Present research has aimed at the study of convective boiling of recently introduced halocarbon refrigerants inside horizontal copper tubes. A comprehensive literature survey has revealed that the correlations for the convective boiling heat transfer coefficient can be divided into three main categories: (1) strictly convective; (2) superposition of effects; (3) strictly empirical. As a general rule these correlations are not fitted for generalizations. An experimental set up has been developed and constructed in order to raise data involving a relatively wide range of operational conditions. These data have been used to investigate effects of such parameters as heat flux, mass velocity, quality and evaporating temperature. In addition gathered data have been used in the development of a correlation for the heat transfer coefficient under convective boiling conditions typical of refrigeration applications. The model has been developed in terms of the main intervening non dimensional groups. The proposed equation correlated very well not only experimental data from present investigation but data obtained else where.

Contribution à l'étude phénoménologique de l'ébullition convective en mini-canal / Contribution to phenomenological study of flow boiling in mini-channelLayssac, Thibault 09 February 2018 (has links)
Liquid-gas and liquid-vapour two-phase flows are encountered in a large range of industrial applications. They are observed in multiple configurations, in terms of dimension and orientation and then have various characteristics. In the literature, it can be distinguished two limit cases of the two-phase flow linked to its confinement: micro and macro-scale. Nonetheless, characterisation of the micro-to-macro scale transition is still a main issue for the comprehension of two-phase flow. In addition, thermal behaviours of flow boiling are affected by the nucleation phenomenon, which is strongly influenced by the geometry of the application and the saturation conditions. The main objective of the thesis is to contribute to the comprehension of adiabatic and diabatic two-phase flows in mini-scale, where the general behaviours are not well definite. In the present study, the effects of confinement and orientation of two-phase flows on flow patterns, pressure drops and heat exchanges are studied and compared with observations and models of the literature. An 1.6 mm inner diameter inclinable test section was installed on the test bench of Charnay (2014), which enabled to study R-245fa flow boiling. This test section enables to visualize the flow directly in the evaporator and the simultaneous acquisition of the pressure drops and the outside wall temperature field. A sapphire tube, heated by a transparent ITO coating, is unemployed to insure the transparency. The temperature field is obtained by an IR image processing. Previously, tests were led on the section of Charnay (2014) in adiabatic conditions. The present test section was used for two series of tests, led in both adiabatic and diabatic conditions. It appeared a strong effect of confinement and orientation on the flow patterns and pressure drops. The effect of the orientation is likely the same that one observed in macro-scale. In addition, the orientation slightly affects heat exchanges in comparison with the uncertainties of the IR dispositive. Finally, it is observed an effect of orientation on dryout flow pattern. In this configuration, the temperature field evolution with time is synchronized with the dynamic evolution of the two-phase flow.

The use of heat exchangers with reduced diameter channels has been growing due to the demand for compact heat exchangers which allow high rates of heat transfer, low pressure drop and reduction of refrigerant fluid charge and material cost. The present work analyzes the convective boiling through small diameter channels and the influence of some parameters on the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop. The results of three experimental studies are presented to evaluate the influence of the working fluid, the channel diameter and the saturation temperature. In the first analysis, the boiling of isobutane, R600a, and propane, R290, in a channel with a 1 mm internal diameter, with mass velocity from 240 to 480 kg m-2 s-1, heat flux from 5 to 60 kW m-2 and saturation temperature of 25°C. In the second analysis, it’s studied the boiling of R600a in channels with diameters of 1.0 and 2.6 mm, saturation temperature of 22°C, with mass velocity from 188 to 377 kg m-2 s-1 and heat flux from 28 to 56 kW m-2. Finally, the boiling of R600a in a 1.0 mm diameter channel was studied with two saturation temperatures, 20 and 30°C, with a mass velocity from 240 to 480 kg m-2 s-1 and heat flux from 20 to 60 kW m-2. The influence of mass flow, heat flux and vapor quality on the behavior of the heat transfer coefficient and the frictional pressure drop are evaluated. The analysis of the working fluid showed that, in general, R600a presents the highest coefficients of heat transfer and frictional pressure drop. From the analysis of the influence of the channel diameter, it was observed that, for all experimental conditions, the heat transfer coefficient was higher in the 1.0 mm channel. The results also showed that the higher heat transfer coefficients were obtained with the saturation temperature of 30°C. Complementing the analyzes, the flow patterns were evaluated through the recorded images, and the flow pattern maps, comparing the two fluids. The map that best fit the curves were those of Revellin and Thome (2007b) and Ong and Thome (2011). Some proposed heat transfer correlations for mini and micro channels were evaluated with the experimental data, from which it was observed that, in general, the correlation of Kim and Mudawar (2013b) presented a better adjustment, among the evaluated correlations.

The present research has been focused on the study of flow patterns inside channels of diameter less than 3 mm during the convective evaporation of refrigerants such as R134a and R245fa. For the investigation of such topics, experimental techniques and methods of analysis of results were developed. A broad database was gathered in an experimental test facility. The characterization of flow patterns involved the simultaneous processing of signals from the following devices: a pair diode / laser-sensor having a transparent tube between them, within which occurs the two-phase flow; a micro piezoelectric pressure transducer to determine the local variation of pressure of the flow and a micro-thermocouple fixed within the fluid. The technique used in data processing involves the gradual agglomeration of data having similar average characteristics; this method was developed based on the k-means clustering algorithm. The signals from the transducers were acquired simultaneously at a frequency of 25 kHz. The program for the acquisition and for processing of the signals was developed using LabView. Simultaneous images of two-phase flow at a speed of capture around 10,000 images / s were obtained through a high speed camera and the observed flow patterns were contrasted to the results provided by the objective method. Based on this analysis, flow maps were proposed, which incorporate not only subjective criteria such as visualization, but also objective criteria like the transient variations of local pressure of the flow, temperature of the fluid and the effect of the flow morphology based on the dispersion of light which effect was captured by the photo-diode. The maps obtained by the objective method were compared against flow pattern segregated based on visualization and a reasonable agreement was obtained. Besides the elongated bubble characteristics were determined.

Performance of EHD assisted convective boiling heat exchangers utilizing dielectric fluidsNangle-Smith, Sarah 02 August 2018 (has links)
Electrohydrodynamics in convective boiling heat exchangers has been studied since the early 1990’s and has been shown to result in a large variation in the average performance enhancement of these systems. The behaviour of EHD assisted convective boiling heat exchangers, is still largely unpredictable owing to a number of conflicting parameters which are rarely kept constant in empirical studies, i.e. flow pattern and heat flux. In this thesis, it is hypothesised that by reducing the number of confounding variables in the experimental test conditions, and understanding the behaviour of EHD in convective boiling systems from a flow pattern dependent point of view, this can allow for the development of flow pattern dependent experimental correlations & numerical models to develop a methodology for performance prediction, control strategies and system integration for an EHD assisted convective boiling heat exchange device.
A 30 cm long, smooth, concentric, annular test section is used to analyse the effect of EHD on convective boiling performance under constant flow pattern, constant, low heat flux, and negligible free charge conditions. Saturated boiling conditions for flow-rates between 60 kg/m2s and 180 kg/m2s and thermodynamic quality range of 0.25 - 0.55 were tested. Heat transfer enhancement ranged from 0.95 to 2.3 fold and pressure drop penalty varied from 1.4-3 fold over these test conditions. The local EHD behaviour was found to be more consistent along the axial length of the test section compared to empirical data in the literature, which uses much longer test section lengths, where flow pattern can vary. An experimental database of EHD convective boiling data for horizontal annular electrode geometries was compiled to be used for analysis purposes. The performance of the heat exchanger in both free-field and high voltage conditions could be explained by looking at the flow patterns in each case.
Electrostatic modelling was used to determine electric field strength distributions and interfacial stress due to the dielectrophoretic and electrostriction forces on the liquid vapour interface, which induce liquid extraction based flow pattern re-distribution in two phase dielectric flows. A fully coupled 2D, adiabatic numerical model for the effect of the electric body force on two phase flow pattern distribution was developed. Charge was neglected in this model. Two different models for the interface migration were used and compared; a moving mesh (MM) interface tracking model and a volume of fluid (VOF) interface tracking mode. Both were verified against published experimental data. For the liquid extraction verification case, the VOF model suffers interface stretching up to 300% resulting in a 42% slower extraction time and underestimated forces. However, it is useful to use the VOF model when simulating complex flow patterns which are subject to topological changes like bubble detachment or droplet coalescence as these cannot be simulated with the moving mesh model. The moving mesh model can be used to determine the error in forces and phase velocities when using the VOF model.
A methodology for generating two-phase EHD flow pattern maps was developed by incorporating the electric Froude number into each of the flow pattern transition equations. A semi-analytical model was developed to determine the maximum interfacial stress due to EHD for stratified flows to reduce the requirement of numerical modeling, and thus the flow pattern map generation methodology is fully equation based. Although transition equations developed by multiple researchers were used and compared, it is recommended that the Steiner transitions equations be used for EHD two-phase flow pattern mapping, until more fundamental experimental data can be gathered to modify the semi-empirical transition equations used in more state-of-the-art maps. EHD was found to significantly affect the “stratified-stratified wavy (SSW)” and “stratified wavy – intermittent/annular (SWIA)” transitions for concentric horizontal geometries, with minimal effect on the transition to dryout and no effect on the “intermittent dispersed bubbly (IB)” transition. The EHD flow pattern maps were generated and compared against data from the present study and a database of experimental EHD convective boiling studies. The regions where maximum enhancement were seen in the literature correlate well with those regions predicted by the maps.
Performance correlations for the EHD convective boiling heat transfer and pressure drop were developed. They are based on the free-field Kandlikar correlation [1] for two-phase heat transfer and the Chisholm-Laird [2] correlations for two-phase pressure drop, respectively. The EHD flow pattern map is used to determine what the flow pattern for a given applied voltage will be, and flow pattern based enhancement linear multipliers are then used to determine the EHD performance above the free-field case.
EHD is a form of active enhancement, i.e. it requires power. Thus, it would be used in systems that require performance control or regulation, in addition to some niche applications like space where it can be used instead of gravity. A method for EHD controller design was established and an EHD control algorithm was designed and implemented on the test section for the flow pattern and applied waveforms that were determined to be optimal to maximize enhancement in this geometry. System identification was performed empirically to determine the transfer function between EHD voltage and heat load to be controlled for. This resulted in a 1st order plus dead-time model to which proportional-integral controller constants were tuned. Two controllers were developed; a PID control system and a Smith model predictive control system and these were compared based on their ability to regulate the output quality of the heat exchanger when subject to dynamic heat loading. Regulation was achieved for a dynamic heat load within ±25% bound from the designed steady state load. These controllers operate on one flow pattern as the test section is 30 cm long. Flow pattern dependent controller design would be required for a full length convective boiling heat exchanger. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / Control of boiling heat transfer using electric fields is hard to predict. This thesis presents a set a design guidelines based on how the electric field enhances the flow pattern.

Estudo teórico e experimental sobre padrões de escoamento e perda de pressão durante escoamentos monofásicos e bifásicos no interior de tubos com fitas retorcidas / Theoretical and experimental study on flow pattern identification and pressure drop during single and two-phase flow in tubes with twisted tape insertsKanizawa, Fabio Toshio 14 July 2011 (has links)
A theoretical and experimental study on single and two-phase flow inside tubes with twisted tapes inserts is presented. Twisted tape inserts have been used for decades as a technique of heat transfer enhancement. However, their heat transfer enhancement is accompanied by an increase of the pressure drop. Therefore, understanding the pressure drop and heat transfer mechanisms is fundamental for heat exchanger designers in order to optimize these devices when using twisted-tape inserts. Based on these aspects the present study concerns single and two-phase flows inside tubes with twisted tapes. Experiments were performed in an experimental apparatus for a 15.9 mm ID and twisted tape with twist ratios of 3, 4, 9, 14 and , the last one corresponding to a plain tube without tape. For two-phase flow, experiments were conducted for R134a, mass velocities from 75 to 250 kg/m²s and vapor qualities from 5 to 95%. In case of single-phase flow, experiments were performed for mass velocities from 100 to 450 kg/m²s. The experimental campaign was focused on pressure drop and flow pattern subjective identification. Additionally an extensive literature review on flow patterns, superficial void fraction, and methodologies for prediction of the pressure drop in plain tubes with and without twisted-tape inserts during single and two-phase flow is presented. As final result, a correlation for prediction of pressure drop during flow inside tubes with twisted tape inserts is proposed.

Estudo teórico-experimental da ebulição convectiva do refrigerante R-134a em tubos lisos / A theoretical and experimental study of convective boiling of refrigerant R-134a in smooth tubesBarbieri, Paulo Eduardo Lopes 02 September 2005 (has links)
The research reports a theoretical and experimental study of convective boiling of refrigerant R-134a in smooth tubes. Tests have been carried out to measure the following physical parameters at the test section: mass flow rate, pressure and pressure drop, refrigerant and surface temperatures and the electrical power. In addition to these parameters, a photographic study has been carried out from pictures taken at the test section exit in order to determine the flow regimes that intervene under the imposed operating conditions. Effects over the pressure drop and heat transfer of the mass flow rate, heat flux, quality, and tube diameter have been investigated. Three flow regimes have been found: the intermitent, the stratified and the annular. Flow regime transitions are apparently governed by the mass velocity and tube diameter. The annular and the stratified flow regimes have been semi-empirically modeled using a mechanistic approach. The annular flow model has been applied to develop correlations for two important physical parameters: the interfacial friction factor and the film thickness. Through the stratified model, the shape of the interface has been evaluated along with correlations for the liquid to wall and interface friction factors
