Heterogenitet i skogsbestånd : faktorer av betydelse för artrikedom och förekomst av småfåglar / Heterogeneity of forest habitats : factors of importance for species richness and abundance among passerine birds

Strömberg, Sanna January 2011 (has links)
In this study, the occurrence of 18 forest bird species in southern Sweden was investigated in relation to parameters such as forest heterogeneity and the environmental factors tree diameter, variation in tree diameter, dead wood and fraction of deciduous trees. Birds were recorded along transects of 100 meters. The relationships between coniferous tree diameters and total number of bird species were predominantly found to be negative at trunk diameters of 0-30 centimeters, while mainly positive at trunk diameters of 30-80 centimeters. Also, the total number of species significantly increased with increasing variation in trunk diameter. There was also a tendency towards an increase of the total number of species with increasing basal area of dead wood. In Swedish forestry, spruces are felled when they are about 30 centimeters in trunk diameter. Thus the results indicate that felling of spruce is at the size when the trees start having a positive effect on the number of bird species. That the number of species increased at trunk diameter above 30 centimeters can be connected to the fact that the number of cavities is higher. That the number of species increased with increasing variation in trunk diameter can be due to a larger range of micro habitats. In conclusion, tree diameter, variation in tree diameter and dead wood were demonstrated as important environmental factors affecting the number of bird species. In order to maintain bird species richness in Swedish forests, these environmental factors should be considered in the context of forestry.

Assessment Of Velocity Of Detonation At Kumtor Open Pit Gold Mine

Duzgun, Ozkan 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
One of the most important properties of an explosive is its velocity of detonation (VOD). It is essential that the explosive should detonate at its optimum rate and release sufficient detonation pressure to get good fragmentation under the existing field conditions. The main objectives of this research study are to investigate the effects of explosive type, blast hole diameter, and degree of confinement on the VOD of bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion in Kumtor Open Pit Gold Mine. In this study, the continuous resistance wire method is employed to measure in-situ VOD of both bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion. The VOD values are measured for different hole diameters and under different confinements for both explosives. The ideality of bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion is calculated by comparing the in-situ measured VOD&rsquo / s and their ideal detonation values. It is found that the VOD of both explosives increases as the blast hole diameter and the degree of confinement increases. In addition to this, VOD of bulk ANFO decreases when it gets wet in the blast hole. Another finding is that, proportion of bulk emulsion ingredients has influence on its VOD. This research study provides a good understanding to use suitable explosive in existing rock conditions in Kumtor Open Pit Gold Mine.

Studies On Impinging-Jet Atomizers

Gadgil, Hrishikesh Prabhakar 01 1900 (has links)
Characteristics of impinging-jet atomizers in the context of application in liquid propulsion systems are studied in this thesis. A review of past studies on impinging jets revealed the necessity of a correlation in terms of injector parameters for predicting Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of a spray. So, an experimental study of atomization in doublet and triplet impinging jet injectors is conducted using water as the stimulant? The major injector parameters considered are orifice diameter, impingement angle and jet velocity. Relative influences of these parameters are explained in terms of a single parameter, specific normal momentum. SMD of the spray reduces as specific normal momentum is increased. A universal expression between non-dimensional SMD and specific normal momentum is obtained, which satisfactorily predicts SMD in doublets as well as triplets. Noting that practical impinging injectors are likely to have skewness (partial impingement), the study is extended to understand the behavior of such jets. In perfectly impinging doublet, a high aspect ratio ellipse-like mass distribution pattern is obtained with major axis normal to the plane of two jets whereas in skewed jets the major axis turns from its normal position. A simple correlation is obtained, which shows that this angle of turn is a function of skewness fraction and impingement angle only and is independent of injection velocity. Experimental data from both mass distribution and photographic technique validate this prediction. SMD is found to decrease as skewness is increased. This may be the combined effect of shearing of liquid sheet at the point of impingement and more sheet elongation. Hence, skewness turns out to be an important parameter in controlling drop size.

Rußbildung in der Kohlenwasserstoffpyrolyse hinter Stoßwellen / Soot Formation in Hydrocarbon Pyrolysis behind Shock Waves

Tanke, Dietmar 24 January 1995 (has links)

Επίδραση της αλατότητας και του σταδίου ανάπτυξης στην πλευστότητα αυγών τσιπούρας (Sparus aurata, L. 1758) / The effect of salinity and stage of development on the buoyancy of eggs of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata, L. 1758)

Λεονταρίτου, Παναγιώτα 28 June 2007 (has links)
Gilthead seabream is a species of high commercial interest. It is very important for Greek fish farming. Although, there has been great research on the species, there are still many questions unanswered, especially in the area of reproduction. This study gives information regarding the egg buoyancy of farmed gilthead seabream coming from the Atlantic or the Mediterranean, under natural or late photoperiod, during the whole reproduction period (4,5 months)and under 7 different salinities (32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 ppt). Salinity at reproduction was 40 ppt. The diameter of the eggs was also measured (at 32 and 35 ppt). The results have particular ecological interest, as they allow the formation of some hypothesis regarding the influence of different factors in the recruitment of gilthead seabream in nature.

Relationships between coastal Douglas-fir site index and synoptic categorical measures of site quality

Klinka, Karel, Carter, R. E. (Reid E.), Chourmouzis, Christine January 2001 (has links)
Knowledge of ecological characteristics of trees, sites and tree growth on different sites is fundamental for silvicultural decision-making and planning. With the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification in place, silvicultural management in British Columbia has been given an ecological foundation; however, relationships between growth and site have not yet been fully investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine how height growth of Douglas-fir within the drier portion of the CWH zone varies with site. We adopted site index (m @ 50 yr bh) as a species-specific measure of forest productivity, recognizing that it indicates height growth performance at a selected point in time. If forest productivity is correlated with ecological measures of site quality, what site factors should be used to quantify the relationships? Because of compensating effects, the numerous site factors can be reduced to four primary (synoptic) factors that directly affect plant establishment and growth: climate (light and temperature), soil moisture, soil nutrients, and soil aeration (not used in this study).

Mining Tera-Scale Graphs: Theory, Engineering and Discoveries

Kang, U 01 May 2012 (has links)
How do we find patterns and anomalies, on graphs with billions of nodes and edges, which do not fit in memory? How to use parallelism for such Tera- or Peta-scale graphs? In this thesis, we propose PEGASUS, a large scale graph mining system implemented on the top of the HADOOP platform, the open source version of MAPREDUCE. PEGASUS includes algorithms which help us spot patterns and anomalous behaviors in large graphs. PEGASUS enables the structure analysis on large graphs. We unify many different structure analysis algorithms, including the analysis on connected components, PageRank, and radius/diameter, into a general primitive called GIM-V. GIM-V is highly optimized, achieving good scale-up on the number of edges and available machines. We discover surprising patterns using GIM-V, including the 7-degrees of separation in one of the largest publicly available Web graphs, with 7 billion edges. PEGASUS also enables the inference and the spectral analysis on large graphs. We design an efficient distributed belief propagation algorithm which infer the states of unlabeled nodes given a set of labeled nodes. We also develop an eigensolver for computing top k eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the adjacency matrices of very large graphs. We use the eigensolver to discover anomalous adult advertisers in the who-follows-whom Twitter graph with 3 billion edges. In addition, we develop an efficient tensor decomposition algorithm and use it to analyze a large knowledge base tensor. Finally, PEGASUS allows the management of large graphs. We propose efficient graph storage and indexing methods to answer graph mining queries quickly. We also develop an edge layout algorithm for better compressing graphs.

Development of a tissue engineering strategy to create highly compliant blood vessels

Crapo, Peter Maughan 16 December 2008 (has links)
Compliance mismatch is a significant hurdle to long-term patency in small-diameter arterial bypass grafts. Vascular tissue engineering has the potential to produce compliant, non-thrombogenic small-diameter grafts. However, current engineered grafts are relatively non-compliant, resulting in intimal hyperplasia and graft occlusion when subjected to arterial pressures. This research investigates the mechanical and biological properties of engineered constructs based on a biodegradable synthetic elastomer, poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS). Several methods for fabricating porous PGS scaffolds in a tubular geometry were developed and compared. Adult baboon vascular cells were cultured in the scaffolds under various in vitro experimental conditions, including variations in initial cell seeding density, the type of scaffold used for culture, culture time, scaffold material, and hydrostatic pressure, and properties of the resultant constructs were compared. Scaffold fabrication using heat-shrinkable mandrels and glass tubes coated with hyaluronic acid significantly decreased tolerances of wall thickness and mechanical properties, improved handling, and decreased culture time required to reach luminal cellular confluence compared to scaffolds made with other fabrication techniques. Altering scaffold material from PGS to poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), a benchmark biomaterial, did not affect scaffold yield, porosity, or luminal cellular confluence. Extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition increased with SMC-only culture time, and ECM deposition and remodeling during culture influenced construct compliance. Compared to PLGA scaffolds, PGS scaffolds promoted elastin crosslinking by SMCs and elastic tissue properties but attenuated collagen deposition. Hydrostatic pressure promoted ECM synthesis and deposition by SMCs and decreased construct compliance. Collagen and crosslinked elastin content in constructs correlated positively with construct burst pressure, and a negative correlation dependent on scaffold type was found between collagen content and construct compliance at low pressures. The systematic investigation of culture conditions in this research provides insights into the control of engineered blood vessel properties. The central hypothesis of this work, that grafts engineered from PGS scaffolds and adult vascular cells under biomimetic in vitro culture conditions can possess compliance comparable to autologous vessels, is true at pressures below 60 mmHg and demonstrates potential for PGS-based vascular tissue engineering. Overall, this work provides tools for engineering tubular soft tissues based on porous PGS scaffolds.
