An analysis of divergence in selected Northern Sotho/ English bilingual dictionaries

Makwala, Matlala Rivonia January 2020 (has links)
Thesis ( M.A. (Translation Studies and Linguistics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / Bilingual dictionaries often do not meet the needs of dictionary users because they contain information that is not well presented. This poses as a challenge to the users because they end up retrieving the wrong information. Divergence is one of the most important equivalent relation in bilingual dictionaries and lexicographers often take it for granted. This study analyses the presentation of divergence in selected Northern Sotho/English bilingual dictionaries with reference to Pharos Popular Northern Sotho Dictionary and Oxford Northern Sotho/English Bilingual Dictionary. This study further analyses the use of structural markers in bilingual dictionaries because the correct/incorrect use of structural markers also have an impact on the presentation of divergence. This study reveal that bilingual dictionaries can become user-friendly and meet the needs of the users if lexicographers can apply appropriate strategies when compiling dictionaries as this will lead to communicative success

Predikce vývoje pohybu kurzu na forexu / Prediction of Exchange Rate Movements on Forex

Balog, Miroslav January 2015 (has links)
The thesis deals with the possibility of prediction of the exchange rate on forex. The combination of Elliott wave principle and Fibonacci numbers examines to what extent and in what time periods it is possible to predict exchange rate. The thesis use fundamental analysis and MACD oscillator to confirm the accuracy of this prediction.

Robust Experimental Design for Speech Analysis Applications

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: In many biological research studies, including speech analysis, clinical research, and prediction studies, the validity of the study is dependent on the effectiveness of the training data set to represent the target population. For example, in speech analysis, if one is performing emotion classification based on speech, the performance of the classifier is mainly dependent on the number and quality of the training data set. For small sample sizes and unbalanced data, classifiers developed in this context may be focusing on the differences in the training data set rather than emotion (e.g., focusing on gender, age, and dialect). This thesis evaluates several sampling methods and a non-parametric approach to sample sizes required to minimize the effect of these nuisance variables on classification performance. This work specifically focused on speech analysis applications, and hence the work was done with speech features like Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Filter Bank Cepstral Coefficients (FBCC). The non-parametric divergence (D_p divergence) measure was used to study the difference between different sampling schemes (Stratified and Multistage sampling) and the changes due to the sentence types in the sampling set for the process. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Electrical Engineering 2020

Divergence zpěvu filipínských bulbulů (Pycnonotidae) na ostrovech / Song divergence of Philippine bulbuls (Pycnonotidae) on islands

Rulfová, Alena January 2014 (has links)
Bulbuls (Pycnonotidae) are a biologically diverse group of songbirds that produce a variety of vocalisations. Their songs are very audible, yet the vocal behaviour of the majority of bulbul species has not been formally described or subject to bioacoustical study. The Philippine bulbul (Ixos philippinus) is a sedentary and endemic species of the Philippine archipelago. This thesis presents the first detailed descriptions of its song. The songs were recorded on five islands locations that covered eight different habitats. Nine song features of these species were compared, in order to understand song variations between different islands. In searching for correlations, habitat types and geographical distances between the islands were also measured. The songs of the species found on five islands were readily split up into three groups based on end frequency, syllable number and song duration. The correlations possibly relate to a late Pleistocene connection between the islands and colonization routes of the species. It was found that song frequency parameters in bulbul species is primarily affected by habitat, whilst the effect of current distances between islands was shown to be weak.

Vliv finanční krize na konvergenci regionů Spolkové republiky Německo

Konvalinová, Vendula January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the impacts of financial and economic crisis on thirty-eight NUTS 2 regions of Germany. This includes identifying trends in regional convergence/divergence for the reference period 2004-2013 and determining the probable cause of observed disparities. For this purpose, cluster analysis and beta-convergence analysis are applied and conducted for the periods before and at the start of the financial crisis and during the outbreak of the economic crisis and after its overcoming. The impacts of the crisis on economic development of each region are also investigated by using important macroeconomic indicators.

Dopady ekonomické krize na autonomní společenství Španělska

Skyvová, Barbora January 2017 (has links)
SKYVOVÁ, BARBORA. Consequences of Economic Crisis on autonomous communities and cities in Spain. Diploma thesis. Brno: Mendel University, 2017. The diploma thesis focuses on impacts of the economic crisis (2008-2009) on seventeen autonomous communities and two autonomous cities of Spain. beta-convergence analysis and cluster analysis are applied to identify convergence or divergence process among Spanish regions within periods 2000-2007 and 2008-2015. Differences among regions are found out and economic situation is defined by macroeconomic indicators.

Moderní dystopie a současná západní společnost / Modern Dystopia and Contemporary Western Society

Macháček, Jiří January 2016 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze how the contemporary western society is reflected in the modern dystopian works' perspective. Key problems and aspects defining today's western society, e.g. consumerism and the role of science and technology, are specified in the introductory part of the thesis. The next part concerns with dystopian creation. Firstly there is focus on dystopian genre characteristics and its roots and typology. Secondly there is introduced a triad of classical dystopian works' representatives: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Every work is shortly introduced with its synopsis in the beginning and key features of described visions of society follow afterwards. Then the thesis speaks about chosen modern dystopian works' representatives in detail: The Matrix by the Wachowskis, Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Divergent by Veronica Roth. After the synopsis summary of each there is an analysis of key features, a comparison with classical dystopias and a search for parallels in the contemporary western society. Questions how modern dystopias reflect modern society and how they correlate with classical dystopias and expert literature concerning contemporary social phenomena are answered in the conclusion of the thesis.

Convex regression and its extensions to learning a Bregman divergence and difference of convex functions

Siahkamari, Ali 26 January 2022 (has links)
Nonparametric convex regression has been extensively studied over the last two decades. It has been shown any Lipschitz convex function can be approximated with arbitrarily accuracy with a max of linear functions. Using this framework, in this thesis we generalize convex regression to learning an arbitrary Bregman divergence and learning a difference of convex functions. We provide approximation guarantees and sample complexity bounds for both these extensions. Furthermore, we provide algorithms to solve the resulting optimization problems based on 2-block alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM). For this algorithm, we provide convergence guarantees with iteration complexity of O(n√d/𝜖) for a dataset X 𝝐 ℝ^n,d and arbitrary positive 𝜖. Finally we provide experiments for both the Bregman divergence learning and difference of convex functions learning based on UCI datasets that demonstrate the state of the art on regression and classification datasets.

Odhady diskrétního rozložení pravděpodobnosti a bootstrap / Estimation of Discrete Probability Distribution and Bootstrap

Lacinová, Veronika January 2015 (has links)
Doctoral thesis is focused on the unconventional methods of the discrete probability estimation of categorical quantity from its observed values. The gradient of quasinorm and so-called line estimation were emlopyed for these estimations. Bootstrap method was used for the improvement of accuracy. Theoretical results for selected quasinorms were illustrated on specific examples.
