Gender jako sociální konstrukce a jeho vliv na jazyk mužů a žen / Gender as a social construction and its impact on the language of men and women

Kožová, Martina January 2013 (has links)
The thesis follows the relation between gender and language use of individuals for whom German is a foreign language. It is based on the hypothesis, that the language of men and women shows some typical characteristics. On the background of the development of feminist or gender linguistics the thesis gives an overview of the different concepts, which are trying to explain the relationship between gender and language. Presented are also specific language characteristic of men and women. Further an important theoretical basis is the theory of social construction of reality. Following the theory the thesis examines how are the individuals being styled into their respective gender roles and what influence this stylization on their language use has. The practical part of the thesis is based on a research conducted by an online-questionnaire. (Self) representations of domestic workers : race and gender politics in Brazil

Perrine, Alida 20 November 2013 (has links)
On April 16, 2012, the much awaited primetime telenovela appropriately titled Cheias de Charme premiered on Rede Globo, the largest Brazilian television network, and viewers across the nation were introduced to as três Marias, the three charming protagonists who, in a rare occurrence on the network, are domestic workers. It is no surprise that domestic workers should be of interest to Brazilian television viewers; paid domestic work is an enormous part of daily life in Brazil and domestic workers make up nearly eight percent of the work force. This project builds on previous explorations of the unique relationships between domestic employers and employees in Brazil, as well as examinations of the traditional ways in which domestic workers have been imagined to draw a clearer image of the changing role of paid domestic work in Brazilian society. Part ethnographic study and part media analysis, this study is mainly preoccupied with exploring various representations of domestic workers. These representations speak to the tensions and contradictions surrounding the social dynamics of the intimate relationships between domestic workers and their employers, as well as the role of domestic work in Brazilian society, haunted by the legacy of nearly four-hundred years of slavery. / text

The educational and occupational aspirations of young Sikh adults : an ethnographic study of the discourses and narratives of parents, teachers and adults in one London school

Brar, Bikram Singh January 2011 (has links)
This research study explores how future educational and occupational aspirations are constructed by young Sikh adults. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten young Sikh adults, both their parents, and their teachers at one school in West London to investigate how future aspirations are constructed, which resources are employed, and why certain resources are used over others. In some previous research on aspirations and future choices, Sikhs have either been ignored or, instead, subsumed under the umbrella category of 'Asian' and this study seeks to address this. Furthermore, the study seeks to shed light on how British-Sikh identities are constructed and intersected by social class, caste and gender. This is important to explore since it can have an impact upon how young adults are structured by educational policy. A 'syncretic' social constructionist framework which predominantly draws upon Pierre Bourdieu's notions of habitus, capital and field, along with the cultural identity theories of Avtar Brah and Stuart Hall, is employed to investigate the construction of identities and aspirations. In addition, the study contains ethnographical elements as it is conducted on my 'own' Sikh group and at my former secondary school. Consequently, I brought a set of assumptions to the research which, rather than disregard, I acknowledge since they highlight how I come to form certain interpretations of phenomena over others.

Decoding Charlotte's Prevalence. A Kristevian Approach to the Representation of Femininity in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Die Wahlverwandtschaften

Rothne Zadori, Zsuzsanna 01 May 2010 (has links)
This dissertation examines Goethe’s portrayal of femininity in Die Wahlver-wandtschaften and how his depiction of all three central female characters relates to feminine ideals that were promoted through the theoretical gender debate of the late 1700s in Germany and Western Europe. I analyze Charlotte’s, Luciane’s, and Ottilie’s actions and interactions in various triadic character constellations in order to offer new insights into Goethe’s portrayal of femininity. In so doing, I argue that Goethe’s depiction of Charlotte holds the key to understanding how far Die Wahlverwandtschaften functions as (critical) commentary on the late Enlightenment gender discourse. I maintain that the actions and interactions of these three women show them as at times ‘unfit’ and/or unwilling to meet feminine ideals promoted in the late Enlightenment. I apply central concepts of Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytic theory from the 1970s and 1980s as analytical tools to examine how far Goethe’s Wahlverwandt-schaften can be viewed as a critique of the norms and expectations commonly expressed in the late Enlightenment. I primarily focus on Kristeva’s concepts of subjectivity formation, semiotic and symbolic modalities, abjection, and her theorizing of motherhood. Kristeva’s emphasis on the pivotal role of the maternal function in the child’s identity formation and her representation of femininity as alterity allow me to explore the significance of Charlotte’s prevalence among the characters and to approach Goethe’s ambiguous and complex portrayal of unsteady, constantly shifting, and interrelated models of femininity in Charlotte, Luciane, and Ottilie as a narrative experiment in which he tests the viability of such models within the surrounding social discourse. In the main body of this dissertation, I begin by concentrating on Charlotte’s partnerships with men, and then I focus on her maternal role in relation to Luciane, Ottilie, and Otto. By making Charlotte the ‘epicenter’ of this investigation, I explore how far Goethe shapes her, Luciane, and Ottilie as characters who transgress late Enlightenment gender boundaries and thus deviate from what were considered ‘feminine ideals’ in order to underscore the arbitrary and contradictory nature of the prevalent social order.

Appraisal, identity and gendered discourse in toilet graffit : a study in transgressive semiotics

Fiona Severiona Ferris January 2010 (has links)

This research is interested in the linguistic choices people use to express and negotiate subjective, inter-subjectiveand ideological positions through the graffiti within the confines of selected men's and women's toilets on the UWC main campus. The focus is on attitudes, one aspect of appraisal theory. The aim of investigating the attitudes inherent in the toilet graffiti is to obtain an insight into the evaluative discourse of men and women with regard to their emotional, judgmental and evaluative stance in their writings. This form of analysis is on the level of meaning. Differences with regard to the attitudinal content in terms of occurrence (quantitative) and content (qualitative) are investigated. The data shows that &lsquo / male&rsquo / (gender) are implicit when expressing emotions, whereas female is explicit in its expression of emotions. In addition, in terms of the evaluation of emotions, the data indicates that &lsquo / females&rsquo / are insecure in terms of their emotional disposition, whereas males mostly express emotions of unhappiness in the toilet graffiti analysed. Both males and females have a tendency to judge each other with regard to their capacities. In terms of judgement of behaviours and things, males can be said to have interesting and even creative ways of evaluation, which include punctuation, taboo varieties and pictures.

Projeto de Assentamento in Jataí, State of Goiás. And has as the objective, to analyze the social and spatial trajectory of the families from this setting, besides to verify the influence of these trajectories in the present time of their lives, as seat people. So some specific objectives were established, just as to analyze the social and spatial trajectory of the families from the Rio Claro P.A. in the previous phases to the constitution of this setting: the previous phase to the land battle; to understand how the constitution of the P.A. was realized, and to verify which were the influences of the social and spatial trajectories of the families in the social and productive organization of the setting. These trajectories were divided in three phases, the previous phase to the entering into the land battle, which gives the basis for the first part of the work; the phase of the battle for land, which gives basis the second part; and finally the present phase of their social and spatial trajectories, as seat people, constituting the third part. According to these objectives, we took bold of the following methodological instruments which permitted the development of this study: bibliographic and documental research through the data supplied by the Sindicato dos Trabalhadores Rurais de Jataí (Jataí Rural Labor Union) and the DATALUTA data bank, which permitted the secondary data collection; field research, with the use , as instruments of data collection, of a form with closed and open questions and a semi organized interview, which propitiated the collection of the primary data. In the form we obtained the participation of 17 families who compose the Rio Claro setting, in a total of 19 people. 10 families participated in the interview, totalizing 13 researched people. After realizing this study it was possible to conclude that, to research the social and spatial trajectories from the components of the P.A. Rio Claro was fundamental to understand the social and productive relationships established in the setting and among people of the researched group, being possible to indentify the origins of the families, the cause they were expropriated from the land, and how they entered into the movement of the land battle and how they created the setting which nowadays guarantees them the production of their ways of life, through the work in the conquered peace of land .

Mediální reprezentace současných politických leaderek a gender diskurze v online prostředí / Media representation of current female political readers and gender discourse in online enviroment

Blažiová, Lucia January 2019 (has links)
The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the media representation of political leaders in the articles published on the Facebook pages and of the form of discussion under the articles creates fairly comprehensive picture of the discourse on the issue of women at the top political positions in the online environment. Although gender does not appear to be one of the most important factors influencing the tone of the analyzed texts, it is possible to identify several tendencies that are related to gender in both articles and comments. Except for positive tone when evaluating political actions and opinions of female politician, which highlighted the stereotypical characteristics of women (patience, compromise, etc.), articles and comments are negative. Other identified forms of media representation of female politicians were usage of images of power and weaknesses (female too strong is associated with negative tone); associating women with emotions (both extremes - absence of emotions and over-emotionality  are associated with negative tone); and using privacy-related topics such as family, fashion, hobbies (a woman who is not interested in these areas, and thus does not fall into the stereotypical image of a woman, is again depicted negatively). Analysis of the comments in the online discussion...
