The Worlds Behind the Worlds: Directing Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Schneider, David S. 01 January 2009 (has links)
"The Worlds Behind the Worlds" documents the process of directing "A Midsummer Night's Dream," presented October 2008 in the McLeod Theater at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Specifically, this document details the development of the director's vision for the play from initial readings through post-production evaluations. The work is structured chronologically, beginning in Chapter One with a discourse on the director's initial response to the play followed by a preliminary statement of vision. The second chapter analyzes key research through which the preliminary statement of vision was filtered and discusses the director's conclusions. A revised statement of vision and concept is presented, followed by a proposed production process and projected results. Chapter Three explains the execution of this production process, and the final chapter consists of the director's evaluation of the production. Appendices follow including visual research, production documents, the director's approach to heightened language, a rehearsal journal, an external evaluation, and production photos.

C. Boyle (1995).

Transpositional ideologies: Finding a home in the urban core

January 2016 (has links)
The American Dream has its origins in the tenets of this country: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal: among these [equalities] are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."1 The notion that happiness must be pursued, is integral to American cultural thought and ultimately the collective American Dream. Realization of this dream and its physical manifestation, however, are the direct result of an expanding industrial economy beginning in the 1940s. A myriad factors influenced the possibility of expansion into new suburbs within commuting distance of growing cities. The creation of the interstate and the boom of the auto industry made easy transportation into and out of the city a reality. Heightened manufacturing spurred by World War II, the growth of the stock market, and wage growth made fleeing the dense urban center an economic possibility, and for many a desirable pursuit. Cities grew at alarming rates and became overcrowded as a result of the industrial job market Yet, industrial waste made city life untenable; pollution permeated the air and disease filled the overcrowded streets. The desire to leave grew quickly, but it was not yet possible for many working class families until the 1944 G.I. bill.2 The bill increased the possibility of suburban home ownership through subsidized housing mortgages and loans, affording returning veterans the opportunity to participate in attaining the dream.3 To keep up with demand, construction techniques drew on the mass production methods of the auto industry and built "model" homes that were easily constructible with speed and an economy of means.4 Easy access to a autonomous home and yard outside of the city shifted demographics, the American landscape, and cemented the suburban model as the predominant mode of the American home for an idealized nuclear family. / 0 / SPK / specialcollections@tulane.edu

DREAMING REALITY

Schoolcraft, Ashley Nicole 01 December 2019 (has links)
My work has always been about subjects I am very passionate about and I use them in a way to relate to others by creating a message. For my thesis, I delve deeper into my own life experience to create a piece more personal to me yet relatable to all. I am using creative storytelling and symbolism to create a narrative using not only the lens of a camera but also 3-D animation. “Dreaming Reality” is a statement of female empowerment and independence. Through this story, I hope to bring to light that young women can overcome their insecurities and become independent, driven, successful, and confident. Through the use of the dream process to overview life experiences, all audience members, not only women, can enjoy and connect with the story, as well as feel empowered to create their own life story through their creative lens.

The Tree House Project

Östlund, Klara January 2015 (has links)
To be truly rooted in my final degree project, I decided to go back to something that fascinated me as a child; To live among the trees. I remember trees standing out as individuals, as landmarks, and as architecture. Cultures all around the world displays importance in their relationship to trees, be it a source for shelter, food, symbolic references or playing as a child. This project explores the actual building process, when constructing something in a living tree. It turns into both a physical and mental challange. This project is divided into two main modes; (1) a research activity, and (2) a building action. The method is almost an intuitive one, being in the tree, at the construction site, as I both come up with design concepts, metaphores and physical solutions for the project. The conclusions are both sketches and real solutions as much as the actual final tree house experience. The site is situated about 10 km south of Uppsala, Sweden.
