An empirical investigation of Middle East conflict management stylesAl-Sabah, Fahd January 2015 (has links)
This study investigates preferred conflict management styles in order to explore how conflict is dealt with in a particular cultural/geographical context (i.e. the Middle East), as culture is one of the factors, which affects management style, whether in a conflict situation or any other situations. Upon researching the literature in the area of conflict management styles in the Middle East it has been found that there is no published research for the region and specifically on the cultural issues. Therefore, this research study has taken a step forward in exploring how and in what ways, the conflict management styles of those individuals (e.g. employees) in Kuwait (a culture/context within the Middle East) may or may not be similar or different to those described in studies carried out in other cultures/contexts. The research explores the different conflict management styles used in Kuwait, which is approached by simulating the application of different conflict situations in Kuwaiti business context and explores the negotiation and application of conflict management styles applied. The use of the Thomas Kilmann Conflict mode Instrument (TKI) to gather research data helped in understanding the different conflict management styles used. The TKI is an extensively validated instrument used in the field to highlight the different ways of how people handle disputes and its effects on the dynamics of individuals and teams. This study attempts to make its contribution to knowledge in the field of conflict management styles in that (a) it assesses Kuwaiti conflict management styles, and (b) It studies the effects of the process of the different conflict management styles and its outcomes in resolving these conflicts in the Kuwaiti Business culture.

New methods for mode jumping in Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithmsIbrahim, Adriana Irawati Nur January 2009 (has links)
Standard Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling methods can experience problem sampling from multi-modal distributions. A variety of sampling methods have been introduced to overcome this problem. The mode jumping method of Tjelmeland & Hegstad (2001) tries to find a mode and propose a value from that mode in each mode jumping attempt. This approach is inefficient in that the work needed to find each mode and model the distribution in a neighbourhood of the mode is carried out repeatedly during the sampling process. We shall propose a new mode jumping approach which retains features of the Tjelmeland & Hegstad (2001) method but differs in that it finds the modes in an initial search, then uses this information to jump between modes effectively in the sampling run. Although this approach does not allow a second chance to find modes in the sampling run, we can show that the overall probability of missing a mode in our approach is still low. We apply our methods to sample from distributions which have continuous variables, discrete variables, a mixture of discrete and continuous variables and variable dimension. We show that our methods work well in each case and in general, are better than the MCMC sampling methods commonly used in these cases and also, are better than the Tjelmeland & Hegstad (2001) method in particular.

Ownership mode, cultural distance, and the extent of parent firms strategic control over subsidiaries in the PRCPuck, Jonas, Hödl, Markus K., Filatotchev, Igor, Wolff, Hans-Georg, Bader, Benjamin 25 May 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Previous studies often associated a specific type of ownership mode
with the extent of control a parent firm may have over (strategic) decision-making
in a foreign subsidiary, suggesting that parent firms should have higher control
over wholly-owned subsidiaries (WoS) than international joint ventures (IJVs).
Building on principal agent theory, we argue that in the Chinese context higher
ownership levels do not necessarily have a positive effect on the extent of control
over the foreign subsidiary. We further argue that cultural distance between the
parent firm and the subsidiary moderates this relationship. We test our hypotheses
using data from a sample of 156 foreign subsidiaries in the People's Republic of
China (PRC) and find strong support for our arguments. Our findings show that in
WoS parent firms reduce their extent of control, while in IJVs parent firms
increase their extent of control. Moreover, we find that extent of control over
WoS (IJVs) declines (increases) when cultural distance increases. Our results have
significant theoretical implications for international business (IB) research as they
challenge existing views with regard to the relationship between ownership mode
and control as well as the moderating effect of cultural distance.

Oetablerade designersefterfrågar därför en tjänst som hjälper dem med arbetet som tillkommer runt designprocessen.Marknadsföring och försäljning av deras alster anser de vara en av de svårastebitarna att själva kunna hantera.il NuovoiiiKlädkedjorna dominerar modemarknaden, men trenden går mot ett allt mer personligtmode, vilket gör att vi anser att det finns en lucka på marknaden. Därför syftar uppsatstill att undersöka om det finns en potential att starta upp en butik i Göteborg, som säljeroetablerade designers alster som bidrar till originalitet och mångfald inom modeindustrin.Den affärsidé vi har utformat grundar sig därför på att vi som ett detaljistföretagska tillhandahålla design från oetablerade designers och förmedla den till konsument. Vivill på det sättet ta vara på all den talang som finns hos Sveriges modedesignsskolor. Dåvi anser att det finns en allt för dålig koppling och integration mellan näringslivet ochden akademiska världen.I empirin har vi använt oss av kvalitativa intervjuer med modedesignstudenter på Textilhögskolan(THS) i Borås, för att skapa en bild av hur de uppfattar sin nuvarande situationoch framtid. Det här för att vi ska kunna utveckla vår affärsidé i linje med derasönskemål. Vidare har vi genomfört telefonintervjuer för att skapa oss en bild av fastighetsmarknadeni centrala Göteborg. Vi har även använt oss av en kvantitativ metod ioch med en marknadsundersökning som vi genomfört i vårt valda område, i syfte atttesta vår potentiella målgrupp och om det finns ett intresse för vår idé.Resultatet av våra frågeställningar visar att både designers och konsumenter har en positivuppfattning om och visar ett intresse för vår affärsidé. Konsumenterna upplever attdet saknas unika plagg på marknaden och kan tänka sig att handla alster från oetableradedesigners. Vidare anser modedesignstudenterna att det saknas en distributionskanal,som kan sälja deras designade kreationer och som har en förståelse för hur de vill verkaoch bli exponerade på modemarknaden. / Program: Butikschefsutbildningen

Performance evaluation using multiple controllers with different flow setup modes in the software defined network architectureEl-Geder, Suad January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis, a scheme of using multiple controllers which handle multiple network devices has been proposed, while using OpenFlow controllers in the proactive operations paradigm, and this in order to face the problem of using a single controller in the SDN model, including the lack of reliability and scalability on such a model. The main characteristic of this new approach are focused on the ability to design a dynamic and highly programmable network, moving the intelligence from the underlying systems to the network itself through a controller. To evaluate the proper effects of this new approach, different dynamic and programmable networks that could simulate real scenarios and measure their performance contrasting the obtained results with the pragmatic theory has been implemented. The SDN (Software-Defined Network) controller (Open Daylight), has been utilized, and thoroughly examined. Different sort of nets has been worked out through diverse Open Daylight functionalities, either implementing the intelligence of the controller (bundle), or going through it by an outside intelligent application (External Orchestrator), and eventually sending it through Open Daylight (by making Open Daylight work as an interpreter/translator from its language to OpenFlow or another protocol language). Summing up, the scheme that has been proposed in this research which is the multiple-proactive mode approach and the single proactive controller has scored no packet loss at all, in which implies the strength of reliability of this scheme, while the multiple reactive mode approach has a range of 1-8% packet loss ratio and the single reactive mode approach has a range of 1-25% packet loss ratio. Also, in case of delay the improvement which was obtained from our approach scored an average reduction of 13% comparing with other tested schemes. Thus, these new and interesting technologies show an astonishing capability to add more efficiency in different types of Networks.
