Watching and learning from the shadows : political knowledge among DREAMEer Latinos

Tafoya, Joe Robert 22 September 2014 (has links)
The fate of undocumented youth recently overwhelmed political dialogue on immigration and its effect on those individuals remains largely unstudied. This paper extends the scope of political information analyses from potential voters to undocumented childhood arrivals. Quantitative observations come from in-depth qualitative interviews in Los Angeles County, California and the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. It finds important regional differences in the ability of immigration status to motivate cognitive engagement of politics. It questions the threat hypothesis, as highly politically knowledgeable DREAMers appear to reside in supportive environments. Such places help equip them with the ability to attribute blame and channel anger or enthusiasm. Findings suggest profound dissimilarities in the potential for political participation if and when DREAMer Latinos gain access to citizenship. / text

Sapno vaizdavimas L. Gutausko romane „Vilko dantų karoliai“ ir H. Wassmo „Septintas susitikimas“ / The representation of dream in Leonardas Gutauskas‘s novel ″Vilko dantų karoliai″ and Herbjørga Wassmo ″The seventh meeting″

Mikelionis, Tadas 17 June 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In this work in nonintegration way the literary dreams were analyzed, according to analytical, interpretational, narathological, theoretical instruments, offered by Russian formalism, C. G. Jung’s theory of archetypes. The sources of research – 8 literary dreams of Herbjørg Wassmo‘s novel „Septintasis susitikimas“ and Leonardas Gutauskas‘ first part of „Vilko dantų karoliai“. The literary dream itself in the creation of its admirers or when it becomes a basis of the composition structure of creation, constantly attracts the attention of people in literature. So the choice of such an object also determines its topicality in the contemporary scientific world. The works of these authors are chosen due to handiness of dreams for the research analysis of this work. In this work it was tryed, according to technics, offered by Prince and Jung, to analyse the literary dreams, by relating it, applying cinematic concepts, conceptions, theories, relating dreams with myths and fairy-tales. To archieve this goal there were formulated such tasks: to theoreticaly formulate the conception of dream, as narrative, to look for the principles of cinematic narrative in the dream, to recognize the plots and motives of fairy-tale and saga, which come through it, to find the relations between the myth and dream, to look for an archetypical visuals in the dreams. Such an object of work was chosen nonaccidentally: the important aspect, which encourages writers to integrate dreams in artistical reality... [to full text]

Pools / Dreams / Parental Gaze

Gafny, Tal 01 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is a testimony of thoughts and ideas that have been circulating in my studio for the past few years, in their current form. It is also an experiment in writing an autobiographical piece of prose. It was written parallel to, and after, making the film Double Take with Perrin Turner. The film is an exploration of a number of relationships, related and sometimes haunted by one another. I wish for this text to operate not only as an after-the-fact recollection of thoughts, but also in relation to what will follow it – similarly to the way a trailer operates in relation to a movie. This is an extract and a prologue rather than conclusion or resolution.

Assembly and regulation of the DREAM complex

Felthousen, Jessica G 01 January 2016 (has links)
The DREAM complex assembles during G0/G1 when RB-like protein p130 recruits E2F4, DP1, and a core complex of five MuvB proteins to repress genes involved in cell cycle progression. In S-phase, the MuvB core dissociates from p130 and binds to BMYB transcription factor. Binding of the MuvB core to p130 requires phosphorylation of its subunit LIN52 at S28 residue by DYRK1A protein kinase. However, little is known about how the MuvB core interacts with p130 to form the DREAM complex, and how these interactions are manipulated throughout the cell cycle. In collaboration with Dr. Seth Rubin, we characterized the structural basis for DREAM assembly, and found that the LxSxExL sequence in LIN52 directly interacts with the LxCxE binding cleft within the pocket domain of p130. Furthermore, immunoprecipitation and proliferation assays revealed that mutating the LIN52 LxSxExL sequence to mimic the canonical LxCxE motif found in viral oncoproteins reduces cellular proliferation and stabilizes the DREAM complex in the presence of viral proteins. We addressed how the DREAM complex is disassembled upon cell cycle entry and found that CDK phosphorylation of p130 inactivates the DREAM complex by displacing p130 from the MuvB core. Under certain conditions, we found that BMYB and p130 simultaneously bind the MuvB core, while overexpression of BMYB disrupts DREAM assembly. Together, our study provides insight into the structural mechanisms of DREAM assembly and function, which can help identify novel approaches to halt tumor cell proliferation or dormancy.

Sen a dalších projevy nevědomí v mezilidské komunikaci / Dreams and other formations in communication with self and with others

Písecká, Petra January 2012 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to accentuate the communicational aspect of dealing with unconscious manifestations, with emphasis on handling dreams. Based on the analysis of Sigmund Freud's texts, it examines the ways in which we can talk about dreams and other unconscious manifestations and what influence such talk has on the individuals participating in the communicational process. The thesis charts several of Sigmund Freud's important texts that are used as a basis to prove that thanks to the mystery surrounding it, a dream can exert significant influence on communication. Sigmund Freud's theory was chosen for this thesis, whose works about dreams and whose interest in examining unconscious manifestations, such as forgetting, slipping of the tongue, faulty acts and other, contain a communicational potential, whose surface Freud barely scratches, or which he often treats with outright neglect. The communicational aspect of Freud's works is accentuated thanks to Roman Jakobson's theory of communication. Keywords: dream, faulty acts, communication

Bucket in My Hand: Kentucky Fried Chicken Advertising, American Dream Discourse, and the Hunger-Obesity Paradox

Smith, Rachel 27 October 2016 (has links)
As a cornerstone of American identity, the American Dream serves as a hegemonic ideology rooted in myth. This myth centers on an ardent belief in equity despite the existence of systemic racial and economic exclusions, which includes inconsistent access to healthy food resulting in the hunger-obesity paradox. Because fast food plays a leading role in generating this paradox where an individual can be both hungry and obese, this thesis analyzes the 2015 Kentucky Fried Chicken advertising campaign to identify how the campaign perpetuates Dream discourse and understand how that discourse contributes to the hunger-obesity paradox. With the Colonel anchored at the heart of this campaign, the analysis found that he embodies the Dream and acts as a megaphone for Dream discourse. And ultimately, because Dream discourse overlooks and even admonishes low-income people and people of color, the people who most often face hunger and obesity, it contributes to the paradox.

Figuração e invisibilidade: uma leitura de \'De olhos bem fechados\' de Stanley Kubrick / Figuração e invisibilidade: a reading of \'Eyes wide shut\' de Stanley Kubrick

Sa, Leonor da Cruz e 27 September 2007 (has links)
To film the last film of his career, Stanley Kubrick was based on the novel of Arthur Schnitzler, \"Traumnovelle\" (1926), fact that already requires attention: how to film in the year 2000 a film based on a book written in the end of 19th century? How to express the problems of a social class from a period in transformation and consolidation in the 20th century? Kubrick defined the book as being a romance on fear. An objective can be defining the fear that is mentioned. A present subject in the romance and the film is sexuality and a clear relation between Schnitzler and Freud. The problem of oppression is basic in this paper.

The Effect of Student Debt on Career Choices

Kenny, Daniel T. January 2010 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Eve Spangler / Student debt affects a multitude of gifted and intelligent college students each year. In order to attend our nation’s premier universities, members of the lower and middle classes must procure loans which prove debilitating to their respective economic situations. Upon graduating, such financial burden ultimately forces these individuals to choose economic pragmatism over the pursuit of their true passions. This growing reality calls for a reexamination of the American system of higher education, particularly the underlying ideology behind it – the American Dream. Through an analysis of eight interviews and the use of supporting data, this study reflects the need for drastic reform. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College.
