Relational Effects of Data Networks: How Strategically Aligned Data Networks Impact Digital Transformation

Toussaint, Michael, 0000-0001-7890-4294 January 2020 (has links)
Digital Transformation (DX) has become a pervasive global phenomenon that is having a profound effect at all levels of an enterprise. The umbrella term DX is supported by nascent technologies such as blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud-based computing and networking. The speed by which these new DX technologies have emerged has challenged current technical infrastructures, budgets, and skillsets as organizations attempt to incorporate and implement these technologies as part of pervasive digital operational initiatives. DX also includes the transformative effects (deployment and adoption) of these technologies, and these are referred to as “outcomes” in this thesis. Not surprisingly, recent studies indicate that at least seventy percent of DX projects either fail or underperform. As firms assess existing technology-to-business alignments in search of attributable causation, they discover that these alignments are often opaque regarding the capabilities required to obtain optimal digital transformation outcomes from the application of specific technologies. This is especially true as underlying technology infrastructures and architectures, which have had a traditionally functional role such as the data network, are increasingly relied upon to support the strategic outcome requirements of DX. This dissertation uses an inductive, multiple case study approach to explore these relationships and outcomes. It directly observes a set of large organizations across multiple verticals. These organizations have all completed pervasive digital transformation initiatives, more specifically, this study measured the resultant levels of digital transformation project outcomes achieved as a fraction of the initial digital transformation project deliverables. Furthermore, the study makes inferences regarding the relationship of the data network deployment posture to the observed digital project outcomes. To study this empirically, data network alignment is classified as either being functionally or strategically aligned. Analysis of the resultant data revealed four distinct themes: (a) organizations that procured data network equipment with pricing as the critical determinant experienced sub-par digital transformation outcomes; (b) organizations which considered key business drivers when procuring and architecting the data network achieved more successful digital transformation outcomes; (c) organizations which did not perform a network upgrade or perform a significant data network architectural change during the previous five years did not meet their own goals of digital transformation, and (d) some DX technology deployments achieved a high percentage of project deliverables without undertaking a data network upgrade. With respect to the fourth theme, however, the resulting low internal adoption of deployed DX technology among targeted operational units resulted in a ‘split-brain’ operation and thus an overall underperformance of the DX project. The final thesis chapter includes recommendations for future qualitative research on both digital transformation outcomes and the effect of managed network services on digital transformation outcomes as well as the need for quantitative research to establish deeper causation beyond the loose causation which is posited in this paper. / Business Administration/Management Information Systems

An IF Sampling Digital Receiver Implementation for Space-based Command and Telemetry Applications

Maples, Bruce W., Fix, Keith A. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / This paper describes an approach to the implementation of an IF sampling digital receiver for low data rate command and telemetry applications in the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network (STDN) and Air Force Space-Ground Link System (SGLS). The digital design is targeted for an FPGA-based implementation and was written entirely in VHDL. Several size and clock reduction techniques are described which were utilized due to limited gate-array resources and power. The system-level design architecture is described followed by a discussion of algorithms and performance of critical stages in the receiver chain. Bit error performance of the prototype receiver is also presented. Finally, although this design is specifically targeted for a narrowband command and telemetry application, the methodology forms the basis of a configurable receiver for higher data rate applications.

Efficient naming for Smart Home devices in Information Centric Networks

Rossland Lindvall, Caspar, Söderberg, Mikael January 2020 (has links)
The current network trends point towards a significant discrepancy between the data usage and the underlying architecture; a severely increasing amount of data is being sent from more devices while data usage is becoming more data-centric instead of the previously host-centric. Information Centric Network (ICN) is a new alternative network paradigm that is designed for a data-centric usage. ICN is based on uniquely naming data packages and making it location independent. This thesis researched how to implement an efficient naming for ICN in a Smart Home Scenario. The results are based on testing how the forwarding information base is populated for numerous different scenarios and how a node's duty cycle affects its power usage. The results indicate that a hierarchical naming is optimized for hierarchical-like network topology and a flat naming for interconnected network topologies. An optimized duty cycle is strongly dependent on the specific network and accordingto the results can a sub-optimal duty cycle lead to excessive powerusage.

Nowadays individuals are embedded in the communication society, which is characterized by the enormous flow of information made available and transmitted worldwide, without temporal or territorial barriers. The development of the Internet has fostered the formation of broader and more accessible data networks. In this context, the use of old data from an individual’s past is not unusual, a past which is often overcome. The aim of this paper encompasses an institute capable of protecting the human person and their free development in today's society, namely, the right to be forgotten. The question to be posed is whether this data network can store information over an indefinite period of time and whether that data can be republished at any time. This right is aimed at preventing the disclosure of past information that concerns a person's private affairs, in the presence of certain criteria. The purpose of this work is to investigate how the right to be forgotten has been regulated in Brazil. Therefore, it will be analyzed according to the present Brazilian legal grounds for its protection. Then it will be conceptualized based on the country’s doctrine and jurisprudence. The commonly used criteria to provide its enforcement will also be analyzed, as well as others that may be used to justify its enforcement in specific cases. Setting criteria is extremely relevant to allow a fair and balanced enforcement of this right, without harm to freedom of expression or national memory.

Analyse de sécurité et QoS dans les réseaux à contraintes temporelles / Analysis of security and QoS in networks with time constraints

Mostafa, Mahmoud 10 November 2011 (has links)
QoS and security are two precious objectives for network systems to attain, especially for critical networks with temporal constraints. Unfortunately, they often conflict; while QoS tries to minimize the processing delay, strong security protection requires more processing time and causes traffic delay and QoS degradation. Moreover, real-time systems, QoS and security have often been studied separately and by different communities. In the context of the avionic data network various domains and heterogeneous applications with different levels of criticality cooperate for the mutual exchange of information, often through gateways. It is clear that this information has different levels of sensitivity in terms of security and QoS constraints. Given this context, the major goal of this thesis is then to increase the robustness of the next generation e-enabled avionic data network with respect to security threats and ruptures in traffic characteristics. From this perspective, we surveyed the literature to establish state of the art network security, QoS and applications with time constraints. Then, we studied the next generation e-enabled avionic data network. This allowed us to draw a map of the field, and to understand security threats. Based on this study we identified both security and QoS requirements of the next generation e-enabled avionic data network. In order to satisfy these requirements we proposed the architecture of QoS capable integrated security gateway to protect the next generation e-enabled avionic data network and ensure the availability of critical traffic. To provide for a true integration between the different gateway components we built an integrated session table to store all the needed session information and to speed up the packet processing (firewall stateful inspection, NAT mapping, QoS classification and routing). This necessitates the study of the existing session table structure and the proposition of a new structure to fulfill our objective. Also, we present the necessary processing algorithms to access the new integrated session table. In IPSec VPN component we identified the problem that IPSec ESP encrypted traffic cannot be classified appropriately by QoS edge routers. To overcome this problem, we developed a Q-ESP protocol which allows the classifications of encrypted traffic and combines the security services provided by IPSec ESP and AH. To manage the network traffic wisely, a variety of bandwidth management techniques have been developed. To assess their performance and identify which bandwidth management technique is the most suitable given our context we performed a delay-based comparison using experimental tests. In the final stage, we benchmarked our implemented security gateway against three commercially available software gateways. The goal of this benchmark test is to evaluate performance and identify problems for future research work. This dissertation is divided into two parts: in French and in English respectively. Both parts follow the same structure where the first is an extended summary of the second.

Techno-economic analysis of IPTV services introduction by telecommunications service providers.

Zapater, Marcio Nieblas 13 July 2007 (has links)
The evolution towards integrated service offerings that combine voice, video and data is a key trend for telecommunications service providers. IP-based technology plays an important role on this scenario by enabling the delivery of video over a multiservice IP network, a service commonly known as Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). There are many challenges to a large scale roll out of IPTV services, though. When compared to traditional voice and data services, video services introduce a higher level of complexity to the service providers\' environment. The technology issues related to IPTV range from the upgrade of the existing networks and systems to the deployment of new technology platforms oriented to video services delivery, which are not common in a service provider\'s technology architecture. Within this context, the techno-economic analysis methodology presented in this work aims to support the decision process underlying the IPTV services launch by a telecommunications service provider. The proposed methodology leads to the identification of economic feasibility conditions associated to relevant services aspects and required technology infrastructure alternatives. The methodology encompasses the main following activities: services definition; services\' requirements identification; analysis of the existing technology architecture; design and dimensioning of the new technology infrastructure that will support the services; economic analysis; sensitivity and scenario analysis. Besides the methodology proposition, this work includes a case study illustrating its application to a fictional service provider.
