The Implied Editor: A Theory of Craft and PoeticsSelph, Mary 01 January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation advances a new theory of the editor. Editors are pervasively influential for shaping our evaluations of all kinds of work, from literature, to news, to scholarship, and beyond. I test my theory on editorial influence in little magazines, providing close readings, recovering historical contexts, and identifying a wide variety of rhetorical affordances available to little magazines’ editors. I draw on rhetorical narrative theory, most especially the “implied author” concept, which I build on in order to theorize an “implied editor.” I furthermore demonstrate that understanding the authored and edited texts as distinct is important for teasing apart the full breadth of editorial work.
This dissertation also proposes a new model of editorship. My model captures (1) the role of the editor, which is a simultaneously author- and audience-oriented role; (2) the importance of poetics; and (3) the dual-streamed creative role of editors. As such, my model captures dynamics not noted elsewhere and enables us to address such questions as: (1) How does editorship differ from authorship? (2) How can we think of the relationship among author, editor, and audience? and (3) How does the ethics of editorship differ from that of authorship?
This dissertation further tests my model in conversation with a contemporary little magazine, issue 23 of A Public Space. In so doing, I explore how APS’s editor uses editorial textual resources, some of which overlap with authorial textual resources and some of which diverge from them. I also test my theory against the editorial role in Harlem Renaissance little magazines to elucidate the distinctive ways in which editors manifest their respective magazines’ purposes, both implicitly and explicitly. In so doing, these editors reveal why we must view the magazines as distinct and holistic entities with potentially competing priorities rather than merely collections of (then) up-and-coming writers and their discrete works. My model of editorship highlights Fire!!’s complex editorial significance. My theory of editorship and its application to these little magazines demonstrates the significance of editorship, particularly in relation to the crafting of uniquely edited texts.

First Person Plural in Letters to the Editor in Two Post-Colonial ContextsMcGarry, Theresa M., Michieka, Martha M. 01 January 2019 (has links)
First person plural in letters to the editor in two post-colonial contexts In writing letters to the editor, speech community members position themselves in a way that simultaneously helps construct both the public discourse on certain issues and the writer’s identity. An important tool in such identity construction in various contexts has been shown to be the first-person plural pronoun. The purpose of this study is to explain writers’ uses of first-person plural pronouns to construct identity in letters to the editor in the 21st-century post-colonial context in a Kenyan and a Sri Lankan newspaper. Assuming a variational pragmatics perspective, we analyze the pronouns to determine the intended reference and the relation to structural features of the letter and assigned responsibility for situational problems and solutions. The results indicate that despite marked variation between the Kenyan and Sri Lankan letters in how explicitly solutions are called for and responsible actors are named, first-person plural pronoun usage exhibits strong similarity. In both datasets, slightly over half the pronouns reference a national identity, which accords with the most prominent topic area by far being government form, policy, and services and the behavior of politicians and government officials. Among the other half, ambiguous reference is the most prominent category. Ambiguous and shifting use can mitigate directness in assigning blame and expectation, thus avoiding the construction of an identity judged unacceptable confrontational by local norms. Moreover, since interpretation of ambiguous language requires more participation from the reader, the assignment of responsibility becomes a more collaborative activity, reinforcing the community membership of the writer.

Object Oriented Development Of A Mathematical Equation EditorStahl, Levi Russell 06 August 2005 (has links)
Computers since their inception have been used to solve engineering problems. Toward support of next-generation, customizable, generalized software, a mathematical equation editor has been designed, developed, and tested using object oriented (OO) programming techniques. The motivating purpose of this equation editor is to allow a user to graphically define mathematical equations to be solved in a computational partial differential equation-based problem solving environment. The OO scripting language Python was used in conjunction with the OO GUI toolkit Qt to create the editor. Analysis of the underlying abstraction of a general equation yielded the key concept of an information-holding bounding box. Such boxes hierarchically contain every character and symbol in an equation. Specific rules were formulated to spatially arrange a set of boxes into a properly formatted equation. Robust insertion logic of alphanumeric characters, mathematical symbols, and common function names was implemented for intuitive point-and-click equation building.

Projectional editor for domain-specific languages / Projectional editor for domain-specific languagesDvořák, Ondřej January 2013 (has links)
Title: Projectional editor for domain-specific languages Author: Ondřej Dvořák Department: Department of Distributed and Dependable Systems Supervisor: RNDr. Michal Malohlava Abstract: Programming is a craft requiring a good tooling. One of tools selected as crucial for software development is an integrated development environment (IDE) that allows to maintain most of the general-purpose languages. Domain-specific languages grow in a popularity last years, thus it is necessary to support them by IDE as well. Not just a textual or graphical form of DSL sources is suitable for their maintenance, so does the combination of them. One of the promising approaches is represented by a novel method called a projectional editing. Its objective is to show different visualization forms of program source code, combine and manipulate with them at one place. The thought is typically realized by a projectional editor. In this thesis we design a projectional editor for domain-specific languages and provide its experimental implementation. It analyzes potential approaches to a projectional editing and designs their suitable realization in Microsoft Visual Studio. It provides a universal implementation of a projectional editor on the top of Visual Studio as well as on the top of a standalone application. Moreover, it supports...

Tradições discursivas e modalidade: reflexões sobre a trajetória do gênero carta do editor em jornais paulistas do século XIX ao início do século XX / Discursive traditions and modality: reflections about the letter to the editor genre trajectory in São Paulos newspapers in the period of nineteenth-century to earlier twentieth-century.Rodrigues, Rafaela Baracat Ribeiro 29 March 2011 (has links)
In this research, we carried out a study of discursive genre in a diachronic perspective, looking for the organization and linguistic strategies which are shown on it. We analyzed a social practice of journalistic sphere, the letter to the editor, with the objective of verifying constitutive elements and possible transformations of the genre throughout the history. Especially, we observed linguistic structures which maintain discursive regularities in this genre of the written press, in the period of nineteenth-century to earlier twentieth-century. To illustrate it, we supported the study on written media works, focusing not only on the establishment of journalism context but also on discursive genre and discursive traditions works with the aim of anchoring the analysis of textual features that ensure the continuity and contribute to the identification of the genre as typical of journalistic institution. Through this situated social practice emerges linguistic resources which orient the meaning production and help participants to look for, in some way, influencing their interlocutors to achieve their interactional purposes. Among these resources, we pointed out the adverbial modality. We formed basis on pragmatic and discourse analysis about this category to link it to the production of letters to the editor. To the intended analysis, we selected three São Paulos newspaper copies: O Farol Paulistano, Correio Paulistano e A Provínca de S. Paulo/ O Estado de S. Paulo, and conducted a survey of linguistic occurrences in the textual construction to verify possible elements which remain or modify, drawing a parallel with topical texts. The results indicated that, in the historical course of the letter to the editor, we could found thematic, compositional and functional regularities of latest centuries still present in this written media production. The results, demonstrated by the modality analysis, also pointed out this linguistic category as an element present in the configuration of the genre, revealing the way of construction of social assessments and ideological expressions through the instantiation and the meaning effects which could be built up through this discursive strategy.

Do papel ao digital: como as novas tecnologias desafiam a função do editor de livros de história / From paper to e-book: how the new technologies challenge the history book publisher´s rolePinsky, Luciana 15 March 2013 (has links)
New leading actors are entering the scene, and the publisher, who became preeminent as of the 19th century, faces a challenge to his role. The objective of this research is to study the book publisher\'s role. To this end, it presents the conception of a book along history and its role in society. It makes an attempt to define the contours of the History book and provides a general dimension of the book market in Brazil and in the world. The field work consists of non-oriented interviews with 12 Brazilian and foreign book professionals. The conclusions show that we are currently living in the era of the digital incunables, in which there are some experiments but little certainty as to how the book of the future will be.

Generating programming environments with integrated text and graphics for VLSI design systemsMcCaskill, George Alexander January 1987 (has links)
The constant improvements in device integration, the development of new technologies and the emergence of new design techniques call for flexible, maintainable and robust software tools. The generic nature of compiler-compiler systems, with their semi-formal specifications, can help in the construction of those tools. This thesis describes the Wright editor generator which is used in the synthesis of language-based graphical editors (LBGEs). An LBGE is a programming environment where the programs being manipulated denote pictures. Editing actions can be specified through both textual and graphical interfaces. Editors generated by the Wright system are specified using the formalism of attribute grammars. The major example editor in this thesis, Stick-Wright, is a design entry system for the construction of VLSI circuits. Stick-Wright is a hierarchical symbolic layout editor which exploits a combination of text and graphics in an interactive environment to provide the circuit designer with a tool for experimenting with circuit topologies. A simpler system, Pict-Wright: a picture drawing system, is also used to illustrate the attribute grammar specification process. This thesis aims to demonstrate the efficacy of formal specification in the generation of software-tools. The generated system Stick-Wright shows that a text/graphic programming environment can form the basis of a powerful VLSI design tool, especially with regard to providing the designer with immediate graphical feedback. Further applications of the LBGE generator approach to system design are given for a range of VLSI design activities.
