EFFECTS OF EXERCISE AND MENTAL FATIGUE ON RESPONSE INHIBITION IN EXERCISE-TRAINED VERSUS SEDENTARY COLLEGE STUDENTS

Grosz, Rachael Lorraine 18 August 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if fitness levels of individuals affect cognitive function. This study seeks to show how response inhibition and accuracy are affected following a mentally fatiguing task. Response inhibition refers to the suppression of actions that are inappropriate and that interfere with goal driven behavior. Response inhibition in reference to the continuous performance task (CPT) is measured in false clicks. The tasks for the CPT were completed after either a controlled period of rest or moderate-intensity exercise. Subjects were either Georgia Tech Division I track athletes or students leading a sedentary lifestyle. All subjects participated in two test protocols. Athletic subjects completed the resting protocol first, while sedentary subjects completed the exercise protocol first. Subjects reported to the lab following an overnight fast. They completed an initial set of paper work and signed a consent form, filled out a 24 hour history form and completed a Profile of Moods States (POMS) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) form. Subjects then took a 20-minute (CPT). The CPT is a neuropsychological test that measures an individual’s sustained and selective attention. The length of the test is 20 minutes in order to induce mental fatigue. The goal of the test is to click in a white box when the letter T is seen. Immediately after subjects filled out a secondary set of paperwork. Once paper work was complete subjects either rested or exercised for 35 minutes. If subject was classified as an athlete, trial 1 was rest, while trial 2 was exercise. If subject was classified as a sedentary student, trial 1 was exercise, and trial 2 was rest. After the subject completed either the cycling or resting portion they repeated the CPT for five minutes. It was hypothesized that that the effects of moderate exercise positively affect the subject’s performance on the CPT. I expect false clicks following the 5 minute CPT to be lower after exercising. I hypothesize that for both groups their accuracy should be higher after moderate cycling and that higher fitness level should decrease the level of mental fatigue experienced throughout the CPT.

An Empirical Study of NIN-AND Tree Elicitation

Truong, Minh 15 September 2011 (has links)
Constructing a Bayesian Network requires the conditional probabilities table (CPT) to be acquired, one for each variable or node in the network. When data mining is not available, CPTs must be acquired from the domain experts. The complexity of the direct elicitation is exponential on the number of parents of a variable, making direct elicitation from human experts impractical for a large number of causes. Causal models such as Noisy-OR, Noisy-AND, Noisy-MIN, Noisy-MAX and Recursive Noisy-OR have been developed that allow CPTs acquisition to be achieved with linear complexity on the number of causes. Their representation power is measured by their ability to encode the causal interactions. Causal interactions can be categorized into two types: reinforcing and undermining. The Non-Impeding Noisy-AND or NIN-AND tree causal model, developed by Xiang and Jia, is capable of modeling both types of interaction while retaining the linear complexity. The main challenge in utilizing the NIN-AND tree model to generate a CPT is that it requires its tree topology to be elicited. A NIN-AND tree topology is an encoding of the causal interactions between the causes. In this work we present two methods, Structure Elimination (SE) and Pairwise Causal Interaction (PCI), that allow indirect elicitations of the NIN-AND tree topology using some additional probabilities elicited from experts. We conduct human-based experiment to investigate the e ectiveness of the two methods in terms of accuracy by comparing them to the Direct Numerical (DN) elicitation method. We recruit participants from second year Computer Science students at the University of Guelph. The process involves training a participant into domain expert using a known NIN-AND tree model then acquire another NIN-AND tree model by applying the SE and PCI methods. The CPTs produced by the acquired NIN-AND tree models are then compared to the one obtained by using the DN method. Comparable CPT accuracies are obtained among models generated by di erent methods, even though SE and PCI requires a much smaller number of parameters in comparison to DN.

______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research has as it's central problematic the study of the relationship between the activities against Contemporany Slave Work that are being promoted by the Pastoral Land Commission and the development of a critical conscience among rural workers in slavery condition in Tocantins, Brazil. This catholic church commission, established in 1975, aims to be a tool on the struggle for land and effecuation rural workers rights. The referred study helped to understand how the workers collective representations about their condition were built and how new cultures, opposing the tradicional land domination in Brazil, are beeing developed. Discussing this hegemonic relationship, based on Gramsci's ideas, was applied the historical-materialism and the dialectical method. The methodological procedures used were the bibliographical and documental research, the participant observation and semi-structured interviews with the slave workers, public authorities and members of the Commission. Through this research it was possible to conclude that the actions developed by the Pastoral Land Commission in Civil and Political Society are increasing the level of awareness among the enslaved rural workers. By building a network of information on Contemporary Slave Work, struggle for Agrarian Reform and coordinating public agencies, it has been possible to create a new remark on this indignity situation. Workers started to recognize that they have been enslaved and that their working conditions are unfair. This recognition stimulates resistance action, such as complaints against employees and scapes from the labor's camp. It also brings the awareness that the employment relationship is not a path to freedom.

At zero temperature we find that these symmetries can be violated, but at finite temperature we show that there is a critical temperature at which the Lorentz and CPT symmetries are restored. We show that it is possible obtain the Friedmann equation in five dimensions in the presence of terms that violate the Lorentz symmetries , and as solution of this equation we find that the evolution of the universe is not usual, oscillating between accelerated phases and desaccelerated phases. We analyse the extension of the quantum eletrodynamics in the limit of high temperatures. Our aim is study the modifications that the Lorentz violation can cause in the free energy of the quantum eletrodynamics and with this to use experimental data related the free energy to estimate a numeric value to the parameter of Lorentz violation. We study a proposal of modification of the gravitation, this proposal consist in adding the Chern-Simons term to the usual gravitation. The issue most notable in this theory of gravitation is the search for solutions that occur in the general relativity and that somehow persist in this new theory. We show that for a given choice of scalar field that is introduced together with the Chern-Simons term, it is possible to find important solutions of the general relativity in this new theory of gravitation, as the Schwarzschild solution, the G¨odel metric, among others. We study with emphasis the G¨odel solution, showing that it is possible the existence this solution in the modified theory when we interpret the scalar field as a external field and when we interpret this same field as a dynamic field, this last interpretation leads the important modifications in parameter of the theory.

January 2011 (has links)
This work presents an application study of the Conservative Power Theory (CPT) in the generation of control reference for a Parallel Active Power Filter (PAF), in order to compensate current disturbances in a Three-phase three-wite electrical power system. Some of the most important power teories find in literature have also been summarized, especially those related to active filter controlling techniques. Special attention was given for the CPT, since is a recent proposal and it allows the selection of the disturbance to be compensated through the definition of different control references using different CPT current parcels. An alternative methodology has also been proposed tot the design of the parallel active power filter, which is based on the analysis of the load by means of the CPT current decomposition and according to a previously defined selective compensating strategy. Therefore, it is possible to analyze the economic viability of the active power filter implementation if choosing the most important disturbance to be compensated, obvioulsly assuming a specific load configuration. Other important contribution was the discussion of a new power factor definition (proposed by the CPT), which considers not only the load reactive behavior, but also the effects of current unbalances and distortions on the efficiency of the power circuit. Based on this new definition, we observe the necessity of revising the normalized referential values in order to ensure a proper accountability or revenue metering methodology. Finally, the theoretical studies and the CPT application for controlling a parallel active filter were validated by means of computational simulations using PSIM software / Mestre

The standard penetration test (SPT) is the most commonly used in situ test for obtaining the required geotechnical parameters for foundation analysis and design in Brazil. Since in most situations only SPT data is available, the search for new SPT-CPT correlations is necessary. However, most of the available SPT-CPT correlations in Brazil have been established for soils of southern regions of the country. New local correlations for other soil types are therefore necessary. This study aims at determining correlations between the SPT resistance number (NSPT), and the CPT tip resistance (qc) and sleeve friction resistance (fs) for a silty sand deposit at the city of Natal, at the Northeast coast of Brazil. Using linear fittings and a simplified geostatistic approach, correlations were obtained for 88 SPT boreholes and eight CPT boreholes. The NSPT blowcount values where corrected for the energy of 60%. SPT-CPT correlations were devised using the following approaches: variogram analysis, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and ordinary kriging.

A Time Study of Audiological Practice Patterns and the Impact of Reimbursement Changes from Third Part Payers

Tucker, Melody A 13 April 2001 (has links)
The primary objective of the project was to survey audiologists in clinical practice setting to determine the amount of time taken to perform various audiologic tests using Current Procedural Terminology, (CPT) codes to define these tests and if these CPT codes were felt to be adequate. Audiologists were also asked to respond regarding possible impact and reimbursement changes in their clinical practices related to managed care. Responses of audiologists were analyzed to determine: a) adequacy of CPT codes; b)average time to perform various audiologic tests; c) impact managed care onclinical practice; and d) changes in reimbursement as a result of managed care. The survey was designed to determine the type of work setting, typical job duty, average monthly caseload and hours per day spent on patient care for each respondent. The survey with a cover letter explaining the purpose was mailed to 93 audiologists in clinical setting in the state of Florida. Five were returned undeliverable, and 39 of the remaining 88 were returned either completed or partially completed. The survey results revealed over 71% of the audiologists felt the current CPT codes were adequate. Time spent performing traditional audiologic tests, such as comprehensive audiometric evaluations and impedance testing, was fairly consistent. Greater time variability occurred in tests used to determine vestibular function. Over three-quarters of the respondents believed managed care has had a negative impact on their clinical practices, while 11% believe they have been positively impacted. Approximately 82% of the audiologists have had reductions in reimbursement as a result of managed care, while 10% have seen no change and 5% have enjoyed slightly greater reimbursement.
