DEVELOPMENT OF A QUALITATIVE INDEX FOR DOCTORAL PROGRAMS.

TAN, DAVID LYE. January 1985 (has links)
The purposes of the study were to identify the dimensions of the quality of doctoral programs, to develop a qualitative index based on these dimensions, and to examine the validity of the index. A total of ten objective variables and 200 doctoral programs in the disciplines of physics, electrical engineering, biochemistry, and sociology were examined in this study. Alpha common factor analysis rotated using varimax was the statistical technique employed to identify the dimensions of quality. Factor analysis identified two dimensions of the quality of doctoral programs in physics, electrical engineering, biochemistry, and sociology. The first dimension was the size-related input dimension dominated primarily by variables such as the number of graduate students, the number of faculty, the amount of departmental research spending, and the size of the library. The second dimension was the outcomes dimension dominated by variables such as the student success rate of gaining academic/research positions in Ph.D.-granting universities, faculty research productivity, faculty grantsmanship, and the student success rate of gaining professional employment outside academia. When one or both dimensions were used as bases for ranking programs, the method that used both dimensions (the composite QI) was better in producing plausible rankings of programs. The main advantage of using both dimensions was that the second dimension acted as a suppressant (or control) to the first factor causing the index to produce a more plausible estimate of quality.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS IN ARIZONA AND THEIR ASSOCIATION TO HEALTH OUTCOMES

Crescioni, Mabel January 2011 (has links)
Local Health Departments (LHD) that aim to address the public health needs of growing populations require qualified professionals with management competencies. In Arizona, the majority of public health services are delivered by the county health departments, which are charged with assisting community members and monitoring and improving community health. These activities are funded with federal, state and local money, which varies across counties. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the local public health system in Arizona, the distribution of public health services across counties and examines the association between health outcomes data and funding patterns for each county. National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) data from their 2008 survey was used to examine the activities performed at the local level. The majority of the activities in which the LHDs focus fall within the assurance function of public health. Interviews with all Arizona county health department directors (N=15) were conducted. Discussion focused on LHD activities, county and state political/policy climate and partnerships that contribute to LHDs activities. Responses varied significantly across the state due to differences in demographic and financial characteristics of the counties. Many political, socioeconomic and environmental barriers to provision of services were identified as well as the need for developing a stronger public health infrastructure. Finally, associations between several health outcomes and funding, workforce and demographic data of the 15 local health departments in Arizona were examined by conducting correlation analysis and linear regressions. This study found strong positive associations between LHD revenues, LHD expenditures, population size and number of LHD employees and HIV/AIDS incidence, low birth weight births and infant mortality rate. Positive associations were also found between revenues and number of women who received prenatal care and HIV/AIDS mortality rate as well as between number of LHD employees and diabetes mortality rate. This study represents a small step in better understanding the local public health system in Arizona, the distribution of public health services across counties and the political, financial and policy constraints faced by county health department directors.

The Integrated Laboratory Sequence Approach in Undergraduate Chemistry Programs

Luce, Larry G. 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of a survey of the various integrated laboratory sequence programs at college and university chemistry departments. A preliminary questionnaire served to determine which chemistry departments had tried an ILS approach. Those departments which responded that they had tried an ILS approach and were willing to answer a questionnaire concerning it were sent copies of the main questionnaire. The returned copies of these two questionnaires form the source of data for the dissertation. The dissertation is organized into five chapters. The first chapter gives the background and significance, statement of the problem, the purposes and delimitations of the study, and a definition of terms. Chapter II is a review of the literature. Chapter III describes the collection of data. Construction, validation, administration, and analysis of the questionnaire are considered. The findings of the study are presented in Chapter IV. After an introduction, the occurrence of ILS programs and the reasons for trying or not trying an ILS approach are tabulated. The nature of the ILS programs which have been tried and the problems and changes that have occurred in the various programs are presented. The last part of Chapter IV is devoted to the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the ILS approach. Chapter V presents a summary of the findings. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made on the basis of the findings.

Navy Marine Corps Intranet : an analysis of its approach to the challenges associated with seat management contracting

Bullock, Kenneth F. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. / Since 1997, Government agencies have been implementing seat management approaches to information technology contracting. Also known as desktop outsourcing, seat management is a process whereby agencies outsource all maintenance and ownership of their desktop computers, including all required hardware, software, network support, maintenance, and help desk services with pricing computed an a per user - or per seat - basis. The Navy Marine Corps Intranet - or NMCI - is arguably the largest and most complex seat management effort undertaken to date. It is designed to eventually cover approximately 360,000 Navy and Marine Corps users. This thesis explores the seat management method of contracting and the challenges inherent in this method of acquiring desktop computing power. Such challenges include benchmarking technical performance requirements, establishing performance measures, creating effective incentives, preparing for the transition to seat management, and managing the required culture change. The NMCI program's approach to addressing these challenges is analyzed and recommendations are provided as to where improvements can be made in order to increase the likelihood that NMCI will achieve its expected benefits. / Department of the Navy author (civilian).

Våld på akutmottagningar med fokus påsjuksköterskors arbetssituation : En litteraturöversikt / Violence in emergency departments with an emphasis on nurses’work situation. A literature review

Hammarbäck, Amanda, Ohrmhierta, Nadja January 2017 (has links)
Background: Violence in the health care profession is a growing problem. Emergency departments are one of the more high risk areas for nurses to be subjected to violent acts from patients and their accompanied family. An emergency department is open around the clock which results in high patient flow and an increased work load for nurses. Aim : To illustrate violence in emergency departments with an emphasis on nurses’ experiences and work situation. Method : The study was conducted as a literature review. The results are based on 15 scientific articles with a qualitative and quantitative approach. Results: Working as a nurse at an emergency department means a risk of being subjected to violence from patients and their accompanied family or friends. Most prone to be subjected to violence are younger nurses with a short work experience in emergency care. Verbal abuse dominates the physical violence. Violence create different feelings among the nurses such as fear, anxiety, anger and a form of acceptance. These feelings may have an impact on nurses’ ability in providing optimal care. Most of the nurses subjected to violence during their work chose not to report the event to their supervisors. Conclusion : International statistics shows that a recent graduate young female nurse working at an emergency department has a high statistic risk of being subjected to violence from patients and their accompanied family or friends. Nurses’ work situation and health are negatively affected by violence. This may lead to an elevated risk of the need for sick leave and dissatisfaction at work. The results implicate the need of more education and clearer routines on how to manage and report violent incidents.

Privacy policies and practices: an investigation of secondary use of information within South African retail banking institutions

Daya, Jithendra Chotoo January 1996 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in the partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Commerce. Johannesburg 1996. / This paper addresses concerns surrounding information privacy and the secondary use of information in South African corporations. This study also attempts to assess the level of concern that management and information technology practitioners if! South African retail banks have about privacy issues. The research suggests that privacy is a huge concern internationally and may affect South African corporations if they do not follow certain policies and practices. Eleven in-person structured interviews were conducted at four banks. The research proposes a set of guidelines by which South African management and IT practitioners, who are involved with the identification and solution of some of the problems that may be presented by possible privacy legislation, will be able to assess their policies and practices against international practices and policies. The results inform IS managers and executives about appropriate business policies they can implement voluntarily to address public concerns about specific information practices that may be considered a threat to privacy. The findings suggest that the executives are deliberately avoiding confronting the issue of information privacy for as long as possible. The executives are adopting a wait-and-see attitude and will react 011 whatever legislation requires them to do. At the time of the report senior executives at banks were not accepting responsibility for information privacy policies and practices and were leaving this responsibility; to the middle level managers who implement their own practices based on their own needs. / GR2017

Sjuksköterskans upplevelse av säker vård inom akutsjukvård.

Johansson, Elin, Ek, Amanda January 2019 (has links)
