Social violence in Canada : theoretical frameworks and statistical implications

Williams, Kyle Randall 22 September 2008 (has links)
This project will be comprised of two chapters. The first section will include a comprehensive literature review component defining violence, exploring the current theoretical explanations of violence, as well as coming up with a better way to categorize causal factors and the role of institutions. The triad of social violence is proposed as a more effective theoretical discourse towards effectual social policy. The first section is intended to establish a theoretical link between naturally occurring social violence and social indicators such as poverty and population increases. In section two, I seek to illustrate the argument that declining violent crime rates in Canada are unnatural. Attitudes and public perceptions of the justice system will be statistically analyzed using the data from the General Social Survey on victimization. The relationship between deteriorating attitudes and declines in reported violence are then discussed in greater detail.

A Study on Suppressions and Preventions for Cleaning Out Property Issues in Publicly Held Corporations

Chen, Jen-Lung 06 September 2004 (has links)
Abstract The government, in assisting Taiwanese enterprises to compete in increasing globalization environment, imitated the European and American countries in establishing stock market, helped corporate bond issuance to finance capital projects, and in the 80¡¦s, allowed foreign investments to enter Taiwanese economy and gradually relaxing regulation to allow greater flexibilities. Because of this policy, Taiwanese Stock Market began to grow exponentially. The number of corporate IPOs mushroomed in great numbers. After 1997 Asian financial and economic crash severely damaged the market and economy. The idea of ¡§Get Rich Quick¡¨ from the West began to invade Taiwan. Many corporate upper management, especially the second generation owners of family enterprises with higher education in international financial operations, broke away from their core business operations and traditional values and began to focus on high risk investment products and speculative investment vehicles. They even use cross-shareholding of stocks, stock speculations, illegal loans and profit sharing, misleading and fraudulent financial reporting to expand their businesses. As the result of their negligence of risk management and miscalculations of economic conditions, corporations experienced severe cash crunch from investment losses and were unable to cover the cash shortage through over-leveraged assets and illegal corporate financial schemes. Many corporations crumpled, causing wide spread lay-off and significant losses by investing public. It also affects many upper, middle, and lower stream merchants, vendors, and financial institutions. The resulting chain reactions from corporate bankruptcies, reorganizations, and stock de-listings caused major ramifications in Taiwan¡¦s social, political, economic, and financial systemsDuring the more than ten years of past criminal investigations of illegal activities in public companies, the media, financial, legal and accounting experts all provided their suggestions in how to prevent these cases. However, other than providing some tabloid news on newspapers, it regrettably has not helped in assisting the investigations or in preventing new cases. This thesis summarizes the major financial and money laundering activities preventive measures, and criminal investigations in Taiwan. It will compare and analyze the various case backgrounds, methods of operations, ramifications, and legal consequences in order to find similar characteristics of these cases from past investigative experiences, evidence gatherings, money trail tracings, and legal procedures. From these analyses, the thesis will make conclusions and suggestions in hope of shortening the investigative process in future cases, so that the investigation can start on the right track immediately to prevent the domino effects on the stock market and economy and minimize damage on economic conditions, and to reach the goal of ¡§To Detect is to Prevent¡¨.

A Study of Drug Prevention and Legal System

-chun, chang 08 August 2006 (has links)
The US put Taiwan into the list of drug trafficking country in 1990. The image of Taiwan has been seriously damaged so our government changed the ¡§Drug Purging Statute of Suppressing Rebellion Period¡¨ to ¡§Statute of Drug Purging¡¨ in July 1992. The purpose of the law especially to get rid of the drug abuse, prevent from drug harm, save guard the health of the people, sustain the social order and avoid the country falling into danger. But the effect of the anti-drug abuse policy is so limited, the drug abuse issues are still getting worse. The cases are increasing day by day. Due to the complicated causes of drug abuse criminals, the criminals couldn't be corrected by prison¡¦s education and management. Therefore it's necessary to review and discuss the drug abuse prevention policy. Government formally announced ¡§to Fight against Drugs Abuse¡¨, on 12 May 1993 and ¡§Central Meeting Report¡¨ organization was set up. Nationwide anti-drug abuse meeting was held in June 1994. The means of anti-drug abuse were proposed in the meeting, which were to cut the suppliers and reduce the needs. Three key important work of the strategy of anti-drug are to crack down, reject ant quit drug. Then Government promulgated ¡§Drug Risk Prevention Stipulate¡¨ and revoked the ¡§Drug Purging Statute¡¨. For the drug abusers, first to force them to quit drug, accept therapy, exonerate from criminal law but guilt and pay attention to medical therapy. This was a revolution change of drug abuse prevention policy. ¡§Narcotic & Drug Control Stipulate¡¨ was amended¡¨ to ¡§Drug Control & Management Statute¡¨ on 2 June 1999 and changed the ¡§Division of Drug Management¡¨ to ¡§Bureau of Drug Control &Management¡¨. Owing to Taiwan¡¦s hard work on anti-drug, the US International Narcotics Control Strategy Report expelled Taiwan from the list of the world main production and trafficking country. However after issue of the ¡§Drug Risk Prevention Stipulate¡¨, thousands drug abusers are in and out of the Observing & Quitting Asylum or Quitting & Therapy Asylum every year. The degree of flooding of drug abuse has affected to society, economy, polity and regulation policy, so ¡§Drug Risk Prevention Stipulate¡§ was modified again to meet the real need and guarantee the human right in Sept. 2004. Since the newly amended law, ¡§Drug Risk Prevention Stipulate¡§, went into effect on 9 Sept. 2004, the drug crimes and related ferocious criminal cases have been happened frequently. Prisons are filled with drug criminals. That drug abuse is harmful not only to the people¡¦s mental but to the health is still exist, so the legislation and realization of Drug Prevention Statute is still dubious to the people. Through this approach, suggestions are supplied for reference about the legislation and adaptability situation of the Drug Prevention and hopefully to make our drug abuse flooding situation improved and controlled.

Analyze the Taiwanese region crime rate function with the cointegration

Lin, Kun-feng 02 February 2007 (has links)
Economy is an very important factor to the cause of crimes. The unemployment rate play a key role to the economy side of a society. Besides, the probability of being arrested is also been calculated by the offenders. So this paper tries to use the crime rate ,clearance rate , unemployment rate , as variables to discuss their relations. This paper selects 138 data samples from January, 1995 to June, 2006, analyze them by Literature Survey Method¡BUnit Root Test Method¡BJohansen of Maximum Likelihood Estimation Method. The result shows that constantly descend in the other conditions, when the unemployment rate increases by 1%, causing the crime rate to increase by 3.38%, namely the unemployment rate increases the function for the crime rate. When the clearance rate increase by 1%, the crime rate will be reduced by 0.67%, meaning that then clearance rate can reduce the function of the crime rate.
