Macaya Alvarez, Francisco January 2012 (has links)

Henry Watterson, The Coincidental Redeemer

Zenick, Gerold 08 1900 (has links)
The major conclusion of this thesis is that Henry Watterson, while representative of the Redeemer element, was the product of a Jacksonian, rather than a Whig, heritage which had an ideology quite similar to the Redeemer appeal. In determining his exact philosophy the study shows that the editor was quite different from his contemporaries in the New South in both the substance and integrity of his beliefs.

American media depiction of terrorism in the U.S after September 11 Attacks

Trinh, Maria Thuy 25 November 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze perceptions of terrorism through the analysis of two newspapers’ news coverage of terrorism after the September 11 attacks, a popular Kentucky newspaper, the Courier-Journal and the New York Times (NYT). The social construction of terrorism was reflected as a problem through moral panics or something that a society believed as wrong that needed to be eradicated. Previous research had found that newspapers have contributed to moral panics by exaggerating the scope of social problems such as school shootings. I used the theoretical framework of moral panics; Goode and Ben-Yehuda’s (2009) two criteria of moral panics, which were (1) concern and (2) volatility; portrayals of heroes, folk devils, and victims in moral panics; and war on terror as sensitizing concepts to find themes. I analyzed 500 the CJ newspaper articles and 500 the NYT articles from September 11, 2001 to August 30, 2018 to find the differences between both newspapers, identify portrayals, and determine how terrorism was socially constructed. Overall, I found differences between the two newspapers on how they depicted terrorism and themes on how both newspapers reported and described terrorism. The reporting on terrorism has implications to the overall handling of terrorism such as the Muslim Travel Ban.

An Analysis of a Major State and a Small Local Newspaper Reporting on Public Education in the Years 1988 and 1993

Gindt, Gerard J. (Gerard Joseph) 05 1900 (has links)
This study was conducted to analyze the differences in the news coverage of public education by a state and local newspaper, to ascertain if trends exist in the coverage of topics, and if the coverage is negative, positive, or neutral. All issues of The Dallas Morning News and The Piano Star Courier from the years 1988 and 1993 were evaluated. All articles about public education (with the exception of athletics, obituaries, and advertisements) were evaluated using a content analysis form. The content analysis form provided information for classifying all articles. Information was tallied for the number of articles and column inches by newspaper and category. Findings indicated a number of differences between the two newspapers in 1988 and 1993. The Dallas Morning News increased the number of articles and column inches of space it committed to the coverage of public education from 1988 to 1993. During the same period The Piano Star Courier reduced both the number of articles and column inches of space which it used for the topic of education. The Piano Star Courier began publishing editions on only five of the seven days per week in February, 1993. The Dallas Morning News reduced its local coverage and increased its coverage of state and national education topics during the same period. The change in coverage was shown through the increased number of articles and space allocated to state and national topics. Changes also occurred in the number of negative articles published by the newspapers. The Dallas Morning News increased the number of negative articles as it focused on state and national news. The Piano Star Courier reduced the number of negative articles as it focused on local topics. The findings also indicate that certain categories of articles are more likely to present education in a positive manner. Local education news stories are more likely to be positive than state or national stories. Personal stories about students and/or teachers tend to represent schools in a positive light. The topics of discipline, vandalism, finance, and administration usually have a more negative effect. Findings reveal that differing trends exist in major state and local newspaper coverage of public education. Knowledge of these trends can help educators promote a positive image of public education.

Vale, Marco Antonio Pereira do 26 March 2015 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to make a study and a comparative discussion on how two important social characters are portrayed by the Brazilian cinema in a set, delimited, of movies: the Metallurgical and the Motoboy. Through an aesthetic and narrative analysis, investigating as filmmakers cast their eyes on contemporary reality and built a visual imagery of these professional categories. Based on authors like Bernardet (2003), Tomizaki (2007), Eisenstein (1990), Pudovkin (1961), Silva (2011), Nichols (1991) among others discussing the issue, we analyze six Brazilian documentaries depicting the life and saga of the protagonists of this study. It also refers to collate domestic production in relation to foreign filmmakers that have produced on the subject, about related films such as The Working class goes to paradise (1971), Easy rider (1969) and other examples. The analysis includes a discussion of technical issues ranging from cameras placement, taken to the assembly and soundtrack. Among findings, it can be observed that, while the metallurgical built an identity to society, couriers remain a disturbing unknown, characters who come who knows where, living in an eternal and cruel fate, without future prospects, working in a dangerous profession and somewhat discredited by the population. The research process of the thesis are the basis and the guidance for a new documentary to be finalized and intended as a cine reflection on the progress and setbacks on the expectations and disappointments of industrial and urban modernization project of Brazilian society.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Luís Augusto De Mola Guisard.pdf: 1274895 bytes, checksum: 97cdf8920a0e607f2f715c83c60d4c3a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-04-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The thesis aimed at understanding how hurriedness originated as a symbol of contemporary city life, and seeking possibilities of resisting such hegemony. The research was driven by an individual feeling of uneasiness about hurriedness as a universal value: hurriedness deviated from its natural role in order to meet life-specific urgencies, such as the urgency of an escaping animal, a child going for a moment of fun, or a bodyguard to the rescue. Hurriedness is constant in city life, which does not seem consistent with man’s vital impulses. It is an outer element that arose at some point in history. Taking as hypothesis that the hurriedness we currently experience, disconnected from our nature, denies life values, this paper consisted in a genealogical study of hurriedness. Such genealogical analysis was permeated by the idea that an extemporary posture, of non-compliance to the current values is required, as a way of enabling criticism to the hurriedness value. In order to serve this purpose, two main authors were used as reference: Nietzsche and Foucault. The first provided the cornerstone to face the task of attempting to understand hurriedness in its actual dimensions, while the latter enabled outlining the elements of the historical construction of hurriedness, including in the most recent period: throughout the twentieth century. As a resource of analysis, the figure used was that of a motorcycle courier, which a hasty professional in the São Paulo metropolis, representing the metaphor of a superfluous life, a hostage of productive hurriedness that serves the urgency of capital, not of life. Indeed, the motorcycle courier is the metaphor of the hastiness that is often true to all of us. The analysis enabled reaching the idea that hurriedness was a historical construction. It meets the contemporary rationality, since its early origins when the intelligible world was valued over the sensitive world of the Socratic and Platonic traditions, making its way to the neoliberal order of the twentieth century, by formatting the self-made man-machine, wrapped in a spirit of gravity. The conclusion is all the more exciting: there has been a form of society when constant hurriedness was not prevalent, during the tragic period, and currently, there are signs of resistance to hurriedness, such as those represented by the movements asserting the logic of slow. After all, according to Nietzsche’s Zarathustra, “Not by wrath does one kill, but by with laughter. Come, let us kill the spirit of gravity!”
