Community corrections in China: problems, political goals, and the way forward

Kong, Qi 30 August 2018 (has links)
In this thesis, I examine the implementation of community corrections in China with a focus on the factors preventing it from functioning effectively, as well as the possible way forward for the system. I introduce the history and legal framework of community corrections in China and the problems with its implementation. Rather than simply identifying the problems at a superficial level, I have analysed the relevant political context and its influence on the application of community corrections in China in order to identify the sources of problems and suggest potential methods to remedy these problems so as to improve implementation. / Graduate

Hypermasculinity and Incarceration: Exploring Barriers to Rehabilitation

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Corrections has a rich history centered around rehabilitation and its obtainability, and has seen the pendulum swing back and forth between rehabilitative and punitive policies. Currently, there is an emphasis on evidence-based practices which provides a unique opportunity to assess gaps in the rehabilitation literature as a means to ensure that rehabilitative-oriented policies are part of the forefront of corrections. One notable gap in the corrections and rehabilitation literature is that research has not assessed what influences meaningful participation in rehabilitative programming during incarceration. Past research has acknowledged that there is an inmate code, characterized heavily by hypermasculinity, that negatively influences behavior during incarceration, yet research has not examined whether this code influences engagement in rehabilitative programming. The current study seeks to address this gap by examining the inmate code, specifically hypermasculinity, as a barrier to rehabilitation during incarceration through in-depth interviews with five incarcerated individuals from a large Southwestern correctional facility. Findings, limitations, and future research suggestions are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Criminology and Criminal Justice 2017

Conditions of Confinement, Personality Traits, and Inmate Perceptions of Procedural Justice

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Procedural justice serves a critical role in the interactions between criminal justice system actors and their clientele. Much of the literature in this area focuses on policing, and we know comparatively less about how procedural justice operates in corrections. Much like policing, it is likely that perceptions of correctional procedural justice vary within larger contexts. Using structured interviews with inmates (N=248) in Arizona at max, close, and medium custody, this study examines the association between conditions of confinement and perceptions of procedural justice, with a focus on how personality characteristics may modify this relationship. Results indicate that custody level does impact inmate perceptions of correctional officer procedural justice and that certain personality traits serve as protective or aggravating factors within the relationship between custody level and procedural justice. Policy implications and future research are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Criminology and Criminal Justice 2018

Social work roles in correctional services

Mashabela, Manaso Pelmos 17 October 2008 (has links)
M.A. / In 1994 South Africa changed to a new political dispensation to guarantee a better life for all, including offenders. The new Constitution of the Republic of South Africa was adopted in 1996 and it makes provision for conditions of detention that are consistent with humane dignity. Social work as a profession also had to position itself in such a way that it defines its role within the confines of the democratic South Africa, and meet the new challenges of the new era. Possibly the most important characteristic of social work is that it is generic in nature and remains basically the same in whichever situation it is undertaken. Therefore there are no differences when social work is practiced in relation to the family, the child, the aged, the offender, the juvenile delinquent, the patient in the hospital, the mentally handicapped or in any other situation. Nevertheless, it is of the utmost importance that social work recognizes the particular requirements to which the social worker would be expected to respond and to adjust social work practice accordingly. The roles of social workers in correction are blurred and unclear. This study, therefore, is an attempt to define and clarify the role of social work in correctional services in relation to the offender with particular emphasis on rehabilitation. Rehabilitation of criminal offenders offers the criminal justice system a unique avenue of improvement. Despite the failures and abuses of the past, a revitalized concept of rehabilitation represents a creative opening in the repetitive mechanisms of a merely punitive system. There is an increasing demand for clear, explicit assessments, plans and reviews to minimize the risk of errors. Practitioners are required to write down what they are doing in more detail and to provide their principals with statistics to enable them to cost and evaluate the workings of the department. It is clear that if social workers in correctional services are to be accountable, a scientific approach is needed and effective training programmes must be in place to enhance the validity and reliability of the helping process. There has been an ongoing debate with regard to the efficacy of helping professions. There have been suggestions that the best helpers are those who stay abreast of the best in current theory and research and who constantly update their practical work through ongoing action research with their clients. Social workers have, until recently, retained a strong element of autonomy in their direct work with clients. Whereas the traditional punitive reaction enforces conformity to law on the basis of fear or pure calculation, rehabilitation creates in the offender the capacity for social participation and responsibility. / Dr. W. Correctional Career Pathways: A Jail Reentry Program Evaluation

Gass, Grace 01 December 2021 (has links)
There are numerous types of reentry programs available to inmates to help avoid the cycle of recidivism. There is little research on the impacts of reentry programs in jail populations. This current study sought to provide more research in this area by evaluating a local jail reentry program’s effect on recidivism. A quasi-experimental design was used to estimate the program’s effectiveness by comparing the recidivism statistics of inmates that have participated in the reentry program to a control group of inmates that did not. Inmates in the control group were matched according to their gender, age, race, and current offense type in efforts to mirror the type of inmates in the treatment group. Analyses indicated that inmates that completed the Correctional Career Pathways program had lower rates of recidivism when compared to the control group, but this difference was not great enough to be statistically significant.

Nelokální korelace v teorii funkcionálu hustoty / Nonlocal correlation in density functional theory

Hermann, Jan January 2013 (has links)
e van der Waals (vdW) interactions, or dispersion forces, are crucial in many chem- ical, physical and biological processes and received much attention from developers of density functional theory (DFT) methods. e most popular non-empirical DFT method for treating vdW interactions is the vdW density functional by Dion et al. (vdW-DF). Despite its success, vdW-DF is not accurate enough for many chemical applications. Here, we investigate two possible ways how to improve its accuracy. First, we reoptimize the only weakly speci ed parameter of vdW-DF for several semi-local functionals. On the S benchmark database set, we nd that revPBE is the best performer, decreasing the error from . % to . %. Second, a system-speci c but very accurate (∼ . kcal/mol) DFT correction scheme is proposed for precise calcula- tions of adsorbent−adsorbate interactions by combining vdW-DF and the empirical DFT/CC correction scheme. e new approach is applied to small molecules (CH , CO , H , H O, N ) interacting with a quartz surface and a lamella of UTL zeolite. e very high accuracy of the new scheme and its relatively easy use and numerical stability compared to the earlier DFT/CC scheme o er a straightforward solution for obtaining reliable predictions of adsorption energies.

Supervision Styles in Probation and Parole: An Analysis of Activities

Seiter, Richard P., West, Angela D. 01 January 2003 (has links)
Supervision of offenders in the community remains a critical component of the correctional processes in the United States. With almost six million offenders under correctional supervision in the community, there has been relatively little attention and few resources devoted to the style and quality of supervision received by these offenders. As a result of the lack of research regarding the style of probation and parole supervision, there is a need to identify and quantify styles of casework and surveillance supervision. This article describes a research project that identifies the key functions of parole and probation officers, reports self- and peer-rating on a casework to surveillance continuum, and establishes an instrument that can be used to create baseline information regarding how probation and parole officers spend their time, and whether the functions officers perform are casework, surveillance, or a balance of the two.
