Quantification de la dénudation glaciaire et postglaciaire dans l'orogène pyrénéen : bilans comparés parmi des cirques et des petits bassins versants en contexte climatique océanique et méditerranéen à l'aide des nucléides cosmogéniques produits in-situ et de mesures topométriques sous SIG / Quantification of the glacial and postglacial denudation in the Pyrenean orogen : comparative assessment among cirques and small catchments under Oceanic and Mediterranean climates using in situ terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides and GIS topometric measures

Crest, Yannick 15 September 2017 (has links)
The Pyrenees form a mid-latitude, intermediate altitude mountain range displaying weak tectonic activity and a westward gradient of increasing topographic inheritance from the work of Pleistocene glaciers. This thesis aims to characterize and to quantify the influence of the glacial and non-glacial erosive processes on the most elevated areas of the mountain range, during the last climatic cycle (~100 ka), according to an E-W transect from the Carlit to the Maladeta, via the Ariège. The Holocene tills volumes (Maladeta) were quantified from DEM- and GIS-derived measurements, while the lowering of the glaciated and unglaciated surfaces was determined from cosmogenic nuclides (CN). Denudation was measured through TCN concentrations in alluvial sediment in elevated catchments. Würmian denudation on supraglacial ridges (10–25 mm/ka) was slower than on cirque floors (30–40 mm/ka), thereby resulting in an increase in topographic relief. Denudation of the cirques floor increases during post-Würm spatially limited glaciations (20-400 mm/ka). Small Holocene glaciers erosion in the Maladeta is 180-700 mm/ka even > 1 m/ka. These rates are noteworthy higher than bedrock and regolith plateau weathering (2.60 mm/ka and 20-40 mm/ka, respectively). Postglacial catchments denudation (25-450 mm/ka) linearly increases with mean slope (r = 0.83) and then with the Pleistocene glacial inheritance of the landscape. Results confirm the atonic tectonic activity of the Pyrenees and show the influence of the glaciers and fragile meta-sedimentary lithologies on the Holocene denudation.

The basin is located in the municipality of Francisco Beltrão, in Paraná, draining the left bank of the middle valley of the river basin Marrecas. Monitoring the field began in august 2011, rising daily data of rainfall, flow and concentration of suspended solids in the sections of the channels drained the upper valley and the mouth of the river, to obtain the discharges suspended solids. Carrying out further surveys in ten soil profiles distributed throughout the basin, allowing the identification of the main soil classes (Regolithic Entisols, Inceptisols, Oxisols and Nitossolos) and the measurement of laboratory parameters such as density and real, total porosity and fines content (silt and clay). In the monitored period was recorded daily rainfall, which occurred on august 19, 165 mm, resulting in large peak flows and discharge of suspended solids, contributing to the total rainfall for the month of august 2011, 343 mm, reached the highest monthly index for the month of august, the last 37 years, according to data provided by the Meteorological Station of Francisco Beltrão. Recognizing that the largest fraction pedological removed by the force of runoff is composed of mud (silt and clay), this parameter was quantified for soils of the basin, yielding an average of 91.87%. From the data of total suspended solid discharge (1,616.54 tons. in the upper valley and 5960.38 tons. at the mouth) and the average density (1.05 g.cm-³) of soil profiles were estimated denudation rates for the month of august 2011, 0.0419 mm in the sector of the basin drained by the upper valley and 0.0527 mm in the area drained by the mouth of the river. These results were extrapolated to annual estimates, based on the monitored period of rainfall and monthly average of the years 1974 to 2010. The standard deviations of the average monthly rainfall, for those years, enabled the establishment of maximum and minimum estimates for the annual rates of denudation. The sector of the upper valley had average estimate of 0.2458 mm.yr-¹ can vary over a range of 0.1069 mm.yr-¹ to 0.3848 mm.yr-¹, while the sector had the mouth of the river estimated annual average higher, 0.3092 mm.yr-¹ may, however, vary in a range of 0.1344 mm.yr-¹ to 0.4840 mm.yr-¹.

Termocronologia (U-Th)He e reativação da margem continental do sudeste do Brasil: seção Serra da Mantiqueira - Gráben da Guanabara / (U-Th)He thermochronology and reactivation of the southeastern continental margin of Brazil: from Mantiqueira Mountains to Guanabara Graben

Laura Delgado Mendes 27 February 2013 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation involves low-temperature thermochronologic investigations to constrain the Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic reactivation of the continental margin of southeast Brazil. The study area is located in a segment of the Neoproterozoic Ribeira belt in southeastern Brazil, which occupied a central position in Western Gondwana. Lately, during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, fault zones related to the development of the continental rifts in southeast Brazil reactivated. Using apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronology (AHe), we have presented the results of analysis on 107 apatite crystals of basement samples collected from a NWSE transect in the Mantiqueira Mountains to the Guanabara Graben, as well as from the NESE transverse faults. The data range from 27.07 0.60 Ma to 174.13 3.03 Ma (1 σ) for uncorrected ages, and from 43.5 1.9 Ma to 250.1 8.7 Ma (2 σ) for corrected ages. The Neo-Cretaceous, Eo-Cretaceous, and Paleocene are the main recorded AHe ages, in order of importance. The Eo-Cretaceous ages indicate the occurrence of older thermal events related to a pre-rifting phase (~121 Ma). The Neo-Cretaceous ages signify the importance of tectonic and magmatic events, and regional uplifting for the thermal history of the study area, including ages related to the Serra do Mar Mountains uplift (~86 Ma). Paleocene ages seem to be related to the reactivation (~65 Ma), which was responsible for the continental rifts in the southeastern Brazil. Finally, the Eocene ages (49.7 Ma and 43.5 Ma), which are from samples restricted to the Resende Basin border faults, indicate a continental rift reactivation. We investigated the age dispersion data, which were interpreted as an effect of radiation damage. Several samples show correlations between apatite (U-Th)/He age and effective U concentration (eU). We have applied HeFTy thermal modeling to obtain timetemperature (t T) paths using a radiation damage diffusion model. Inverse modeling of (U-Th)/He age data suggests rapid cooling episodes for all samples. The main thermal events recorded by the HeFTy models show a direct correlation with the timing of regional tectonic events: reactivation phases, continental margin uplift, and the sedimentary record. Apatite (U-Th)/He ages increase with distance from the coast and with elevation. However, these patterns are discontinued by samples of younger ages as a result of the reactivation process of pre-existing structures in the Brazilian continental margin. The total estimated denudation range from 1.2 to 2.8 km. The erosion rates range from 15.2 to 35.3 m/My. Thus, the multi-episodic thermal events, which led to the formation of important regional tectonic and geomorphological features (Mantiqueira Mountains, Serra do Mar Mountains, grabens, and sedimentary basins), seem to play a fundamental role in the evolution of the Brazilian continental margin. The records can be found in the thermal history of rocks and its correlated deposits in the continental margin.

Ansberque, Claire 11 April 2016 (has links)
This manuscript concerns the tectonic and geomorphic analysis of the Longriba fault system (LFS), located in the eastern Tibetan plateau at about 200 km north-west of the Longmen Shan. The LFS consists of two dextral strike-slip fault zones, parallel and N55 °-trending: the Longriqu fault to the north and the Maoergai fault the south. The geodynamic role of the system is essential as accommodates 5 ± 1 mm / year of the slip component induced by the oblique convergence of the Aba block, itself linked to the India-Asia collision. In addition, the LFS partitions the deformation of the east Tibetan margin; the structures of the Longmen Shan are mainly thrust faults. However the long-term history of LFS is poorly constrained. The objective of this thesis is to bring spatial and temporal information on system activity throughout the Cenozoic. To do so, three studies were performed. The first led to better constrain the seismogenic behavior of the two fault zones with low resolution (90m) and very high resolution satellite images (50cm). The analysis of cumulative displacements along the Maoergai fault allowed to propose that it was active at ~ 15 Ma. The second study showed that the system controls the distribution of the denudation rates over the EastTibetan margin throughout the Holocene. Finally, the low-temperature thermochronology data suggest that, in particular, the Maoergai fault has accommodated a vertical movement at ~ 10 Ma. This movement is probably related to the isostatic rebound of the margin, decoupled from the strike-slip movement it accommodates at the same period.

Dynamique long‐terme d’une marge continentale divergente (Les Ghâts Occidentaux de l’Inde péninsulaire) : contraintes géochronologiques 40Ar‐39Ar des paléosurfaces latéritiques / Long-term dynamic of a continental passive margin (the Western Ghats of peninsular India) : 40Ar-39Ar geochronological constraints of lateritic paleolandsurfaces

Bonnet, Nicolas 26 January 2015 (has links)
The western continental passive margin of Peninsular India is marked by the Western Ghats escarpment, which separates the coastal lowland from the highland plateaus and is carved both into the 63-Ma old Deccan Trapps and their Archean basement. Previous studies suggested establishment of the escarpment by erosion across an elevated rift shoulder, and thermochronologic models predicted strong denudation in the coastal lowland by ~ 50 Ma.We provided complementary time constraints on the evolution of the passive margin by 40Ar-39Ar dating of supergene K-Mn oxides (cryptomelane) sampled in lateritic formations exposed on paleosurfaces, which are preserved as relicts on the highland plateau and in the coastal lowland on both sides of the escarpment. Three main lateritic paleosurfaces were identified, sampled and dated in the highland at different altitude ranges, and one in the lowland.Preservation of laterites as old as 47 Ma in the coastal lowland implies that the escarpment already existed in the Mid-Eocene while intense bauxitic weathering was taking place on both sides of the escarpment. Our results indicate limited erosion (~ 4 m.Ma-1) at the foot of the escarpment since 47 Ma, and low incision rate of the lowland (~ 5 m.Ma-1) since 19 Ma. Ages obtained on the highland indicate further Neogene erosion but at less than 15 m.Ma-1 since 45 Ma, and incision lower than 6 m.Ma-1 since 23 Ma. Our results further document post-Eocene divergent erosion and weathering histories across the escarpment since it was formed, suggesting installation of a dual climatic regime on either sides of this escarpment after the Eocene peak greenhouse.

Formation of geomorphic features as a response to sea-level change at Ritidian Point, Guam, Mariana Islands

Miklavic, Blaz 30 April 2011 (has links)
Geomorphic features have been one of the major tools for sea-level change studies. The present work shows an example of sea-level change study on karst terrain in the tropics. Sea-level notches as well as flank margin caves were identified in the research area and their elevation measured. The time of formation of the sea-level indicators was constrained by lithology study and dating methods such as facies comparison and U-Th dating. Denudation and uplift were also studied for the same purpose. From this study it can be concluded that sea-level stands within the glacial cycle can cause the formation of flank margin caves and that the position of these sea-level stands can be determined. The research area was estimated to have cumulatively uplifted ~22 m in the past 125 ka years (~0.18 mm/yr) while the surface has been denuded some 8 m in the same span of time (~0.064 mm/yr).

Variable Denudation in the Evolution of the Bolivian Andes: Controls and Uplift-Climate-Erosion Feedbacks

Barnes, Jason B. January 2002 (has links)
Controls on denudation in the eastern Bolivian Andes are evaluated by synthesis of new and existing denudation estimates from basin-morphometry, stream - powered fluvial incision, landslide mapping, sediment flux, erosion surfaces, thermochronology, foreland basin sediment volumes, and structural restorations. Centered at 17.5 °S, the northeastern Bolivian Andes exhibit high relief, a wet climate, and a narrow fold- thrust belt. In contrast, the southeastern Bolivian Andes have low relief, a semi-arid climate, and a wide fold-thrust belt. Basin -morphometry indicates a northward increase in relief and relative denudation. Stream-power along river profiles shows greater average incision rates in the north by a factor of 2 to 4. In the south, profile knickpoints with high incision rates are controlled by fold-thrust belt structures such as the surface expressions of basement megathrusts, faults, folds, and lithologic boundaries. Landslide and sediment-flux data are controlled by climate, elevation, basin morphology, and size and show a similar trend; short -term denudation-rate averages are greater in the north (1- 9 mm/yr) than the south (0.3-0.4 mm/yr). Long-term denudation-rate estimates including fission track, basin fill, erosion surfaces, and structural restorations also exhibit greater values in the north (0.2-0.8 mm/yr) compared to the south (0.04-0.3 mm/yr). Controls on long-term denudation rates include relief, orographic and global atmospheric circulation patterns of precipitation, climate change, glaciation, and fold-thrust belt geometry and kinematics. The denudation synthesis supports two conclusions: 1) denudation rates have increased towards the present 2) an along-strike disparity in denudation (greater in the north) has existed since at least the Miocene and has increased towards the present. Denudation rates and controls suggest that Bolivian mountain morphology is controlled by both its orientation at mid-latitude, and the feedbacks between uplift, kinematics, orographic effects on precipitation, glaciation, and the increased erosion that accompanies orogenesis.
