Translating Editor COI Values to Action: The Missing Link

Jaffer, Anushka January 2018 (has links)
Introduction: Conflict of interest (COI) exists when an individual in the publication process has a competing interest that could compromise their publication process responsibility. COI is commonly associated with authors and less so with editors. Many organizations (e.g. World Association of Medical Editors (WAME)) provide resources and recommendations for addressing COIs at medical journals. However, there are no data describing journals’ utilization of these resources for editor COI policy development or adoption, and little data on the value of editor COI policies. This study aimed to understand current editor COI practices and editors’ perceptions of COI policies, along with barriers to their implementation. Methods: An online survey developed in LimeSurveyTM was distributed to editorial board members of oncology and health care sciences and services journals to measure respondents’ attitudes about COI definitions and features and COI policy experience; barriers to implementing editor COI policies; and editors’ perceptions of COI policies. Frequency analysis of survey data was conducted. Free-text responses were summarized. Results: Response rate was 20.2% (66/327), and comprised complete and partial survey respondents. The majority of respondents were editors-in-chief. Overall, respondents agreed that defined WAME COI domains were important components of an editor COI policy. Nearly 50% of respondents belonged to journals with existing editor COI policies, which they continued to use. Nearly 25% were unaware of the current editor COI policy status at their journal. Few implementation barriers were identified, the most common being challenges with verification of disclosures. Overall, respondents did not report strong attitudes in favour of or against editor COI policies, but respondents agreed that journals with an editor COI policy were more credible and trustworthy. Conclusion: This study shows that editor COI policy development and utilization is not a universal standard of practice and suggests that recognition of the value of an editor COI policy may not be widespread among editorial board members. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / Conflict of interest (COI) can play an important role in the stages of getting research published. However, COI of journal editors has not been studied. The aim of this study was to find whether COI policies for editors exist and to probe editors’ perceptions about the policies. The study found that editors believe COI policies are important but for the most part, whether a journal has an editor policy or not, does not affect their perception of the journal’s validity, quality, and transparency. This study also suggests there are few barriers to implementing an editor COI policy. Additional research is needed to demonstrate the role COI plays in the research enterprise with regard to research integrity, and journal credibility and trustworthiness.

Supporting Direct Markup and Evaluation of Students' Projects On-line

Vastani, Hussein Kamaluddin 23 August 2004 (has links)
Automated grading systems have been researched at various universities for several years. Numerous systems have been developed that automate the process of grading by compiling, executing and testing the students submitted source code. However, such systems are mostly written as UNIX scripts and are restricted to performing one kind of activity. The instructors or teaching assistants have to resort to other methods in order to provide their feedback to the students. The core of this thesis is to research a TA feedback mechanism which will streamline the grading process for the professors and teaching assistants. A web-based grading tool has been developed that allows course staff to enter comments for students' programs directly through a web browser. The interface provides for full direct-manipulation editing of comments, which are then immediately viewable by students when they look up assignment results. Such an interface also has potential to support peer grading of assignments. Teaching assistants of introductory programming level courses were interviewed to learn about the different grading methods they use and were asked their opinion of our new grading interface. TAs were also asked to grade assignments using the traditional paper method as well as the computer using our new grading tool for comparison. Finally, an anonymous survey was sent out to various computer science faculties in different universities to gather information about the expectations they have with respect to TA grading activities for programming assignments and the learning outcomes that these professors desire for their students. / Master of Science

Utvecklingsverktyg för spelmotor

Palm, Andreas January 2014 (has links)
This paper examines if Netbeans RCP is a suitable platform for creating a campaign editor for a game engine on. The work is part of a larger project where a game engine for Android phones is being developed. The campaign editor must be able to modify and create files in an XML-format that the engine will then use. It must also be able to create new material for the engine from images. All of this functionality must be usable on multiple operating systems. The decision to use a platform rather than implement everything manually was made to speed up the development and increase the quality of the campaign editor. Other platforms and programs were also briefly examined to see if these could have been suitable as well. Netbeans RCP was determined to be a suitable platform for creating a campaign editor because it provides functions relevant to the campaign editor that are usable on multiple operating systems, and the functionality implemented in the program was usable on every tested operating system.

A conquista do sagrado - jornalistas como editores de livros / A conquista do sagrado - jornalistas como editores de livros

Costa, Renata Carvalho da 09 October 2009 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the working process of journalists who edit books, whether publishing company owners or hired editors. Based on a nondirective questionnaire, interviews were applied to book editors who declared themselves as journalists by academic education or professional experience, and editors majored in book editing as well. The interviews were examined and categorized by themes, settled by content analysis techniques. This research allows to assert that journalists, even when working in other field as book editing, still feel themselves related to journalism, see book as an object to be venerated and have a different perception of book production from traditional editors\' perspective, in which the journalist-editors claim to use their news background.

Frege IDE nad JetBrains MPS / Frege IDE with JetBrains MPS

Satmári, István January 2018 (has links)
Frege is an open-source project which brings the popular functional programming language Haskell to the Java ecosystem. JetBrains MPS is an open-source language workbench which allows users to design a new language and build an integrated development environment with a projectional (structured) editor for the created language. In this work we analyzed Frege grammar and created an IDE based on MPS that assists developers with writing code in the Frege language. Our environment includes a set of intuitive editors for editing Frege syntax, provides a simple type checking and implements code generators for the Frege language. Aim of the Frege IDE is its usability. Additionally, the thesis compares projectional editors with the more common plain-text IDEs, such as Eclipse, and evaluates whether they offer any advantage for editing purely functional programming languages.

Knihovna pro editor diagramů ve Fluteru / Flutter diagram editor library

Pikora, Jindřich January 2021 (has links)
Diagrams are useful to visualize and design complex structures and relationships. They are frequently used in areas like software engineering or data flow management. There are a plethora of tools that allow a user to draw a diagram; however, they represent a diagram as an image. On the contrary, there are tools specifically designed to utilize a model behind the diagram, but they often lack in the area of user interaction and user interface. The thesis aims to try to bridge this gap, by providing a multiplatform implementation of diagram editing library in Flutter. By doing so, the library allows developers to focus on the utilization of the underlying diagram model. This will support the creation of new applications that offer modern user interface and utilize the diagram model. The library is not tailored to a single use-case or a diagram type. Instead, it focuses on general support of view or edit diagram operations. As Flutter can run in multiple environments, like mobile phones or web browsers, the library is designed to provide a user friendly experience for all of these platforms. The library design allows easy implementation and application in different areas, use-cases. This is demonstrated on two proof-of-concept diagram editing applications that use the library. 1
