Methodenentwicklung zur Analyse von Störfallszenarien mit Frischdampfleck und Borverdünnung mit Hilfe des Codesystems ATHLET-DYN3D - Abschlussbericht Teil 2

Rohde, U., Grundmann, U., Kliem, S. January 2005 (has links)
A model for the realistic description of the coolant mixing inside the pressure vessel of pressurized water reactors was implemented into the coupled code complex DYN3D/ATHLET. This model is based on the linear superposition Dirac-pulse-like perturbations. The model can be applied to the mixing of coolant of different temperature and/or boron concentration. The coupled code complex DYN3D/ATHLET with the newly implemented model was applied to the analysis of boron dilution and steam line break accidents. The results of a parameter study for the case "Start-up of the first main coolant pump with a slug of lower borated water in the cold leg" have shown, that even under the conditions of the maximum slug volume there is no fuel damage. The applicability to the second class of accidents, where the coolant mixing has to be considered, was demonstrated by the analysis of a generic main steam line break scenario. Further it was shown, that the influence of turbulent fluctuations of the velocity inside the reactor pressure vessel during nominal and accident conditions on neutron-kinetic parameters cannot be neglected.

Kvantitativ analys av organiska syror i kylvätska / Quantitative analysis of organic acids in engine coolant

Henriksson, Emma, Holm, Martin January 2017 (has links)
Volvo Cars is a well-known company and they are selling their cars all over the world. Today, Volvo Cars send their engine coolant to the supplier of engine coolant for analysis. This process is complicated and takes a lot of time. It is in the interest of Volvo Cars to be able to analyze the engine coolant themselves. In order to do that, a method where they can analyze the engine coolant must be developed. This exam work aim to develop a method where it is possible to analyze the concentration of organic acids in Volvo´s engine coolant with a High Performance Liquid Chromatography - HPLC. The organic acids are inhibitors that protect the materials in the engine from corrosion when in contact with the engine coolant. The method is developed in several steps. First it is important to know how different organic acids could be analyzed with an HPLC. HPLC-analysis is very dependent of the instrumental parameters. The parameters you change when developing a method are pH, kind of column, wavelength of the detector, kind of detector, flow rate in the column, injections volume, composition of the eluent (solvent) and, analysis time. Calibration curves are created and could be used as a reference in further analysis. Three of the five organic acids that were supposed to be analyzed were possible to analyze. Three organic acids were analyzed with one method and the two remaining organic acids with another method. The only difference between the methods is the wavelengths of the detector.

Microstructure changes during fast beta cycles of zirconium alloys

Nguyen, Chi-Toan January 2018 (has links)
During loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA) and reactivity-initiated accidents (RIA), nuclear fuel rods experience high heating rates that change the microstructure and properties of zirconium cladding materials, which are in forms of stress-relieved, like cold-worked (CW) or recrystallised (RX) microstructure. The present study aimed to determine how different fast heating rates and starting microstructures affect the kinetics of phase transformation, the transformation textures and eventually the mechanical response in the dual-phase region. The LOCA/RIA cycles from heating at 8 to 100C/s to alpha+beta or above beta transus temperature were achieved via resistive heating in an electro-thermal-mechanical tester. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and electrical resistivity measurements showed that the approach curves of CW Zircaloy-4 shift to higher temperature at faster constant heating rates and change to a new approach curve when changing rates. 2-second holding at two-phase temperature produces identical phase fractions as equilibrium. These observations are consistent with the diffusional character of the phase trans- formation. Heated at 100oCs1, RX samples transform with 2D beta-growth while CW ones show simultaneous beta-nucleation and growth. The difference arises because the fast heating rate helps preserve low-angle grain boundaries (GB) in the CW microstructure up to phase transformation temperature, increasing beta nucleation sites and prevent beta-growth. This gives rise to different textures of RX and CW materials before transformation, producing different textures, which are weak in both cases. However, this difference is enhanced during grain growth and transformation on cooling. Thus, the RX material shows strong final alpha texture with 0002 maxima aligned in TD and tilted 20deg from ND towards TD while the CW reveals an essentially random one. In both RX and CW materials, variant selection does not occur during transformation on heating. During beta-grain growth, although there is variability in beta-textures measured by SXRD and EBSD beta reconstruction, it is clear that variant selection occurs, leading to strengthening of the beta texture. During transformation on cooling, variant selection occurs early in nucleation of the alpha phase from the shared 110 beta GB in the RX condition. The flow stresses of CW Zircaloy-4 in the two-phase regime at a given temperature depend on the heating rates, despite having the same phase fractions. Heated at a slower rate, the material shows an upper yield stress followed by softening behaviour while that heated faster has a smaller yield stress followed by a high work-hardening rate and then stable flowing stresses. The evolution of diffraction elastic strains and intensity suggest the upper yield stress and softening are due to stress-induced transformation of the harder alpha grains into large and isolated softer beta grains. In contrast, the sample heated faster develops an almost continuous film of beta grains along the GB of unrecrystallised alpha-grains which results in early beta-yielding and coherent deformation of the two phases, leading to constant flow stresses. The findings will improve the accuracy of inputs from phase fractions, microstructure and texture of zirconium claddings when modelling LOCA/RIA. A crystal plasticity model should consider the effects of heating rates and cold-work, which are often ignored. The link between deformation, fast heating rates and microstructure evolution might be relevant to other processes like additive layer manufacturing and even forging in the two-phase region.

Design and evaluation of heat transfer fluids for direct immersion cooling of electronic systems

Harikumar Warrier, Pramod Kumar Warrier 02 July 2012 (has links)
Comprehensive molecular design was used to identify new heat transfer fluids for direct immersion phase change cooling of electronic systems. Four group contribution methods for thermophysical properties relevant to heat transfer were critically evaluated and new group contributions were regressed for organosilicon compounds. 52 new heat transfer fluids were identified via computer-aided molecular design and figure of merit analysis. Among these 52 fluids, 9 fluids were selected for experimental evaluation and their thermophysical properties were experimentally measured to validate the group contribution estimates. Two of the 9 fluids (C6H11F3 and C5H6F6O) were synthesized in this work. Pool boiling experiments showed that the new fluids identified in this work have superior heat transfer properties than existing coolant HFE 7200. The radiative forcing and global warming potential of new fluids, calculated via a new group contribution method developed in this work and FT-IR analysis, were found to be significantly lower than those of current coolants. The approach of increasing the thermal conductivity of heat transfer fluids by dispersing nanoparticles was also investigated. A model for the thermal conductivity of nanoparticle dispersions (nanofluids) was developed that incorporates the effect of size on the intrinsic thermal conductivity of nanoparticles. The model was successfully applied to a variety of nanoparticle-fluid systems. Rheological properties of nanofluids were also investigated and it was concluded that the addition of nanoparticles to heat transfer fluids may not be beneficial for electronics cooling due to significantly larger increase in viscosity relative to increase in thermal conductivity.

Versuchsanlage ROCOM zur Untersuchung der Kühlmittelvermischung in Druckwasserreaktoren - Ergebnisse quasistationärer Vermischungsexperimente

Grunwald, G., Kliem, S., Höhne, T., Rohde, U., Prasser, H.-M., Richter, K.-H., Weiß, F.-P. 31 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The test facility ROCOM (Rossendorf Coolant Mixing Model) has been built for the investigation of coolant mixing processes in the reactor pressure vessel of pressurised water reactors (PWR). ROCOM is a 1:5 model of the German PWR KONVOI and has been designed for a wide range of different mixing scenarios. ROCOM disposes of four loops with fully controllable coolant pumps. The test facility is operated with demineralised water. For the investigation of mixing, tracer solution (water labelled with salt) is injected into the facility. The transient distribution of the electrical conductivity is is measured at different positions of the flow path by means of wire-mesh sensor technique with high resolution in space and time. The measured conductivity is transformed into a dimensionless mixing scalar. The mixing at quasi-stationary conditions (constant loop mass flow rates) has been investigated in the presented experiments. That concerned nominal operation conditions, the operation with a reduced number of loops and the investigation of cold-water transients with running pumps and conditions of developed natural circulation. In special experimental series, the reproducibility of the results at identicla boundary conditions within the confidence intervalls has been shown. Further, the influence of various factors on the mixing has been investigated. This included the pressure losses at the core bottom plate, the global coolant flow level and the influence of the loop flow rate on the perturbed sector at the core inlet. An analysis of the measurement error of the used measurement technique completes the report.

Instabilité et dispersion de jets de corium liquides : analyse des processus physiques et modélisation dans le logiciel MC3D / Corium liquid jets instability and dispersion : analysis of physical process and modelisation on the MC3D code

Castrillon Escobar, Sebastian 13 September 2016 (has links)
In the case of a severe accident in a nuclear power plant, the molten core may flow into water and interact with it. The consequences of this fuel-coolant interaction (FCI) for the follow-up of the accident may be numerous so the phenomenon needs to be described accurately, one of them called “steam explosion” can lead to the failure of the nuclear reactor containment. FCI is a complex multiphase interaction involving several physical phenomena. The premixing phase of the interaction consists in the fragmentation and dispersion of corium in the coolant pool. This phase is driven by the fragmentation process which modifies heat transfers (coolant boiling dynamics) and chemical reactions (corium oxidation and hydrogen generation). This thesis brings new elements about the corium jet and droplet breakup with the main goal of improve fragmentation models on the MC3D multiphase code, developed by the IRSN. Our study is based on a multi-scale fragmentation process where the jet fragmentation rate and final droplet dimensions are not coupled themselves. We suppose a fragmentation process resulting from a primary instability (mass transfer within jet and big droplets) depending on the large flow scales and a secondary instability depending on the small flow scales (leading to final droplet breakup). This model has been implemented in MC3D in combination with the MUSIG method recently added to MC3D. In this method, droplets are represented using several classes, each of them with their own droplet diameter, mass and energy fields. Despite new improvements on modeling corium fragmentation, there is still a lack on the comprehension and characterization on the liquid droplet fragmentation, particularly on liquid/liquid configurations. In this thesis, we study in detail droplet breakup using the computational fluid dynamics software GERRIS. As a result, we find a new droplet breakup classification in liquid/liquid configurations, we improve the droplet breakup dynamics comprehension and we analyze the droplet-vortex interaction to determine breakup regime transition.
