Optimally-Sized Design of a Wind/Diesel/Fuel Cell Hybrid System for a Remote Community

Vafaei, Mehdi 29 September 2011 (has links)
Remote communities, characterized by no connection to the main power grid, traditionally get their power from diesel generators. Long geographical distances and lack of suitable roads make the fuel transportation difficult and costly, increasing the final cost of electricity. A microgrid using renewable energy as the main source can serve as a viable solution for this problem with considerable economical and environmental benefits. The focus of this research is to develop a microgrid for a remote community in northern Ontario (Canada) that combines wind, as a renewable source of energy, and a hydrogen-based energy storage system, with the goal of meeting the demand, while minimizing the cost of energy and adverse effect on the environment. The existing diesel generators remain in the system, but their use is minimized. The microgrid system studied in this research uses a wind turbine to generate electricity, an electrolyser to absorb the excess power from the wind source, a hydrogen tank to store the hydrogen generated by the electrolyser, a fuel cell to supply the demand when the wind resource is not adequate, and a diesel generator as a backup power. Two scenarios for unit-sizing are defined and their pros. and cons. are discussed. The economic evaluation of scenarios is performed and a cost function for the system is defined. The optimization problem thus formulated is solved by solvers in GAMS. The inputs are wind profile of the area, load profile of the community, existing sources of energy in the area, operating voltage of the grid, and sale price of electricity in the area. The outputs are the size of the fuel cell and electrolyser units that should be used in the microgrid, the capital and running costs of each system, the payback period of the system, and cost of generated electricity. Following this, the best option for the microgrid structure and component sizes for the target community is determined. Finally, a MATLAB-based dynamic simulation platform for the system under study with similar load/wind profile and sizing obtained in optimization problem is developed and the dynamic behaviour of microgrid at different cases is studied.

Concurrent fire dynamic models and thermomechanical analysis of steel and concrete structures

Choi, Joonho 21 October 2008 (has links)
The objective of this study is to formulate a general 3D material-structural analysis framework for the thermomechanical behavior of steel-concrete structures in a fire environment. The proposed analysis framework consists of three modeling parts: fire dynamics simulation, heat transfer analysis, and a thermomechanical stress analysis of the structure. The first modeling part consists of applying the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) fire dynamics simulator (FDS) where coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with thermodynamics are combined to model the fire progression within the steel-concrete structure. The goal is to generate the spatial-temporal (ST) solution variables (temperature, heat flux) on the surfaces of the structure. The FDS-ST solutions are generated in a discrete numerical form. Continuous FDS-ST approximations are then developed to represent the temperature or heat-flux at any given time or point within the structure. An extensive numerical study is carried out to examine the best ST approximation functions that strike a balance between accuracy and simplicity. The second modeling part consists of a finite-element (FE) transient heat analysis of the structure using the continuous FDS-ST surface variables as prescribed thermal boundary conditions. The third modeling part is a thermomechanical FE structural analysis using both nonlinear material and geometry. The temperature history from the second modeling part is used at all nodal points. The ABAQUS FE code is used with newly developed external user subroutines for the second and third simulation parts. The main objective is to describe the nonlinear temperature-dependency of the specific heat of concrete materials, especially high-strength concretes, that drastically affects their transient thermal solution. New algorithms are also developed to apply the continuous FDS-ST surface nodal boundary conditions in the transient heat FE analysis. The proposed modeling framework is applied to predict the temperature and deflection of the well-documented Cardington fire tests and to predict the time-to-collapse of the recent Oakland bridge fire caused by a fuel-truck accident.

Vargas, Vinicius Athaydes de January 2011 (has links)
This work presents a lateral dynamics multibody analysis of a heavy articulated vehicle with a flexible frame for the semi-trailer. The context is given by a short perspective of the load carrying transportation scenery in Brazil. In order to build better products, the trailer manufacturers have been using development methodologies based on virtual simulation. In these circumstances, dynamic analyses are carried out, considering the hypothesis of rigid (non-deformable) bodies. Subjectively, it is known that the inclusion of flexibility in a numerical model brings it closer to reality, but very few studies work on giving numbers to this difference. Thus, this study presents an approach for taking into account the frame structural flexibility of a semi-trailer in traffic simulations. The frame of the semi-trailer is represented by a finite element model, and a free vibration analysis of this structure is carried out. The mode shapes (eigenvectors) and natural frequencies (eigenvalues) are determined. With a mode superposition method, the vibration modes are classified, for the purpose of building the structural flexibility (by linear combination) of the chassis in the dynamic analyses of the MBS software. Typical maneuvers of lateral dynamics are simulated, testing the roll stability of the combined vehicle model. The global effects for considering the mode flexibility in the semitrailer frame are evaluated through specific metrics, based on ISO standards for heavy vehicles lateral dynamics. The strong influence of the frame structural flexibility, when analyzing the articulated vehicle transient behavior, is showed by simulation results, which are presented in graphics and tables. Important measurements, such as lateral acceleration (in time and frequency domains), roll angle and vertical force on tires, besides physical phenomenon like lateral load transfer, are significantly modified by the flexibility of the frame. A simplified approach for writing the analytical equations of the flexible semi-trailer roll dynamics is added to the study. A torsional stiffness sensitivity analysis is also performed, regarding the number of transversal members in the semi-trailer chassis.

Electromagnetic Transient and Electromechanical Transient Stability Hybrid Simulation: Design, Development and its Applications

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Two significant trends of recent power system evolution are: (1) increasing installa-tion of dynamic loads and distributed generation resources in distribution systems; (2) large-scale renewable energy integration at the transmission system level. A majority of these devices interface with power systems through power electronic converters. However, existing transient stability (TS) simulators are inadequate to represent the dynamic behavior of these devices accurately. On the other hand, simulating a large system using an electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulator is computationally impractical. EMT-TS hybrid simulation approach is an alternative to address these challenges. Furthermore, to thoroughly analyze the increased interactions among the transmission and distribution systems, an integrated modeling and simulation approach is essential. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on an improved hybrid simulation approach and software development. Compared to the previous work, the pro-posed approach has three salient features: three-sequence TS simulation algorithm, three-phase/three-sequence network equivalencing and flexible switching of the serial and par-allel interaction protocols. The second part of the thesis concentrates on the applications of the hybrid simula-tion tool. The developed platform is first applied to conduct a detailed fault-induced de-layed voltage recovery (FIDVR) study on the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system. This study uncovers that after a normally cleared single line to ground fault at the transmission system could cause air conditioner motors to stall in the distribu-tion systems, and the motor stalling could further propagate to an unfaulted phase under certain conditions. The developed tool is also applied to simulate power systems inter-faced with HVDC systems, including classical HVDC and the new generation voltage source converter (VSC)-HVDC system. The third part centers on the development of integrated transmission and distribution system simulation and an advanced hybrid simulation algorithm with a capability of switching from hybrid simulation mode to TS simulation. Firstly, a modeling framework suitable for integrated transmission and distribution systems is proposed. Secondly, a power flow algorithm and a diakoptics based dynamic simulation algorithm for the integrated transmission and distribution system are developed. Lastly, the EMT-TS hybrid simulation algorithm is combined with the diakoptics based dynamic simulation algorithm to realize flexible simulation mode switching to increase the simulation efficiency. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 2016

Damasceno Borges, Daiane 12 April 2013 (has links)
Nafion inside Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) catalyst layers can be found as an ultra-thin film coating the catalyst and the catalyst support surfaces. Nafion morphology shows to be strongly sensitive to the type of material where the film is deposited, especially the hydrophobic/philic character of these materials. Our work consists in performing a complete investigation of the substrate hydrophilicity effects on the physical properties of Nafion ultra-thin film at different hydration levels. We investigate in a unique framework a variety of environments peculiar of the PEMFC catalyst layer, ranging from hydrophobic (carbon) to hydrophilic (platinum) substrates. The numerical method chosen for this work is classical Molecular Dynamics simulations. The well-thermalized thin-film configurations were described in details in terms of their structural and dynamical properties.

Dynamic analysis of a continuous pasteurization process in plate heat exchangers.

Carola Gean Carla Cavero Gutierrez 22 August 2013 (has links)
Pasteurization is a thermal process used to inactivate pathogenic and deteriorative microorganisms in liquid foods. Process control is essential for the temperature maintenance of pasteurization, so that the dynamic model is an important tool in the development, controller tests, and also in the procedure of operation. The aim of this work was the development and experimental validation of the dynamic model of a plate pasteurizer with three sections of heat exchange studying the transient state operation. The model consists of differential equations of thermal energy balance between channels and plates of heat exchanger, heat loss to the environment of the holding tube and connections and their respective initial and boundary conditions. The heat transfer coefficients of plate heat exchanger and tubes were determined experimentally. In the simulation, finite difference methods were adopted and the math solving was performed using the gPROMS software. The model was applied to represent the behavior of a plate pasteurizer in laboratory scale (Armfield FT43A), operating in two conditions: free of fouling and with fouling influence on the heating section of the heat exchanger. Experimental tests of the start-up and of disturbances in flow rates of the process were performed for the model validation. Thermocouples were inserted at various points of the equipment and the temperatures were recorded with a data acquisition system. In order to study the influence of the fouling, experimental tests were performed with two kinds of milk to obtain high and low fouling. Plates of the heat exchanger were weighed and photographed before and after of the fouling tests for evaluate the deposit formed. Generic models of fouling were used to simulate the effect of fouling on the pasteurization process. Through the comparison of experimental and simulated results, it was verified that the mathematical modeling for the transient operation of the pasteurization process was very satisfactory.

Sheds extratores e captadores de ar para indução da ventilação natural em edificações / Air extracting and capturing sheds for natural ventilation induction in buildings

Marieli Azoia Lukiantchuki 06 February 2015 (has links)
Natural ventilation is one of the most important strategies for passive cooling of indoor environments. It can occur by wind forces, stack effect or a combination of both strategies. In urban areas the wind speed is reduced due to several obstacles. Stack effect and air intake by the roof can be viable alternatives to induce natural ventilation in buildings. Among the ventilation strategies, sheds can be highlighted. These structures consist of roof openings that work as collectors or extractors of air, depending on their location in relation to the prevailing wind directions. Although they have great potential, they are seldom used by Brazilian architecture, due to lack of technical data available to the designer. Besides, sometimes the sheds are used for air intake or exhaustion without any detailed analysis on the influence of different building design parameters on natural ventilation. The starting hypothesis of this research is that there is a difference in construction parameters for an exhaustion and intake sheds and it is possible to optimize the use of natural ventilation through these devices. The research aims to investigate the potential of air extracting and capturing sheds to promote indoor natural ventilation and proposes guidelines for the design of these devices. The applied methodology consists on parametric studies to investigate the interdependence of different design parameters for natural ventilation in sheds and perform comparative analyzes. The procedure was based on CFD simulations and the verification of such results through experimental tests using wind tunnel. The analyses showed a good compatibility between the numerical and experimental results, obtaining a maximum difference of 10% between the two tools for most of the monitored points. The computer simulations showed that sheds performance is strongly influenced by the external wind speed and its incidence angles. In addition, it was noted that there are differences in design parameters for air extracting and capturing sheds and some cases showed a good performance in both situations. Finally, it was concluded that it is possible to optimize the use of natural ventilation through these devices, and these results support the practice of architectural design in determining appropriate settings.

Er-Rbib, Hanaâ 20 October 2015 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to design, evaluate the energetic performance and study the transient behavior during heating and startup operations of a reversible process Power To Gas process which is a solution for the integration of renewable electricity in the energy mix. Steady state models are first established in Aspen plus. Assessment of energetic performance shows that 66.7% of the electrical energy is stored as a Synthetic Natural Gas and the losses are caused mainly by the converting steps: the AC/DC, co-electrolysis and methanation conversions. Electricity production (Gas to Power) is performed by reversing the RSOC in SOFC mode fueled by synthesis gas (CO and H2) produced in a tri-reformer. This process is energetically autonomous and produces untapped heat which causes its 40% low efficiency. A study of the transient response during heat-up and start-up operations is conducted through the development of dynamic models of reversible co- electrolyzer, reactors and heat exchangers by using Matlab and Dymola softwares. The results allow to specify the energetic penalty and to review the architecture of predefined process in steady state. Several strategies have been studied to optimize the time and the energy consumption. It turned out that the RSOC is the slowest component (60% of total time) with the most energetic consumption (71% of total energy) because of the amount of gas used in heat-up operation and the significant time that must be respected in order to ensure an increase in temperature that prevents the cells deterioration.
