Produção de uva \'Niagara Rosada\' submetida a diferentes frequencia de podas de produção e proteção química em clima subtropical (Cwa) / Production of grapes \'Niagara Rosada\' (Vitis labrusca L.) under different frequencies of pruning and chemical protection of production diseases in subtropical climate (Cwa).

Garcia Junior, Orlando 11 November 2011 (has links)
The cultivation of grapes \'hp Niagara Rosada\' has a great economic importance in viticulture in the state of Sao Paulo, mainly in the region of Campinas, being consumed as fresh fruit in the domestic market. This cultivar can produce 10-15 tons per hectare, clusters with mass 100-300 g, with manufacturing concentrated in the months from December to February, and currently it is common to get a second harvest from the summer pruning, to yield between May-July. But to obtain two harvests every year can reduce the life and present depressive effect on the vine. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different pruning frequencies of production and chemical protection of disease in production and fruit quality. Three treatments were evaluated in the conduct of the grape trellis system: T1: pruning five in two and a half years (two cuttings per year), with treatment plant for control of grape downy mildew (Plasmopora viticola), T2: four pruning in two years and a half (1.5 cuttings per year), with treatment to control downy mildew of the vine, T3: pruning five in two and a half years (two cuttings per year), without a treatment to control downy mildew. In each production cycle were evaluated: a) number of clusters per plant, b) mass of clusters per plant in kilograms per plant, c) yield in kilograms per hectare; d) SST (° Brix) of fruits and) percentage of severity of mildew on the leaves, f) percentage of defoliation after harvest. From the third harvest there were significant differences between treatments regarding the number of bunches per plant, cluster weight, yield and total soluble solids, demonstrating a statistically positive response in treatment T2 (with n - 1 pruning, where n : number of summer pruning performed and treatment plant). The treatment plant showed significant results regarding the reduction in disease severity on leaves and reduction in defoliation after harvest.

Actions directed to preventive measures such as alternative control, are of great importance through the exploration of secondary compounds present in medicinal plants with antimicrobial activity. This study aimed to, assess the efficiency of crude extracts in the control of anthracnose in bell pepper, and analyze the control stability of promising treatments in relation to different extract, inoculum, temperature and pathogen isolates concentrations. In preliminary selection, 16 plant species were used in order to obtain aqueous and hidroalcoólico extracts. The aqueous extracts of garlic (Allium sativum L.), Mallow (Malva sp.), and ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe.) showed greater than 97% reductions in disease severity levels. The greatest value of CL75 was found for the garlic extract (3.5%), while the lowest value of CL75 was verified with the application of the ginger extract (2.1%). The lowest rate of efficiency reduction of the anthracnose control (TRE) with the pathogen inoculum increase occurred with garlic extract. With regard to different C. gloeosporioides isolates, significant interaction was found between the different extracts and isolates of the pathogen. The plant extracts were effective in controlling the disease in temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 ° C, while temperatures in the 10, 15and 35 ° C there was no disease. There were no differences in the efficiencies of garlic and ginger extracts, while the extract of hollyhock had the lower efficiency at 20 ° C, differing from the other temperatures, and other extracts at this temperature. The results obtained in this study indicate the great potential for use of the garlic extract (6%) in anthracnose control of bell pepper, considering its stability in different situations.

No. of bitstreams: 1 TESE REVISADA 11.pdf: 1670065 bytes, checksum: b89c59f7fd857c80bace24d161f11331 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-09-28 / Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge in asthma and health literacy of parents of children and adolescents diagnosed with the disease. Methods: A cross-sectional study that evaluated 120 children and adolescents aged between one and 17 years and their legal guardians in the city of Vit?ria / ES. The following questionnaires were applied: Brazil's Economic Classification Criteria (CCEB), Clinical Questionnaire, Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), Knowledge in Pediatric Asthma (QCAP), Short Assessment of Health Literacy for Portuguese Adults (SAHLPA-18). To evaluate the inhalation techniques, a questionnaire on theoretical inhalotherapy and practical analysis was applied. For the purpose of analyzing the understanding of the medical prescription, the type of prescription (rescue or preventive) and the understanding about the medical prescription were evaluated with the parents. Results: Most asthmatic patients (75%) do not have disease control. In the last 12 months the results showed that the controlled asthma group had the highest percentages of continuous treatment (p <0.01), with lower scores for use of oral corticosteroids (p = 0.01) and bronchodilator use (p = 0.01). In the evaluation of the level of reading of the medical prescription and understanding about the prescription and the type of treatment, the results demonstrate that the greater the control of the disease, the better the percentage of understanding on the part of those responsible. Conclusion: The difficulty of control is a relevant problem in the management of children with asthma. Parents of children with controlled asthma demonstrate a higher level of knowledge about health and asthma, as well as having a better understanding about medical prescription, treatment techniques for the disease.

The Impact of the “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” Public Health Awareness Campaign on Early Intervention Behavior

Patel, Kinjal Prabodh 25 April 2007 (has links)
Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States. Proactive adult behaviors leading to early intervention are a child’s best hope to reach their full potential. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention partnered with Porter Novelli to develop a public health campaign called “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” The goal of this campaign was to increase awareness about the early warning signs of autism to help invoke positive behaviors in parents so that children receive services at the youngest age possible. HealthStyles survey data were analyzed to assess the difference in level of autism awareness of those surveyed before the campaign launch and of those surveyed two years post-campaign launch. Association between awareness of autism and early intervention behavior was also examined. Results of the study show improvements in awareness of autism issues; however, the results indicate minimal association between awareness and early intervention behavior. Further research efforts are essential to modify the campaign and target the issues necessary to instigate early intervention behavior.

Promoting Older Adults' Health through Policy

Buckmaster, Pamela L 15 May 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this capstone project was to develop the content for an online training module entitled Promoting Older Adults’ Health through Policy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Aging and Health Work Group was interested in complementing their workshop, Promoting Older Adults’ Health: Opportunities and Resources for CDC Professionals with an online training module on aging and policy. This project highlights significant pieces of U.S. legislation that promotes older adults’ health and draws attention to emerging policy, systems, and environmental changes on the horizon. An anticipated short-term outcome is a demonstrated sensitivity to population aging in all CDC centers, divisions, programs, and initiatives. Similarly, an anticipated long-term outcome is growth in the number, quality, and scope of collaborative efforts across CDC centers, divisions, programs, and initiatives that focus on older adults’ health. Two perspectives, “Healthy Aging” and “Successful Aging,” provide the foundation for a discussion of legislation and policies oriented towards older adults’ health. Various policy frameworks, i.e., cost-benefit, problem, political, vision, and a futures policy approach frame the discussion of policy development. Significant legislation that promotes older adults’ health, i.e., Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Older Americans Act of 1965 provide a historical context for a discussion of emerging policy, systems, and environmental changes that promise even greater advances. The mobility challenge for older adults as a population group in the U.S. provides the thematic thrust of this section of the module. Examples of CDC’s work exploring the link between older adults’ health and mobility, the built environment, and emergency preparedness are highlighted based on several criteria: burden of the problem, preventability, relationship to other CDC initiatives, and usefulness to practitioners are critical considerations. The module also discusses how legislation and policies designed to promote health aging also improve the quality of life for all population groups. Policies focused on healthy aging lay the groundwork for an integration of a “health in all policies” approach (World Health Organization/ WHO, 2006), working in tandem with the “health for all” framework (WHO, 1998) and the “society for all ages” construct (United Nations, 1999).

The Social Context of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Control in Texas: Foundations for Effective Risk Communication

Delgado, Amy Haley 2011 December 1900 (has links)
The introduction of FMD into the US would have serious economic and societal effects on the livelihoods and sustainability of affected livestock producers. Livestock producers serve as an important line of defense in both detecting an introduction of FMD as well, helping to prevent disease spread. However, due to the complexity of moral, social, and economic issues surrounding the control of highly contagious diseases, producer cooperation during an outbreak may not be assured. This study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, including qualitative analysis of interviews and quantitative analysis of a postal survey, in order to explore the factors likely to influence producer cooperation in FMD detection and control in Texas. Reporting of cattle with clinical signs of FMD in the absence of an outbreak was related to producers´ beliefs about the consequences of reporting, beliefs about what other producers would do, trust in agricultural agencies, and their perception of the risk posed by FMD. During a hypothetical outbreak, intentions to report were determined by beliefs about the consequences of reporting, and perception of the risk posed by FMD. Intentions to gather and hold cattle when requested during an outbreak were determined by beliefs about the consequences of gathering and holding, beliefs about barriers to gathering and holding, trust in other producers, and perception of the risk posed by FMD. Compliance with animal movement restrictions was determined by experiential attitudes, beliefs about the availability of feed, space, and disinfection procedures, beliefs about what other producers would do, and perception of the risk posed by FMD. Recommendations for improving producer cooperation include targeting specific beliefs in both planning and communication, increasing transparency in the post-reporting process, planning for and communicating plans for maintaining business continuity in order to better inform risk perception, and partnering with organizations to ensure sustained and meaningful communication that supports trust between producers within the affected agricultural community.
