The Opened Letter: Rereading HawthorneSmith, Grace Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
The recent publication of the bulk of Hawthorne's letters has precipitated this study, which deals with Hawthorne's creative and subversive narration and his synchronic appeal to a variety of readers possessing different tastes. The author initially investigates Hawthorne's religion and demonstrate how he disguised his personal religious convictions, ambiguously using the intellectual categories of Calvinism, Unitarianism, and spiritualism to promote his own humanistic "religion." Hawthorne's appropriation of the jeremiad further illustrates his emphasis on religion and narration. Although his religion remained humanistic, he readily used the old Puritan political sermon to describe and defend his own financial hardships. That jeremiad outlook has significant implications for his art.

Online Ads: The influence of color cues on sensory expectation : An expectation-based approach to explain the cross- modal influence of color cues in online adsLindholm, Maxime, Svensson, Sofia January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to new insights into how businesses can utilize color cues as a multisensory tool in online ads to evoke positive sensory expectations. An expectation-based approach was used to examine the cross-modal influence of warm relative to cold colored cues. The theory chapter starts with sensory marketing. Later on in the chapter, further theories are discussed, such as cross-modal correspondences and the perceptual process. The methodology used in this study was a deductive research approach, and the thesis has been carried out with a quantitative research study by collecting data through a between-subjects experiment. The outcome from this research study has created a greater understanding in color usage in digital media and how this might trigger other senses. It has shown that online ads with a warm colored background have a stronger cross-modal correspondence to taste, touch, sound and smell relative to cold colored ads. This is proven through strong significant differences in all of the hypotheses of this study. This study has created a better understanding of the impact of color cues on consumer expectations. The importance of using color as a tool when planning out marketing activities and advertising is covered in this study. The findings from this research are highly corresponding with theories of color psychology and cognitive psychology.

Factors Affecting the Preference of Buying Hybrid and Electric VehiclesZhao, Zhenyu January 2021 (has links)
Electric Vehicles is regarded as an important solution for emission reduction. But, the adoption to it is still a problem in many countries. With survey data containing demographic and attitude factors of respondents, this paper proposes two classification models: logistic regression and random forest using the Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) as an intermediate step to identify the factors affecting the willingness of electric vehicles purchase. The analysis shows that the addition of MCA does enhance the explanatory power while it takes a low cost on prediction performance, and the results reveal that characteristics such as frequency of using modern transport services, car-sharing subscription, living place, mode of frequent trip do have a significant impact on EV purchases.

The discrimination against transgender in the rental housing market in Sweden : An experimental study performed on the InternetFritzson, Sofia January 2021 (has links)
This paper investigated the discrimination against transgender people in the Swedish rental housing market, and is one of the first correspondence studies to examine this question at hand. A total of 800 applications were sent to various landlords advertising rental vacancies on Blocket.se. In total, the cisgender applicants attained a call back rate of 60.7 %, while the transgender applicants attained a rate of 59.0 %. Furthermore, no unequal treatment was found in positive employer responses for being transgender, when compared to the cisgender group. In the case, where the cisgender and transgender groups were evaluated separately, a favoring of having a woman as a tenant over a man was prominent when comparing the testers within the cisgender group. A penalty of 12.6 % in positive landlord responses was found for the trans man, in terms of likelihood of getting an invitation to additional contact or to showing, when compared to the cis woman. Similarly, the trans woman had a 7.4 % lesser likelihood in getting an invitation to showing than the cis woman. With regards to these results, one can conclude that there exists both discrimination based on gender and gender identity in the rental housing market in Sweden.

Deníky Bedřicha Smetany. Jejich pramenná hodnota a ediční problematika / Bedrich Smetana's Diaries.Mojžíšová, Olga January 2013 (has links)
Deníky Bedřicha Smetany představují rozsahem i výpovědní hodnotou unikátní pramenný soubor.

A behaviorist correspondence theory of truth / En behavioristisk korrespondensteori om sanningAlexander, Emil January 2020 (has links)
For many decades there has been an ongoing feud between the fields of behaviorism and cognitive science. This feud is not about specific scientific findings, it is about deep philosophical convictions, and about what terms and methods it makes sense to use when studying psychology. In the late 1950’s, behaviorism was declared dead when it was convincingly argued that behaviorism could not explain the nature of language, a centerpiece of human psychology. But since then behaviorism has slowly risen from its grave, as a new behaviorist theory of language emerged. The new behaviorist theory of language is called Relational Frame Theory (RFT), and it is part of a new behaviorist paradigm called Contextual Behavioral Science (CBS). This paradigm also includes a behaviorist psychotherapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which in the last decade has become popular across the world. Thus, the feud has once again become active, and the question about which philosophical principles are most suitable for the science of psychology is yet again something that needs an answer. But things have changed since the mid-1900’s when the discussion was last active. The philosophy of CBS is not exactly like that of earlier versions of behaviorism, having developed into a more explicit and coherent set of philosophical principles, summarized under the name functional contextualism. Old arguments against behaviorism do not apply to the same degree. So it is time for a new look at this debate, taking into consideration what functional contextualism and RFT has to offer. According to Contextual behavioral science, cognitive science generally entails a commitment to the correspondence theory of truth, the idea that something is true if it corresponds with reality, or a worldly fact. CBS, on the other hand, makes an explicit commitment to a pragmatic theory of truth, which focuses on the consequences (i.e. usefulness) of a statement or theory, instead of its correspondence with reality. Because of the supposed centrality of these theories of truth for the divide between cognitive science and behaviorism, I will focus on what exactly this divide is about, and whether there is any way that the differences can be reconciled. I will argue that the divide isn’t as big as it may seem when we take a closer look at the philosophical principles and empirical theories of CBS, and that it may in fact be possible to bridge this divide by formulating a version of the correspondence theory that is compatible with CBS. In part 1 I present a quick sketch of behaviorism as contrasted with cognitive science, and the connection between behaviorism and the pragmatic theory of truth, as well as the connection between cognitive science and the correspondence theory of truth. In part 2 I give a more detailed description of the philosophy and science of Contextual behavioral science, including the tools for understanding language in CBS terms. In part 3 I present a more detailed description of the correspondence theory of truth, giving an overview of the different versions of this theory that have been proposed throughout the history of philosophy. In part 4 I make a careful evaluation of the CBS objections towards the correspondence theory of truth, and arrive at a version of the correspondence theory that can be expressed in CBS terms. I will conclude that this version is compatible with the underlying philosophy of CBS, even though the CBS pragmatic theory of truth claims otherwise. I call it a behaviorist correspondence theory of truth.

Reading Instruction and Phonetic Control In Materials Development Based Upon Relative Frequency of Phoneme-Grapheme CorrespondencesGrow, Richard T. 01 May 1969 (has links)
This dissertation suggests a new approach to reading instruction and phonetic control in materials development. The central feature of this approach is its reliance on phoneme-grapheme correspondence data.
Specifically, the products of this dissertation were (1) the development of relative frequency tables depicting the various phonemes produced by a given grapheme structure, (2) the development of five different levels of phonetic sophistication, (3) the classification of 974 words as regular or irregular in accordance with each level of sophistication, and (4) the phonetic rewriting of three existing short stories to make them phonetically regular.
One of the phonetically rewritten stories was given to an existing group of sixth grade students along with its original form. The students performed with superior reading speed and equal comprehension on the phonetically rewritten story. This difference was significant at the .01 level.

Theta liftings on double covers of orthogonal groups:Lei, Yusheng January 2021 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Solomon Friedberg / We study the generalized theta lifting between the double covers of split special orthogonal groups, which uses the non-minimal theta representations constructed by Bump, Friedberg and Ginzburg. We focus on the theta liftings of non-generic representations and make a conjecture that gives an upper bound of the first non-zero occurrence of the liftings, depending only on the unipotent orbit. We prove both global and local results that support the conjecture. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. K německé korespondenci československé obchodní a živnostenské komory v letech 1930-1935. Příspěvek k historickému výzkumu odborných jazyků. / On the German Written Correspondence of the Czechoslovak Chambers of Commerce and Trade from 1930-1935. On the Research on History of Professional Languages.Přibík, Radek January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with a linguistic analysis of 32 German letters sent as a part of correspondence of the chambers of commerce and trade in the Czechoslovak Republic from 1930-1935. In addition to the textual analysis of the texts themselves, the thesis summarises the political and economic background with overlapping implications for national relations in the Bohemia region in the period after the dissolution of the Habsurg Monarchy. It also examines the contribution and essence of the chambers of commerce and trade. The core of this work consists in a textual analysis of the collected archival material from the National Archives in Prague. The aim of this thesis is to compare the linguistics and text linguistics phenomenon of individual senders and to analyse the German language in the context of the chamber of commerce and trade's dealings.
