O teatro da escrita em Fernando Pessoa / The theater of writing in Fernando Pessoa

Corrêa, Flávio Rodrigo Vieira Lopes Penteado 13 April 2015 (has links)
This study proposes to expand the comprehension of the concept of drama in the work of Fernando Pessoa, for whom the dramatic factor would determine traces of grand literary creations, as well as of the bases of heteronymy. One of the key intentions of this dissertation is to rethink the equivalence of both terms dramatic poet and dramatist, which were constantly used by the author to make reference to his own creative process. It is stated that Pessoa would have relativized the boundaries between those terms by conceiving at least two different ways of approaching the dramatic form: on the one hand he presupposes the creation of a drama that is situated outside the dramaturgic sphere per se, which would comprise the books, including many different literary genres and a single relation between different authors that were to be compiled in his complete works; on the other hand he engages himself in the composition of dramas, in a strict sense, that escape the common places of the genre by destabilizing traditional categories such as action, dialogue, plot and characters.

The Plays of Samuel Beckett

Weiss, Katherine 01 January 2013 (has links)
Beckett remains one of the most important writers of the twentieth century whose radical experimentations in form and content won him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. This Critical Companion encompasses his plays for the stage, radio and television, and will be indispensable to students of his work. Challenging and at times perplexing, Beckett's work is represented on almost every literature, theatre and Irish studies curriculum in universities in North America, Europe and Australia. Katherine Weiss' admirably clear study of his work provides the perfect companion, illuminating each play and Beckett's vision, and investigating his experiments with the body, voice and technology. It includes in-depth studies of the major works Waiting for Godot, Endgame and Krapp's Last Tape, and as with other volumes in Methuen Drama's Critical Companions series it features too a series of essays by other scholars and practitioners offering different critical perspectives on Beckett in performance that will inform students' own critical thinking. Together with a series of resources including a chronology and a list of further reading, this is ideal for all students and readers of Beckett's work. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1072/thumbnail.jpg

A PRODUCTION PROCESS FOR DEVELOPING A WEB SERIES, SNAPTV

Caldwell, Toebey T 01 December 2017 (has links)
ABSTRACT My project for this Interdisciplinary Master’s Program, studying Film Theories and Media Production methods, details “A Production Process for Creating a Web Series, called SNAPtv”. This media production was designed to demonstrate my experience and knowledge I gained through this degree, by specific areas of developing and producing media, including script writing, filming and editing media content, to construct an original web series from Pre-Production to Post-Production. SNAPtv is a hybrid, sketch comedy, talk show produced as an online web series that mimics the characteristics of a semi-scripted Reality-Television series and combines the elements of a talk show with short comedy scenes used as segues for entertainment. This original web series SNAPtv, features the lives of four students who move into a co-ed dormitory at Cal State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). As freshmen students, they embark on a new but similar journey to achieve their academic endeavors while experiencing diversity, social and racial inequalities and situations relevant to those of college students. These issues included, the cost of an education, pressures of studying, time management and adjusting to college life. This web series will launch from within the CSUSB’s own media channel to produce the first pilot webisode for SNAPtv, titled “MOVING IN”. This project will provide a sample production packet in the form of a manuscript for the development of this web series. This project will include a completed sample production packet containing the documents necessary to create SNAPtv’s pilot webisode, including essential procedures and functions of The Production Process for developing and producing media. SNAPtv will demonstrate my current knowledge and understanding of producing media for the Entertainment Industry while outlining my production process for creating SNAPtv

Monsters From Within and Madness From Without: Manifestations of Identity Fragmentation as a Result of Postcolonialism in Filipino American Theatre

Dalsfoist, Kayla 01 April 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the way in which it is possible to undermine dominant colonial power structures through the figure of the organic intellectual. In the context of this work, the figure of the organic intellectual is the Filipino American playwright, who creates characters and worlds that expose the fragmented identities of the postcolonial condition following both Spanish and American occupation. This thesis focuses on Han Ong and Ralph Peña, two Filipino American playwrights who are well suited to the role of instigating change because they embrace the cracks and fissures brought on from years of trying to reconcile disparate identities within an often insecure self and transform those disjointed regions into something beautiful, and above all, worth examining further. By creating works that allow literal embodiment of postcolonial discourse, Filipino American playwrights are able to articulate issues and foster awareness for all involved in the production of the play, whether it be through a performative or spectatorial perspective.

La transition vers un autre théâtre jeune public : écrire, éditer et mettre en scène en Espagne de 1960 à 1978 / The transition towards a new form of theatre for young audience : writing, publishing and direction in Spain from 1960 to 1978

Arnaud, Simon 22 September 2018 (has links)
After the progress seen in spanish children’s theatre between 1920 and 1936, the arrival of the Franco dictatorship resulted in cultural activity being taken into state control. Children’s theatre became an educational tool to serve the interests of the regime, and during the 1960’s was the object of particular attention from the Ministry of Tourism and Information, which at the time was responsible of cultural affairs, and from the Sección Femenina (troupe Los Títeres , 1959 ; Asociación Española para el Teatro Infantil y Juvenil, 1966). Within the general context set by these political policies and cultural practices, this work aims to demonstrate the role played by certain dramatists, whose origins were in social realism, the Teatro Independiente and the Nuevo Teatro, in promoting a new kind of theatre for young audience. Although they did not work together in any organised way, at the similar time they all sporadically turned their attention towards a young audience. They gave witness to the element of risk inherent in any attempt to transgress aesthetic and cultural norms, and also to desire to create a new kind of theatre writing which aimed to combine awareness raising with an element of play. This thesis is written from an interdisciplinary perspective (theatre studies, literature, sociology of entertainment, cultural history, anthropology…). It brings together literary analysis and the study of historic and cultural records in order to give an account of the aesthetic, ethical an practical issues which influenced the dramatic work.

Dramaturging Contemporary Feminism(s): A Festival of New American Plays by Women

Denison, Emily E. 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In the wake of Emily Glassberg Sands' well-publicized thesis, Opening the Curtain on Playwright Gender, theater artists across the country are up in arms about the disparity that has long existed between male and female playwrights. Glassberg Sands’ audit study showed that literary managers and artistic directors rate female-authored scripts lower in terms of quality, marketability, and audience response. In addition, recent studies show that only 20% of the plays produced in American regional theaters each year have female playwrights. As a positive step towards equality, I curated and produced a festival of new American plays by women entitled Voices in Contemporary Feminism(s). It was my goal to instigate change first by staging new American plays by women and then by engaging artists and audience members alike in conversation about feminism(s) and feminist themes, female playwrights, the current position of women in American theater, and how we can change the status quo. This thesis describes in detail the impetus behind creating the festival, the planning process, and the events of the festival itself, and then draws conclusions about the role dramaturgs can play in combating gender inequity.

"Voices in My Head:" Representations of Mental Illness in Contemporary American Musical Theater

Perry, McKay 09 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
In the years since 2010, themes of mental illness on the musical theater stage have increased dramatically, most notably with the Broadway premiere of Dear Evan Hansen in 2016, which quickly became a popular and critical success, winning six Tony Awards the following season. Despite scope and reach of the modern American musical, relatively little musicological scholarship has explored this area, and of that literature, even less has examined contemporary musicals. In this thesis, I will begin to fill this gap in the literature through the application of emerging critical musicological lenses to modern musical theater, both on and off Broadway. This thesis puts forth a set of representational models to explore how mentally ill characters are represented in contemporary American musical theater. Through six case studies of twenty-first century shows employing these models, this thesis examines how these models intersect with narrative critiques and theories put forth by disability studies scholarship to analyze the representations of mentally ill characters onstage. I examine the shows Next to Normal, Be More Chill, In the Green, Preludes, Dear Evan Hansen, and Bandstand to analyze how the internal experience of mental illness is externalized and shown onstage in each of these shows, evaluate which underlying narratives and ideas about mental illness that these representational models contain, and investigate how ideas from disability studies scholarship can illuminate some of the strengths, weaknesses, and failures of these shows in their portrayal of mental illness. Although this thesis relies extensively on ideas, language, and scholarship from disability studies, it is not a disability studies thesis; rather it will demonstrate how scholarly lenses provided by disability studies can be fruitfully applied to musical and theatrical representations of mental illness. In addition to touching on themes of genre, characterization and narrative theory, therapy and treatment for mental illness, and modern marketability of musical theater, this thesis demonstrates that the theories from disability studies scholarship can be fruitfully applied to other depictions of non-normativity, such as mental illness.

Bloudy Tygrisses: Murderous Women In Early Modern English Drama And Popular Literature

Hill, Alexandra 01 January 2009 (has links)
This thesis examines artistic and literary images of murderous women in popular print published in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England. The construction of murderous women in criminal narratives, published between 1558 and 1625 in pamphlet, ballad, and play form, is examined in the context of contemporary historical records and cultural discourse. Chapter One features a literature review of the topic in recent scholarship. Chapter Two, comprised of two subsections, discusses representations of early modern women in contemporary literature and criminal archives. The subsections in Chapter Two examine early modern treatises, sermons, and essays concerning the nature of women, the roles and responsibilities of wives and mothers, and debates about marriage, as well as a review of women tried for murder in the Middlesex assize courts between 1558 and 1625. Chapter Three, comprised of four subsections, engages in critical readings of approximately 52 pamphlets, ballads, and plays published in the same period. Individual subsections discuss how traitorous wives, murderous mothers, women who murder in their communities, and punishment and redemption are represented in the narratives. Woodcut illustrations printed in these texts are also examined, and their iconographic contributions to the construction of bad women is discussed. Women who murder in these texts are represented as consummately evil creatures capable of inflicting terrible harm to their families and communities, and are consistently discovered, captured, and executed by their communities for their heinous crimes. Murderous women in early modern popular literature also provided a means for contemporary men and women to explore, confront, and share in the depths of sin, while anticipating their own spiritual salvation. Pamphlets, plays, and broadsides related bawdy, graphic, and violent stories that allow modern readers a glimpse of the popular culture and mental world of Renaissance England.
