Search Term Selection and Document Clustering for Query Suggestion

Zhang, Xiaomin 06 1900 (has links)
In order to improve a user's query and help the user quickly satisfy his/her information need, most search engines provide query suggestions that are meant to be relevant alternatives to the user's query. This thesis builds on the query suggestion system and evaluation methodology described in Shen Jiang's Masters thesis (2008). Jiang's system constructs query suggestions by searching for lexical aliases of web documents and then applying query search to the lexical aliases. A lexical alias for a web document is a list of terms that return the web document in a top-ranked position. Query search is a search process that finds useful combinations of search terms. The main focus of this thesis is to supply alternatives for the components of Jiang's system. We suggest three term scoring mechanisms and generalize Jiang's lexical alias search to be a general search for terms that are useful for constructing good query suggestions. We also replace Jiang's top-down query search by a bottom-up beam search method. We experimentally show that our query suggestion method improves Jiang's system by 30% for short queries and 90% for long queries using Jiang's evaluation method. In addition, we add new evidence supporting Jiang's conclusion that terms in the user's initial query terms are important to include in the query suggestions. In addition, we explore the usefulness of document clustering in creating query suggestions. Our experimental results are the opposite of what we expected: query suggestion based on clustering does not perform nearly as well, in terms of the "coverage" scores we are using for evaluation, as our best method that is not based on document clustering.

Huang, Yu-Ting 07 September 2005 (has links)
The Criteria and Relative Suggestions of Elementary School Teachers in Selecting Chinese Textbooks Abstract The purpose of the research is to analyze teachers¡¦ opinions about the criteria and their suggestions for selecting the Chinese textbook. In order to achieve the research goal, the researcher¡A based on documentary analysis ¡A makes self-written materials about ¡§survey of teachers on criteria and suggestion of selecting the Chinese textbook in the elementary school.¡¨ The population of this survey was elementary school teachers in Kaohsiung area. 563 teachers were stratifiedly sampled from 48 elementary schools were the samples by using Stratified Sampling. Among Them 403 returning surveys were effecitve. The data analysis was conducted through the Descriptive statistics, T-test,and One-Way ANOVA. 1. According to the teachers¡¦ opinions on criteria of selecting the Chinese textbook, the order of importance is Teaching-Related Attributes, Physical-Related Attributes, Publication-Related Attributes, Outside-Related Attributes, and Context-Related Attributes of textbook. 2. In the Context-Related Attributes, teachers stressed on the correction of the content, and the capability of approaching the grade 1-9 curriculum competence indicators. 3. In Teaching-Related Attributes, teachers focused on the attraction of students' motivation and the instructional strategies of conforming the grade 1-9 curriculum competence indicators in the selecting book. 4. In Physical-Related Attributes, teachers emphasized the most on the size of typeface basing on the suitability of reading. 5. In Publication-Related Attributes, teachers emphasized the most on the continuance of the research which the publisher could make in linguistic field. 6. In Outside-Related Attributes, teachers stressed the most on the experience of using Chinese textbook and the educational philosophy in the textbook. 7. Female teachers paid more attention to Teaching-Related Attributes and Context-Related Attributes than the male teachers. 8. The teachers in large-scale schools paid more attention to Publication-Related Attributes of textbook than the teachers in other schools. 9. The elementary school teachers in remote districts paid more attention to all attributes of textbook than the teachers in cities and towns. 10. 62.8% of the elementary school teachers agreed that teachers are the major population who could make the choice of textbooks to use. 11. 97.9% of the elementary school teachers thought that teachers should be the faculties who could select textbooks to use, but they lacked consistency of thoughts that parents of the students also need to select textbooks. 12. Only a few elementary school teachers expressed that there were continual evaluations of textbook proceeding in their schools. Based upon the above conclusions, this research provides suggestions to and reference material for teachers, schools, publishers, educational administration and future research. Approaches toward a low carbon future for China: Scenario analysis about the provincial level plans

Xu, QIAOQIAO January 2013 (has links)
As the global warming brings more and more disasters, controlling greenhouse gas emission is one of the main global crucial issues nowadays. As one of the main emitters in the world, China faces more and more international pressure to reduce the emission, so it is urgent to make the transition to a low carbon economy. At the same time, China has been going through the fast urbanization process as shown in the “Northam Curve”, and the current urbanization mode requires the demand of the carbon-intensive consumption, and could lead to the massive carbon emission as well. However, it is contradictory to the long-time sustainable development in China. So, under the current condition, the reduction plan needs to be fit in the Chinese demand, so it is very crucial, and requires innovation and creation to analyze the reduction factor and find the balance point between the urbanization and low carbon development mode. Regarding to the different urbanization rate and economic development modes characters between the East, Central, West part of China, this thesis uses inductive and deductive method to study. Firstly, it chooses one province from each region to investigate. Then it integrated urbanization factor into Kaya equation to study different factors impacts on the carbon dioxide emission in the three sample provinces. It also selected the co-integration econometrics method to study the equilibrium relationship between the carbon dioxide emission and other main factors. Through analyzing the current reduction plan, it explains and forecasts the possible emission in 2015. The result suggests that the anticipated carbon dioxide emission might be able to achieve under the transition to a low carbon economy mode. Different regions should have their own feasible plans through controlling the urbanization rate, slowing the economic development rate and through reducing the energy intensity, improving the energy structure.

Suggesting Lozanov : suggestopedia and creative writing at a high school in Durban, South Africa.

Kusner, Charles. January 2007 (has links)
Suggestopedia (also sometimes referred to as "Accelerated Learning") is a teaching methodology that claims to remove barriers to learning rather than teach students how to learn. Developed by Bulgarian psychotherapist and medical doctor Georgi Lozanov (1926- ), it utilizes a detailed, three-phase cycle of teaching in which about 75% of teaching time is devoted to "Activations", games and activities in which students rehearse material previously presented in unique "Concert Sessions" (which make up the other 25% of contact time). Suggestopedia highlights factors often forgotten in the classroom: the design of an "optimum" learning environment, high expectations of success from the teacher, the use of music and art, the importance of enjoying the learning process, and the fostering of an atmosphere of "relaxed alertness". The method has been used with some success, particularly in the teaching of foreign languages. Ostensibly based on the way we learn naturally, Suggestopedia has developed a number of incarnations, in some cases because Lozanov's work was not freely available in the West during the Cold War. This dissertation outlines the salient features of both Suggestopedia and some of its incarnations. Additionally, it suggests ways in which the method may be utilized in the high school English classroom in South Africa. In particular, it describes an intervention in which elements of Suggestopedia were used to teach creative writing in a multilingual environment. In short, this intervention involved the creation of a traditional two page creative "essay" inspired by, inter alia, the teacher's high expectations, the meditative atmosphere created by music, and the posters in the students' peripheral vision. A total of 158 Grade 9 and Grade 11 (mainly isiZulu speaking) students in an "ex-model C" school wrote, edited, and submitted such essays, the main criterion of success being whether each essay was deemed by the teacher to be of a sufficiently high standard to be reproduced here. The project, based on a qualitative research design using the process approach to writing and a Suggestopedicbased pedagogy, elicited many engaging pieces of writing from students. The spirit of their writing as well as the writers' own comments about the process will hopefully suggest the genius and versatility of the Lozanov methodology. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2007.

Self-control of postoperative pain : effects of hypnosis and waking suggestion

Taenzer, Paul. January 1983 (has links)
The present study evaluates the efficacy of self-hypnosis and its components--relaxation instructions and waking analgesia suggestions--for pain reduction in patients recovering from gallbladder surgery. Forty elective surgery patients were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental pain control procedures or to a standard treatment control group--preoperative teaching. The treatments were found to be equally credible and generated equivalent expectancies for success. Pain was assessed using multiple subjective and objective measures sampled across the postoperative period. Multivariate analysis of these data indicated that the experimental treatments were no more effective in diminishing postoperative pain than the control procedure. However, the analysis revealed several significant correlates and predictors of postoperative pain. These included trait anxiety, depression, stress coping style as well as interview and rating scale reports of cognitive coping strategies. Significant predictors of credibility--expectancy, treatment utilization and cognitive coping classifications were also found. Analysis of the pain measurement strategy indicated consistency among the subjective measures--the McGill Pain Questionnaire and visual analogue scales--which were relatively independent from the objective measures, which comprised electronically monitored gross motor activity and analgesic medication requirements. Possible interpretations and implications of these results as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.
