Interactive Notebooks & 5E Learning Cycles Aligned to the New TNSES for Grades 3-5

Robertson, Laura, Lowery, Andrea 11 November 2017 (has links)
Our session will focus on using interactive notebooks and the 5Es to teach elementary science. We will model interactive notebook strucutre, and we have over 15 interactive notebook units to share aligned to the new 3rd-5th Grade TN Science Education Standards. These resources were developed out of a collaboration with classrom teachers, pre-service teachers, and higher education faculty. Special emphasis was placed on potentially difficult to teach standards. Each interactive notebook unit includes lab data sheets, Claim-Evidence-Reasoning student prompts, answer keys, and lines of evidence.

An Analytical Study of Utah Verse to Determine What Utah Poetry Might Be Recommended for Study in Elementary and Secondary Utah Schools

Sorenson, Lawrence James 01 May 1936 (has links)
This study has a primary and a secondary purpose. The primary purpose is to call attention to the question of whether or not Utah verse should be introduced for study into the elementary and secondary schools of Utah. The author does not want to imply that he will give a satisfactory answer to this question. He hopes, however, that this effort will emphasize the question and stimulate thought concerning the same. It seems reasonable to suppose that most of the Utah school officials who are concerned in any way with literary material for school curricula will agree that, if there is any Utah verse that has literary merit, it should be utilized in the Utah schools.

Problems with Science Teaching and Learning for English Language Learners in One Diverse Elementary School

Rodriguez, Karen Margaret 2012 August 1900 (has links)
This qualitative study centered on science instruction and learning that occurred in a Title I elementary school in a suburban district in southeast Texas. Twelve teachers were interviewed in order to understand their perceptions of their classroom practices in terms of science instruction and learning for English Language Learners (ELL). This study also analyzed information gathered from teacher lesson plan and classroom observations. The participants' awareness of the instructional practices necessary for ELL student achievement in science was evident through analysis of interview transcripts. However, after observation of actual classroom instruction, it became apparent that the teaching and learning in most classrooms was not reflective of this awareness. This study proposes that this disconnect may be a result of a lack of quality professional development available to the teachers. The study also outlines and describes the characteristics of quality professional development and its relationship to focused instruction and continuous student improvement.

The role of the school social worker in family involvement as identified by family specialists and parents in selected title 1 schools in north east independent school district in san antonio, texas

Canada, Gloria Lou 15 May 2009 (has links)
This study examined the influence of social workers placed at the elementary school level, who work with low-socioeconomic families. The intent of the study was to examine the role of the social worker, at identified Title I elementary schools, on parent involvement. Research Question 1 asked, “What influence do the family specialists have in family involvement as reported by parents and family specialists at the identified Title I elementary schools in the North East ISD, in San Antonio, Texas?” The results of this study strongly support that the family specialist on the campus did have a positive influence on parents getting involved at their child’s school. Research Question 2 asked, “What selected variables influence parental involvement as reported by parents and family specialists, who are participants of the Parent Academy at the selected Title I elementary schools in the North East ISD, in San Antonio, Texas?” The results of this study strongly supported that the variables of open communication between home and school and the school being inviting to parents are positive factors in getting parents involved. Research Question 3 asked, “What influence do community agencies have in assisting with the needs of families, as reported on the end-of-year summary sheets by the family specialists at the selected Title I elementary schools in the North East ISD, in San Antonio, Texas?” The results of this study showed that data procedures were inconsistent among the family specialists in the North East ISD. Data concerning the use of social service agencies was incomplete. No standard procedures are in place for tracking services provided to families. Research Question 4 asked, “What influence do parents have on determining the classes set forth for the Parent Academy, as reported by the parents and family specialists who are participants of the Parent Academy at the selected Title I elementary campuses in the North East ISD in San Antonio, Texas?” The results of this study strongly suggested that both parents and family specialists feel the parents have a voice in choosing the classes provided for them by the family specialists.
