In this regard, the study shows that the role of translation equivalence cannot be taken for granted. To fully grasp what translation equivalence entails, the study compared formal equivalence with dynamic equivalence. Although there are merits in adopting foreign terms and concepts, the study investigates the problem lexicographers and terminologists of English–Northern Sotho or Northern Sotho–English bilingual dictionaries encounter and suggests possible solutions. Different strategies and procedures for dealing with non-equivalence between the source and target languages are also discussed. Lastly, the study recommends that language dynamism is inevitable if Northern Sotho is to thrive as one of the functional languages in the world. The consequences of shunning dynamism are dire as this might lead to language death.

A critical analysis of the role of translation in lexicography with reference to English-Tshivenda bilingual dictionaries

Thesis (Ph.D.) --University of Limpopo, 2016. / Lack of properly translated Tshivenḓa-English dictionaries is a great challenge to dictionary users. In an attempt to address this challenge or problem, linguistic approach has been employed in this study, which was conducted in Vhembe District in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. This study critically analyses the role of translation in lexicography with special reference to selected Tshivenḓa-/English bilingual dictionaries. The selected dictionaries are: Tshikota’s (2006) Tshivenḓa/English Ṱhalusamaipfi Dictionary and Van Warmelo’s (1989) Venḓa Dictionary. The aim of this study was to examine the role of translation in lexicography with special reference to Tshivenḓa-English dictionaries. This study utilised a qualitative technique to collect the data and interviews were conducted with lexicographers, university lecturers, language practitioners, Tshivenḓa grade 12 educators and court interpreters. Data were analysed based on different answers from different questions posed to different respondents. The study showed that people who compile dictionaries and do translation, do not have proper background in translation. In addition, some of the people are not fluent in both the source and the target languages. It is recommended that in order to produce user-friendly dictionaries, compilers and translators should get a proper training in translation. In addition, translators should be fluent in both the source and target languages. Finally, school books (including prescribed and content books), should be translated in order to provide effective teaching and learning.

The role of microstructure, with reference to English and Northern Sotho-English dictionaries: A comparative lexicographic analysis

Thesis (M.A. (African Languages)) --University of Limpopo, 2010 / This study is a comparative analysis of two English monolingual dictionaries and two Northern Sotho – English bilingual dictionaries, namely Concise Oxford English Dictionary(2006), Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (2006), Pharos Popular Northern Sotho Dictionary (1995) and Sesotho Sa Leboa – English Pukuntšu Dictionary (2006). The above four dictionaries are compared in terms of cross – referencing, pronunciation and parts of speech. The microstructure of certain dictionaries does not address most problems that dictionary users have. It is in the microstructure, where dictionary users learn that certain lemmata are synonymous, polysemous in sense, antonyms or that a lemma has two alternative spellings, and that both spelling are acceptable. This is done through cross –referencing. Dictionary users need to be guided on how lemmata are pronounced, otherwise the meaning of lemmata become distorted. The other problem which the microstructure has to deal with, is to indicate the type of parts of speech lemmata are. This research is an attempt to make lexicographers aware of the importance of including the above aspects in the microstructure of their dictionaries.

A model to achieve communicative equivalence in translation dictionaries

This impedes the users from retrieving the required information. Communicative equivalence is a relation holding between source and target language entries in translation dictionaries. A translation equivalent should not be seen as a statement about the meaning of the lemma, but it should be regarded as an item that represents the target language and can be used to translate a specific occurrence of the source language item. If semantic and communicative equivalence do not hold between the source and the target language dictionary users will not be able to use the target language successfully. Instead of achieving communicative equivalence, the dictionary user is confused and ends up using language in an unacceptable way. Relying on translation dictionaries to improve their language skills and to learn more about the target language, dictionary users often come across haphazardly arranged articles in dictionaries that do not lead to communicative equivalence. In this case, the dictionary users are confused and end up using language in an unacceptable way. This thesis explores and investigates different ways to achieve communicative equivalence in translation dictionaries. The research formulates some of the needed guidelines for the lexicographers of translation dictionaries. It intends to assist lexicographers to compile useroriented translation dictionaries that can foster multilingualism amongst the dictionary users. As a result of this research, lexicographers will be able to compile translation dictionaries that will assist dictionary users to achieve communicative success. These dictionaries will establish semantic and communicative resemblance between the source and the target language forms. As a lexicographic problem, communicative equivalence is being addressed in the thesis and the researcher aims to make lexicographers aware of the mistakes in translation dictionaries. The objective of the thesis is to help lexicographers with the compilation of dictionaries where the users can achieve an optimal retrieval of information. The research focuses on metalexicographic issues in order to enhance the quality of practical lexicography. By doing so both the practical and theoretical lexicography can benefit from this research. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Tweetalige woordeboeke voldoen dikwels nie aan die behoeftes van hulle gebruikers nie omdat hulle Onbeperkte aantal artikels bevat met absolute ekwivalensie tussen bron- en doeltaal. Dit weerhou die gebruikers daarvan om die verlangde inligting te onttrek. Kommunikatiewe ekwivalensie is onverhouding tussen die bron- en doeltaalinskrywings in vertalende woordeboeke. OnVertaalekwivalent moet nie beskou word as Onuitspraak oor die betekenis van die lemma nie maar dit moet gesien word as Onitem wat die doeltaal verteenwoordig en wat gebruik kan word om onbepaalde optrede van die brontaalvorm te vertaal. As semantiese en kommunikatiewe ekwivalensie nie tussen bron- en doeltaal bestaan nie sal woordeboekgebruikers nie daartoe in staat wees om die doeltaal suksesvol te gebruik nie. In stede daarvan om kommunikatiewe ekwivalensie te behaal, is die gebruiker verward en gebruik hy taal op Ononaanvaarbare manier. As gevolg van hierdie navorsing sal leksikograwe daartoe in staat wees om vertalende woordeboeke saam te stel wat gebruikers kan help om kommunikatiewe ekwivalensie te bereik. Hierdie woordeboeke salon semantiese en kommunikatiewe ooreenkoms tussen bron- en doeltaalvorme vestig. In hierdie tesis word kommunikatiewe ekwivalensie as Onleksikografiese probleem behandel en die navorser poog om leksikograwe bewus te maak van foute in vertalende woordeboeke. Die mikpunt van hierdie tesis is om leksikograwe te help met die samestelling van woordeboeke waar gebruikers onoptimale inligtingsherwinning kan behaal. Die behandeling van zero-ekwivalensie in tweetalige woordeboeke

Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In lexicography different types of equivalent relations can be identified regarding bilingual dictionaries namely full equivalence, partial equivalence and zero equivalence. Zero equivalence prevails where the target language has no item to be co-coordinated as a translation equivalent with a lemma representing a source language item. Lexical gaps occur where a language lacks a word for a given concept. Dagut (1981) identifies different types of semantic gaps in the transfer of a text from one language to another. He distinguishes between gaps due to linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. These two categories are called linguistic and referential gaps respectively. A solution for the above mentioned lexicographic problem is given in the present theory of zero equivalence namely surrogate equivalents. The present theory of zero equivalence is expanded in this thesis by making specific reference to its occurrence in Pharos (2005). Different factors that lead to zero-equivalence are discussed and these factors are used to identify different types of zero equivalence. These types of zero equivalence are the following: zero equivalence caused by linguistic and referential gaps as well as grammatical zero equivalence and partial zero equivalence. In a multilingual society like South Africa where many different culture groups exist and people are encouraged to learn an additional language many different types of bilingual dictionaries are needed. When two languages are compared with each other during the compilation of a bilingual dictionary the lexicographer will always be confronted with zero equivalence, especially when the users of the two languages have vastly different cultures. Thus it is necessary to expand on the present theory of zero equivalence within the South African context. In the last section of the thesis the different options at the lexicographer‟s disposal in dealing with the different types of zero equivalence are discussed. Another aspect that gets attention throughout this thesis is the dictionary users of certain dictionaries, among others Pharos (2005), and their specific needs. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In die leksikografie word daar tussen verskillende ekwivalentverhoudinge wat in tweetalige woordeboeke voorkom, onderskei, naamlik absolute ekwivalensie, gedeeltelike ekwivalensie en zero-ekwivalensie. Zero-ekwivalensie ontstaan wanneer die doeltaal nie ‟n item het wat as ‟n vertaalekwivalent gekoördineer kan word met ‟n lemma van die brontaal nie. Leksikale gapings kom voor wanneer ‟n taal nie ‟n woord vir ‟n spesifieke konsep het nie. Dagut (1981) identifiseer verskillende semantiese gapings na aanleiding van linguistiese en ekstra-linguistiese faktore. Hierdie twee kategorieë staan afsonderlik as linguistiese en referensiële gapings bekend. ‟n Oplossing vir dié leksikografiese probleem is surrogaatekwivalente, wat in die bestaande teorie van zero-ekwivalensie aanbeveel word. Hierdie tesis brei uit op die bestaande teorie van zero-ekwivalensie in die leksikografie deur onder andere spesifiek na die hantering daarvan in Pharos (2005) te verwys. Daar word aandag geskenk aan die verskillende faktore wat aanleiding tot die verskynsel van zero-ekwivalensie gee. Op grond van hierdie faktore word verskillende tipes zero-ekwivalensie geïdentifiseer; naamlik zero-ekwivalensie wat as gevolg van linguistiese of referensiële gapings ontstaan asook grammatiese zero-ekwivalensie en gedeeltelike zero-ekwivalensie. In ‟n meertalige gemeenskap soos Suid-Afrika waar daar verskeie kultuurgroepe voorkom en mense aangemoedig word om ‟n addisionele taal aan te leer, word verskeie soorte tweetalige woordeboeke benodig. Wanneer enige twee tale vergelyk word, word die leksikograaf met zero-ekwivalensie gekonfronteer veral wanneer die taalpaar wat in die tweetalige woordeboek aan bod kom wat kultuur betref uitermate van mekaar verskil. Dit is dus nodig om binne die Suid-Afrikaanse konteks die teorie van zero-ekwivalensie uit te brei. Daar word in die laaste afdeling van hierdie tesis aandag geskenk aan die verskillende opsies wat die leksikograaf tot sy beskikking het om die verskillende tipes zero-ekwivalensie te hanteer. Nog ‟n aspek wat deurgaans aandag geniet, is die gebruikers van spesifieke woordeboeke, byvoorbeeld Pharos (2005), en die behoeftes van dié gebruikers.

A lingüística de corpus a serviço do tradutor: proposta de um dicionário de culinária voltado para a produção textual / Corpus linguistics at the translator\'s service: proposal of an online dictionary of culinary aiming at text production

Os dicionários sempre foram e ainda são uma das principais ferramentas da tarefa tradutória. No entanto, a terminografia parece não ter se beneficiado ainda de forma sistemática, pelo menos no Brasil, da estreita relação entre dicionários técnicos e esse público-alvo específico e cada vez mais expressivo: os tradutores técnicos. Na área da Culinária, por exemplo, cuja demanda por traduções tem crescido regularmente no país, os dicionários disponíveis no par de línguas inglês-português, ainda que possam contribuir para a compreensão do texto original, não dão qualquer informação sobre como os termos são, de fato, usados em textos reais na área, ou seja, não auxiliam o tradutor numa etapa fundamental da atividade tradutória: a produção textual na língua de chegada. Nossa tese é a de que um dicionário que procure atender as necessidades de produção textual do tradutor deve concentrar-se nos aspectos que caracterizam o texto técnico do ponto de vista da tradução, isto é, deve descrever e propor equivalentes ou soluções tradutórias para as Unidades de Tradução Especializadas (UTEs) presentes nesses textos, com as quais o tradutor da área se depara freqüentemente em sua prática, sejam elas terminológicas ou não. A Lingüística de Corpus (L.C.), abordagem empirista que vê a língua como um sistema probabilístico, tem se dedicado à identificação de padrões léxico-gramaticais recorrentes na linguagem por meio da observação de textos autênticos organizados sob a forma de corpora eletrônicos. É, portanto, a área de estudos que julgamos fornecer os subsídios teóricos e metodológicos mais adequados para compilar as UTEs a partir de textos reais. Para abrigar essas unidades, apresentamos uma proposta de dicionário online bidirecional inglês-português voltado para o tradutor da área técnica da Culinária. As etapas seguidas no desenvolvimento deste trabalho estão organizadas em seis capítulos. O primeiro trata de aspectos teórico-práticos da tradução técnica e discute o papel da terminologia na prática tradutória. O segundo examina as especificidades do trabalho do tradutor da área da Culinária no Brasil e caracteriza a receita culinária , foco de nosso estudo, como gênero e tipologia textual. No terceiro capítulo, as bases teóricas e metodológicas da L.C. são apresentadas, bem como os critérios de coleta do corpus que servirá de base para a identificação das UTEs. O Capítulo IV descreve a etapa de exploração desse corpus: primeiramente, apresentamos o estudo em que é feito um levantamento manual de padrões léxicogramaticais usando o programa WordSmith Tools; em seguida, descrevemos uma metodologia de extração semi-automática de UTEs no corpus. O Capítulo V apresenta nossa proposta do Dicionário Online de Culinária bidirecional para Tradutores, descrevendo sua macro- e microestrutura. O Capítulo VI apresenta nossas considerações finais. Os resultados obtidos em nosso trabalho demonstram que a L.C., se usada não apenas como metodologia, mas como abordagem teórica na exploração de corpora especializados, permite elaborar dicionários mais úteis e confiáveis para o tradutor, pois leva em consideração quaisquer padrões associativos entre palavras cuja probabilidade de ocorrer em textos representativos da área seja alta fato que justifica plenamente a inclusão desses padrões num dicionário voltado para o tradutor-produtorde- textos. / Dictionaries have always been and still are one of the main tools for the translator s task. Nevertheless, terminography does not seem to have systematically benefited, at least in Brazil, from the close relation between technical dictionaries and this increasingly significant and particular target audience: technical translators. In the field of Culinary, for instance, which has witnessed a growing demand for translations in Brazil, much as the dictionaries available for the English-Portuguese language pair may contribute to the understanding of the source text, they still do not provide any information on how the terms are actually used in real texts. In other words, they do not help the translator in a crucial step of the translation activity: text production in the target language. The thesis advanced here is that a dictionary which seeks to meet the needs of a translator s text production should focus on the aspects which characterize technical texts from the point of view of translation itself, that is, it should describe and propose translation equivalents or suggestions for the Specialized Translation Units (STUs) occurring in these texts, which the translator in the area often comes across in her/his practice, whether they are terminological or not. Corpus Linguistics (CL), an empirical approach which regards language as a probabilistic system, has devoted itself to the identification of recurring lexico-grammatical patterns in language by observing authentic texts organized as electronic corpora. It is, therefore, the field of studies we deem capable of providing the most adequate theoretical and methodological support to extract the STUs from real texts. In order to embrace these units, a proposal of an online bidirectional English-Portuguese dictionary is presented, which is aimed at the technical Culinary translator. The steps followed in the development of this study were organized in six chapters. The first deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of technical translation and discusses the role of terminology in translation practice. The second examines the specificities of the Culinary translator s job in Brazil and characterizes the culinary recipe , the focus of this study, in terms of text genre and typology. In the third chapter, the theoretical and methodological foundations of CL are presented, as well as the criteria used in the compilation of the corpus to be used for the identification of the STUs. Chapter IV describes the exploration of this corpus: first, we present the study in which a manual search of lexico-grammatical patterns using the WordSmith Tools program is carried out; next, a methodology for semi-automatic extraction of STUs in the corpus is described. Chapter V presents our proposal for a bidirectional online Culinary Dictionary for Translators, describing its macro- and microstructure. Chapter VI contains the final considerations. The results obtained in this study bear witness to the fact that CL, if used not only as a methodology, but as a theoretical approach in the investigation of specialized corpora, enables the production of more useful and trustworthy dictionaries for the translator, for it takes into account any association patterns between words with a probability of occurrence in representative texts in the field a fact which strongly supports the inclusion of these patterns in a dictionary aimed at the translator-producer-of-texts
