Electric amateurs : literary encounters with computing technologies 1987-2001

This thesis considers the portrayal of uncertain or amateur encounters with new technologies in the late twentieth century. Focusing on fictional responses to the incipient technological and cultural changes wrought by the rise of the personal computer, I demonstrate how authors during this period drew on experiences of empowerment and uncertainty to convey the impact of a period of intense technological transition. From the increasing availability of word processing software in the 1980s to the exponential popularity of the “World Wide Web”, I explore how perceptions of an “information revolution” tended to emphasise the increasing speed, ease and expansiveness of global communications, while more doubtful commentators expressed anxieties about the pace and effects of technological change. Critical approaches to the cultural impact of computing technologies have tended to overlook the role played by perceptions of expertise and familiarity, and my thesis seeks to redress this by identifying a broad range of imagery, language and cultural references used to depict amateur or inexpert encounters with computing technologies. My interest in literary representations of amateur or marginalised users of computing technology reveals how the ease and speed of reading and writing promised by technological expertise can be countered by uncertainty arising from limited understanding of the complex processes involved. In a pre-smartphone age, the computer loomed as an object which was simultaneously baffling and enchanting, filled with potential but also obscure in its fundamental workings. Examining instances within experimental literary fiction and poetry which portray, imply, or respond to, encounters with personal computing, I demonstrate how individuals’ attempts to understand a technologically-inflected world can be described and enacted by the use of unusual narrative and poetic devices, where experimental literary strategies work to recreate the complex sensations associated with thrilling, difficult, or incomprehensible aspects of information technologies.

Modelling and forecasting cultural and environmental changes

Much of the discourse on cultural change has been descriptive and explanatory, with few attempts to be predictive. Where indicators of and buffers to change are identified, they tend only to be post-event assessable. The need for a tool with strong predictive power is fundamental to cultural (and environmental) impact assessment and the rationale behind this developmental work. Focusing on traditional cultures and their environmental context, and based on a case study of the Juatinga Ecological Reserve, Brasil, this research advances knowledge on modelling cultural and environmental changes, and how to manage these changes for accepted goals. A heuristic tool is presented for assessing the impacts of pressures on a culture and its related environment as well as the efficacy of management responses. This tool is associated with methods to assist in developing predictive models representing the change processes. The change model building process involves consulting stakeholders as a way of integrating different perceptions, to identify pressures, responses and links associated with cultural and environmental change. This assists in creating a co-learning environment, which facilitates communication between stakeholders. The change modelling approach permits incorporation of the complexity and uncertainty of the system represented, and enables scenario analyses. These allow expected local and flow-on impacts of management interventions to be tested. This approach is more efficient than stand-alone performance indicators that do not allow for the synergic impacts of management interventions to be observed and assessed. Using the models representing the cultural and environmental change processes of the Caiçaras of the Juatinga Ecological Reserve, this research identifies that tourism is a major pressure for change (at that locality). This study also identified that tourist numbers at new and small tourism destinations, as well as on a continental scale, can be forecast using exponential and polynomial functions. Yet, tourism flow may be perturbed at any given time by, for example, acts of violence and when the type of marketing changes. In addition, tourist numbers cannot be greater than the total population, therefore it cannot grow indefinitely as exponential and polynomial functions suggest. Hence, the use of exponential and polynomial functions to forecast tourist numbers is more reliable for short periods, such as four or five years, and when based on six or more sets of data points. The greatest contribution of this research to the cultural change discourse is its innovative approach to study, forecast and manage cultural and environmental changes. The continuation of this research may lead to identifying general theories relating pressures and responses to indicators of cultural and environmental changes.

Generational differences and cultural change

Young people are arguably facing complex life situations in their transition into adulthood and navigating their life trajectories in a highly individualised way. For youth in post-compulsory education, their training years have been extended, their years of dependency have increased and they have greater individual choice compared to previous youth generations. This study develops an understanding of the process of individualisation applied to youth in late modernity and explores it in relation to the neo-liberal climate. It compares the life situation of this youth generation with youth in the early 1960s, brought up with more predefined traditional conditions, cemented in traditional social structures. The processes that led to generational changes in the experiences of youth in the last forty-five years are examined, linked to structural transformations that influence subjective experiences. Specifically, the shifts of the conditions of youth in post-compulsory education are studied in relations to socio-economic, technological and cultural changes. This study discusses the Western Anglo-American model of changes in youths life experiences and examines how it (mis)fits in a more conservative Catholic Mediterranean setting. The research investigates conditions in Malta, an ex-colonial small island Mediterranean state, whose peculiarities include its delayed economic development compared to the Western setting. The core of the research comprises of primary data collection using in-depth, ethnographical interviews, with two generations of youth in different socio-historical context; those who experienced their youth in the early 1960s and youth in the late 2000s. This study concludes that the concept of individualisation does indeed illuminate the experiences of youth in late modernity especially when compared to the experiences of youth forty-five years ago. However the concept of individualisation is applied in a glocalised manner in line with the peculiarities of Malta that has lagged behind mainstream developments in Western Europe and still retained traditional features. Building on the individualisation concept, I use an empirically grounded concept of compromised choices to describe the increase in the bargaining of choice happening at different fronts in the life experiences of youth, especially in the life biography of women, choices in education and the job market and choices in consumption.

[pt] Esta dissertação tem por objetivo compreender o processo de gerenciamento cultural de uma organização que mudou sua natureza jurídica, analisando seu impacto na estratégia e no desempenho organizacional. Para atingir este objetivo foi realizada uma pesquisa exploratória, explicativa e descritiva através do estudo de caso da Embraer - Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica, que após a sua privatização em 1994 obteve significativa mudança em seu desempenho. Com base em uma análise qualitativa, este trabalho comparou algumas tipologias culturais identificadas na literatura,com dados primários e secundários levantados através de pesquisa documental e entrevistas estruturadas. O resultado deste estudo reforça a literatura existente que indica forte correlação entre cultura, estratégia e desempenho,evidenciando a importância de algumas variáveis como: processo de comunicação, estrutura de poder, processo decisório, dentre outros, no gerenciamento da mudança organizacional. / [en] This essay focuses on understanding the culture of an organization that has been through a changing process. It analyses the impact of this culture in the organizational performance. To reach this goal a thorough research was conducted involving a case study. Embraer, Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica, went through a privatization process and it was used as the focus of this study. The research was based on a bibliographical survey to build a theoretical chart about the relevant topics of the study. Furthermore, documental research and interviews helped on the survey of the current situation and also helped on the understanding of the dimensions that were most affected in the changing process. This data was surveyed in a qualitative way. The conclusion of this study shows the importance of the culture management in order to achieve new corporate goals, showing the most important variables in the process, as well as the way to align them to the new strategies in order to improve performance.

[pt] A presente dissertação tem como propósito analisar o gerenciamento cultural e o impacto no desempenho organizacional de uma organização de 145 anos, com 68 mil funcionários, que representa o maior agente financeiro do Brasil de fomento ao desenvolvimento urbano, nos segmentos de habitação, saneamento e infra-estrutura, na administração de fundos, e em programas e serviços de caráter social. A posição da empresa no mercado nacional e principalmente sua trajetória, passando por uma crise de confiança e resultados, com motivos internos e externos, até a recuperação recente de seus resultados associada ao ambiente do mercado financeiro, vem apresentando constantes alterações, principalmente devido às mudanças no cenário econômico que foi responsável pela significativa mudança organizacional. Neste estudo foi feita uma análise qualitativa de questionários semi-estruturados,discursos presidenciais,e entrevistas individuais, segundo tipologias culturais e modelos propostos por Chow et al. e Gordon. Conclui-se que a organização passou a ter um planejamento estratégico mais voltado para o mercado e seus clientes, reforçando a premissa de que existe uma forte correlação entre cultura, estratégia e desempenho, e evidenciando a importância de algumas variáveis como: processo de comunicação, estrutura de poder e processo decisório no gerenciamento da mudança organizacional. / [en] This dissertation has as objective to analyze the cultural management and the impact on the organizational performance of a 145 year old organization, which with 68.000 employees represents the largest Brazilian financial agent. This organization fosters the urban development in real state, sanitation, infrastructure, funds administration and in social programs and services. The position the company holds in the national market and mainly its history through liability crisis and its results with internal and external reasons until its recent result recovery is associated with the financial market environment. This position has been showing constant alterations mainly due to the financial setting changes that have been responsible for the significant organizational changes. In this study, a qualitative analysis has been done on semi-structured questionnaires, presidential speeches and individual interviews according to cultural and proposed models by Chow and Al Gordon. It has been concluded that the organization has adopted a strategic planning more focused on the market and on the clients emphasizing the idea that there is a strong correlation among culture, strategy and performance and making more evident the importance of some variables such as combination process, power structure and decision process and the management of the organizational changes.

Representations of men and women of the bush in Australian fiction

At the heart of this exegesis is the city-bush gap and the rivalry and stereotypes that gap has generated. I acknowledge how and why our national identity evolved from the writing of the 1890s but I argue that most current artists, particularly novelists, have failed to incorporate the ongoing cultural, societal and industrial changes that have occurred since, particularly in the last thirty years. I assert that the majority of artists still refer to and draw inspiration from established, inaccurate myths and stereotypes rather than the bush and Australian characters of today. Through examining three texts, Kate Grenville's The Idea of Perfection (Picador, Sydney, 1999), Christos Tsiolkas's Loaded (Random House, Sydney, 1995) and Silences Long Gone (Picador, Sydney, 1998) by Anson Cameron, I also point out how most artists in general have failed to keep pace with changes in the bush city cross-culture. My exegesis attempts to give an account of some deficiencies in contemporary Australian literature. In the creative component of this project, Summer at Mount Hope (Duffy and Snellgrove, Sydney, 2005), I write, as did Anson Cameron in his book, Silences Long Gone, (Pan Macmillan, 1998) of a bush (in 1894) where city and bush rely on each other and technology pushes into the bush uniting city and bush, thus enhancing the economy, the cross cultural interdependence and advancing the commonality between the two. I replace stereotypical characters with less predictable characters whose traits sit easily in either bush or city culture and skew the Traditionalist role of bush and city.

Srovnání změn v balučské kultuře v Turkmenistánu a na území historického Balúčistánu v závislosti na míře státních zásahů / The Impact of State on The Transformation of Balochi Culture in the Turkmenistan and the Historical Balochistan

The aims of the study are to explore and compare the Balochs' way of life as an ethnic minority in Turkmenistan and north-eastern Iran and as an indigenous population in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan since the early 20th century and to study cultural change in the Balochs in the context of state intervention. The ethnogensis of the Balochs as a nomadic Indo-Iranian ethnic group without their own state was shaped by many external and internal influences. The most fundamental are changes in the political organization of states which the Balochs experienced throughout history. Due to poor living conditions, disruption of their original way of life and the need to ensure land and pasture for cattle, some Balochs living in historic Sistan along what is now the Turkmen-Iranian border migrated to Turkmenistan and to north-eastern Iran in the early 20th century. This thesis compares the Balochs' current way of life and with that after their arrival in new territory and examines the cultural transformation of these two groups in the context of state intervention.
