The education of youth and adults: a study from the initial enrollment declines in the period 2000-2012

Souza, Marcio Rocha de 29 August 2013 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the indexes on the falls of initial enrollment in the courses Youth and Adults in Brazil from 2000 to 2012, with emphasis from the year 2008 after the reorganization of these courses in the city of São Paulo, sponsored by the Municipal education. The conceptsthat underlie our analyzes were the work, education and contradictions, analyzed under the capital. In research to expand the scale of observation, proved declines in enrollments nation wide. From the observation of these indices declines inenrollments in adult education, has become the focus of research to identify conditions and determinants that drove these declines in enrollment in these courses for youngsters and adults. We seek to support the central hypothesis to the problem in two parameters. The first research on the quantitative approach, the frequency of the indices mentioned by official institutes census and statistics consulted and analyzed unde rthe methodology of content analysis, according to Bardin(1977) and the second parameter qualitatively by the presence in the data emerged the empirical survey in the field. Dialectical materialism was the epistemological basis that guided the central thought in the analysis, oriented Lefebvre(1969, 2006). Results as determining tendency, emerged the growth in supply of work papers signed, from this research. The research raises the discussion of liberal thought and its dominant discourses, which have sustained some actions of municipal, state or federal education policy for the courses of this type of education. Tries to uncover the problem presented in the research, since its foundation, considering the complex social relations that are established in current societies.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcos Leite Rocha.pdf: 1084298 bytes, checksum: f038bc8b4eaa22132da7ef4ef7db96ca (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-09-28 / The discussions presented in this study concern the interface between Special Education and Education for Youth and Adults (EJA). It particularly investigates the schooling processes of deaf students enrolled in regular classes of EJA at an elementary school of the Municipal Education System in the City of Vitória, ES, Brazil. Since the 1980s, the school has been a unique space for deaf students because it gives professional users of Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) the opportunity to both translate/interpret the classes and provide special education assistance. In order to base our discussion, we adopted a set of studies and papers on Special Education and Education for Youth and Adults enrolled in conventional classrooms, linked to propositions of Sociology of Absences and Sociology of Emergencies by Boaventura de Souza Santos. For building and systematizing the data in the research field, ethnography was used. The study is organized in six chapters, which together show the place for the researcher/ s discourse, the theoretical concepts adopted in the study; the methodological history of research, the education policy for death people implemented in the municipality of Vitória; the routine of the school investigated. The results point to the importance of analyzing the interface of Special Education in Education for Youth and Adults so that the schooling processes of deaf young and adult students in regular EJA classrooms in the City of Vitoria are discussed; and to the need of considering alternatives that provide deaf young and adult students with the services and support established by the national and local bilingual education policy from the school inclusion perspective / As problematizações apresentadas neste trabalho dizem respeito à interface da modalidade da Educação Especial na Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA).

This theme was chosen because of the student?s desires to learn that content, enabling to search where is the origin of the various difficulties encountered by them in calculating areas of plane figures and to get applied in their daily lives. The choice of this teaching modality comes from the challenge of how to work this content with a very heterogeneous group, both in age and in the motivation that led them to attend the classrooms of young and adult education. This fact causes a significant change in the methodology used by the professor in relation to the same applied in regular education. To understand all this process it is necessary to know a little of young and adult education in Brazil, its normative aspects and the historical importance of knowing how to calculate areas of flat figures. Through a questionnaire, we identified the young and adult education professor's profile, how this type of education is administered by the government and how professionals deal with such different student profiles. With this information, together with the analyzes of the questions answered by the students, we conclude that the difficulty of assigning correctly the units of area and length measurements is due to the difficulty of the student to relate the mathematical content learned in school to their daily lives. In some of the issues applied to students we had to allow the use of the calculator due to the difficulty that students have to perform at least one of the four arithmetic operations / Esse trabalho ? o resultado de uma an?lise qualitativa e quantitativa sobre os problemas encontrados no ensino de ?rea de figuras planas na EJA e que, mesmo sendo uma atividade presente no dia-a-dia deles, ainda ? um problema.

Understanding physical activity behavior in inclusive physical education

Jin, Jooyeon 21 June 2012 (has links)
Physical education is important to promote physical activity of adolescents with and without disabilities, but many adolescents are not active during physical education classes. Innovative instructional strategies are imperative to change this phenomenon, but it will be challenging to develop effective instructional strategies without thorough understanding of students' physical activity behavior in physical education settings. Two studies were conducted to comprehensively understand physical activity behavior of adolescents with and without disabilities in inclusive physical education classes at middle schools. The first study investigated the utility of the integrative theory to predict students' physical activity intentions and behavior at the intrapersonal level. A total of 577 participants, including 24 adolescents' with disabilities, were recruited from 8 middle schools in Korea. In a prospective design, participants' psychosocial constructs and physical activity data were collected by survey questionnaires and electronic pedometers. A multilevel (design-based) structural equation modeling using maximum likelihood estimation with robust standard error correction found that students' attitudes, subjective norms, and barrier-efficacy significantly predicted students' goal intentions. Students' implementation intentions and task-efficacy were significant predictors of physical activity behavior. In addition, implementation intentions completely mediated the relationship between goal intentions and physical activity behavior. The second study investigated three conceptual models, including process-product model, student mediation model, and ecological model, to predict students' physical activity behavior at the interpersonal and environmental levels. A total of 13 physical educators teaching inclusive physical education and their 503 students, including 22 students with disabilities, were recruited from 8 middle schools in Korea. A series of multilevel (model-based) regressions with maximum likelihood estimation showed that the ecological model was the most effective model in prediction of students' physical activity behavior. Specifically, it was found that teachers' teaching behavior and students' implementation intentions were significant predictors of the students' physical activity behavior when interacted with gender, disability, lesson contents, instructional models, and class locations. In conclusion, findings suggest that intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental predictors provide a systematic account in the understanding of students' physical activity behavior in physical education settings. Future studies should consider all three factors simultaneously to effectively develop instructional strategies that promote physical activity of adolescents' with and without disabilities in physical education classes. / Graduation date: 2013

Grade nine students and policy : perspectives of the school nutrition and physical activity environment

Brooks, Kimberlee January 2012 (has links)
The school environment is often the focus of healthy eating and physical activity policies intended to address childhood obesity. However, students are usually excluded from the development and implementation of such policies. The purpose of this study was to explore grade nine student perspectives regarding: supports and barriers to healthy eating and physical activity at school; strategies for improving the school nutrition and physical activity environments; and potential student contribution to the development, implementation, and evaluation of school-based policies. A qualitative approach utilizing focus groups and photovoice with 30 students from two schools in southern Alberta was used to collect data. Major themes included: access to healthy food choices; teacher influences; peer influences; access to physical activity opportunities; impact of marketing; and conflicting messages. Students can provide valuable insights to policy development, implementation and evaluation. Implications for future research and policy development are reviewed. / xi, 179 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm

Gatto, Carmen Isabel January 2008 (has links)
This study examines the process of defining the Operational Guidelines for the Education of Young People and Adult and the participation of agencies of the official recontextualizing field. It deals with two issues of the Guidelines: minimum age for admission in the courses and certification for the EJA. Bernstein's concept of classification was used to describe and analyze the relationships between agencies of the official recontextualizing field covering also the pedagogic recontextualizing field and presenting the positions of the representatives of those agencies about the issues. The participant observation method was used to collect information on five occasions during the month of August 2007, and from August to October 2008. The intersection of arguments was observed in each meeting identifying four positions: a favorable one; an opposing one; a no consensus one and a lack of position considering the focused issues. The study reveals a democratic process of defining norms witch will provide reflection over public policies for the Basic Education. Bernstein's concept of competence model and performance model were employed to analyze the National Certification Examination Skills in Education for Youth and Adults (ENCCEJA), demonstrating that it is not an examination of competence but a verification of the performance of the participants.

The latter considers the “should be” as the ideal to be achieved thereby not focussing on the concrete practices of this educational method. That is why I asked myself the following question: to what extent can one produce EYA concepts that are beyond diagnosis and prescription? Such an issue made me see the sociopoetics as the most appropriate research method to investigate this topic since it is a philosophical practice whose aim is to help the target group to produce confetos (concept plus affection) about the topics it focuses on. So as to achieve that, it transforms the target group into co-researchers, using a variety of languages that enhance the ability of the “whole body” to produce knowledge and allows the field research to occur as workshops. In my research, I used three groups to address that issue, two of which being composed of teachers and one of students. The teachers and students belong to two public schools in Fortaleza that provide education for youth and adults. I used several techniques which dealt with several languages. Through them, the co-researchers related the EYA to the following items: food, drink, myth, dance, music, weapon and embroidery. In addition, they related EYA to the subtopic of my creations in EYA. The main results found about EYA are more related to the action, diversity and difference than the concepts of diagnosis and prescription present in their official conceptions. What brought me to that conclusion were mainly the confetos (concept plus affection) of EYA-infinite diversity, EYA-embroidery, EYA-mask and EYA-improving, EYA-vital energy, EYA-empty, EYA-world-wandering, EYA-motor-perceptor and EYA-calm down, EYA-transgression, student-transgressor, student-devourer, student-dolls of different colors, EYA-pain in the neck’ book, staircase- teachers, EYA-mandala and my creations in EYA-question that led me to such conclusions.
