The decline of the Chinese matriarch : the struggle to reconcile "old" with "new"

Lee, Tara 05 1900 (has links)
The thesis examines representations of the matriarch in three Chinese Canadian texts: SKY Lee's Disappearing Moon Cafe, Wayson Choy's The Jade Peony, and Denise Chong's The Concubine's Children. The matriarch is the female head of the Chinese household who is able to gain substantial power by manipulating the assets granted to her in a patriarchal system. Dislocated from her home in China, she serves in these texts as the focal point for the collision between the New World, Canada, and the Old World, China. Confronted by a new environment, the matriarch must decide whether she will choose conformity or identity experimentation. The thesis is concerned with the way Chinese Canadian writers negotiate multiple identities through narrators who must come to terms with the divided loyalties of the women of the past. The analysis of the matriarch's identity shifts is informed by the work of the feminist theorists, Elspeth Probyn and Moira Gatens, who explore the productive potentials of rebelling against binary codes. The thesis is divided into three chapters that discuss how the texts come close to embracing identity fluidity, but cannot overcome the need to reach a coherent representation of the matriarch. The first chapter is devoted to Disappearing Moon Cafe, and argues that Lee's narrator sacrifices her female characters, albeit reluctantly, in order to privilege feminism over her Chinese heritage. The second chapter turns to The Jade Peony and discusses how Choy's child narrators give in to binary thinking by relegating Poh-Poh, the Old One, to the realm of memories to make room for the New Ways. The final chapter on The Concubine's Children explores Chong's desire to redeem a grandmother who wreaked havoc on the family when she defied traditional gender roles. The thesis concludes by determining that Lee, Choy, and Chong are reaching for a multi-voiced reading of the past, but cannot yet articulate a way out. The uncertainty of their representations of the matriarch signals their efforts to move beyond binaries to a state of coexisting identity categories.

L’envolée des ténèbres. Mort et deuil dans la poésie d’Anne Hébert, Fernand Ouellette, Jacques Brault et Denise Desautels.

Lamontagne, Lydia 11 January 2012 (has links)

Abstract: The work presents several different axis of investigation performed by a doctoral research on the life of Denise Stutz, Brazilian dancer who remains actively performing since the 1970s until the present days. The perspective of this research focuses on the experiences of this ballerina throughout her multiple poetic paths - her moments of formation, transformation and affirmation through dance. The methodological procedure adopted was the selection, with an analytical approach, of oral narratives through the transcreation (MEIHY, 2005) of her stories that were brought to life in recorded statements at times of recollection, and through narratives drawn from six scenic spectacles chosen as reference works (Mary, Mary, Folia, Do not Look Now; Homo politicus; three soils at a time and a fair picture: Letters and processes). The speech and movements of Denise Stutz were revealed during the narrative opposing the voice with the body, resulting in written text and imagery of a life in dance. We observe that this ballerina's body was formed by extensive references - classical ballet, modern dance, street drama, butoh, improvisation - going from moments of belonging to groups, dance companies and art groups, as well as solo projects. By investigating this path one may realize the different aesthetic and political choices made by this body when dancing and also one can reflect on the reorganization of contemporary dance's environment in relation to the scene and to the assignment of roles and forms of creation. Denise Stutz's transformations reflect her self-affirmation as a ballerina and also present her dance as a form of production of meaning and expression of life. / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestre em Educação

Hon tar vad man vill ha : en studie av sexuella maktrelationer i samtida relationsromaner

Claesson, Marlene January 2006 (has links)

The aim of this study is to analyse the sexual power relations in contemporary urban novels of Swedish female writers.

I have identified a discourse in these novels as a heteronormative matrix which power is ruled by norms and assumptions about normality in both the heterosexual and lesbian stories. For this purpose I have related to Ivar B. Neumanns theory that individuals always find a way to confront the discourse by three different strategies. These strategies are used in my study as tools to organise these novels, because it is possible to see that the protagonists find at least one of these strategy’s to her protest.

The first strategy I studied was the docile. Here I argument that the heroines in Alla vilda, Jag minns alla mina älskare och hur de brukade ta på mig, Inte enklare än så, Lögner and Att älska henne do not reject the discourse about sexual power relationships. The second strategy, named the oppositionist, implies the protagonists refusing to be left as victims. In one way or another, either by change the rolls of the sexes (Ta vad man vill ha) or by problematising the order of them (Ego girl) or find lesbianism as a way to reject the discourse (both the novels by Mian Lodalen: Smulklubbens skamlösa systrar and Trekant). The reluctant is the last strat-egy who is the creative one, which rejects some things and adapt to other. Here I place the heroines from Stjärnor utan svindel, Andra sidan Alex and Storlek 37.

The result of this study is that despite quite different strategies to oppose against the hetero-sexual power discourse and the normative femininity everyone relates to it and thereby con-firms it.

Teaching Is My Art Now

Stanley, Denise Y January 2008 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / This arts-informed inquiry is grounded in the lived experiences of five self-proclaimed artists including the researcher, who have turned to careers in teaching at varying stages of their lives. The stories of their transitions and evolving identities as both artists and teachers provide the investigative focus for this study. Although this research is relevant to teachers more generally, it specifically focuses on those who have chosen to teach Visual Arts. Particularly suited to a postmodern, arts-informed inquiry, the diverse forms of knowing that create our everyday experiences are acknowledged. The researcher became the bricoleur who collaged the individual stories of the first year artist-teachers into an integrated work of art. This constructivist approach included the use of visual imagery to transcend linguistic description. Through artworks, photographs, a self-narrative and novelette, the multiple ways these early career Visual Arts teachers came to understand themselves and their journeys are explored. This study has the potential to inform novice teachers of the transitions they may experience as they enter the teaching profession. Possible challenges, including the recognition that idealised beliefs might be traded in for more realistic representations, are discussed along with the notions of teaching as an art and the concept of resilience.

Semaan, Christian 12 1900 (has links) (PDF)
