The dissertation offers a comparative reading of Eben Venter's Horrelpoot (2006) and Joseph Conrad's A Heart of Darkness (1902). The aim of this investigation is to establish whether the Afrikaans novel is overshadowed by the classical text, or whether it is an independent text in its own right. Following on a short reception study of reviews and articles published on Venter's latest fictional work, Horrelpoot, is read as an apocalyptic and / or dystopic novel. Whereas Conrad's novel is set in the Congo, Eben Venter opts for a fictionalized post-apartheid South African society riddled with social problems and a complete lack of infrastructure. The ideological notions pertaining to white South African fearing a black future form the crux of Venter's analysis of the contemporary white psyche in South Africa. From an intertextual point of view Venter's re-writing of Conrad's classic is a clear example of how, according to Kristeva's definition, one sign system is transposed into another. What is the result of this for the reception of the contemporary novel? Is one able to read Venter's novel without having to rely on Conrad's novel as intertext? An overview of the different theoretical views on intertextuality is also provided. The apocalyptic vision in Venter's novel is also examined against the background of a series of related novels in South Africa that deal with the same issue. In the 1980s apocalyptic novels focused primarily on apartheid society as symbolizing a dystopic, amoral and oppressive society that needed to be overthrown in favour of a more utopian non-racial society. Venter's novel places a question mark behind such an assumption as it shows that living in a post-apartheid society could even be worse and more dictatorial.

Poor quality seed is the major constraint limiting both the productivity of potato crops and the expansion of the potato industry in Vietnam. Despite numerous attempts to establish a certified seed system, the most practical solution is to import clean foundation seed of the desired variety and physiological age. With imports from Europe and North America proving to be immature and too expensive, Western Australia (WA) has emerged as a potential source of high quality seed. While seed imports from WA are unique in that the varieties imported have been selected by researchers in Vietnam as being suited to the agro-ecological environment in the Red River Delta (RRD), no assessment of the economic benefits to smallholder potato farmers from the use of WA potato seed has been undertaken. In 2006/08, the yield and profitability of three potato varieties Eben, KT3 and Atlantic in two locations were compared where the crops had been derived from new seed imported from WA (VN0), seed derived from crops cultivated in the RRD after one generation (VN1) and two generations (VN2). There was a significant difference in the yield produced between the three different seed sources but not between the locations. For all varieties, and in both years, the yield decreased with the number of multiplications in Vietnam. Furthermore, the marketable yield declined significantly from the first crop (VN0) to the third crop (VN2). The decline in yield and tuber quality with each successive generation was associated with an increase in PVY and PVX infection. Not unexpectedly, differences in yield and marketable yield between the seed generations had a significant impact on the gross income for each variety. / VN0 seed of all varieties produced the highest gross income (VND 2.4 to 4.1 M/sao) compared to VN1 (VND 1.9 to 3.1 M/sao) which was significantly higher than VN2 (VND 1.4 to 2.4 M/sao). However, while high quality seed is more productive, it is also more expensive. As a result, significant differences were observed between the seed costs. VN0 seed was almost two times more expensive (VND 10,500 – 11,000 per kg) than VN1 and VN2 seed (VND 6,000 – 6,500 per kg). Despite the higher costs, VN0 seed provided the highest net incomes compared to VN1 which was significantly higher than VN2. Farmers who retained seed received a higher net income (VND 0.13 – 0.6 M/sao) than those who did not retain seed. Ways to improve the accessibility of affordable, high quality potato seed to farmers in the RRD are discussed.

Die Bedeutung von deutschen Abtönungspartikeln sowie der Äquivalenzgrad möglicher funktionaler spanischer Entsprechungen sind bisher hauptsächlich auf Grundlage der persönlichen Einschätzungen und der Sprachkompetenz einzelner Forscher unter Verwendung von selbst kreierten Sprachbeispielen, Korpora und Übersetzungsvergleichen analysiert und beurteilt worden. Dabei lassen sich methodische Unzulänglichkeiten und Divergenzen in den Ergebnissen der Forscher feststellen. Diese werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit am Beispiel der Abtönungspartikel eben herausgestellt. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Unzulänglichkeiten und Divergenzen ist es Ziel dieser Arbeit, anhand einer Online-Rezeptionsstudie unter deutschen und spanischen Muttersprachlern zu überprüfen, wie die Abtönungspartikel eben sowie ausgewählte mögliche spanische Entsprechungen von einer größeren Gruppe von Muttersprachlern aufgefasst werden und inwiefern diese Ergebnisse mit den Forschungsergebnissen der kontrastiven Studien übereinstimmen.

Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / In this thesis I explore the possibility of reading Foxtrot van die vleiseters by Eben Venter through the philosophy of the carnivalesque and grotesque realism, as put forward by the Russian language philosopher, Mikhail Bakhtin. An overview of the theory of grotesque realism is given in chapter 1. In chapter 2 some of the main aspects of the apartheidsregime are discussed, after which the most important principles of grotesque realism are applied to the novel. A chapter is devoted to each of the following broad categories: the distinction between a high, official order and a low, unofficial order and the consequences when the official order is lifted; the images of the grotesque body; and lastly, the culture of laughter and celebration. The salient points will be gathered together in the conclusion.

The question of how to use your forces to successfully defeat your enemy is as old as warfare itself. Today maneuver warfare is the leading theory in the west, but it can´t explain the human experience of combat and how it effects the outcome of battle. The purpose of this essay is to analyze the human perspective of combat to see if it can explain the outcome of battle on the tactical level, where a smaller force successfully defeats a larger one.  This essay will apply Jim Storr´s theory of tactical success to the successful assault on Fort Eben Emael by German forces in the spring of 1940 in the form of a case study, to test whether it can explain this problem. Surprise was a vital success factor for the Germans, facing larger, well-fortified Belgian defenders. Storr highlights the human perspective of combat, and that surprise and shock can lead to collapse of the organization and the will to fight at the tactical level. The results indicate that Storr´s theory can explain the outcome of a battle thru the human perspective where surprise and shock lead to organizational collapse.
