The Crescent Moon School : the poets, poetry, and poetics of a modern conservative intellectual group in Republican China

Ma, Xuecong January 2017 (has links)
The Crescent Moon School (新月派Xinyue pai) is a Chinese intellectual group that was active from 1923 to 1934. Its members include Xu Zhimo (1896-1965), and many other Anglo-American educated scholars in the Republican era. Although the group was engaged in various activities, poetry was their primary concern and their most notable practice. This thesis intends to solve two problems: 1) what common values or core spirit guided the various cultural practices of the group? 2) what are the poetic features and underlying poetics of the group as a whole? To answer the two questions, this thesis firstly examines the core spirit of the group by reviewing their activities and historical development. It argues that underlying the various activities and facts, there was a core spirit shared by the group. This core spirit, which I refer to as the “modern conservative spirit”, reflected a unique understanding of modernity that was different from that of the May Fourth discourse. They understood modernity not as a negation of tradition, but as a critical synthesis and mutual conformity between the old and the new, the local and the global. I show how the Crescent Moon intellectuals acquired this core spirit, and how it was displayed in their various activities. Secondly, this thesis provides detailed textual analysis of several Crescent Moon poems and reconstructs their poetics. It argues that their poetics demonstrated three faces, i.e. a romantic temperament, a classic ideal, and a modern consciousness. The three faces coexisted throughout the poetic practice of the group, although a certain face might have dominated in a certain period. I demonstrate how the three faces were unified under the guidance of the modern conservative spirit, and I argue that the simultaneousness of the three faces embodied the modern conservative intellectuals’ pursuit of literary modernity. By discussing the core spirit and poetics of the Crescent Moon School, this thesis concludes that the group was a missing link in Republican modern conservative trend, linking the late 1910s and early 1920s neotraditionalist thinkers with the mid-1930s Beijing School writers. The modern conservative intellectuals represented a dissenting voice in the Republican era, but they were also committed pursuers of modernity and cosmopolitanism.

Where's the sense in staying neutral? : - Exploring the possibility of Neutral Humanitarianism in the 21st century.

D'Arro`, Evelina January 2010 (has links)
The Red Cross, Red Crescent and Red Crystal Movement is the largest humanitarian movement in the world with 97 million volunteer workers around the globe. The organisation relies on seven fundamental principles, the Neutrality Principle being one of them. The questions of this essay are: *Is it yet possible to provide neutral humanitarian aid in the 21st century? *Have the humanitarian crisis’s changed between the 20th century and the 21st century?

Gunboat diplomacy, mutiny and national identity in the postwar Royal Canadian Navy : the cruise of HMCS Crescent to China, 1949

Gimblett, Richard Howard 25 April 2018 (has links)
On 15 March 1949, HMCS Crescent was alongside in Nanking, China when she became one of three ships of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) to suffer a mutinous "incident" within the space of three weeks. The subsequent commission of inquiry found no subversive elements, but even as The Mainguy Report has entered the mythology of the RCN our understanding of the mutinies remains incomplete. This dissertation explores the inter-relationship of two fundamental questions: how did the perceived threat of a fleetwide breakdown in discipline come to pass?, and, what was a Canadian warship doing up the Yangtze River in the middle of the Chinese Civil War? The hypothesis is that the cruise of HMCS Crescent to China can be seen as a case study in the challenges to national identity faced by a country trying to make its mark internationally when its foreign policy and military establishments are still both in the early stages of development. A wide variety of primary records is used to present an original "from the bottom up" perspective into Canadian diplomatic and naval policies. Crescent's despatch to China was the only operational cruise undertaken by the RCN between the end of the Second World War and the outbreak of the Korean conflict. It was also the first independent foreign policy initiative of the new, interventionist ministry of Louis St Laurent and Lester Pearson. Yet, even in this uniqueness, the cruise remains representative of the Canadian experience with gunboat diplomacy. On another level, while the generally poor state of service conditions described in The Mainguy Report were contributing factors to unrest, a social analysis of Crescent reveals that many of them were already being addressed. The incidents of 1949 were discreet events and not symptomatic of the widespread discontent which indeed had existed two years earlier.

Celi, Guilherme Cezere January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to confront the theory of land rent of David Ricardo with the theory of Adam Smith. It means that this dissertation will try to find in the “Wealth of Nation” a theory of land rent and show that Adam Smith have a theory as better as the analyze of land rent by David Ricardo. The dissertation will analyze the land rent by the conception of economic development. It means verify what theory has more condition to explain the economic development by optic of the land fertility. The specific aim will be prove that technical progress and increase fertility, inside analyze of Smith, can confront Ricardo’ theory and verify that land productive, inside analyze of both authors, is important to keep economic development and progress of nations. To build this work, it will be find references own by Adam Smith and David Ricardo, papers by others authors that study the theory of this two authors and books that make connection between technical progress and land fertility.

QUANTIFICATION OF MYOCARDIAL MECHANICS IN LEFT VENTRICLES UNDER INOTROPIC STIMULATION AND IN HEALTHY RIGHT VENTRICLES USING 3D DENSE CMR

Liu, Zhan-Qiu 01 January 2019 (has links)
Statistical data from clinical studies indicate that the death rate caused by heart disease has decreased due to an increased use of evidence-based medical therapies. This includes the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is one of the most common non-invasive approaches in evidence-based health care research. In the current work, I present 3D Lagrangian strains and torsion in the left ventricle of healthy and isoproterenol-stimulated rats, which were investigated using Displacement ENcoding with Stimulated Echoes (DENSE) cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. With the implementation of the 12-segment model, a detailed profile of regional cardiac mechanics was reconstructed for each subject. Statistical analysis revealed that isoproterenol induced a significant change in the strains and torsion in certain regions at the mid-ventricle level. In addition, I investigated right ventricular cardiac mechanics with the methodologies developed for the left ventricle. This included a comparison of different regions within the basal and mid-ventricular regions. Despite no regional variation found in the peak circumferential strain, the peak longitudinal strain exhibited regional variation at the anterior side of the RV due to the differences in biventricular torsion, mechanism of RV free wall contraction, and fiber architecture at RV insertions. Future applications of the experimental work presented here include the construction and validation of biventricular finite element models. Specifically, the strains predicted by the models will be statistically compared with experimental strains. In addition, the results of the present study provide an essential reference of RV baseline evaluated with DENSE MRI, a highly objective technique.

South African studio ceramics, c.1950s : the Kalahari Studio, Drostdy Ware and Crescent Potteries.

Gers, Wendy A. January 2000 (has links)
The oeuvre of the Kalahari Studio (Cape Town), Drostdy Ware (a division of Grahamstown Pottery, Grahamstown) and Crescent Potteries (Krugersdorp) is investigated within the historical context of the 1950s, a watershed period that witnessed crucial developments in South African cultural and political history. This dissertation elucidates the historical development, key personnel, the ceramics, as well as relevant technical information related to the Kalahari Studio, Drostdy Ware and Crescent Potteries. This dissertation analyses the broader socio-political and ideological paradigms that framed South African art-making, as well as the international design trends that influenced the local studio ceramics sector. The establishment and demise of the South African studio ceramics industry and requests for tariff protection were considered within this context. Significant primary research was conducted into the present status of South African studio ceramics from the 1950s in the collections of our heritage institutions. Wares of all three of the studios reveal a predilection for figurative imagery, especially images of indigenous African women and iconography derived from reproductions of Southern San parietal art. Imagery of African women is considered within the framework of the native study genre in South African painting, sculpture and photography from 1800-1950 and Africana ceramics from 1910-1950. Images of San parietal art are investigated within their historical context of a growing public and academic interest in the Bushmen and a surge in publications containing reproductions of San parietal art. Some images of African women and San parietal art conform to pejorative and theoretically problematic modernist cannons of the'other', while some are subversive and undermine the dominant pictorial and ideological artistic conventions. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2000.
