A comparative analysis of Kenneth Frampton’s critical regionalism and William J. R. Curtis’s authentic regionalism as a means for evaluating two houses by Mexican Architect Luis Barragan

Orozco, Juan Carlos January 1900 (has links)
Master of Architecture / Department of Architecture / David R. Seamon / This thesis examines the notion of regional identity and connection to place as a means for developing countries to use their cultural heritage, traditional construction methods, and everyday life patterns to create a built environment appropriate for contemporary needs. Regional identity expressed through architectural form not only establishes a connection between people and the space they inhabit but also contributes to conserving the natural environment and strengthening people’s attachment to place. To support this claim, the thesis focuses on two design thinkers who have examined placemaking from a regional perspective: Architectural theorist Kenneth Frampton and his theory of critical regionalism (Frampton 1983, 1987); and architectural theorist William J.R. Curtis and his theory of authentic regionalism (1986). Using criteria derived from Frampton’s and Curtis’s theories, this thesis analyses two Mexico City houses designed by Mexican architect Luis Barragan: his home and studio, built in 1947; and the Eduardo Prieto Lopez house, built in 1950. Using contrasting criteria from Frampton and Curtis, I examine these two houses' relative success in evoking a sense of regional identity. I argue that my analysis of the two houses, first, offers possibilities for clarifying Curtis´s and Frampton’s understandings of good regional architecture; and second, indicates how local tradition might be adequately integrated with global modernity, while at the same time providing a unique sense of place.

The North American Indian Reframed: The Photography of Edward S. Curtis in Context with American Art and Visual Culture

Teemant, Marie Elizabeth, Teemant, Marie Elizabeth January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis and his primary photographic body of work, The North American Indian, within the context of the art and visual culture that informed and influenced Curtis in his image making process. Within the history of photography, an understanding of who Curtis was is complex. Depictions of Curtis have included various roles including photographer, businessman, philanthropist, artist, ethnologist, capitalist, and profiteer. Until the last twenty years, much of the scholarship surrounding Curtis was focused on his biography, without consideration to the similarities Curtis's work had to contemporary photographers or to American art depicting Native Americans prior to him. My research will examine this prior scholarship and focus on two different frameworks The North American Indian fits into in terms of how the Native subjects are depicted. The first framework is within the influential artwork of American painters and the Native American as incorporated into American art. I will compare Curtis's depiction of Native Americans to those by Benjamin West, Thomas Cole, and George Catlin. All three of these painters included Native Americans in their work at varying levels and for various purposes. While Curtis was working in a different medium, the ways in which he framed and posed his subjects exhibits his awareness in continuing the expected Native American image. The second framework considers The American Indian and its parallels to missionary albums (used to promote missionary work among non-Christian people) as well as a Carlisle School yearbook (used to promote the school's mission in educating and acclimating its students from tribes across the country). In addition to the three types of objects being created in the first two decades of the twentieth century, they also share a relationship through the use of photographs and words to convey a meaning the images alone could not accomplish. Native Americans have been used to symbolize the American continent since the first Europeans laid claim to the land. Curtis is only one of many artists who turned their attention to native subjects and attempted to create an understanding of who they were. A more nuanced understanding of Curtis and his work surfaces through acknowledging the ways in which The North American Indian functions similarly to other works depicting Native Americans.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2004 - Cristiane Magela Floriano.pdf: 765031 bytes, checksum: a9dc1e79d63d53940ee5a888798748c5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2004-02-20 / Brazil has been highlighted as a major producer of fruits, especially tropical and subtropical. The passion fruit belongs to the family PASSIFLORACEAE and order PASSIFLORALES. The gender PASSIFLORAS is composed of at least 400 species, all originated from Tropical America and belongs to the sub-gender GRANADILLA, Quadrangles serie. The PASSIFLORA ALATA CURTIS is a native species and fairly widespread occurrence in Brazil where it is also commonly known by passion sweetfruit among other names. In Brazil, the species is found from the State Bahia all the way to the State of Rio Grande do Sul, showing good adaptation to the conditions EDAFOCLIM?TICAS. Considering the market potential, special attention should be given in post-harvest of passion sweet-fruit. This task aims to evaluate the behavior post-harvest of the passion sweet-fruit (PASSIFLORA ALATA CURTIS) submitted to the application of different doses of radiation gamma aimed at increasing the conservation period, with maintenance of quality and health. This work was developed in post-harvest in the laboratory of the Department of FITOTECCNIA - Institute of Agriculture UFRRJ with fruits collected at the Site of Passion sweet-fruit, in the municipality of Paty do Alferes. After being selected, they were transported to the Office of Research and Development to be irradiated. The fruits received the following treatments: Irradiation with source of C?sio 137 (137Cs) at doses of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 kGy. After treatment, all fruits were stored at a temperature of 12 C and 90% UR. Assessments were made every 4 days through determinations of appearance, loss of fresh weight, firmness equatorial and apical, soluble solids, pH, total titratable acidity, ascorbic acid and longevity of the fruits. All fruits, regardless of the dose of gamma radiation that were submitted showed changes in appearance during the period of storage and tended to loss both firmness as well firmness apical and equatorial. There was a small variation in levels of soluble solids, and the process of irradiation led the fruits of sweet passion fruit to no traditional behavior, not only showing a trend of accumulation or reduction of soluble solids total. It follows that the lower doses favored to increase the conservation period with maintaining the health and quality of the fruits of fresh passion fruit during the 28 days of storage fruits. No Brasil, a esp?cie ? encontrada da Bahia at? o Rio Grande do Sul, apresentando boa adapta??o ?s condi??es edafoclim?ticas.

Balancované a téměř balancované prezentace grup z algoritmického pohledu / Balanced and almost balanced group presentations from algorithmic viewpoint

Skotnica, Michael January 2018 (has links)
In this thesis we study algorithmic aspects of balanced group presentations which are finite presentations with the same number of generators and relations. The main motivation is that the decidability of some problems, such as the triviality problem, is open for balanced presentations. First, we summarize known results on decision problems for general finite presen- tations and we show two group properties which are undecidable even for balanced presentations - the property of "being a free group"' and the property of "having a finite presentation with 12 generators". We also show reductions of some graph problems to the triviality problem for group presentations, such as determining whether a graph is connected, k-connected or connected including an odd cycle. Then we show a reduction of the determining whether a graph with the same number of vertices and edges is a cycle to the triviality problem for balanced presentations. On the other hand, there is also a limitation of reduction to balanced presentations. We prove that there is no balanced presentation with two generators a, b|ap(m) bq(m) , ar(m) bs(m) for p(m), q(m), r(m), s(m) ∈ Z[m] which describes the trivial group if and only if m is odd. In the last part of this thesis, we describe a relation between group presentations and topology. In addition,...
