Determining functionality and living patterns: a phosphate analysis of two prehistoric structures in Río Blanco, Ecuador

Unknown Date (has links)
Archaeologists have identified many prehistoric structures affiliated with the Manteño culture (500 CE to 1532 CE) of coastal Ecuador, but the function of those constructions is rarely understood. As part of an ongoing project by Florida Atlantic University to explore the function of these buildings, I conducted systematic soil phosphate testing in and around two archaeological structures and, for ethnoarchaeological comparison, four contemporary households. The two prehistoric structures are located 200 meters from each other and on two different river terraces within the same river valley. They are part of a larger site (C4-084). I found clear spatial patterning in phosphate concentrations in and around the archaeological structures. The concentrations were higher inside the structures, while outside they decreased with distance from the structure. Statistical testing and spatial analysis have suggested the two structures were used for different purposes. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Vélez, Cecilia I. 15 November 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between University- Business Cooperation and its effect on Innovative Business Performance. The study had three purposes. The first one, to examine the effect of the cooperation between university and company on the innovative business performance. The second, determine whether the size of the company and R&D expenditures are factors that influence companies to develop cooperation with universities for innovation. The third was to analyze, based on the results of the research, public policies aimed at fostering cooperation between the university and the company. The population under study in the research was constituted by the companies of Ecuador present in the 2010 Economic Census, which corresponds to 467 302 companies in the sectors of manufacturing, mining and quarrying, construction, commerce and services. The sample was stratified, by sector and province, was 2 815 in 24 provinces of Ecuador. In the research, the National Survey of Innovation Activities 2013, aligned with the international standards for innovation activities of the OSLO Manual and the National Survey of Science Activities, Technology 2013, developed by the Ministry of Health, was used as a research instrument and database. National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, INEC, and by the National Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senescyt. The methodology used in the present study was of quantitative nature and corresponded to the field of econometrics, and three different models were presented to obtain the answer of each one of the research purposes. Therefore, the first hypothesis was solved with the application of two models tobit and probit, and the second and third hypotheses with a logit model. As a result of the econometric application in its different models, it was obtained that university - business cooperation positively influences the development of business innovation. Likewise, the influence of the size of the companies in the university - company relationship was evidenced, but this double helix does not present a relation with the investment in R&D of the companies in Ecuador. Keywords: Cooperation University - Business, Business Development, Tobit, Logit, Probit. / Tesis

Legitimacy in a persistent democracy : Ecuador 1996-2007

Osorio-Ramirez, Freddy 05 1900 (has links)
The present dissertation reconstructs the notion of legitimacy in Ecuador between 1996 and 2007 in order to re-think our measurements and understanding of Latin American democracies. Empirically, the analysis is centered on the country`s puzzling tendency to survive institutional volatility, bad economic performance and social unrest, while the theoretical section underlines the importance of the vertical and horizontal participatory components of legitimacy. After exploring different plausible explanations of Ecuador`s puzzling mixture of political turmoil and regime endurance, this dissertation concludes that legitimacy helped democracy to endure in Ecuador. The main conclusion is that the horizontal components of political participation and the enactment of democratic values by social movements as well as new political parties played a key role in the survival of democracy. The dissertation contributes to the democratization literature by encompassing the normative elements of democracy, while at the same time contributes to democratic theory by pushing further the boundaries of a notion and a case that requires further attention.

In search of a nobler past : incanismo and community tourism in Saraguro, Ecuador

Jenson, Jason, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2011 (has links)
Historical notions of Noble Savagery have been contemporarily translated and massified in popular culture so that traits that “Indigenous People” are believed to possess, are conflated with those of the Noble Savage of lore and taken for granted as truth. The Noble Savage is the embodiment of the tourist’s notion of the authentic; the more traits Indigenous people are assumed to share with the western notion of the Noble Savage the more authentic they are deemed, and the more attractive they are to the visiting tourist. In Saraguro tourism and incanismo mutually validate and reinforce each other. Tourists valorize their own preconceived notions of indigenous culture, and in turn validate incanismo through participation in Incaic cultural performances. Neo-Incans are objectifying and consuming their own dreams though the tourist gaze, and the resultant cultural commodification and the (re)appropriation of a nobler past has led to cultural revalorization of an indigenous elite. / viii, 213 leaves; 29 cm
