Domestic Violence, A study of men's violence in close relationship

Christensen, Katherine Batenga January 2018 (has links)
The Aim of this study is to examine violence in close relationship and to explore the different explanation on men's violence as well as the factors that contribute to their violent behavior. Violence in close relationships can occur in different forms and anyone can fall as a victim of both physical and mental abuse. Violence and discrimination against women violates the principles of equal rights and respect for human dignity. In Sweden, men's violence against women and violence in close relationships is still a major problem that requires great work and attention. It is one of Sweden's responsibility to meet all people's equal values and rights and to fight violence in close relationship.

Newspaper representations of the psychological profile of domestic violence : an archival study

Mashabela, Raisibe Promise January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Psychology)) --University of Limpopo, 2015 / The aim of the study was to explore the psychological profiles of perpetrators of domestic violence as represented in newspaper articles. An archival research approach was chosen as the appropriate design for the present study. The researcher accessed and studied all newspaper articles from two daily newspapers reporting on domestic violence over a two-year period (that is, from January 2011 up to December 2012). A total of 98 newspaper articles (sixty from the Sowetan newspaper, and 38 thirty eight from the Daily Sun newspaper) covering the period under review were retrieved. The data was captured on a self-developed data record sheet. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the data. The results were analysed and presented using frequency tables, descriptive statistics and cross-tabulations. The results of the study showed that the majority of the victims of domestic violence were women with little education and skills. Assault, attempted murder and murder were found to be the forms of violence perpetrated against the victims. The majority of the perpetrators (70.4%) were males, with higher education and skills. Some of the perpetrators were represented in the newspaper articles as being emotionally troubled (69.4%), passively aggressive (11.2%), mentally disturbed (5.1%) and socially deviant (3.1%). The majority of the mental health problems that were associated with the perpetrators of domestic violence included depression, borderline personality and acute psychosis. A number of triggers were found to lead to domestic violence. These included family arguments, jealousy, substance abuse, and criminal behaviour. Based on the above results, the study is concluded by recommending anger and stress management as some of the programmes that the government could introduce to minimise domestic violence.

Domestic Violence Survivor-Offender Relationship is Related to Type of Abuse Sustained

Carpenter, Rachel K, Gretak, Alyssa P, Eisenbrandt, Lydia L, Gilley, Rebecca H, Stinson, Jill D, PhD 12 April 2019 (has links)
In the past decade, the increasing prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) and domestic violence (DV) on college and university campuses has been given considerable attention. This abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, and coercive control, often leads to impairment in victims (Ross, 2017; Straus, Gelles & Steinmetz). While the overall rates of IPV and DV have been relatively well-studied on college campuses, the differential impact of survivor-offender relationship on type of abuse has not been fully examined. As a result, there may be important correlates between survivor-offender relationship and the nature of abusive acts. Data for this project were obtained from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s online incident-based reporting system. Reported incidents of DV/IPV in 2017 were examined in the current analysis with variables divided by survivor-offender relationship and type of abuse. Survivor- offender relationship included intimate, acquaintance, stranger, and family, while types of abuse included kidnapping, incest, forcible rape and statutory rape, aggravated assault, simple assault, murder, intimidation stalking, forcible sodomy, sexual assault with an object, and forcible fondling. A preliminary χ2 16 x 4 contingency table illustrated a significant difference between survivor-offender relationship and type of abuse χ2(33) = 185.43, p <.001, with a significant difference between relationship and offense types. Further analyses indicated higher rates of simple assault in intimate relationships compared to acquaintances and forcible rape proving more evident in acquaintances compared to intimate relationships. Interestingly, intimidation was higher in African Americans acquaintances compared to Caucasian individuals’ where intimidation was more evident in intimate relationships. Further analyses will investigate specific racial and ethnic breakdowns, gender considerations, and the influence and possession of a firearm. To our knowledge, this area of research on college campuses has not examined the lethality and influence of a firearm, types of injury, and the survivor-offender relationship. Few have theorized regarding DV/IPV and survivor-offender relationship and type of abuse, but the current findings are similar to research regarding characteristics of sexual assault survivors who present to the emergency room. For example, Logan, Cole and Capillo (2007) discovered that there is a difference in injury patterns depending on the survivor-offender relationship. With domestic violence being insidiously pervasive, this topic necessitates investigation due to research suggesting there are differences in mental health outcomes based on injuries sustained, and certain assault characteristics depending on the survivor-offender relationship (Culbertson & Dehle, 2001). Implications of the current study will be further discussed.

Sjuksköterskans erfarenheter av mötet med kvinnor som varit utsatta för våld i nära relationer : En litteraturbaserad studie / The nurse´s experiences of meeting women who have been exposed to violence in close relationships

Nordling, Julia, Nordström, Pernilla January 2021 (has links)
Background: Violence against women is a global public health problem that has consequenses for the individual as well as the society. The number of women exposed to violence is assumed to have increased in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic. Many are exposed to violence in their home environment where their partner is the perpetrator. Women often avoid seeking medical care and therefore the number of unreported cases is assumed to be high. Since the nurse often is the first to come in contact with the abused woman, it is important that the nurse has the knowledge required to be able to identify the women.  Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight the nurse´s experiences of meeting women who have been exposed to violence in close relationships. Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight the nurse´s experiences of meeting women who have been exposed to violence in close relationships.   Results: The study resulted in two main themes: the nurse’s internal factors and the nurse’s external factors. Seven subthemes were designed: emotional impact, perceptions and attitudes, treatment, stress and lack of time, the nurse’s responsibility, lack of knowledge, identifying violence and a supportive environment.  Conclusion: The nurse has a responsibility to care for women exposed to violence. The results of this study showed that there is a lack of knowledge, which leads to the nurses feeling insecure in their profession. Furthermore, organizational factors as well as the nurse´s own feelings affect the work with the abused women.

Cause and Consequence of Domestic Violence of Bangladesh : An Empirical Study on Tangail Town and Mymensingh City

Islam, Minhajul January 2021 (has links)
Domestic violence is now better be addressed as a global issue rather than just a family or regional problem. This research study has focused on highlighting the factors that contribute to the ceaseless occurrence of domestic violence. Besides, it concentrates on the consequences that might take place due to the various forms of domestic violence. As domestic violence has exceeded the boundary of just being an indoor personal matter, it must be dealt with precise assistance provided by the law and judicial authorities. Women should be respected and valued by all means as well as their choices and decisions have to be prioritized by men. Even if the acts of vicious domestic violence can't be eliminated overnight, the measures aiding abolition of domestic violence ought to be taken inevitably. As a whole, we must not forget that a healthy moralistic surrounding or environment can also play a significant role to combat domestic violence.

Effectiveness of the Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction of the Tulalip Tribe

Natrall, Marie Frances 01 January 2019 (has links)
Native American women have been historically disadvantaged as victims of domestic violence. These hardships were primarily due to a policy that limited Native American tribes’ criminal jurisdiction over non-Native individuals on Native American reservations. This policy changed with the passage of the Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction (SDVCJ) in 2013. This qualitative case study employed the social construction of target populations conceptual framework to explore the experiences of tribal officials and judicial officers of the Tulalip tribe. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 9 key informants selected through purposeful sampling on the basis of their role within the Tulalip tribe’s SDVCJ. Data were sorted, organized, and coded by hand using a deductive thematic analysis to identify key themes. The key themes were leadership, protection against domestic violence, healing, accountability, training, and increased work. These conclusions may be useful to extend protection to individuals not protected under SDVCJ, which include Native American children, men, and elders who may also be victims of domestic violence.

Latentní kriminalita / Latent Criminality

Tajovská, Martina January 2020 (has links)
The thesis deals with latent criminality as a dynamic criminality phenomenon. The first chapter is dedicated to the scientific discipline of criminology, which examines criminality as a whole, criminality itself and terms which define criminality, such as scope, level, structure and dynamic. The second chapter deals directly with latent criminality. It lists all that is included in latent criminality and its relation to registered criminality. The chapter describes the possible causes and brings closer all the methods for examining it. The most common of those are victimization method and self-reporting investigation. One of the main causes of crime latency is the victim's failure to report. The third chapter is therefore dedicated to crime victims. It lists the differences between a victim and an injured party and describes the relation between victim and perpetrator. This chapter also ties to the victim's consent with prosecution, which can be influenced by the aforementioned relation to the perpetrator. In the fourth chapter, criminality is divided into individual types. Apart from definitions of the different criminality types, such as property offences, violent, moral and economic criminality, the thesis here details the statistical indicators of these criminality types (number of crimes...

Domácí násilí - komparace právní úpravy ČR a USA / Domestic violence - comparisson of Czech ane U. S. legal regulation

Levanti, Hana Marie January 2020 (has links)
Domestic violence - comparisson of Czech ane U. S. legal regulation Abstract The aim of the thesis is to introduce legal regulation of domestic violence in Czech Republic and in the United States of America including mutual comparison. The body of this thesis is divided into three main segments. The first segment defines the issue of domestic violence through characterizing its typical signs, forms and cycle. The second segment focuses on domestic violence in the Czech Republic with concise overview of the current legislation, forms of protection against domestic violence provided by the private law (especially the legislation within the Civil Code and the Act on Special Judicial Procedures). Following is the introduction to legislation on protection from domestic violence as defined in the Criminal Law. As it is not possible to subsume the phenomenon of domestic violence under a singular substance of criminal offense, the scope of this segment includes analysis of a variety of such substances that are applicable during criminal offense investigation. The characterization of these substances is based on the system of the special part of the Czech Criminal Code. Therefore, the substances of criminal offenses against human life and health are analyzed first, followed by offenses against personal freedom and...

Barns utsatthet för våld i hemmet och dess skildrande effekter i vuxen ålder / Children exposed to domestic violence experience depiction effects in their later adulthood

Mansour, Layal, Al-fahadawi, Zahra January 2020 (has links)
Violence against children indicates factors like physical, psychological, emotional or financial damage. This is also associated with the fact that children that are exposed to domestic violence, also witness violence between their parents. The concept of violence against children can be interpreted in a long or short term  and from childhood to adulthood. This perspective is associated with the perception that domestic violence affects children's health, survival development and dignity. The purpose of this study is to examine the consequences of domestic violence during their childhood. By using autobiographies it will be possible to create a greater understanding of how domestic violence is portrayed from an individual and societal perspective. This will be associated with the understanding of what consequences are created by domestic violence from the authors childhood to adulthood. Autobiographies will make it possible for the reader to get an insight into the consequences of violence from the individual himself. The issues that will be presented in the study are first, How are the consequences of violence for the child's growth during childhood  described in autobiographies and why exactly. Secondly, What support is given to children exposed to violence in social work and what difference has it made. This study also explores social work with abused children. In conjunction with the second issue of the study , we will highlight what kind of help that these individuals experienced when they needed help and what kind of difference this made for them in their adulthood.  To create an understanding for the social work with abused children, this study will highlight which interventions that are included in social work, for example call processing with foster children or even children or young people that need help to become drug free. This study's theoretical starting point has been about the attachment theory. The aim of the attachment theory was to create a greater understanding for the development of an individual at a very young age. The result of our study will be shown from an individual level of perspective. An individual level in a way where the three different authors will present their own statements and stories by their own experiences of domestic violence. The presented consequences by the impact of violence  that the authors were exposed to growing up. It shows a general result of  a stronger mindset and strive, within the authors, to build a more stable life as adults. The result of this study will also show obvious negative consequences such as mental illness, while the authors were growing up. It will also show consequences in terms of damaged social relationships, both in external relations such as friends but also in internal relations like the relationships between siblings. The authors present their stories where they show experiences of difficulties during their childhood and adolescence, struggling with their past as abused children. The results that are shown in conjunction with this studies' first question at issue are that the support measures that come from social services has not been enough in terms of help for these authors that have experienced domestic violence as children. Although, as the authors are growing up, we can state that they get stronger and somehow they have managed to use their vulnerable childhood as a momentum.

I skuggan av en pandemi : En komparativ studie av svensk- och dansk medierapportering angående våld i nära relationer under Coronapandemin 2020

Wallin Nilsson, Frida, Rosén, Malin January 2020 (has links)
This comparative study examines how the issue of domestic violence is covered and framed in the media during the Covid-19 pandemic 2020. The study compares the potential differences and similarities in the media coverage between the two neighbouring countries Sweden and Denmark. By combining a quantitative content analysis with a qualitative framing analysis the study critically examines the attributes of how domestic violence is covered and framed in the media articles during the Covid-19 pandemic 2020. In both countries the media was quick to cover this issue and has done so quite thoroughly, but even though both countries have similar political views on domestic violence and gender equality, they differed in how they framed the topic. By using the framing theory and the theory of intersectionality to analyse the material the study shows that both countries tended to frame the issue of domestic violence as a social issue that was part of a bigger structural problem. But the study also shows that some of the danish articles had tendencies to present the issue through the perspective of the perpetrator and sympathize with the reasons behind the violence. The swedish articles, on the other hand, did not take this perspective. Furthermore the study shows an exclusion of black and coloured people in their choice of pictures and the authors also tend to be white female journalists. This study is important because it highlights the media's role in framing the social issue of domestic violence during the Covid-19 pandemic, and framing in the media plays a big part in shaping society's perception about social issues.
