant today, despite the continuing institutional legacy that the 19th century Western missionary focus on the region created. Palestinian Christians are often forced to employ politically astute as well as theologically radical means in their efforts to appear relevant within an increasingly Islamist-oriented society. My thesis focuses on two ecumenical Christian organisations within Palestine, the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Centre in Jerusalem (headed by the Anglican cleric Naim Stifan Ateek) and Dar Annadwa Addawliyya (the International Centre of Bethlehem-ICB, directed by the Lutheran theologian Mitri Raheb). Based on my field work (consisting of an in-depth familiarisation with the two organisations in Palestine and interviews with their directors, office-staff and supporters worldwide, as well as data analyses based on an extensive literature review), I argue that the grassroots-oriented educational, humanitarian, cultural and contextual theological approach favoured by the ICB in Bethlehem is more relevant to the Palestinian situation, than the more sectarian and Western-oriented approach of the Sabeel Centre. These two groups are analysed primarily according to their theological-political approaches. One, (Sabeel), has sought to develop a critical Christian response to the Palestine-Israel conflict using the politico-theological tool of liberation theology, albeit with a strongly ecumenical Western-oriented focus, while the other (ICB), insists that its theological orientation draws primarily from the Levantine Christian (and in their particular case, the Palestinian Lutheran) context in which Christians in Israel-Palestine are placed. Raheb of the ICB has tried to develop a contextual theology that seeks to root the political and cultural development of the Palestinian people within their own Eastern Christian context and in light of their peculiarly restricted life under an Israeli occupation regime of over 40 years. In the process, I argue that the ICB has sought to be much more situationally relevant to the needs of the Palestinian people in the West Bank, given the employment, socio-cultural and humanitarian-health opportunities opened up by the practical-institution building efforts of this organisation in Bethlehem.

Wenn Kirche ihre Stadt versteht : eine empirisch-theologische Untersuchung der Kontextanalyse am Beispiel der Kirche für Bonn / When the church understands its city : an empirical-theological study of context analysis using the example of Kirche fűr Bonn (Church for Bonn)Schwindt, Erwin 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the context analysis as a method for missional church ministry. The focus is on the question how groups of vol-unteers from the Kirche für Bonn perceive and evaluate the context analysis. The discussion of contextual theology serves as a theological derivation. The cycle of society-relevant church ministry is then explained, which is a theoretical foundation as well as a practical guide for the ministry of the Kirche für Bonn. On the basis of an empirical-theological cycle of practice a qualitative study of a group discussion is conducted and analyzed by the documentary method. The results lead to theses and guidelines for the use of context analysis. In addition, the study aims to provide a missiological contribution by bringing the results into a dialog with contextual theology and proposing context analysis as an ad-equate method for the missional practice of the church. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Evangelikal-Radikal-Sozialkritisch: zur Theologie der radikalen Evangelikalen : eine kritische W[232}urdigung = The theology of radical evangelicalismHardmeier, Roland 31 May 2006 (has links)
Text in German / The present dissertation considers the historical and theological foundations of radical evangelicalism
and puts it in the context of theologies which influenced it and are similar to it. It will be demonstrated
that the evangelicals are enriched by radical evangelicalism - an evangelical basic concept with elements
of anabaptism, the social gospel, liberation theology and the ecumencial theologies. Thus it will
be demonstrated that radical theology is genuinely evangelical, yet is capable of overcoming the one
sidedness of western evangelical theology. Special attention is given to the contributions of radicals
from North America as well as from Latin America since they are of considerable importance to radical
evangelicalism.
The aim of the dissertation is to present radical evangelicalism, to critically evaluate it, and to make it
profitable to the European evangelical scene. The first section names the sources from which radical
theology flowed. The second section reviews the historical development of radical evangelicalism. It
will be demonstrated that, in the thirty years of its existence, radical evangelicalism has become a
significant factor within the worldwide evangelical movement. The third section presents the fundamental
characteristics of radical theology within a selection of themes. It demonstrates that the radicals
have confronted the evangelical movement with a transforming theory of mission, which shows itself
to be relevant for today's pressing problems. The fourth section describes the social action of radical
evangelicalism and demonstrates that the energetic theology of the radicals is in fact based on a compelling
spirituality. The fifth section records the results of the investigation and presents conclusions
for praxis and further theological study.
Arbeiten. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. (Missiology)

Ervaring van mag in konfessionele bybelse beradingTroskie, Mariza 30 November 2003 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / I wanted to investigate the way people experienced confessional pastoral therapy by conducting a qualitative research study. The role of the pastor were examined as well as the effect of discourses of power and ethics in pastoral counseling.
I interviewed clients who were counseled by pastors of the AFM Church (Apostolic Faith Mission). The research supposes that knowledge and power discourses have a major influence in pastoral counseling which is often not accounted for. I wanted to see how clients experienced the effects of these discourses of power and ethics. I furthermore wanted to see how these power discourses could result in clients feeling subordinate to the pastor and his knowledge and the effect that these feelings might have on them.
The purpose of this study was not to generalize the experiences of the participants, but rather to set a contextual background of the experiences of power in confessional pastoral counseling. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Pastorale Terapie)
