The multiple identities of creative labourers and negotiated creative autonomy : an empirical research with light-entertainment television PDs in South KoreaAn, Chairin January 2016 (has links)
The research presented here examines a new definitional framework of creative autonomy that was designed with regard to the negotiated nature of creative autonomy and its relationship to the multiple identities of creative labourers. Having identified several limitations in the existing literature on creative autonomy, I argue that there is a need to observe creative labourers through a more appropriate lens—one which understands the paradoxes and dilemmas that today’s creative labourers experience in an undeniably commercial working environment. I suggest that such paradoxes and dilemmas, and the balance that needs to be attained, can be better understood if we consider the concept of the multiple identities of creative workers. Based upon this, I propose a new framework of creative autonomy, which seeks to appropriately reflect the distinctive attitudes of creative workers by taking into account the many concurrent desires manifest in the workplace. To empirically examine the new framework of creative autonomy and the concept of the multiplicities of creative labourers, the case of Main PDs in the South Korean light-entertainment television industry was selected. By observing the lived experiences of Main PDs, I attempt to reveal the negotiated nature of creative autonomy, which is the foundation of the new framework proposed in this study. Consequently, the significant industrial value of individual creative labourers who are able to negotiate and balance various intrinsic and extrinsic needs or demands in the creative production process becomes clear, and I then conclude by suggesting a need to establish a new management strategy so that broadcasting organisations are able to retain and manage professionalised PD labourers in the shifting labour market, for the development of not only organisations but also the creative workforce and the industry as a whole.

This thesis conducts empirical studies on China's stock market using contemporary financial theories in order to explain the anomalies in China's stock market and then put forward some policy implications on the basis of the empirical research findings. The thesis consists of seven chapters. In addition to providing a brief introduction to the relationship between stock market development and economic growth. Chapter 1 describes several anomalies occurring in the international stock markets and sets up a research framework for the thesis to further study. Chapter 2 is a literature review. It reviews major contemporary theories or hypotheses related to initial public offerings (IPOs) underpricing, long-run underperformance and asset pricing characteristics. Chapter 3 is a general description of China's stock market development, which offers an institutional background such as IPOs system and stock market structure. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 conduct empirical studies using data from China's stock market. In Chapter 4, using cross sectional regression, I examine whether short run underpricing exists in China's stock market and the validity of a series of theories used in explaining this phenomenon. In Chapter 5, based on standard event study methodology, I investigate whether long-run underperformance of IPOs exists in China's stock market, and to what extent. In Chapter 6, according to Fama-MacBeth approach, I build a univariant model to examine whether Capital Asset pricing Model and Fama-French Three-Factor Model hold in China's stock market, and lo analyse empirically the asset pricing characteristics of China's stock market. Chapter 7, the last chapter, is the summary of the thesis. Some suggestions and policy implications are presented.

range estimates derived from DS-CDMA waveforms. The first algorithm, which is RLS-based, is
derived as the solution of an approximate least-squares positioning problem. This algorithm has the
advantage of reduced computational complexity, compared with the EKF-based algorithm that is
presented. It is shown via simulations that both positioning algorithms perform well, with the
performance of the EKF-based algorithm being superior.

Civics and citizenship education in Malaysia : the voice of micro policy enactorsMahmood, Haniza January 2014 (has links)
The main objective of this study is to provide an understanding of the way Civic and Citizenship Education, as intended at the macro level is translated, implemented and enacted at the micro level. Moreover, it also seeks to understand the contestation and challenges of secondary school teachers as policy implementers at the micro level in transferring the new curriculum policy into teaching and learning practice. Adopting a qualitative research approach, empirical evidence and in-depth information were gathered through document analysis, interviews, questionnaire, lesson observation and field notes. The document analysis showed that there were similarities between Western and Malaysian concepts of citizenship education in that Malaysia’s Civic and Citizenship Education was concerned with developing good personal and patriotic citizens. This differed from England’s citizenship education that promoted political literacy and active participation in democratic society. Despite in the official document, Civic and Citizenship Education seems to be strongly classified and strongly framed (Bernstein, 1975; 1971), at the school level, this subject is weakly classified and weakly framed. Indeed, a closer examination in each school visited showed that the ‘battle’ (Goodson, 1998 : 45) between this subject and other academic subjects continue. The analysis also illustrated that the enactment of Civic and Citizenship Education was mediated, not only by school students’ ethnic population, but also by school contexts that existed in each school. This also led to the gap between teachers’ perception of citizenship and citizenship education with their teaching practices. Thus, this study demonstrated that the process of translating, implementing and enacting policy at the school level is not a direct process (Ball, 2006) as there are various factors that could mediate the way a policy is implemented and enacted at the micro level (Ball et al., 2012; Braun et al. 2011a).

Women's health as state strategy : Sri Lanka's twentieth centuryThoradeniya, Darshi Nayanathara January 2014 (has links)
Sri Lanka gained prominence in international policy circles as an apparent 'success story' first as a model colony in early 1950s and later as a development model for South Asia by 1970s. In naming Sri Lankan 'success story' experts pointed to the decreasing population growth rate and decreasing mortality. Renowned demographers attributed this to the improvements in the field of social indicators such as high literacy rates, increased life expectancy and rise in female age at marriage. In this 'success story' women's health serves as a linchpin to the attainment of national progress. But a focus on women's health – as statistics and indicators – has also served to silence questions about Sri Lankan women's broader experiences of their disaggregated health. In particular, while Sri Lankan 'women's health' served the Sri Lankan state's 'success story' well, what is less clear is how women's individual bodies have fared within subsequent tellings of its other twentieth century Sri Lankan stories of late colonial, national, developmental, neoliberal and militarised phases. My thesis examines this question through a critical examination of women's health history of this island nation. I trace its history from initial birth control, family planning (1953) to development population control to militarisation, financialisation of women's bodies and ends with a critical examination of recent policies that claim to emancipate women's health 'beyond' a myopic focus on their role as reproducer. Although women's health was vigilantly 'controlled' and 'planned' for the state building project and women's bodies were framed around the notion of social reproduction for the nation building project of post independent Sri Lanka, women were neither subjects nor objects of these two projects. Women's reproductive bodies were, rather, the ground for a complex and competing set of struggles on population, family planning, development, modernisation and ethno nationalism of post independent Sri Lanka. Further women's health/women's bodies analysis helps to elucidate the manner in which we can track the operation of power that serves to silence women's own corporeal subjectivity and to delimit the realms in which she can exercise her own agency.

South Korea's sunshine policy, 1998-2002 : domestic imperatives and private interestsKim, Jeong-yong January 2002 (has links)
The end of the Cold War has brought both uncertainty and opportunity for states interested in designing their own security policies. Alternative methods, other than military solutions, should be exploited to prevent insecurity and instability. This study is concerned with South Korea's security approach towards North Korea in the post-Cold War era and in particular how South Korea can use non-military tools to prevent military conflict in the Korean Peninsula and to build mutual confidence between the two Koreas in the long-run. This thesis also presents an analysis of both the need and the opportunity for South Korea to adopt a comprehensive economic engagement strategy towards North Korea in the post-Cold War era in order to achieve these goals. It argues that South Korea's implementation of economic engagement with North Korea requires its policy-makers' strong policy-making will for an active and consistent engagement posture. Then, this study demonstrates the important role of President Kim Dae-jung's strong causal beliefs about the necessity of engagement measures to address the post-Cold War North Korean security problems on the Kim Dae-jung government's policy-making in favour of comprehensive engagement with North Korea. This study presents the model of 'business-track diplomacy' to test a state's utilisation of economic engagement strategy as security policy. This model provides ways to think around security issues and alternative security options which go beyond the traditional military containment approach to security in international relations (IR). Moreover, this study presents a new belief perspective that illuminates the South Korea's North Korea policy-making process, which had previously been dominated by military issues and essentially required an international structure perspective, centred on US influence. Thus, the belief approach contributes to the field of foreign policy analysis (FPA) for South Korea by proving the importance of its decision-makers' policy beliefs and by going beyond the conventional international structure approach.

This paper discusses how one transmitter can transmit several data signals to several receivers at the same time in a Point to Multipoint communication system. Two novel schemes are proposed. One is communication with Multiple Phase Shift Keying(MPSK,e.g.8PSK),another is communication with Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum Multiple-Access(DS/SSMA). Their models are presented and their operations are illustrated. It is proved theoretically that the communication properties of DS/SSMA are better than those of another.

From developmental to neo-developmental cultural industries policy : the Korean experience of the 'creative turn'Chung, Jong-Eun January 2012 (has links)
This thesis undertakes an explanatory case study of the Korean cultural industries policy shift recently instituted under the Kim Dae-Jung and Roh Moo-Hyun governments (1998-2008). This shift can be well positioned within the broader context of the creative turn in national cultural policy around the world, which was initiated by the British New Labour governments (1997-2010). Indeed, the trend ‘has had a remarkable take-up across many parts of the world’, elevating the British discourse on creativity into a policy ‘doctrine’ or ‘credo’ not only in the UK, but also across the globe. Despite the similarities in the driving discourses and policy methods, this thesis argues that the Korean policy shift was significantly different from its British counterpart as a result of the differing pace and trajectories of industrialization in the two countries. Starting from the concept of the East Asian developmental state as an entry point, this thesis explores three major questions: How and why did Korea go through a cultural industries policy shift in the period following the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis? Has the shift produced a policy framework which is different from that of the previous developmental state, and if so, what is its form? What results have the policy shift and framework brought about in the Korean cultural industries sector, and how were they achieved? By addressing the process, product and performance of the policy shift in this way, this thesis presents a distinctive description and analysis of the way the cultural and creative industries (CI) have been nurtured in the era of ‘post-organized capitalism’. As a former representative developmental state and as a neo-developmental state currently known for having made a clear break with the past, the Korean case can provide a unique opportunity to re-think the recently fashionable creative turn among various nations. Given its position in the global economic hierarchy as either a high-end developing country or a low-end developed country, the story of Korea’s fundamental CI policy shift can furnish something of interest and academic value to both these groups.
