Module extraction for inexpressive description logics

Module extraction is an important reasoning task, aiding in the design, reuse and maintenance of ontologies. Reasoning services such as subsumption testing and MinA extraction have been shown to bene t from module extraction methods. Though various syntactic traversal-based module extraction algorithms exist for extracting modules, many only consider the subsumee of a subsumption statement as a selection criterion for reducing the axioms in the module. In this dissertation we extend the bottom-up reachability-based module extraction heuristic for the inexpressive Description Logic EL, by introducing a top-down version of the heuristic which utilises the subsumer of a subsumption statement as a selection criterion to minimize the number of axioms in a module. Then a combined bidirectional heuristic is introduced which uses both operands of a subsumption statement in order to extract very small modules. We then investigate the relationship between MinA extraction and bidirectional reachabilitybased module extraction. We provide empirical evidence that bidirectional reachability-based module extraction for subsumption entailments in EL provides a signi cant reduction in the size of modules for almost no additional costs in the running time of the original algorithms. / Computer Science / M. Ephedra: a C to Java migration environment

The Internet has grown in popularity in recent years, and thus it has gained importance for many current businesses. They need to offer their products and services through their Web sites. To present not only static content but also interactive services, the logic behind these services needs to be programmed. Various approaches for programming Web services exist. The Java programming language can be used to implement Web services that run both on Internet clients and servers, either exclusively or in interaction with each other. The Java programming language is standardised across computing platforms and has matured over the past few years, and is therefore a popular choice for the implementation of Web services. The amount of available and well-tested Java source code is still small compared to other programming languages. Rather than taking the risks and costs of redeveloping program libraries, it is often preferable to move the core logic of existing solutions to Java and then integrate it into Java programs that present the services in a Web interface. In this Ph.D. dissertation, we survey and evaluate a selection of current approaches to the migration of source code to Java. To narrow the scope of the dissertation to a reasonable limit, we focus on the C and C++ programming languages as the source languages. Many mature programs and program libraries exist in these languages. The survey of current migration approaches reveals a number of their restrictions and disadvantages in the context of moving program libraries to Java and integrating them with Java programs. Using the experiences from this survey, we established a number of goals for an improved migration approach and developed the Ephedra approach by closely following these goals. To show the practicality of this approach, we implemented an automated tool that performs the migration according to the Ephedra approach and evaluated the migration process and its result with respect to the goals we established using selected case studies. Ephedra provides a high degree of automation for the migration process while letting the software-engineer make decisions where multiple choices are possible. A central problem in the migration from C to Java is the trans formation of C pointers to Java references. Ephedra provides two different strategies for this transformation and explains their applicability to subject systems. The code resulting from a migration with Ephedra is maintainable and functionally equivalent to the original code save some well documented exceptions. Performance trade-offs are analysed and evaluated in the light of the intended subject systems. / Graduate

A methodology for analyzing hardware description language specifications of legacy designs

In order to increase productivity, methodologies based on reuse of previously designed components are exploited by the Integrated Circuit (IC) design community. However, designers are often faced with the problem of reusing a legacy design for which the behavior is unclear due to missing documentation and the complexity of the design. In this dissertation a methodology to assist designers in retrieving the original intent of a design from its Hardware Description Language (HDL) specification is described. The methodology is based on code analysis and techniques which produce different views of HDL code. These views represent the behavior of a design in more abstract terms than the HDL code. / Graduate

No entanto, devido à escassez de pesquisas acerca do desenvolvimento juvenil, toma-se dificil qualquer definição de caracteres morfológicos que lhes sejam peculiares nesta fase de vida sem um estudo pormenorizado baseado em espécimes criados em laboratório. O objetivo deste trabalho é a apresentação de detalhes morfológicos e caracteIÍsticas mais significativas para a identificação dos estágios do desenvolvimento juvenil de Callinectes danae e Portunus spinimanus. Os siris foram coletados sob a forma de megalopa, na enseada de Ubatuba/SP e transportados até o laboratório. As megalopas e siris jovens, sob inspeção diária, foram cultivados isoladamente a 25± 1°C, água do mar (350/00) filtrada e aerada. A alimentação consistiu de nauplius de Artemia sp. e ração para peixes ornamentais. Doze e nove estágios juvenis foram obtidos para C. danae e P. spinimanus, respectivamente. As diferenças morfológicas mais marcantes do primeiro estágio juvenil de ambas as espécies foram: os espinhos da margem interna do mero do quelípodo, o longo espinho superior do carpo do quelípodo, a segmentação do palpo da mandíbula, o número de segmentos no flagelo antenal, o número de segmentos no exopodito da antênula e a presença/ausência de pleópodos rudimentares. As modificações mais marcantes dos estágios posteriores referem-se ao aparecimento dos caracteres sexuais secundários (pleópodos), os quais surgem no quarto e terceiro estágios juvenis em C. danae e P. spinimanus, respectivamente. Os resultados obtidos servem de base para futuros estudos sobre sistemática, ecologia e como subsídio para futuras implantações de cultivo destes... Nevertheless, due to the scarcity of investigationon juvenile development, it is difficult to define their diagnostic characters at thislife phase. This study aimed to present morphological details and the most significant features for the identification of juvenile development stages of Callinectes danae and Portunusspinimanus. The specimens were collected from megalopa stage, in Ubatuba/SP bay. The megalopae and young crabs were daily inspected and raised isolated at 25±loC, aeratedand filtered sea water (35%0). The larvae and juvenile were fed with newly hatched nauplii of Artemia sp. and commercial food for ornamental fish. Twelve and nine juvenile stages were obtained for C. danae and P. spinimanus, respectively. The most significant differences ofthe first juvenil e stage between both species were: the inner marginal spines on cheliped's merus, the long superior spine on cheliped's carpus, the mandible's palp segmentation, the antennal flagellum segment's number, the antennule exopod segment's number and the presence/absence of rudimentary pleopods. The most significant changes that occur in subsequent stages refers to the appearance of secondary sexual characters (pleopods), which arise from the fourth and third juvenile stages in C. danae and P. spinimanus, respectively. This study was undertaken to find out what problems the Administrative Operations Division was encountering in the absence of a job description plan. Many employees in the division were not aware of their actual job functions. They have only been giver a class description of their jobs by the Bureau of Personnel, which is not the actual job functions. They have only been given a class description of their jobs by the Bureau of Personnel, which is not the actual description that they are entitled to from the division in which they are employed. A class description is a stigmatization of general duties performed by employees assigned to that class. A detailed job description is a listing of the specific and everyday duties of an employee assigned to that poison The study found that this is indeed a problem in the Administrative Operations Division. This paper recommends that the problem be corrected by developing detailed job descriptions for each employee in the division, and specific recommendations are made toward that end.

Notre proposition consiste à présenter un modèle et une infrastructure d'exécution orienté composant pour le domaine des applications multi-tâches à contraintes temps réel souples et embarquées (nommé Tinap). Nous définissons un modèle de composant reposant sur plusieurs vues : une vue structurelle, placée au centre du cycle de conception, reposant initialement sur le modèle Fractal, une vue dynamique permettant au concepteur, dans une démarche descriptive, de personnaliser l'architecture métier pour définir les aspects de son applicatif liés à la concurrence, et enfin une vue implantation et une vue comportement fournissant respectivement une abstraction de l'implantation interne des composants et de leur comportement à l'égard de leur environnement. De plus, notre proposition est intégrée à un cadre méthodologique dirigé par les modèles. Nous avons également expérimenté le paradigme composant à différents niveaux d'abstraction: pour l'applicatif et pour celui de l'infrastructure d'exécution qui les implante. Enfin, au niveau du système d'exploitation fournissant les services élémentaires nécessaires. Cette démarche est motivée par la volonté d'exploiter notre modèle multi-vues canonique et de l'adapter en fonction des besoins de chaque niveau d'abstraction. Cette expérimentation est menée avec Think, une implantation en C des spécifications Fractal. Nous expérimentons Tinap par deux cas d'étude que nous avons prototypés. En premier lieu, pour concevoir une application d'analyse et de contrôle de flux multimédias par l'intermédiaire de disques vinyles. En second lieu pour expérimenter la mise en oeuvre du modèle d'exécution Accord (une méthodologie de conception pour applications temps-réel). / Our proposal is to present a component-oriented model and execution infrastructure for soft realtime and embedded applications (called Tinap). We define a component model based on several views : a structural view placed at the centre of the design cycle and based initially on the Fractal component model. A dynamic view, allowing the designer, in a descriptive way, to directly customize its functional architecture with concurrency-related aspects. Finally, an implementation and a behavioral view, providing respectively an abstraction of the structure and the behavior of the internal implementations of the components according to the environment. Moreover, our proposal has been incorporated into a model-based approach in order to mitigate the complexities of the design phases. We also experienced the component paradigm at different levels of abstraction: at application level and at execution infrastructure one. The latter implements the high-level concepts provided to the designer. Finally, at the operating system level which provides the services required by the infrastructure. This approach is motivated by the will to exploit our canonical model at these different levels, and to adapt it depending on their needs. This experimentation was conducted with Think, a C implementation of Fractal specifications. We present two case studies prototyped with Tinap. First, an application for DJ's: From a dedicated signal pressed on a vinyl and analysed by the software, the user is able to control various multimedia sources (audio/video). Secondly, for the implementation of the Accord execution model (a design methodology for real-time applications).
