Novel etheroatom containing aliphatic polyesters for biomedical and environmental applications

Gigli, Matteo <1984> 12 April 2013 (has links)
Biodegradable polymers for short time applications have attracted much interest all over the world. The reason behind this growing interest is the incompatibility of the polymeric wastes with the environment where they are disposed after usage. Synthetic aliphatic polyesters represent one of the most economically competitive biodegradable polymers. In addition, they gained considerable attention as they combine biodegradability and biocompatibility with interesting physical and chemical properties. In this framework, the present research work focused on the modification by reactive blending and polycondensation of two different aliphatic polyesters, namely poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(butylene 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PBCE). Both are characterized by good thermal properties, but their mechanical characteristics do not fit the requirements for applications in which high flexibility is requested and, moreover, both show slow biodegradation rate. With the aim of developing new materials with improved characteristics with respect to the parent homopolymers, novel etheroatom containing PBS and PBCE-based fully aliphatic polyesters and copolyesters have been therefore synthesized and carefully characterized. The introduction of oxygen or sulphur atoms along the polymer chains, by acting on chemical composition or molecular architecture, tailored solid-state properties and biodegradation rate: type and amount of comonomeric units and sequence distribution deeply affected the material final properties owing, among all, to the hydrophobic/hydrophilic ratio and to the different ability of the polymer to crystallize. The versatility of the synthesized copolymers has been well proved: as a matter of fact these polymers can be exploited both for biomedical and ecological applications. Feasibility of 3D electrospun scaffolds has been investigated, biocompatibility studies and controlled release of a model molecule showed good responses. As regards ecological applications, barrier properties and eco-toxicological assessments have been conducted with outstanding results. Finally, the ability of the novel polyesters to undergo both hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation has been demonstrated under physiological and environmental conditions.

Between the Name and the History. Transformations of political Discourse and Concept of Class at the beginning of the July Monarchy (1831-1832)

Tomasello, Federico <1979> 06 June 2013 (has links)
The research investigates the tensions and transformations of the main streams of political thought in France, considering the emergence of the notion of class. Starting from a conception of event as a point of intersection between history and theory, the dissertation focuses on the period November 1831-June 1832 in order to analyze how republican, liberal and socialist discourses interpreted the events unfolding during those months in the attempt of naming the social figures that swarmed in the public debate. The title Between the Name and the History hence refers to the analysis of the field of tension that emerges between the concrete historical becoming and the naming operations that signal the rise of long-lasting conceptual structures. The dissertation understands the appearance of the notion of working class as a «discursive formation» that questions the boundaries of the political. The 1848 break is taken as the horizon and external limit of the dissertation, since the research hypothesizes this rift as a first utterance of the regime of truth belonging to this discursive formation: the political statute of labor. The dissertation consists of four chapters. The first three chapters investigate the reflections on the political and the function of the concept of class in these reflections, triggered by some events occurring in 1831-1832. The first chapter analyzes the rhetoric emerging in the republican discourse, particularly in the newspaper National and in the Société des Amis du Peuple. The second chapter examines the reflections that sprung from the doctrinaire liberalism discourse of Guizot. The third chapter investigates the considerations of the rising socialist discourse: from the saint-simonian movement to Marx’s analysis of 1848 in France. The fourth chapter is centered upon the «social» dimension: namely, its elaboration and articulation through the study and the objectification of different figures in the realm of labor.

Valutazione della sostenibilità ambientale tramite metodologia LCA di sistemi per lo sfruttamento di fonti alternative di energia e materiali / Sustainability analysis through Life Cycle Assessment methodology of systems for alternative production of energy and material

Chiavetta, Cristian <1982> 12 September 2013 (has links)
The dissertation aims to provide the sustainability analysis of an agronomic system for biodiesel production in soil made infertile by namatode pests. The analysis has been performed through a comparative Life Cycle Assessment of an agronomic system of tobacco oil production with Ethiopian mustad green manure in order to contrast nematodes proliferation thanks to the Ethiopian mustar chemical composition, compared to a traditional tobacco cultivation using 1-3-dichloropropene to face the nematodes problem. In order to integrate the Life Cycle Assessment results with a Land use impact evaluation, the Soil Conditioning Index model (developed by the Agricultural Department of the United States, USDA) has been used.

Resources-saving in building. Non conventional technologies and environmental assessment with LCA approach.

Rizzo, Sara <1980> 12 September 2013 (has links)
Paolo Neri). / During my research period I worked to find strategies that assure saving resources in building field. I also worked to examine in depth a method for environmental evaluation of those strategies. I believe that human being has to leave the actual anthropocentric vision, in which all around us there is merchandise at our disposal. We have to entry into a new age of equilibrium between natural resources and human activities. I analyzed straw and clay as raw materials for sustainable buildings. In my opinion, industrialized construction building has to go flat and leave enough space for non conventional techniques and materials. I believe that we have to do more than only use natural materials in buildings. I believe also that energetic certification is not synonymous with reliability towards an eco-friendly product. For those reasons, I evaluated non conventional techniques with an LCA approach, analyzing impact in production phase, transporting, construction phase, end of life scenarios. Furthermore I studied IMPACT methodology for damage assessment and I find that there is a lack: the method doesn’t consider a damage category linked to human modification to natural hydrogeological conditions. I carried out the research through practical and experimental activities in construction sites, and LCA studies at Enea_Bologna (Ing. Paolo Neri).

Building Peace and/or Gender Equality. Changing Attitudes around Peace, Development and Security in International Cooperation in Rwanda.

Aguiari, Sabrina <1970> 11 September 2014 (has links)
The times following international or civil conflicts but also violent revolutions often come with unequal share of the peace dividend for men and women. Delusions for women who gained freedom of movement and of roles during conflict but had to step back during reconstruction and peace have been recorded in all regions of the world. The emergence of peacebuilding as a modality for the international community to ensure peace and security has slowly incorporated gender sensitivity at the level of legal and policy instruments. Focusing on Rwanda, a country that has obtained significant gender advancement in the years after the genocide while also obtaining to not relapse into conflict, this research explores to what extent the international community has contributed to this transformation. From a review of evaluations, findings are that many of the interventions did not purse gender equality, and overall the majority understood gender and designed actions is a quite superficial way which would hardly account for the significative advancement in combating gender discrimination that the Government, for its inner political will, is conducting. Then, after a critique from a feminist standpoint to the concept of human security, departing from the assumption (sustained by the Governemnt of Rwanda as well) that domestic violence is a variable influencing level of security relevant at the national level, a review of available secondary data on GBV is conducted an trends over the years analysed. The emerging trends signal a steep increase in prevalence of GBV and in domestic violence in particular. Although no conclusive interpretation can be formulated on these data, there are elements suggesting the increase might be due to augmented reporting. The research concludes outlining possible further research pathways to better understand the link in Rwanda between the changing gender norms and the GBV.

Metagenomic trajectory of gut microbiome in the human lifespan

Rampelli, Simone <1985> 11 April 2014 (has links)
Co-evolving with the human host, gut microbiota establishes configurations, which vary under the pressure of inflammation, disease, ageing, diet and lifestyle. In order to describe the multi-stability of the microbiome-host relationship, we studied specific tracts of the bacterial trajectory during the human lifespan and we characterized peculiar deviations from the hypothetical development, caused by disease, using molecular techniques, such as phylogenetic microarray and next-generation sequencing. Firstly, we characterized the enterocyte-associated microbiota in breast-fed infants and adults, describing remarkable differences between the two groups of subjects. Successively, we investigated the impact of atopy on the development of the microbiome in Italian childrens, highlithing conspicuous deviations from the child-type microbiota of the Italian controls. To explore variation in the gut microbiota depending on geographical origins, which reflect different lifestyles, we compared the phylogenetic diversity of the intestinal microbiota of the Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania and Italian adults. Additionally, we characterized the aged-type microbiome, describing the changes occurred in the metabolic potential of the gut microbiota of centenarians with respect to younger individuals, as a part of the pathophysiolology of the ageing process. Finally, we evaluated the impact of a probiotics intervention on the intestinal microbiota of elderly people, showing the repair of some age-related dysbioses. These studies contribute to elucidate several aspects of the intestinal microbiome development during the human lifespan, depicting the microbiota as an extremely plastic entity, capable of being reconfigured in response to different environmental factors and/or stressors of endogenous origin.

Antecedents and consequences of individual flexibility in project-based organizations

Vicentini, Francesca <1982> 27 May 2011 (has links)
In the last decades, the increasing significance of “projectivization” (Lundin & Steinthórsson, 2003) has stimulated considerable interest in project-based organizations as new economic actors able to introduce a new logic of organizing work and weakening boundaries in favour of networks of collaborations. In these contexts, work is often delegated to project teams. Deciding whom to put on a project team is one of the biggest challenges faced by a project manager; in particular which characteristics rely on to compose and match effective teams. We address this issue, focusing on the individual flexibility (Raudsepp, 1990), as team composition variable that affects project team performance. Thus, the research question investigated is: Is it better to compose project teams with flexible team members or not flexible project team members to achieve higher levels of project performance? The temporary nature of PBOs involves that after achieving the purpose for which team members are enrolled, they are disbanded but their relationships remain, allowing them to be involved in future projects (Starkey, Barnatt & Tempest, 2000). Pre-existing relationships together with the current relationships create a network of relationships that yields some implications for project teams as well as for team members. We address this issue, exploring the following research question: To what extent is the individual flexibility influenced by the network structure? The conceptual framework is used to articulate the research questions investigated with respect to the Television drama serials production. Their project-team organizing combined with their capacity to dissolve and recreate over time make it an interesting field to develop. We contribute to the organizational literature, providing a clear operationalization of individual flexibility construct and its role on affecting project performance. Second, we contribute to the organizational network literature addressing the effects yielded by the network structure-structural holes and network closure- on the individual flexibility.

Essays on Bank Risk

Cabiles, Neil Adrian <1982> 02 July 2012 (has links)
This PhD Thesis is composed of three chapters, each discussing a specific type of risk that banks face. The first chapter talks about Systemic Risk and how banks get exposed to it through the Interbank Funding Market. Exposures in the said market have Systemic Risk implications because the market creates linkages, where the failure of one party can affect the others in the market. By showing that CDS Spreads, as bank risk indicators, are positively related to their Net Interbank Funding Market Exposures, this chapter establishes the above Systemic Risk Implications of Interbank Funding. Meanwhile, the second chapter discusses how banks may handle Illiquidity Risk, defined as the possibility of having sudden funding needs. Illiquidity Risk is embodied in this chapter through Loan Commitments as they oblige banks to lend to its clients, up to a certain amount of funds at any time. This chapter points out that using Securitization as funding facility, could allow the banks to manage this Illiquidity Risk. To make this case, this chapter demonstrates empirically that banks having an increase in Loan Commitments, may experience an increase in risk profile but such can be offset by an accompanying increase in Securitization Activity. Lastly, the third chapter focuses on how banks manage Credit Risk also through Securitization. Securitization has a Credit Risk management property by allowing the offloading of risk. This chapter investigates how banks use such property by looking at the effect of securitization on the banks’ loan portfolios and overall risk and returns. The findings are that securitization is positively related to loan portfolio size and the portfolio share of risky loans, which translates to higher risk and returns. Thus, this chapter points out that Credit Risk management through Securitization may be have been done towards higher risk taking for high returns.

Collaborative Change: Environmental Jolt, Network (Re)Design and Firm Performance

Corbo, Leonardo <1983> 20 June 2012 (has links)
Motivated by the need to understand which are the underlying forces that trigger network evolution, we develop a multilevel theoretical and empirically testable model to examine the relationship between changes in the external environment and network change. We refer to network change as the dissolution or replacement of an interorganizational tie, adding also the case of the formation of new ties with new or preexisting partners. Previous research has paid scant attention to the organizational consequences of quantum change enveloping entire industries in favor of an emphasis on continuous change. To highlight radical change we introduce the concept of environmental jolt. The September 11 terrorist attacks provide us with a natural experiment to test our hypotheses on the antecedents and the consequences of network change. Since network change can be explained at multiple levels, we incorporate firm-level variables as moderators. The empirical setting is the global airline industry, which can be regarded as a constantly changing network of alliances. The study reveals that firms react to environmental jolts by forming homophilous ties and transitive triads as opposed to the non jolt periods. Moreover, we find that, all else being equal, firms that adopt a brokerage posture will have positive returns. However, we find that in the face of an environmental jolt brokerage relates negatively to firm performance. Furthermore, we find that the negative relationship between brokerage and performance during an environmental jolt is more significant for larger firms. Our findings suggest that jolts are an important predictor of network change, that they significantly affect operational returns and should be thus incorporated in studies of network dynamics.

Ownership, Multiple Blockholders and Performance: A study of the Indonesian Banking Industry

Chalid, Dony Abdul <1979> 20 June 2012 (has links)
The objective of this study is to provide empirical evidence on how ownership structure and owner’s identity affect performance, in the banking industry by using a panel of Indonesia banks over the period 2000–2009. Firstly, we analysed the impact of the presence of multiple blockholders on bank ownership structure and performance. Building on multiple agency and principal-principal theories, we investigated whether the presence and shares dispersion across blockholders with different identities (i.e. central and regional government; families; foreign banks and financial institutions) affected bank performance, in terms of profitability and efficiency. We found that the number of blockholders has a negative effect on banks’ performance, while blockholders’ concentration has a positive effect. Moreover, we observed that the dispersion of ownership across different types of blockholders has a negative effect on banks’ performance. We interpret such results as evidence that, when heterogeneous blockholders are present, the disadvantage from conflicts of interests between blockholders seems to outweigh the advantage of the increase in additional monitoring by additional blockholder. Secondly, we conducted a joint analysis of the static, selection, and dynamic effects of different types of ownership on banks’ performance. We found that regional banks and foreign banks have a higher profitability and efficiency as compared to domestic private banks. In the short-run, foreign acquisitions and domestic M&As reduce the level of overhead costs, while in the long-run they increase the Net Interest Margin (NIM). Further, we analysed NIM determinants, to asses the impact of ownership on bank business orientation. Our findings lend support to our prediction that the NIM determinants differs accordingly to the type of bank ownership. We also observed that banks that experienced changes in ownership, such as foreign-acquired banks, manifest different interest margin determinants with respect to domestic or foreign banks that did not experience ownership rearrangements.
