God's image or man's glory? : a Kenyan postcolonial feminist reading of 1 Corinthians 11:1-16.Mwaniki, Lydia Muthoni. January 2011 (has links)
This study uses a postcolonial feminist analysis to show how a biblical text (1 Cor 11:1-16),
because of its patriarchal and imperial background, excludes women from the image of God. It
demonstrates how this text has been taken up, developed and appropriated to support the
subordination of women throughout the Christian tradition from the Church Fathers to the
reformers and right up to the present day postcolonial Kenyan Church context. While this text
has been used for a long time to oppress women, this study argues that a critical reading of the
text from a postcolonial feminist perspective shows that gender disparity exists in this and in
other gender-biased Pauline and post-Pauline texts because they were based on the existing
patriarchal and imperial structures, which subordinated women to men. Further the study
demonstrates that the texts have continued to subordinate women to men throughout the history
of Christian tradition. Most churches, such as the Anglican Church, express belief in the
Scriptures. Yet such churches like the Anglican Church of Kenya, which seemingly supports
gender equality through its gender inclusive article in its Constitution, does not offer guidance
about how such texts are to be read and appropriated by Christians. The study offers a method to
fill this gap. It is hoped that the academy and the church will avail themselves of this method in
their reading practices of the Bible. It takes into account the history of gender and imperial biases

This work is a contextual study of five selected biblical texts from the Fourth Gospel: John 2:1-12 and John 19:25-29; John 4:1-42; John 11:1-12:1-11 and John 18:15-17. Its aim is to read the selected texts with a Rwandan woman’s eyes, focusing on her peacemaking role and her potential as an agent of reconciliation. It is motivated by the context of the Rwandan situation during and after the catastrophic genocide of 1994. This work seeks to open the eyes of Rwandan women toward the role of peacemaking and unity-building by using a combined approach to conflict resolution. This approach includes the application of some theories in the domain of sociology, as well as the contextual biblical approach. Thus, it combines the capacity of awareness of conflicts in the community and its pain in the victim, and strives to restore the broken relationship caused by the conflict. The reading of the biblical texts with Rwandan eyes and the dialogue with the texts pointed out that the women used some tools in the gospel for success in the role of peacemaking and peace-building in their communities. The main tools are listed in the data findings of the exegesis. But mainly the transcendence of conflictual myths of origin to with kinship ties was found to be a major tool for breaking the kind of barriers which could lead to genocide. This research also highlights the failure of women in that domain because of their lack of transcendence of obligations based on regional and kinship ties. They fail to display their ubumuntu and their ubunyampinga. They rather point fingers at the victims instead of siding with or shielding them. Various suggestions are made for women to play a successful role in bringing about true and lasting peace and reconciliation, pointing out some ways in which Rwandan women can help to restore unity and trust among the population. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2012.

The scope of the thesis is a reflection on the present marriage process within the church, focusing particularly on the U.P.C.S.A. This reflection is done through exegesis of Mark 10:2-12, using Professor J. Draper's tri-polar exegetical model. The aim is to broaden the church's understanding of the marriage process, thus making this key transition in peoples' lives more profound. This Thesis endeavours to bring together doctrine and praxis, through both textual and contextual analysis. Using Narrative and Ritual Theory at both the textual and contextual level, this thesis seeks to examine both the text and context in a new and innovative way. The use of anthropological ritual models allows one not only to step back from the text, but also initiates doctrinal discussion at a practical level. Further both the text and context are examined through historical reflection, placing both the book of Mark and present the marriage doctrines in their broad social, political and economic circumstance. Is the church's doctrine with regard to marriage adequately represented in praxis through the present wedding ceremony or have other forces lead to a misappropriation of Mark 10:2-12? The nature of the tri-polar exegetical model is that it is both dependent on the context for input and acknowledges that any exegesis must have an impact upon the lived-experience of the community of believers. Both present doctrine and praxis of marriage, I believe, are challenged in this thesis through a careful analysis of Mark 10:2-12, in the context of Mark through the use of both, ritual analysis and narrative criticism. In 2003, the church not only is faced with a crisis in respect of marriage and its decline, but it is also faced with an opportunity - the present increase in the interest in ritual. This thesis gives some insights into how the church can take up the challenge and use ritual as a tool of liberation. Primal worldview and the Bible : an African Christian contribution to a hermeneutical method from the perspective of the primal worldview, with particular reference to the Gikuyu of Kenya.wa Gatumu, Albert Kabiro. January 2000 (has links)
The cross-cultural transmission of the Christian faith sustains its growth and expansion. Indeed the reception of the Christian faith is from one cultural framework to another different cultural framework. However, this largely depends on the translation and the interpretation of the Bible, which has certainly been in agreement to the way the recipient cultures conceive reality. From the time Christianity came into existence, the introduction of biblical concepts on which Christianity stands in terms agreeable to the way the recipients conceive reality continues to offer a clear understanding of the same. Indeed, this has been from the perspective of the primal worldview. However, this was not the case in Africa, where the primal worldview was demonised, degraded and anathematised by the missionary enterprises. This indeed denied the Africa converts a chance to engage with the Bible in ways they would call their own, for they conceive reality in terms shaped by their primal worldview. This study has the Glkilyfi primal worldview as its particular reference, to whom the missionaries transmitted the biblical knowledge selectively with the hermeneutical method they used. Now there is indisputable evidence that Christianity is growing fast in places where people conceive reality from the perspective of the primal worldview. To sustain and maintain this growth, the Bible ought to be interpreted and translated from the perspective of the primal worldview. This is necessary because the growth of Christianity depends on the right understanding of biblical concepts. Yet they are incomprehensible unless they receive an interpretation that is compatible to the way people conceive reality. In that case, there is need to investigate whether the former methods of interpreting and translating the Bible have adequately communicated the Gospel to African Christians. It is also necessary to investigate whether there is need for a hermeneutical method shaped by the primal worldview. This study contends that the former hermeneutical methods have not adequately communicated the complete Gospel to the African Christians. In that case, there is need for a hermeneutical method shaped by the primal worldview. Evidence that leads to the quest of a hermeneutical method generated by the primal worldview is from the history of the expansion of Christianity and from the phenomenology of religion. The primal worldview has tools on which hermeneutics can depend on, hence gaining valid operating principles. On the other hand, there is evidence from the Scripture that the interpretation of the new from the perspective of the old is possible. In that case, the old facilitates and enables the understanding of the new. The Epistle to the Hebrews is a perfect example, showing that the interpretation and translation of Scripture from the perspective of the primal worldview are possible. This will safeguard spirituality and the spiritual view of life, which hermeneutics need, and which the former hermeneutical methods seem to have jettisoned. However, the former hermeneutical methods are not all useless in the hermeneutical discourse. The hermeneutical method generated by the primal worldview can use them as servants but not as masters. Besides, the hermeneutical method generated by the primal worldview ought to have a future and significance, without which it can sink to oblivion. Two complementary aspects guarantee its future and significance. Firstly, it is its engagement with the ordinary readers of the Bible in their context. Secondly, it is in the use of the mother tongue, so that hermeneutics can be appreciable to both the ordinary and trained readers of the Bible. A study of the Bhagavadgita as an example of Indian oral-literate tradition.Mocktar, Hansraj. January 1995 (has links)
India has complex and sophisticated oral tradition which ha s
developed over millennia. The Sanskrit language has had an
enormous influence over the whole of India, especially its oral
tradition. The advent of the literate tradition in India which
began approximately five thousand years ago preserved (in
writing) much of the oral style elements. In chapter I of this
dissertation the influence of the Sanskrit language and its oral
transmission to various parts of the globe are briefly traced.
Marcel Jousse, in the early part of this century, developed
theories involving the anthropological basis governing human
expression. These are rooted in mimism, bilateralism and
formulism. Chapter 2 of this dissertation briefly outlines the
principles of Jousse's theories and provides a brief overview of
orality - literacy studies. The views of other experts in the
field like Parry, Lord, Finnegan and Ong are also discussed.
The Bhagavadgita (the chosen text) is a popular religious text
among Indians. Its style encapsulates the oral style elements of
Sanskrit literature. A brief summary of the first six discourses
which cover the philosophy of Karma Yoga are provided in Chapter
3. Selected slokas (couplets) of these discourses are used as a
basis to discuss certain formulaic techniques like a dialogue
within a dialogue, application of the Parry-Lord theory, use
of imagery (including simile, comparison and metaphor), use of
honorific names and the significance of numbers as mnemotechnical
devices. All these are elements of oral style.
The discussion of the philosophy of Bhakti Yoga (Yoga of
Devotion) takes up the next six discourses (discourses 7-12)
of the Bhagavadg1ta. Chapter 4 provides a brief summary of these
discourses. The elements of oral style which are i dentified and
discussed among slokas (couplets) in these discourses are the
propositional geste, parallelism, key words in a recitation and
contextual meaning.
The final chapter (chapter 5) deals with the philosophy of Jnana
Yoga (Yoga of Knowledge). The slokas (couplets) of the next six
discourses (13 - 18) which cover this philosophy are used as a
basis to identify and discuss the nine characteristics of oral
style as described by Ong, borrowing from other sources,
alliteration and assonance which are further elements of the oral
style.
This dissertation concludes that the oral formulaic style has
played a significant role in preserving the uniqueness, freshness

In this dissertation an examination of oral style in the Sixteen Vedic Sanskaras with particular reference to the Naming, Marriage and Death ceremonies, has been made. Sanskaras, which originated in the Vedas, have been orally transmitted from teacher (Guru) to pupil from generation to generation. The Introduction outlines the role of Sanskaras in the life of
a Hindu and its link with the ancient Vedas. The oral features that facilitate memorisation and transmission of the Mantras are mentioned. The three universal anthropological laws of Marcel Jousse are applied. The first chapter focuses on the theoretical framework of orality where important terms are defined. The contribution of Marcel Jousse and Ong are highlighted. The orality-literacy continuum is elaborated upon. The important role of memory skills as a facilitator of the transmission of knowledge is explained. The second chapter deals with the origin and the classification of Vedic literature. The role of the Sacred Fire (Yajna) in
Sanskaras is emphasized. It is around this ritual fire that the ceremony and the oral traditions revolve. The fire is central to all the rites and ceremonies and the litanies constantly refer to the fire as the vehicle of transmitting the aspirations of the devotee to God. The third chapter states the reason for the choice of the topic and summarises each of the sixteen Vedic Sanskaras. This is followed by the identification of oral elements in the Naming ceremony. The evidence of orality in the marriage ceremony features in chapter four initially establishing the importance of the
marriage ceremony and thereafter outlining the essential steps of a Hindu marriage. The death ceremony is described in chapter five with special reference to evidence of oral style expression therein. The conclusion emphasizes the role of orality in keeping alive the Hindu tradition and customs. An investigation into the presence of gestural and oral expressions in the performance of the Yajna (sacred fire) : a Vedic viewpoint.Debipersad, Homawathee. January 1999 (has links)
This dissertation is accompanied by a video recording of the performance
of the yajna and an audio recording of the mantras (sacred verses) recited
during the performance. This thesis endeavors to illustrate how oral style elements are used to
accentuate the mantras during the performance of the yajna. The mantras
and the yajna itself, have its roots in the Vedic scriptures which have been
transmitted orally from generation to generation. In chapter one, "Introduction", a brief description of the concept of
Hinduism which forms the basis of my investigation is presented. An
individual's life, according to Hinduism, is divided into four stages and the performance of yajna features prominently in the sixteen Vedic
sanskaras. In chapter two, the term yajna is defined and the origin of yajna as
reflected in the Purusa Sukta is discussed. The five main daily duties or
Panca Mahayajna, presented for the welfare and progress of the
individual and society are explained. It must be noted that the Panca
Mahayajna are not necessarily all rituals or rites but rather social or
human commitments, which are a part of the Vedic code of ethics.
However, the Deva Yajna or Agni-hotra or yajna as it is very commonly
known to Hindus, is a ritual that is performed. The Devayajna forms an
integral part of the Panca Mahayajna. The third chapter outlines some of Marcel Jousse's thoughts, views and
ideas about oral style expressions relevant to the yajna. The universal
anthropological laws of Formulism, Bilateralism, Mimism and Rhythmism
as propounded by Marcel Jousse are highlighted. Key concepts like
gesture, memory, rhythm and oral expression, used as facilitators for the
transmission of knowledge are explained. this chapter forms part of the
conceptional framework of the study. Chapter four focusses on the definition of oral tradition The Vedas, an
example of Hindu literature reflecting oral tradition, are discussed. Some
interesting comments tracing the authenticity of the Vedas and facts
declaring the Vedas as the source head of all knowledge about human
behaviour also feature in this chapter. In the fifth chapter, the procedure, explanation and analysis of the gestural
and oral expressions as reflected in the performance of the yajna are
examined. The anthropological laws of Marcel Jousse are applied in the
recitation of the mantras and the actual performance of the yajna.
Mnemotechnical devices that facilitate memorisation, featuring in the
mantras are discussed. The conclusion emphasises the role of oral style elements that are evident
in the yajna and explores the possibility for further research in Vedic

Paul's argumentation on sexual issues in Corinth, specifically pertaining to 1 Corinthians 5-7Schaller, Markus 31 January 2005 (has links)
This study is devoted to Paul's rhetorical argumentation on sexual issues (`porneia') in Cor-inth, and focuses especially 1. Corinthians 5:1-7:9.
Paul uses `porneia' according to the Jewish tradition as body violation, pollution and as Satanic power. The term describes different forms of sexual behaviour which Paul rejects (like incest or intercourse with prostitutes at Roman banquets) and can be summarised as `illegiti-mate sexual intercourse'. For Paul, the only legitimate sexual intercourse is that within mar-riage (7:1-9). Therefore Paul's reference to the marriage is his answer to the problem of `por-neia', even if Paul sees many advantages in celibacy.
As a probable background which explains the occurrences of `porneia' in Corinth, we see next to sexual abstinence within existing marriages (7:1-7) the strong influence of a Roman élite, which based its behaviour on hedonistic slogans and on the mortality of the body. Ac-cordingly, Paul's argumentation emphasises the high significance of the human body (6:12-20) and ascribes an eschatological perspective to it with the references to the resurrection of the body in 1 Corinthians 6:14 and chapter 15. / New Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / (M. Sea monsters and other mythical creatures associated with the primeval flood in the Old Testament. A history of denial?Dyssel, Allan 02 1900 (has links)
Leviathan and the other sea-monsters in the Hebrew Bible have been a source of dissension amongst biblical scholars. Evidently, no consensus exists amongst them on how to translate the Hebrew words referring to these mythical monsters. Therefore,atendency developed amongst exegetes to
transfigure these mythical beasts into ordinary animals, to translate them in a vague and general way or to interpret them as mere symbols. This study, therefore, investigates ways in which the assumed existence of mythical creatures in the OT are denied, identified, or rejected. To gain a better understanding of the nature and function of these mythical creatures in the OT, similar creatures in the Ancient Near East (ANE) have been examined with a focus on sea-monsters and dragons associated with the primeval sea. These findings propose not only a more distinct epitome of Leviathan, but also of other monsters associated with the primeval waters asdepicted in the OT. These are Rahab, םנִּ ינִּ תַּ(tanninim), behemoth and the לוֹד֔ גגדָ(Jonah’s big fish). It was concluded that when these beasts are interpreted in the light of the magico-mythical cosmology of the ANE and the OT, they should be seen as mythical creatures, assumed to be real by the ancient audience of the biblical text. When striving for fidelity to and loyalty with regard to both the text and the current reader, any translation should, therefore, present the foreignness of these monsters or dragons to the contemporary reader. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D.
