Population growth in a high amenity area : migration and socio-economic change in Cornwall

Kowalczuk, Katarzyna January 2011 (has links)
The thesis provides a deeper understanding of migration flows to high amenity areas using the example of migration to and from Cornwall. Cornwall is a remote, non-metropolitan county which has been experiencing very strong population growth since the 1970s almost solely due to in-migration. There are several aspects of the project that should contribute to an understanding of internal migration in England and Wales. First, a cohort analysis of migrants brings insights into the migration strategies of in-migrants and out-migrants throughout the period. Using the case of Cornwall allows the examination of migration patterns in a peripheral location where commuting opportunities are limited, and allows comparison with a more accessible rural area, Wiltshire. Secondly, through the creation of a new area type classification the project helps to explore the environmental dimension of migration. The typology is used to investigate the residential patterns of migrants and non-migrants and to test the hypothesis that environmental preferences are significant in the choice by in-migrants of where to live. Finally, The research investigates some pressing issues in Cornwall, issues which are relevant also for other non-metropolitan areas, such as the shortage of affordable housing, the detrimental impact of tourism and poor economic development, and their links with migration. The research focuses especially on labour market problems and housing need, due to their policy relevance. Comparisons between the migrant and non-migrant populations provide the basis for estimating the impacts of migration on the restructuring of labour and housing markets in Cornwall.

Drömmen om livet nära Bullerbyn : Hur används argument för att övertyga nya inflyttare till Högsby kommun och relatera de till utländska fritidshusköpares motiv?

Kilian, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
Sweden is a popular holiday destination for people from all over Europe. Its beautiful nature, the possibility of various outdoor-activities and the quintessential Swedish traditions and life-style attract tourists and potential holiday-home-owners alike. Citizens especially from countries such as Denmark, Norway and Germany are buying houses mainly in the southern and western parts of Sweden, searching for a better, easier and more relaxed life in the Swedish countryside. In my study I chose "Högsby kommun", a small municipality situated in the county of Kalmar in Småland as an exemplary case-study to show how Swedish communities deal with the steady decline of inhabitants. The aim of the study is to examine how arguments are used to convince immigrants in moving to Högsby kommun and how they relate to motives of foreign second home owners. Which arguments are used in promoting the place and what kinds of motives have foreign buyers of second homes to choose Högsby kommun as a place to stay? It is a qualitative case study, information is collected through interviews with employee of Högsby kommun and real estate agents, a content analysis of brochures and e-mail questionnaire with second home owners from Germany. The theoretical approaches are counterurbanisation in relation to lifestyle, theory of place identity and promotion of places and research of the motives in buying a second home. The results of the study show that arguments and motives building on each other. The arguments are promoting mainly a beautiful nature, quietness, a relaxed lifestyle and inexpensive housing - all of this are even motives for  foreign second home buyers moving to Högsby kommun.

34 hektar runt Acksjön : En studie om kontraurbana migranters föredragna platser för boende i Karlstads kommun

Laring, Oskar January 2015 (has links)
A main trend of demographic change – urbanisation – has a quiet companion called counter-urbanisation which is designated to the migration of groups and individuals from urban to rural areas. Counter-urbanisation is valuable for the rural culture in decline as well as for contributing to solving the arising challenges of urban areas. However, the rural area of Sweden is large and finding a place to settle might be hard. Both migrants and authorities promoting this migration may have an interest in the mapping of preferable habitats in rural areas from a counter-urbanisation perspective. Therefore, this report investigates the possibilities of procuring a method for said rural mapping. Contemporary Swedish research is consulted for specific counter-urban migrants’ choices of where to migrate. The preferred places found in the study are analysed with the geographic information system software ArcGIS. Results show a method for mapping rural areas preferred by a hypothetical statistically compiled individual can be procured.

Populační vývoj a současné migrační tendence venkovských obcí Jižních Čech / Population development and current migration tendencies of rural municipalities of South Bohemia

Edelmanová, Denisa January 2019 (has links)
Transformation of Czech society after 1989 caused changes in spatial migration patterns. After strong socialist urbanization and during post-socialist suburbanization, people also began to move from towns to more remote rural areas. The subject of the thesis is the evaluation of the rural area of South Bohemia in terms of changes in its population and migration development in 1992-2017. Firstly, the thesis briefly analyzes the long-term population development of individual municipalities with extended power of South Bohemia in the context of the whole Czechia and then analyzes the types (positional and size) of rural municipalities of South Bohemia when solving their population growth, stagnation or depopulation and reveals the role of natural currency and migration balance in this population development. The main part of the thesis is an analysis of the internal migration of municipalities of South Bohemia in 1992-2017, namely migration flows between rural municipalities (semi-peripheral and peripheral) on the one hand and urban regions, including core towns (important and less important) and surrounding suburban municipalities, on the second hand. The main aim of the thesis is research the counterurbanization of South Bohemia based on the above mentioned migration flows. Especially after 1997,...

Pendeltåg och digital dialog driver grön våg : En fallstudie över hur samhällsutveckling har påverkat kontraurbanisering i Uppsala län

Bjellerup, Victoria, Bäckström, Lisa January 2021 (has links)
This thesis has studied urban to rural migration, often referred to as counterurbanisation. The study has adapted a mixed method where quantitative statistical data has been complemented with a qualitative interview study. The quantitative results have established to what extent counterurbanization movements flow in Uppsala County. The quantitative results show small flows of migrants, which the qualitative results verify. The study has also investigated people's motivations for the move to more rural areas to determine aligned motives. The results show that the motives are more or less the same as in previous studies and can be summarized in the motivational factors, economy, structure, and behavior. Furthermore, the study has also identified enabling factors that facilitate people's possibility to move to rural areas. The results show that the last decades fast digital and infrastructural development has had an impact on this possibility, where commuting, road network, growing rural communities, internet and remote work are the most crucial enabling factors.

Lugn och ro och återhämtning i en kaosartad värld : En hermeneutisk studie om livsstilsmigration från stad till landsbygd i Sverige

Jaff, Daniel January 2022 (has links)

HŘIVNÁČ, Radek January 2019 (has links)
The Diploma Thesis focuses on the general characteristics of the internal and external migration in the area of South Bohemia. One of the most important part of the thesis is the division and the definition of the migration regions of South Bohemia and their comparison with the migration regions according to J. Čekal and administration units SO ORP. The thesis also shows the geographical characteristics of South Bohemia and its historical development of the population and migration. The main part of the Diploma thesis is the analysis of the migration in the region with the help of migration indicators. South Bohemia is a profit region in 1991-2015, the arrival of the new inhabitants is seen mainly in the area of České Budějovice and the regions around bigger county cities. The thesis is also focused on the counterurbanisation flows in the chosen migration area Český Krumlov where the bigger migration activity from the bigger cities did not prove itself. The results are presented with the help of cartographical, graphical and table charts that enable better interpretation of the research.
