Description and Application of Genetic Algorithm

WANG, MIN January 2012 (has links)
Genetic Algorithm (GA) as a class of Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural selection and natural genetics. This dissertation presents the description, solving procedures and application of GA. The definitions of selection, crossover and mutation operators are given in details and an application based on GA in Time Table Problem (TTP) is performed in a new way. Due to its high capability of overall search, GA is particularly appropriate for solving timetabling and scheduling problems. TTP (Time Table Problem) which belongs to NP-hard problem is a special problem concerning resource management. In this dissertation, a new chromosome coding is designed in order to solve TTP more effectively. And the result presented by MATLAB will converge to a steady condition.

Adiabatic dynamics of low-lying collective modes in the BEC-BCS crossover

Jiang, Minxi 28 September 2011 (has links)
As the hydrodynamic theory breaks down with the local density ap- proximation in the fermionic superfluid with spin-polarization, we develop a general formalism of the adiabatic dynamics for the low-lying collective modes in the BEC-BCS crossover, which is exact in the adiabatic limit. This adi- abatic dynamic theory is based on a static density functional theory of the spin-polarized superfluid system, which we derive as a generalization of the conventional density functional theory of superfluid for current experimental interests. A special case where the system is uniform and analytically solv- able is studied in detail. We show that our adiabatic equations of motion are reduced to the hydrodynamic equations of motion within local density approx- imation, which provides a solid microscopic foundation for the well-publicized phenomenological hydrodynamic theory. / text

Crossover of engagement and life satisfaction among dual-earner parents / E. Wessels

Wessels, Elette January 2009 (has links)
An individual has the ability to project feelings and emotions onto someone else, to the extent that the other person reacts to them, whether in a similar or opposite manner. These are known as crossover effects. Crossover research investigates the influential relationship and behavioural changes between partners. It sheds light on the occurrence of similar reactions that develop across work and home domains because of interpersonal relations between partners. However, previous crossover research primarily focused on negative symptoms, disregarding the positive. This one-sided approach caused a disparity in crossover research, because one can only gain a holistic understanding of the significance and effects of working if research is extended to include positive aspects. The general objective of this study was to test a structural model of job resources, work engagement and life satisfaction, and to determine the crossover effects of work engagement and life satisfaction among dual-earner parents in South Africa. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A convenience sample of 125 couples (N = 250) was taken in the North West and Gauteng Provinces. A job resources questionnaire, the 'Utrecht Work Engagement Scale' (UWES) and the 'Satisfaction with Life Scale' (SWLS) were administered. Cronbach alpha coefficients, Pearson product-moment correlations, and structural equation modelling were used to analyse the data. Results indicated positive relationships between job resources (autonomy, support and development), work engagement and life satisfaction for both partners. Job resources explained variances of 62% for males and 72% for females in work engagement. A variance of 12% with regard to life satisfaction of males was explained by their work engagement, whilst a combination of female work engagement and their spouse's life satisfaction explained 10% of the variance in female life satisfaction. Unfortunately, expectations about crossover effects of work engagement between partners were not met. The final structural model only confirmed a crossover effect of life satisfaction between partners from male to female. Recommendations were made for the organisation and for future research. / Thesis (M.Com. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.

Musik För Fyra - Examensarbete Mauritz Agnas

Agnas, Mauritz January 2018 (has links)
I wanted to challenge myself and write music for an unusual constellation of instruments. I wrote music that had inspiration from different genres like jazz, baroque, folk music and classical music. The instruments I wrote for were cello, recorder, harpsichord and double bass. The instrument basson participates in one of the pieces. In my work I will explore different forms when it comes to composition and ensemble play. I will investigate different approaches and methods with the ensemble. Methods that leave a lot of space for the musician's interpretation of the pieces. Together we shape the music into something that we think is interesting. During this project, I learned a lot about the instruments cello, recorder, harpsichord and double bass and how they work together. The project resulted in a concert at KMH.

Chahal, Harpreet S, Gelaye, Bizu, Mostofsky, Elizabeth, Sanchez, Sixto E, Mittleman, Murray A, Maclure, Malcolm, Pacora, Percy, Torres, Jose A, Romero, Roberto, Ananth, Cande V, Williams, Michelle A 01 October 2018 (has links)
El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / While there is consistent evidence that episodes of physical exertion are associated with an immediately higher risk of acute ischemic vascular events, the risk of placental abruption immediately following episodes of physical exertion has not been studied. In a multicenter case-crossover study, we interviewed 663 women with placental abruption at 7 Peruvian hospitals between January 2013 and August 2015. We asked women about physical exertion in the hour before symptom onset and compared this with their frequency of physical exertion over the prior week. Compared with times with light or no exertion, the risk of placental abruption was 7.8 (95% confidence interval (CI): 5.5, 11.0) times greater in the hour following moderate or heavy physical exertion. The instantaneous incidence rate ratio of placental abruption within an hour of moderate or heavy physical exertion was lower for women who habitually engaged in moderate or heavy physical activity more than 3 times per week in the year before pregnancy (rate ratio (RR) = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.6, 5.9) compared with more sedentary women (RR = 17.3, 95% CI: 11.3, 26.7; P for homogeneity < 0.001), and the rate ratio was higher among women with preeclampsia/eclampsia (RR = 13.6, 95% CI: 7.0, 26.2) than among women without (RR = 6.7, 95% CI: 4.4, 10.0; P for homogeneity = 0.07). / Revisión por pares / Revisión por pares

Investigation of natural genetic modifiers of meiotic crossover frequency in Arabidopsis thaliana

Griffin, Catherine Helen January 2017 (has links)
Meiotic recombination, known as crossover, is a vital mechanism for generating genetic diversity in sexually reproducing populations. Recombination events are non-uniform across the genome, due to a variety of influences including chromatin structure, DNA-sequence, epigenetic marks and interference from other recombination events. These known factors do not fully explain the distribution of recombination events, and additionally do not account for all the variability in recombination frequency observed both between and within species. Furthermore, of the mechanisms that have been identified, many are not yet fully understood. In Arabidopsis thaliana, considerable variation is observed in recombination frequency and distribution between natural accessions. By investigating recombination events in A.thaliana, this project aimed to identify trans-acting modifiers of recombination frequency that varied between natural accessions. Identification of meiotic recombination modifiers was performed through Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mapping in A.thaliana natural-accession cross populations. Populations were generated from crosses between two accessions which differed significantly for recombination frequency as measured across a defined region of the genome flanked by a fluorescent-reporter system. F1 plants were then self-fertilised to produce segregating mosaic F2 populations for mapping. Recombination frequency for specific genomic intervals was determined for each individual in the population through measurement of the segregation of flanking fluorescence-genes expressed in the products of meiosis - seeds or pollen. Individuals were also genotyped using accession-specific markers across the genome, at a marker density of one marker per 2-5Mb, depending on the chromosome. Association of variation in recombination frequency with specific sections of the genome differing between the parental accessions through QTL mapping revealed significant modifiers of meiotic recombination segregating within the populations. This resulted in the identification of three significant large-effect modifiers that differed between Col-0 and Cvi-0 accessions, on chromosomes 1 ,2 and 5, affecting recombination in an interval in the sub-telomere region of chromosome 3. An additional modifier on chromosome 4 affecting the same sub-telomeric interval was identified that differed between the Col-0 and Can-0 accessions. Further fine-mapping of modifiers to improve location resolution was performed by repeated backcrosses into the Col-0 genetic background to remove the influence of other large-effect QTL and possible unknown small-effect modifiers. Improving the resolution provided a number of potential candidates for genes underlying the recombination phenotype for each QTL. Candidate testing was then performed, either through transformation of different accession alleles into the fluorescent-reporter system, or through analysis of T-DNA insertion lines that interrupted candidate genes. Preliminary results from T-DNA insertion mutants crossed to the fluorescent-reporter system suggest a potential role for the AT2G31510 gene in modification of meiotic recombination frequency, though the mode of action remains unknown. These results demonstrate the presence of large-effect modifiers of meiotic recombination frequency that vary between the natural A.thaliana accessions Col-0, Cvi-0 and Can-0. Confirmation of underlying genes or sequence elements and characterisation of their mechanism of action are opportunities for exploration in future experiments.

Marvel uses the crossover, characteristic element of the complex narrative, in it’s transmidia universe and articulates it’s characters in wide narratives arcs. To reach a larger number of consumers, the Marvel Cinematographic Universe (MCU) consists of movies, television and Netflix series and webisodes. In this sense, the overall objective of the study is to observe how the Marvel brand expands its fictional universe through the Netflix series and the use of crossover elements. The following research question was then established: how does the articulation of the crossover elements consolidate and expand the Marvel Universe? The study was initiated by the authors Andrea Semprini, Henry Jenkins, Carlos Scolari and Jason Mittel. The "Daredevil", "Jessica Jones", "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist" series were determined as the research object and as a research methodology the case study of Robert K. Yin. In order to structure the work and analyze the chosen objects, the concepts of "causality, time and space" developed by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson were used. For the better assimilation of the results, the concepts of the authors were adapted in the categories "character, action and space", which made possible the establishment of the "crossover element." Sixty-five episodes were deconstructed, each containing one of the series analyzed, 13 (thirteen) episodes. To examine the crossover in the series, we started with the definition "character crossover" pointed out in the studies of Guerrero-Pico and Scolari.Throughout the analysis, it was possible to establish different types of crossovers, in addition to the already established "character crossover". Thus, in order to distinguish them, were added to the study three more categories: space crossover, action crossover and object crossover. The classical and created categories, described above, were subdivided into internal crossover elements, that is, found within the four series realized for Netflix; external crossovers elements, referring to the works of the Marvel Cinematographic Universe for cinema, television, short film and webisodes; and internal and external crossover elements, which encompass both the Netflix series and the works of the Marvel Cinematographic Universe. At the end of the study, the crossover matrix category was added to classify the crossover elements of greater relevance in the narrative, that is, that appear three or more times within the same analyzed episode. As a result of the deconstruction of the 65 (sixty-five) episodes, we found 215 (two hundred and fifteen) crossover elements, sum of the crossover and crossover matrices found in the five series analyzed. It is considered that these elements, pointed out in the deconstruction of the productions, integrate characters, spaces and actions of different narratives and provide immersion, drill, within the Marvel Cinematographic Universe. In this way, the consumer of Marvel products for Netflix is able to detect the areas of intersection and magnify, in an exponential way, the understanding of the fictional universe. With everything, Marvel becomes an example of convergence between narratives when daring and making use of technology and audiovisual strategies in their favor. This position of the company not only engage loyalty and captive public, but also launches the brand as a marketing power in the entertainment business.
