In 2002, the United Nations designates 2005-2014 as the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. In China, Education for Sustainable Development [ESD] has been recognized as an important component in the new educational reform. However, there is an implementation gap between government policy and classroom practice. Teachers play a pivotal role in curriculum implementation. Therefore, knowing what teachers' think about ESD is the first step towards understanding the implementation of ESD. / Key words. sustainable development; education for sustainable development; teacher's belief; geography teacher; instrument development; values; teaching belief; China / Quantitative research methods supported by interview are used in this research. After analyzing relevant literature on ESD and interviewing 16 Beijing geography teachers, it is found that the ESD beliefs comprised two components: sustainability values [VESD] and teaching beliefs of ESD [TESD]. Based on ESD principles and some environmental beliefs instruments, a first draft of VESD instrument was developed and piloted among Yinchuan and Beijing geography teachers. A second draft was then developed and tested with over 300 Guangzhou and Changchun geography teachers. The final VESD instrument with four dimensions has been found with a stable structure and acceptable reliability and validity. These four dimensions are respect and care for the community of life; ecological integrity; social and economic justice; democracy, nonviolence and peace. / The aim of this research is to develop an effective and easy-to-use ESD instrument to reveal teacher's beliefs about ESD. In the process of developing the instrument, it is essential to study: What are teachers' ESD beliefs? Are ESD beliefs made up environmental values and teaching beliefs? What are the structure and content of the values and teaching beliefs of ESD? / The TESD instrument is found to have three factors with good reliability and validity. These three factors are namely: relevance to daily life, student's need in the future, and integrated teaching. / With these two instruments which can be used to tap teacher's ESD beliefs in China, researchers interested in ESD implementation can conduct future researches on teachers' beliefs about ESD and the potential implementation problems. / Adviser: Chi Chung Lam. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 68-03, Section: A, page: 0867. / Electronic reproduction. Educação ambiental e mobilização social: formação de catadores na grande São Paulo / Environmental education and social mobilization : education of informal reciclers in the Metropolitan Region of Greater São Paulo

Baeder, Angela Martins 09 October 2009 (has links)
This study analyzes the collective capacity building activities of informal recyclers, conducted at the Metropolitan Region of Greater São Paulo, between 1997 and 2008, with the purpose of identifying elements to support the participatory creation of sustainable solutions to social and environmental solid waste problems in urban areas. These educational actions are embedded in a period of increasing dialogues and actions related to Environmental Education, focused on the social control of public and institutional policies for participatory environmental management. The analysis of the educational activities has required a survey focused on the historical context, the thinking and acting of Environmental Education; the life and working conditions of the recyclers; the social and environmental issues regarding solid waste and the potential and challenges of selective waste collection as an alternative within solidarity economy. The research analyses the educational activities related to the organization of the selective waste collection in the squatter settlement Pedra sobre Pedra, at the Southern periphery of São Paulo city; the mobilization of solid waste collection groups in the city, at the Fórum Recicla São Paulo, a social mobilization of recyclers; the Capacity Building for the first Selection Centers of the Programa de Coleta Seletiva Solidária de São Paulos implementaed in 2003; the strengthening of the recyclers and their dialogue with the public authorities, through the Participatory Sustainable Waste Management project. These educational activities are theoretically based upon multiple references and upon the comprehension of the commitment to building autonomous social actors towards a democratic society. The elements of emancipatory Environmental Education where identified in this research and, in the educative actions, they where elaborated through interactive methodologies with groups of recyclers. Therefore, we emphasize the advances generated by the capacity building activities, revealed in meetings and through the recyclers voices: change in their self-esteem; the self-value of their own activities, the strengthening of their identities, the assimilation of the processes lived throughout the capacity development and the increased capacity for collective planning of local actions. As a result of the assessment of this research, a need for future work of the leaders themselves to spread the educational actions to a larger contingent of recyclers has become clear, as well as a need to intensify the dialogue with the public authorities and to overcome the institutional hurdles with the purpose of creating inclusive solid waste public policies with organized recyclers.

Repositioning geography in education for sustainability: the South African higher education context

Pretorius, Rudolf Wessel 02 1900 (has links)
The 21st century environmental crisis that humankind faces has resulted in a need to re-orientate ourselves towards environmental sustainability. Singular paradigmatic ways of knowing no longer deal with multiple interconnected realities and associated uncertainty, diversity and risk faced by humankind. Geography focusses on interactions between the ‘human’ and ‘natural’ world, and should play a leading role in Education for Sustainability (EfS). The multidimensional worldview of geographers together with their integrative skills, awareness of scale, place and space and holistic viewpoint positions the discispline in the forefront of sustainability related challenges. The extent of the contribution depends on the view of Geography and how it is transferred to graduates, during their undergraduate studies. In reality non-geographers view the discipline as suitable for EfS, with the Geography fraternity less enthusiastic. This thesis suggests that South African Geography (as is the case internationally) has limited success in making its instrumental value known through EfS. Using the integral perspective of epistemological pluralism, it is suggested that an obstacle is the fragmentation of undergraduate Geography between sub-fields and theoretical and practical/ analytical courses, with limited intra-discipline discourse. The identity of Geography appears to be locked into dualisms of society versus nature and theory versus technique. These dualisms create an obstacle for the reconfiguration in terms of mutual conceptualisation of society-nature interaction in a strong theoretical setting and with techniques in a supporting role. The multi-paradigmatic methodology used in this thesis includes an assessment of undergraduate curricula of 17 Departments of Geography at South African universities, a questionnaire on Geography and EfS sent to departments, focus groups at selected departments and interviews with a selection of South African geographers. Findings indicate that although sustainability features on the undergraduate level in all departments, it is not a cross-cutting theme. It is concluded that closer integration between the sub-fields and identities of Geography, regarding the diversity of Geography as an asset and the acceptance of multiple paradigms, is the only way through which Geography in South Africa will be able to strengthen its position in EfS, while ensuring a vibrant future for the discipline. / Geography / Ph. A multiple case study on crop protection industry and a environmental series company.

Teixeira, Isabela Grespan da Rocha 04 October 2013 (has links)
Educational actions on environmental sustainability are a tool whose aim is to increase the people\'s consciousness about the environment problems and their consequences for mankind. These actions, when well structured and applied, play an important role in changing people\'s habits. In this context, companies can contribute by applying such actions to their employees and other stakeholders. Therefore, the objective of the present work is to identify how crop protection industry and environmental service companies develop their TD&E systems for environmental sustainability. In order to achieve such objectives, a multiple-case study of two companies, one crop protection industry and other providing environmental services, was conducted. With these case studies, it was possible to understand the interaction between human resource department and environmental sustainability actions, including how environmental education (EE) and environmental sustainability education (ESE) are applied to employees at different organizational levels. It was also possible to know how companies perform their training need assessment and how they plan and evaluate educational actions for environmental sustainability. In terms of practical implications, one can state that shorter sessions (up to 2 hours long), combination of teaching techniques, and use of case study as a form of evaluation at the end of the education action contribute to trigger the learners\' interest and fix the content more easily. It is important to offer adequate milieu and tools for conducting education actions for environmental sustainability out of the class room.
