Steering Behaviour of 44 Drivers in Lane Change Manoeuvres on a Slippery Surface

This master thesis deals with experimental data that were collected through a crash avoidance experiment (which was lead by Professor Lennart Strandberg) in February and March 1990. Fifty-two ordinary drivers were instructed to perform two different kinds of manoeuvres on ice to determine the effectiveness of antilock brakes and of four tyre configurations. Results were reported at the 1991 ESV Conference. The first aim of this master thesis is to check and revise the measured data (used by Prof. Strandberg in courses at Linköping University). Checking out many hours of video recordings from onboard cameras reveals various protocol inconsistencies and errors, which in some cases it is not possible to correct. This work might increase the reliability of any further analysis of these data. The second aim is to elaborate on the revised data and to test the hypothesis that quick steering is a key factor to not lose control of the car during a crash avoidance manoeuvre. Different variables are introduced and used to estimate the steering wheel velocity and lateral friction use. The results show linear (positive) correlations between lateral friction use and steering wheel velocity. The greatest steering wheel velocities appear in the tests with loss-of-control and reach values up to 1180 degrees per second. However, the 1990 experimental layout was not intended for this type of research questions and it seems difficult to determine the causal relationship between quick steering and control of the car. Some cases of excessive steering input might have occurred. The results indicate that quick steering by itself is not enough to guarantee the total control of the car. An early reaction to the skid might be necessary too. Evidently, further research is needed.

Influência de medidas de segurança de trânsito no comportamento dos motoristas

Os acidentes de trânsito são uma das principais causas de morte e invalidez no mundo inteiro, e projeções indicam que sua participação entre essas causas tende a aumentar no futuro. Estima-se que o fator humano contribua para a ocorrência de mais de 90% dos acidentes, e grande parte desta contribuição advém do comportamento. Nesta dissertação de mestrado, buscou-se identificar e caracterizar medidas de segurança de trânsito conforme sua influência em inibir o cometimento de infrações à legislação de trânsito por parte dos motoristas. Para tanto, foram conduzidas uma pesquisa qualitativa e uma pesquisa quantitativa. A pesquisa qualitativa, realizada através da técnica de Grupos Focados, foi utilizada para identificar as principais infrações de trânsito que contribuem para a ocorrência de acidentes, além de coletar subsídios para a elaboração da pesquisa quantitativa. Esta, por sua vez, consistiu na aplicação de um questionário auto-relatado a motoristas de automóvel da cidade de Porto Alegre. Como resultado, a pesquisa qualitativa indicou que as infrações que mais contribuem para os acidentes são a embriaguez, o excesso de velocidade e o avanço de sinal vermelho de semáforo. A pesquisa quantitativa permitiu concluir que as medidas de segurança de trânsito que mais influenciam os motoristas a não cometerem infrações de trânsito são aquelas relacionadas à restrição de direitos, como apreensão do veículo ou suspensão da habilitação, e à possibilidade de ser flagrado pelas autoridades. Por outro lado, as campanhas de conscientização na mídia demonstraram ser o tipo de medida com menor potencial para influenciar o comportamento dos motoristas. / Road traffic crashes are one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide, and it is believed that their share among these causes will grow in the future. The human factor contributes to over 90% of traffic crashes, and a great part of this contribution originates from human behaviour. This master’s thesis aimed to identify and characterize road safety measures according to their influence on driver behaviour, regarding the commitment of traffic offences. In order to do that, a qualitative and a quantitative survey were carried on. The qualitative survey was made with the Focus Group technique and was used to identify the traffic offences that contribute the most to road crashes, as well as to collect information to help preparing the quantitative survey. The last consisted in applying a self-reported questionnaire to automobile drivers from Porto Alegre, Brazil. As a result, the qualitative survey indicated that speeding, drunk driving and red light crossing are the traffic offences that contribute the most to road crashes. The quantitative survey allowed to conclude that the road safety measures with more influence on drivers, so they do not commit traffic offences, are those related to their rights restriction, like vehicle seizure or driver’s licence suspension, and to the possibility of being caught by authorities. On the other hand, road safety campaings on the media seemed to be the kind of measure with the smallest potential to influence driver behaviour.

Optimization of freight truck driver scheduling based on operation cost model for Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) transportation

Drivers are essential factors affecting the efficiency and management level of a carrier. In this thesis, the driver assignment problem is investigated and methods for obtaining lower total operational costs are introduced for small and medium-sized truck freight transportation companies. Three interrelated research topics, including the following, have been systematically studied. Firstly, extending the traditional costing and Activity-Based Costing (ABC) method, the new Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) method, TDABC-FTC, has been introduced for truck freight companies. Detailed implementation process flow has been designed to streamline the easy incorporation of overhead cost. Fuel costs hold about one-third of the total operational costs of truck freight transportation, and drivers’ driving behaviors heavily influence the fuel consumption rate. In this work, the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) Ⅱ, GPS tracker and Controller Area Network (CAN) bus are used to retrieve related truck operation data and transfer these data to a central database for later processing to obtain driving behavior parameters. An artificial neural network (ANN) model, built using MATLAB toolbox, is introduced to capture the relations between driving behavior and fuel consumption rate. The fuel consumption indicators for different drivers are then developed to reflect their relative fuel consumption rate quantitatively. The driver assignment problem is modeled as an optimization problem for minimizing the total operational cost of the truck, and the NP-hard problem is solved as a mixed integer programming problem. Two solution methods, Branch and Bound, and the Hungarian algorithm, are used to solve the formulated driver assignment problem. The Hungarian algorithm has been modified to address two particular situations in the driver assignment problem. Numerical experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the newly introduced TDABC model, the fuel saving oriented optimal driver assignment method associating driver behavior to truck fuel consumption rate for different transportation tasks, and the solution methods for the special optimization problems formulated in this work. The newly introduced methods were tested using real truck fleet data, showing considerable benefit of the optimal scheduling techniques, and forming the foundation for further research in this area. / Graduate

The effect of ambient lighting combined with EVA warning on driver reaction

Emergency vehicles are at increased traffic risk due to legal exemptions like speeding or running red lights during emergencies. These exemptions can cause delays and complications in their response. The study explored if warning messages to passenger car drivers, particularly the EVA (Emergency Vehicle Approaching) message, with or without ambient lighting, could improve safety and response. A driving simulator experiment with 60 participants tested the impact of different levels of warning, including the EVA message and augmented ambient lighting (AEL). Participants also completed pre- and post-experiment questionnaires. The test involved a rural road scenario with background music to challenge emergency vehicle detection. Results showed significant behavioural differences between drivers receiving no warning and those receiving either form of warning, but no significant difference between the two warned groups. A reliability inspired strategy for intelligent performance management with predictive driver behaviour: A case study for a diesel particulate filter

Yes / The increase availability of operational data from the fleets of cars in the field offers opportunities to deploy machine learning to identify patterns of driver behaviour. This provides contextual intelligence insight that can be used to design strategies for online optimisation of the vehicle performance, including compliance with stringent legislation. This paper illustrates this approach with a case study for a Diesel Particulate Filter, where machine learning deployed to real world automotive data is used in conjunction with a reliability inspired performance modelling paradigm to design a strategy to enhance operational performance based on predictive driver behaviour. The model-in-the-loop simulation of the proposed strategy on a fleet of vehicles showed significant improvement compared to the base strategy, demonstrating the value of the approach.

Why do people drive when they can’t see clearly?

Yes / Purpose Refractive blur is associated with decreased hazard perception and impairments in driving performance, but little is known about why people who have spectacles to correct their distance vision drive with uncorrected vision. Methods We conducted six focus groups. Participants were 30 drivers (mean age 45) who reported having driven uncorrected at least twice in the past six months despite having spectacles to correct their distance vision. Focus groups were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Results We identified three themes. 1. Responsibility: participants did not feel obliged to drive with optimal vision and believed that others have a responsibility to ensure drivers maintain clear vision. 2. Safe Enough: participants felt safe to drive uncorrected, did not believe they need to wear spectacles to see sufficiently clearly and that they would know if their uncorrected eyesight fails to meet minimum standards. 3. Situations: participants discussed how they would drive uncorrected for short and familiar journeys, when they feel alert, in daylight and in good weather. Conclusions Beliefs about the importance of driving with clear vision compete with the benefits of not wearing spectacles. Eyecare professionals should provide more direct advice to patients regarding the need to wear their visual correction for driving.

No / This paper outlines the current challenges of driver behaviour modelling for real-world applications and presents the novel method to identify the pattern of usage to predict upcoming journeys in probability sense. The primary aim is to establish similarity between observed behaviour of drivers resulting in the ability to cluster them and deploy control strategies based on contextual intelligence and datadriven approach. The proposed approach uses the probability density function (PDF) driven by kernel density estimation (KDE) as a probabilistic approach to predict the type of the upcoming journey, expressed as duration and distance. Neste trabalho foram estabelecidos os fundamentos metodológicos baseados na identificação dos fatores de risco, fatores de risco identificados, necessários na elaboração de campanhas de segurança viária, orientados pelas diretrizes estabelecidas no projeto CAST (Campaigns and Awareness-raising Strategies in Traffic Safety), o qual define a identificação do comportamento-problema gerador de acidentes como elemento essencial na definição do objetivo de cada campanha. Não havendo dados estatísticos consistentes e confiáveis dos quais seja possível extrair esta informação, foi necessário identificar os fatores comportamentais que estão na origem de atos inseguros e que devem ser prioritários na elaboração de campanhas de segurança viária. Para o efeito, foi necessário estabelecer uma metodologia que envolveu a utilização de diferentes instrumentos de coleta de dados com o objetivo de identificar os comportamentos-problema, assim como outros fatores relacionados à infraestrutura e ao meio ambiente que poderiam induzir esses comportamentos. Esta metodologia envolveu a aplicação de Grupos Focais que orientaram a elaboração de um questionário voltado para a identificação dos fatores de risco do sistema viário, comportamentos de risco e opiniões relacionados com os tipos de mensagens de campanhas. Este questionário foi posteriormente aplicado a uma amostra de condutores, juntamente com o DBQ &#8211; Driver Behaviour Questionnaire, este orientado para a identificação de comportamentos de risco de cada inquirido. A associação desses dois instrumentos permitiu a identificação de fatores de risco no sistema viário, assim como comportamentais de risco habituais e as preferências dos inquiridos sobre tipos e mensagens de campanhas, bem como meios de mídia. A análise estatística dos dados coletados permitiu identificar os seguintes fatores de risco relacionados à via: (1) más condições da infraestrutura da via, (2) más condições de sinalização, (3) más condições dos veículos que trafegam pelas vias, e (4) interação principalmente com pedestres. Foram ainda identificadas as suas opiniões relativamente a comportamentos-problema dos demais usuários do sistema viário, destacando-se os seguintes fatores: (1) sono, (2) bebidas, (3) drogas e (4) mensagens de texto. Quanto à importância das campanhas, os inquiridos consideram que elas devem: (1) ser dirigidas aos fatores de risco identificados, (2) estar associadas a outras ações como fiscalização e (3) seus resultados devem ser divulgados pelos órgãos de governo. Since there is no consistent and reliable statistical data proveding this information, it was necessary to identify the behavioral factors that originate unsafe acts and that should be priority in road safety campaigns. In order to achieve this result, it was necessary to establish a methodology involving the use of different data collection tools with the intention of identifying the problem behaviors, as well as other factors related to the infrastructure and environment capable to induce these behaviors. This methodology involved Focus Groups application that directed the elaboration of a questionnaire aiming at a identifing road system risk factors, risky behaviors and opinions regarding the types of campaigns messages. This questionnaire was further applied to a drivers\' sample, together with the DBQ Driver Behavior Questionnaire, which was directed to the identification of risky behaviors of each respondent. The association between these two instruments enabled the identification of road system risk factors, as well as common risky behaviors and the respondents\' preferences about the types of campaign messages and media means. The statistical analysis of the collected data enabled the identification of the following risk factors related to the road system: (1) poor road infrastructure conditions, (2) poor signing conditions, (3) poor vehicle conditions, and (4) interaction mainly with pedestrians. Opinions about problem-behaviors were also identified, stressing the following factors: (1) drowsiness, (2) drink and drive, (3) drugs and medication effects (4) texting driving. Concerning the campaigns importance, the respondents considered that they should: (1) be directed to identified risk factors, (2) be associated to other actions such as enforcement and (3) have its results published by the government entities. Finally, regarding the campaign messages and the used media types, the respondents considered that the messages should: (1) use affective anchors, (2) be more impactful, (3) contain real scenes, (4) have educative purpose; and the most adequate media would be: (1) television, (2) internet (with emphasis to the social networks) and (3) variable message panels. With respect to the DBQ questionnaire, seven behavioral factors based on the respondents own experience were identified as more important and related to unsafe attitudes: (1) poor fitness to drive, (2) violations, (3) distraction/inattention, (4) aggressive driving, (5) poor situation awareness, (6) stress and (7) behavioural adaptation. These factors represented the priority topics that should be handled in future campaigns.
