Article Omission and Overuse: Syntax and Semantics of the English Article System in Interlanguage Grammar

This thesis examines ungrammatical article omission, and overuse of the definite article 'the' in indefinite specific context by Japanese learners of English. This is an area of English grammar that has been considered a major problem for L2 learners (e.g. Ionin, Ko & Wexler, 2004; R. Hawkins et al., 2005, 2006; Trenkic, 2007). The thesis extends the analysis of Japanese learners' interlanguage to the overuse of 'a' in indefinite specific mass contexts by these learners. A detailed analysis of DP structures in Japanese and English leads to the conclusion that Japanese learners, through their L1, are equipped with the linguistic features which map onto articles in English, even though Japanese lacks articles. The thesis examines the syntactic role of articles in rendering predicative nouns argumental (e.g. Chierchia, 1998; Longobardi, 1994) and explores the definiteness contrast marked by 'the' as opposed to 'a/ø' with singular count nouns and mass nouns (e.g. J. Hawkins, 1978) at the semantic level. Count/mass distinctions are also examined in detail (e.g. Doetjes, 1997; Jackendoff, 1992) because the 'a' versus 'Ø' contrast clearly relates this distinction. This thesis argues that, despite its lack of articles, the Japanese grammar expresses definiteness and count/mass distinctions through its classifier system. For example, different orderings of the constituents in a classifier phrase induce different interpretations as to definiteness (e.g. Kakegawa, 2004). Further, the thesis shows that some classifiers are incompatible with mass nouns, thus argue that in Japanese, as in English, nouns are associated with the features which underlie the count/mass distinction. Thus, the difficulty that Japanese learners display in mastering the grammar of articles in English is attributed to difficulties in the mapping between their syntactic and semantic underlying knowledge and the surface forms (e.g. Lardiere, 1998) rather than to the need to acquire new features or categories of syntactic or semantic knowledge as the Representational Deficit Hypothesis (R. Hawkins, 2005) claims. This proposal differs from the previous studies that assume that the relevant syntactic category is not present in the learners’ L1 thus not acquirable in the L2 (R. Hawkins et al., 2005; Trenkic, 2007). It also differs from those that suggest that, even when the learners’ L1 does not overtly realize these features (Ionin et al., 2004), the semantic features are available through universal grammar (UG). In order to examine how Japanese learners map syntactic and semantic knowledge onto the surface forms of articles in their English, data were collected via an oral production task and two types of grammaticality judgment tasks. An online judgment task was used to gather evidence for an intuitive type of knowledge of the constraints on article use, while an offline judgment task examined conscious metalinguistic knowledge of articles. Because L2 learners tend to construct and apply various metalinguistic rules as to the use of articles (Goto-Butler, 2002), the examination of both intuitive and conscious knowledge is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the development of the article system in interlanguage grammar. Sociologia e cinema: uma anÃlise da conformaÃÃo dos gostos dos pÃblicos do cineteatro SÃo Luiz e Cinema do DragÃo

nÃo hà / The hereby research is located within the area of Sociology of Culture and consists of analyzing the development of the current tastes in the cinematographic consumption in the city of Fortaleza, CearÃ, based on the audience of two venues, namely: Cineteatro SÃo Luiz (which screens a wide range of movies, including productions acclaimed by the general audience and alternative ones) and Cinema do DragÃo (which screens movies apart from the mainstream circuit). In this sense, social determinants responsible for the construction of tastes and preferences for certain film productions in the aforementioned movie theaters were examined. Therefore, general profiles are drawn between the audiences and their practices by the use of questionnaires. Subsequently, interviews and field observations on the spot served as complementary methods for understanding the differences between audiences. From this, some aspects of the viewers were taken into consideration, such as age groups, housing and educational level. The growing urbanization, the expansion of cultural industries and the formation and consolidation of movie theaters in Fortaleza were analyzed in the process of understanding these audiences and the aforementioned movie theaters. This consolidation is immersed in the consequences and transformations carried out in the contemporary world. Thus understanding how people attending the aforesaid venues develop their tastes regarding movies helps perceive possible distinctions among audiences, thereby contributing to the understanding of cultural practices related to movie theaters in Fortaleza. For this purpose, the theoretical basis of this work finds its general orientation in the Sociology of Culture and in the analyses on taste and consumption. / A proposta de investigaÃÃo desta pesquisa situa-se dentro da Ãrea da Sociologia da Cultura e consiste em analisar a conformaÃÃo dos gostos existentes a partir do consumo cultural cinematogrÃfico na cidade de Fortaleza, no CearÃ, tendo como recorte empÃrico o pÃblico de dois espaÃos especÃficos: o Cineteatro SÃo Luiz (com programaÃÃo variada entre filmes consagrados pelo grande pÃblico a produÃÃes cults e alternativas) e o Cinema do DragÃo (possuindo uma programaÃÃo que foge ao cenÃrio mainstream). SÃo investigados os condicionantes sociais responsÃveis pela construÃÃo do gosto e de preferÃncias por determinadas produÃÃes fÃlmicas nos cinemas explicitados. Portanto, sÃo traÃados perfis gerais entre os pÃblicos e suas prÃticas, mediante a utilizaÃÃo de questionÃrios. Posteriormente, as entrevistas e as observaÃÃes de campo in loco funcionaram como mÃtodos complementares para a compreensÃo das diferenÃas entre os pÃblicos. A partir disso, foram considerados alguns aspectos dos espectadores como faixas etÃrias, moradias e grau de instruÃÃo. No processo de compreensÃo desses pÃblicos e dos cinemas elencados, analisou- se a crescente urbanizaÃÃo, a expansÃo das indÃstrias culturais e a formaÃÃo e consolidaÃÃo do cinema em Fortaleza. Esta consolidaÃÃo encontra-se imersa nas consequÃncias e transformaÃÃes operadas na contemporaneidade. Assim, entender como as pessoas frequentadoras dos cines especificados desenvolvem seus gostos referentes ao cinema ajuda na compreensÃo de possÃveis distinÃÃes entre os pÃblicos, contribuindo, desse modo, para a o entendimento das prÃticas culturais vinculadas Ãs salas de exibiÃÃes de filmes em Fortaleza. Para tanto, a base teÃrica deste trabalho encontra na Sociologia da Cultura e nas anÃlises sobre gosto e consumo sua orientaÃÃo geral.

''No Earthly Distinctions": Irishness and Identity in 19th C. Ontario, 1823-1900

<p> The historiography surrounding the Irish in Canada has generally adopted an American framework that has equated Irishness with Catholicism, thereby creating a very one dimensional picture of what it meant to be Irish in nineteenth century 'Amerikey'. Although historians have shown that the greatest emigrant outpouring for this period was not only an Irish one, but also a Protestant one, relatively little has been done to understand that group on its own terms. Where solid work does exist on Irish Protestant groups in Canada, rarely does one hear them speak in their own words. Rather, where and how quickly they settled, the singular importance of kin networks and the peculiarity of certain institutions is detailed. Little has been done with respect to understanding Irish Protestant identity: how they viewed their new world upon arrival and more importantly, how they would now and later view themselves. Indeed, the question 'Whatever Happened to the Irish?' was answered: Irish Protestants despite the strength of their numbers and their institutions, simply acculturated willingly and quickly into a larger, more encompassing 'British' identity. The assumption has followed that Irish Protestants were never very Irish in the first place. On the contrary, this thesis argues that far from simply fading away, a recognizably Irish Protestant culture - one that identified itself as the Irish nation - overcame early nineteenth century prejudice against 'things Irish' and eventually came to predominate many a local landscape in Ontario. Relying heavily on emigrant letters, this thesis emphasizes an Irish Protestant discourse that enjoyed a distinction and longevity that has yet to be recognized. It also maintains that Irish Catholicism was an integral component to the expression of that identity. En nous intéressant aux facteurs qui incitent les individus à devenir chef-fe-s d’entreprise, nous avons analysé le sens qu’ils donnent à l’acte d’entreprendre ainsi que les divers leviers mobilisés pour mener à bien leur projet entrepreneurial. Le propre du travail indépendant est de disposer d’un patrimoine productif transmissible aux générations à venir : l’entreprise. Or, notre recherche montre que l’héritage relatif à l’indépendance professionnelle est multiforme. Pour autant, nous montrons qu’il s’agit toujours d’une place à transmettre. En comparant les trajectoires d’héritier-e-s de l’entreprise familiale, d’héritier-e-s de l’indépendance et de chef-fe-s d’entreprise sans ascendant entrepreneur, nous avons mis en perspective la distinction de sexes opérante dans la famille concernant le patrimoine. En effet, la transmission du patrimoine n’emprunte pas les mêmes canaux pour les filles et les garçons de la fratrie. En somme, cette thèse revient sur l’influence de la transmission familiale sur les trajectoires des entrepreneur-e-s. Les manières d’appréhender le travail, l’entreprise, la vie conjugale et la famille à l’aune de cette dernière ainsi que les représentations qui s’y attachent dépendent des modalités de transmission familiale relatives à l’indépendance et plus précisément de la transmission d’une place professionnelle - de successeur-e, d’indépendant-e - ou non. / In this work, we focus on factors that made some people become business leaders. We analyze how they understand the entrepreneurship and what are the levers used to manage their entrepreneurial projects. The fundamental aspect of self-employment is to have productive assets and a business that you can pass down to the next generations. However, we will show that professionnal inheritance can be multiform even if, in any case, it is about a place to transfer. We compare trajectories of family business inheritors, self-employed inheritors and business leaders without business ancestors and put the difference between genders that occurs in the family about inheritance into perspective. Indeed, inheritance turns out to be different between daughters and sons.

Art-based methods in management education

The purpose of this dissertation is to develop explanatory theory for the learning processes facilitated by art-based methods in management education (ABMs). Such theory is important because managerial educators increasingly use ABMs, and without a well-developed theory it may be difficult to realise these methods’ full potential. Current research on ABMs uses theories from other fields but generally sees ABMs as methods for making important information available for reflection, e.g. information about unconscious assumptions, aesthetic experience, or non-propositional or tacit knowledge. This shows that the field is grounded in a representationalist view of cognition. This view of cognition makes it difficult to explain certain themes in the research field, such as, the importance of staying with the senses without reflecting, aesthetic agency, and the process of making. I therefore asked: What insights can be gained from exploring ABMs, using theories grounded in the embodied view of cognition, in particular Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) (Lakoff & Johnson, 1999) and simulation theories (Barsalou, 2008). For the empirical work, I used an experimental design with 60 managers from Danish companies. All participants selected problems from their work they perceived as important, yet unsolvable. They were randomly divided into three groups: Two groups using different ABMs to address problems and a comparison group where no ABM was used. The experiment indicated that 1) creating new metaphors for a problem based on different sensory metaphors enabled the participants to import behaviour from contexts unrelated to the problematic situation, and 2) focusing on sensory experience enabled participants to remove judgments about self or others. Furthermore, the experiment indicated that learning outcomes reflected participants’ experience of the concrete learning intervention. These findings contribute to CMT by suggesting that it is possible to formulate relationships between changes in metaphors and specific learning outcomes. They contribute to ABM by suggesting that experiences that participants have during ABMs are later used as tools for structuring other experiences – not merely as data for reflection.

The aim of this study is to analyse the importance of social factors and so­cial relations around food preparation. Methods used: a questionnaire, a food diary kept by the person(s) respon­sible for food preparation in the family and a number of interviews. 348 families from the counties of Uppsala and Umeå with at least one child un­der 18 years of age filled in the formulas. The kitchen is a working-place where women dominate as workers. Class has a considerable effect on patterns of meals, on methods used for food preparation and on the choice of food and dishes. The division of la­bour is auso effected, members of the family are more involved in the pro­cess of food preparation when the mother is a higher non-manual employee or self-employed. Distinctions revealed when reading the diaries with Bourdieu's con­ceptions in mind were of three kinds. One dimension is geografical, an other dimension is that of age. The third dimension is class. Upper-class families distinguished themselves by using more extras and more elaborate ways of labelling the gravy, the vegetables, the dishes themselves. They also had more alcohol with the dinner. Still another dimension is the gen­der power system. The results from the interviews revealed two patterns. One is that women express in various ways that there are conflicting goals involved, hard to cope with satisfactorily.
