Ethnic Language and East Asian Endogamy and Exogamy in the United StatesJan, Jie-Sheng 2011 December 1900 (has links)
Previous research on Asian intermarriage has examined the effects of cultural and structural assimilation, such as educational attainment, English ability, and income, on major Asian groups' intermarriage patterns. But it has given little attention to the importance of cultural retention in determining East Asians' intermarriage patterns and sometimes treats distinct East Asian groups as one pan-Asian group. East Asian Americans possess their own distinct languages, customs, and cultures, much different from one another. These unexplored characteristics play a crucial role in the definition of group identity and relationships with other groups. This study draws on selective assimilation perspective and utilizes the Census 2000 5% PUMS files and multinomial logistic regression models to investigate the influence of ethnic language on the probabilities of endogamy and exogamy of East Asians in the U.S. Ethnicity, English ability, gender, age, nativity status, and college education are included.
Findings indicate that ethnic language retention increases endogamy and decreases exogamy for all men of the four East Asian groups, but not intermarriage with other races for Vietnamese men. Ethnic languages also increase the chance of in-group marriage (while decreasing the likelihood of out-group marriage) among Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese women, except on intermarriage with other races for Japanese women. The effects of ethnic language on East Asian marriages are the most prominent among all predictors and are almost comprehensive. All other predictors in the study are no match for ethnic language in influencing marriage patterns of East Asians.

Newar marriage and kinship in Kathmandu, NepalSakya, Anil M. January 2000 (has links)
This thesis presents a descriptive and analytical study of Newar marriage and kinship in Kathmandu. Essentially, this is a study about caste and the role that it plays in Newar life, in particular, the way that caste is expressed through marriage patterns and kinship rituals. This study also shows that although the link between one's caste and one's traditional caste occupation is breaking down, one's caste identity is still maintained through one's choice of marriage partner and one's participation in kinship rituals which occur at the various levels of caste organization. Newar caste organizations are also undergoing a process of transformation. In addition to the traditional caste organizations, there are also new intercaste organizations which cater to the ritual needs of those in intercaste marriages. This recent phenomenon coincides with the professionalization of other caste organizations, which, in addition to performing their ritual duties, have also taken on the role of social and economic guardians to their caste members. It could be argued that although some forms of caste are no longer applicable, in other ways, caste in Newar society has never been stronger or more important. Despite the claim that intercaste marriages are on the rise, the data shows that the majority of Newars still practice caste endogamy. Membership into a caste organization - which is through the initiation ritual - is so important to Newar identity that intercaste couples have started their own caste organization to ensure that their offspring will officially be a part of a caste group. In sum, this study shows that despite the fact that caste is no longer recognized in the Nepalese constitution, caste is still the main vector of Newar identity, and this is seen most clearly through the analysis of Newar marriage and kinship.

Consanguinity, genetics and definitions of kinship in the UK Pakistani PopulationBittles, A.H., Small, Neil A. 28 December 2015 (has links)
Yes / Consanguineous marriage is a controversial topic in many Western societies, with attention mainly focused on the health of immigrant communities from Asia and Africa. In the UK consanguinity is especially prevalent in the Pakistani community which now numbers over 1.1 million. Less attention has been paid to the influence of hereditary population stratification within Pakistani communities. In particular, biraderi (literally brotherhood) membership which denotes male lineages that largely govern marriage partner choice and hence the transmission of disease genes. The various roles played by biraderi and their relationship to other socio-occupational and kinship terms, such as caste, quom and zat, are often overlooked in health-based studies. The interchangeable use of these different kinship terms without rigorous definition can create identity uncertainty and hinders inter-study comparisons. Where feasible, standardization of terminology would be both desirable and beneficial, with biraderi the preferred default term to identify specific social and genetic relationships within the Pakistani diaspora.

Disserta??o (Mestrado) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Zootecnia, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2016. / Brazil is a country that stands out for milk production, ranking fifth in the world, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE, 2015). The Brazilian dairy herd is mostly composed of zebu and mestizo animals (crossbreeding between European and zebu breeds). Among the zebu breeds, the Gir and Guzer? stand out for the production of meat or milk, besides being animals that adapt well the conditions of the climate. For many years the genetic improvement programs of dairy cattle had as main concern the production characteristics. However, the economic success of dairy farming is not only related to the productive efficiency, but also to the reproductive efficiency, health and longevity of the herd. However, gains in productivity led to a reduction in the efficiency of reproductive traits and a decline in longevity. Longevity is a highly desirable characteristic in dairy herds, because of its relation to profitability, since in livestock with longer cows, there is a reduction with the cost of replacement animals. However, longevity is a complex feature influenced by many factors, such as milk production, well-being, endogamy and creation goals. In addition, most longevity measures are obtained late in the life of the cow or even after death. This fact makes the direct selection for longevity impractical due to the time required to obtain the measure, as well as the long generation interval, being a characteristic of low heritability. Therefore, indirect selection for longevity has been used through the selection of other characteristics of economic interest, expressed early, such as age at first calving, and may contribute to obtain genetic gains. Thus, the study of longevity characteristics and other characteristics of economic importance are indispensable for inclusion of longevity in genetic breeding programs for milk production.

Genetic improvement of an allogamous specie such as maize, can be directed essentially towards two alternatives: obtaining improved populations or obtaining an F1 generation with hybrid vigor. In both situations, the experiments were in randomized blocks with three replicates in three and two locations respectively. The flowering characteristics of male and female, plant height, ear height, ear length, ear diameter, resistance to foliar diseases, lodging, breakage, ears bada granades and grain yield. Were estimates parameters heritability in the broad and restricted sense, gain with selection and genotypic and phenotypic correlation between the characters. The populations present good potential of grain yield, value for improvement aiming at the introgression of different sources of germplasm in breeding system and have high genetic value, both for productivity and for other agronomic traits of interest. The progenies of full-sibs with grain yield of 67,4%, 61,7%, 51,3% and 84,65% in relation to the check in two locations respectively, indicate the viability of the introgression of germplasm in the breeding system. The S1 progenies presented sufficient variability to be explored in recurrent selection programs. The results also indicated the existence of progenies with lower inbreeding depression, which can be explored in populations selection programs and and extraction of inbred lines.
