Exploring shippers, logistics service providers and their relationships in facilitating green logistics

Jazairy, Amer January 2018 (has links)
The logistics industry causes various harms to the environment. The literature assigns the main responsibility for alleviating such harms to two supply chain actors: shippers (logistics buyers) and logistics service providers (LSPs), which motivated studying them in this thesis. Specifically, this thesis explores and identifies how green logistics practices can be facilitated through aligning both actors throughout the different phases of their relationships. Two studies are compiled. The first study is based on five distinct cases -- three shippers and five LSPs, providing the basis for two papers: (i) one that analyses the institutional pressures (regulatory, market, competitive) on shippers to purchase green logistics services, and on LSPs to provide these services, and (ii) one that investigates the two actors’ stances on environmental concerns in the four key logistics purchasing phases (request for proposal, negotiations, contracting, execution), while proposing ways to align their efforts along such phases. The second study covers a single case of a dyadic relationship between a shipper and its LSP, handling enhancing logistics performance (cost efficiency, on-time delivery) in the early stages of their relationship. The findings indicate a general lack of regulatory pressure in driving shippers and LSPs to engage in green logistics, contrasted by a long-term influence of competitive pressure and a prevalent influence of market pressure. It was also found that both actors must put substantial efforts in the beginning of their relationships to reach a mutual business understanding, allowing performance and green enhancements. In the execution, it was found that both partners should regularly communicate performance metrics while modifying working standards, which would also support their green practices. For practitioners, insights are offered to align shippers’ and LSPs’ efforts within their relationships to attain positive performance and green outcomes. /
QC 20180223

The future of Walvisbay as a hub for South Central Africa : potentials and constraints

Simana, Angeline 11 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil) -- Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is aimed at determining whether the Port of Walvis Bay has what it takes to become a future hub port on the south-western coast of Africa. An equally important aspect of this study is to promote Walvis Bay as an economically viable option for trade in and out of Central and Southern Africa, and what proportion of traffic Walvis Bay could expect to capture from competing regional ports, especially the ports of Durban and Cape Town. The conclusions arrived at in this study indicate that the prospects for transforming Walvis Bay into a future hub port will depend on the increased involvement of the private sector, political and industrial stability, as well as regional integration to mention just a few. It is clear that Walvis Bay does not pose a competitive threat to the ports of Cape Town and Durban, and can only perform a complementary role.

The future of rail transport in South Africa in a deregulated transport environment

Goosen, E. (Eduan) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEcon)--Stellenbosch University, 1997. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: On 31 March 1990 the South African Transport Services (SATS) ceased to exist and on 1 April 1990 in its place emerged Transnet, a diversified transport company wholly owned by the South African government. Transnet was founded on the understanding that the government might eventually choose to sell it to the private sector. This study project report discusses the history and events leading up to the creation of Transnet. Thereafter the advantages and disadvantages of privatisation are identified, followed by international privatisation case studies which provide the basis for a discussion of some of the economic issues behind railway privatisation. The separation of infrastructure from operations, which was identified through the case studies as one of the most controversial and far-reaching concepts of railway privatisation, is also examined. Lastly, the study project focuses on the marketing strategy Spoornet ought to pursue in order to ensure sufficient high-value freight in the future.

How to increase the impact of disaster relief: a study of transportation rates, framework agreements and product distribution

Goßler, Timo, Wakolbinger, Tina, Nagurney, Anna, Daniele, Patrizia 04 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Due to restricted budgets of relief organizations, costs of hiring transportation service providers steer distribution decisions and limit the impact of disaster relief. To improve the success of future humanitarian operations, it is of paramount importance to understand this relationship in detail and to identify mitigation actions, always considering the interdependencies between multiple independent actors in humanitarian logistics. In this paper, we develop a game-theoretic model in order to investigate the influence of transportation costs on distribution decisions in long-term relief operations and to evaluate measures for improving the fulfillment of beneficiary needs. The equilibrium of the model is a Generalized Nash Equilibrium, which has had few applications in the supply chain context to date. We formulate it, utilizing the construct of a Variational Equilibrium, as a Variational Inequality and perform numerical simulations in order to study the effects of three interventions: an increase in carrier competition, a reduction of transportation costs and an extension of framework agreements. The results yield important implications for policy makers and humanitarian organizations (HOs). Increasing the number of preselected carriers strengthens the bargaining power of HOs and improves impact up to a certain limit. The limit is reached when carriers set framework rates equal to transportation unit costs. Reductions of transportation costs have a consistently positive, but decreasing marginal benefit without any upper bound. They provide the highest benefit when the bargaining power of HOs is weak. On the contrary, extending framework agreements enables most improvements when the bargaining power of HOs is strong.

A Mathematical Model for Optimizing Mini-Hub Locations of Distribution Centers in Urban Areas

Unknown Date (has links)
Logistics play a vital role in the prosperity of today’s cities, but current urban logistics delivery practices have proven problematic and to be causing various negative effects in cities. This study proposes an alternative method for delivering cargo with the leasing of a network of logistics hubs within urban areas for designated daily time intervals and handcart last-mile deliveries. The objective of the study is the development of a mathematical programming model for identifying the optimal number and locations of hubs for serving demand with the minimum cost, as well as the optimal times during the day for leasing the facilities, while also allocating hubs to customers. The problem is effectively solved by applying a Lagrangian relaxation and subgradient optimization approach. Numerical examples and a sensitivity analysis provide evidence of the robustness of the model and its ability to be effectively applied to address real problems. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Ganga, Gilberto Miller Devós 19 October 2004 (has links)
The objective of this work is to analyze the graduation Production Engineering teacher\'s view in a logistics professional profile. The base for this research is to compare a theoretical model in logistics knowledge - called knowledge tree - with the Production Engineering teacher\'s profile, identifying how is that influence in the logistics professional\'s formation. Besides, the ideal profile of the logistics professional is too emphasized according to the same teacher\'s view. The used method is the survey evaluation research. The general results pointed that the teachers of production engineering graduation courses have a quite effective contribution in the logistics professional\'s formation. However, it is necessary to emphasize that the teachers\'great influence in the logistics professional\'s profile is due the brazilian formation in the engineering area.
