Assessing laboratory report writing skills of first entering bachelor of science students

Veldtman, Helga Delene January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (English Studies)) --University of Limpopo, 2020 / Conventional laboratory report writing skills present an enormous challenge to first entering science students including the Bachelor of Science (BSc) students at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMHSU). First entering students are expected to meet essential tertiary discourse requirements and standards consistent with their scientific community. The purpose of this study was to explore how content lecturers in cognate departments assess laboratory report writing skills of first entering BSc students. The research design was exploratory and a mixed approach was used. Students sat for a criterion-referenced test and interviews were conducted with content lecturers to collect data; quantitative basic statistical interrogation of the basic data points and post interview analysis were performed. Some of the key findings of this exploration was that most first entering BSc students are in a dire situation regarding the laboratory report writing genre; they are unable to communicate comprehensive and intelligible information in the written laboratory reports. Thus, content lecturers and English language lecturers from the Department of Language Proficiency (DLP) need to strategically collaborate in order to improve the performance of first entering BSc students.

Written and oral corrective feedback in the witten work of first-entering students at the university of Limpopo: perceptions of students and lecturers

Ramokgopa, Matome Derick January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (English Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / This study explored the perceptions of students and lecturers with regard to written and oral corrective feedback in a first-level English course at the University of Limpopo. Specifically, the study was designed to establish the views of first entering students and lecturers around oral and written feedback. This study responds to widely-held views that students do not pay much attention to feedback, that even if feedback is provided, some do not know how use feedback systematically to improve their works, and that some lecturers are not investing sufficiently on provision of detailed, usable feedback. This study made use of classroom observations, questionnaires and focus group interviews to establish from students’ perceptions about oral and written corrective feedback in their studies and overall attainment of study goals. Furthermore, lecturers were also invited to participate in interviews to ascertain their perception on whether they consider written feedback essential and how it improves the students’ written English grammar. The study uncovered among others that students view oral and written corrective feedback as a tool that improves their grammar in English challenging long standing views that students are mostly interested in marks obtained in assessments. Data emerging from this study further suggests that participants view oral and written feedback as a device that helps students to improve in their usage of grammar and highlight the need to provide detailed, timely and constructive feedback in student’s academic work.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Mariana Belluzzi Ferreira.pdf: 1785879 bytes, checksum: b3a00cc8c78fa65f05fe5bacc4758e3d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This dissertation’s main objective is to focus on the silencing often perpetuated by the actors of the territorial services network regarding the process of unsheltering as teenagers reach the age of majority. We intend to concentrate, as well, on the discourses that individualize the adolescent's exposure to the repetition of unprotected and violence situations during this process; these situations arise from the lack of a place defined in the social assistance policy to the deinstitutionalization of the adolescent. Conceiving the process of unsheltering when teenagers reach full legal age as a process of deinstitutionalization, we conducted a research-intervention with professionals of the inter-sectorial network of a territory of the city of São Paulo. A group of Conversation in Psychoanalysis has been formed with these professionals. The main objectives of this group was to realized a case study and the construction of working strategies with the subject and their network of relationships. Under contributions from the Psychoanalysis, Institutional Analysis and Social Assistance Policy and from the group’s discussions, we sought to discuss the family and adolescence institutions, central to the process of unsheltering by entering full legal age, as well as their current conceptions in the social service policy. The family was discussed as a social-historical construction, its central place in social service policy, as well as the effects of a familiarization of social assistance policy, particularly in this process of unsheltering, that conceives the family as a natural and exclusive place of care and protection. Such mode of reasoning hinders the construction of other stances of recognition and belonging for the adolescent in the process of becoming a non-citizen due to the end of protection for reaching full legal age. We then sought to discuss the concept of adolescence that prevails in social assistance policy, based on the developmental approach present in the legal speech. Conceived in a universal and a-historical way, this conception comprises the subjective constitution as dissociated from the social bond, making it difficult to recognize the social and political conflicts present in the institutional and social scenes, imputing them to the adolescent through pathological and criminalizing speeches. Trying to deny the naturalization of the notion of adolescence, we present a conception that is articulated with the subject's enrollment in the social bond, conceiving it as a social-political construction. Family, institutional and social speeches offer adolescents a place of recognition and belonging to the social scene. We understand that adolescents, in the process of unsheltering by reaching the age of majority, in the face of the obliteration of family speech and the attribution of a social speech laden with stigmas, are left to their own speech. We also note the absence of an inter-sectoral network as a symptomatic signal of the process of making adolescents unprotected by reaching the age of majority, as well as the possibility of carrying out a social network job. This work allowed the construction of specific intervention devices for this process of unsheltering, and above all it permitted building up a social assistance speech that sought to include them in this policy / A presente pesquisa tem como principal objetivo incidir no silenciamento perpetuado frequentemente pelos atores da rede de serviços territorial no tocante ao processo de desacolhimento institucional por maioridade, bem como nos discursos que individualizam a exposição do adolescente à repetição de situações de desproteção e violência durante este processo; situações estas decorrentes do não-lugar destinado na política de assistência social à desinstitucionalização do adolescente.

The impact of Information literacy training on academic achievement and success of the first year entering undergraduate students at Tshwane University of Technology, Polokwane campus library

Molepo, Manamedi Cynthia January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Information Studies)) --University of Limpopo, 2018 / A large number of first year entering undergraduate students at tertiary institutions at Tshwane University of Technology lack skills and competencies for accessing relevant academic information for their assignments and other academic projects they are engaged in. To overcome this problem academic libraries at this institution organise Information Literacy Training Programme (ILTP) to equip students with such skills and competencies. This research investigated if there is any impact that ILTP has among first year entering undergraduate students attached to the Faculties of Humanities and Management Science, who have attended this programme at Tshwane University of Technology, at Polokwane campus. The study adopted both quantitative and qualitative research approaches through a questionnaire and focus group interview respectively to measure the information literacy skills and competencies of first year entering students before and after t attending ILITP.The study sought to measure (a) Students’ perception of information literacy; (b) Students’ ability to use library resources; (c) Students familiarity with different library resources before and after attendance of the programme. The study found that most of the first entering students had a different perception of information literacy. Furthermore, the student’s abilities to use library resources and their familiarity with library resources were very little before they attended the programme. It was only after they attended the programme that they were familiar with some of the library resources and their abilities to use those resources improved. Therefore this study discovered that ILTP has a positive impact of the academic success and performance of first entering students, even though it is minimal. The study recommends that information literacy education for students should be continuous so that students should not lose focus of what they have learnt in the formal Information Literacy Training Programmes. Furthermore, teaching of information literacy should be compulsory to all first year entering students across all faculties offered at Tshwane University of Technology and this will attach some form of accreditation to them to encourage participation.

SOUTH AFRICA – A SUB-SAHARAN MANUFACTURING PARADISE? : A STUDY ON SWEDISH-RELATED MANUFACTURING COMPANIES

Nordén, Erik, Laine, Markus January 2008 (has links)
BACKGROUND: The general comprehension of the populace is that the continent of Africa is very deprived. However, South Africa, the economic powerhouse in the Southern African region, has a stock exchange that rates amid the twenty largest in the world. With a well-developed infrastructure as well as democratic political system, the area has become increasingly more unwavering for companies disposed to invest. Reasons are cheap labour and availability of natural resources where South Africa has an abundant supply. However, there are also drawbacks to consider before investing in South Africa. Examples can be high criminality, high HIV-prevalence, lack of skilled workers and huge socio-economic disparities. Increased foreign direct investments and developed international trade can be means for South Africa to accelerate growth and employment and thereby contribute to a changed distribution of wealth and income in the country. PURPOSE: The purpose with this thesis is to explore entering strategies of Swedish-related manufacturing companies that have entered South Africa. As a purpose extension our intention also includes exploring the organizational structure used in the subsidiary and whether any cultural circumstances affect the business climate. METHOD: In our thesis the method chosen is a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews of people in, and associated to, Swedish-related manufacturing companies in South Africa. An interpretivistic and abductive perspective is used throughout the completion of the thesis. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that motives for investing in South Africa are merely on behalf of market penetration and utilization of the nation as a springboard towards the Sub-Saharan market. The entering strategy most frequently used is acquisitions and the organizational structure is multinational with an ethnocentric staffing approach. No cultural divergences between Swedes and South Africans interfere in the day-to-day business environment according to our study.

A Study of Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools in Taiwan

Chen, Kuo-Wei 23 January 2003 (has links)
The Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools and the Basic Achievement Tests for Junior High School Students have influenced the right of almost three hundred thousand middle school graduates each year. The schemes have become the most important educational issue so far since they change apace, and bring huge dispute and problems, comparing to the former Senior (Vocational) High School Joint Entrance Exam. The main topic of this study is " The Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools." We mainly use history research method, with the assistance of history review method, to examine the development and history of our multiple schemes for entering secondary high schools domestically. The four purposes of this research are, firstly, to understand the development and history of the multiple schemes for entering secondary schools in our country. Secondly, we analyze a series of practical contents and working conditions in the multiple enrollment programs. Thirdly, we discuss gains and losses of the multiple schemes for entering secondary high schools and its combined programs. Fourthly, we propose improvement suggestions for the multiple schemes of entering secondary high schools. According to the results of the study, we gain the following conclusions: 1.The enrolment system of multiple schemes for entering secondary high schools shows multiple appearances and multiple functions. (1)The Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High School is the most enormous reform of our secondary admission system in these years in Taiwan. (2)The ways of enrolment go toward multiple evaluations and it helps cultivate students' basic abilities, multiple intelligence and promote balance development of five ethics. (3)Taking care of both excellent and average students, it can helps students learn happily, grow healthily and also develop their talents freely. (4)It helps practice the system of separating examination and recruiting students, develop the function of choosing schools and students with autonomy. (5)It strengthens the relationship and helps its educational development between Senior (Vocational) High School and Junior High School. (6)The Basic Achievement Tests, the center of Multiple Enrolments, are the biggest, the most extensively standardized test and including the most students in our educational history. (7)The Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High School have become the new emphasis of living and learning to our middle school education. (8)The tests in each subject in the Basic Achievement Tests are connected to life, and with flexibility and high quality. Thus, it gets many positive notes from junior high school students and teachers. 2.Here come several problems of the multiple schemes for entering secondary high schools. (1)Moving admission systems doesn't take ethics of policy into consideration. (2)The policy of Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools has become a super "Research of Action " educational reform. (3)The Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools depart from the spirit of multiple evaluations. (4)The education reform of admission system should not stop at the point of its technical amendment. (5)The Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools becomes another kind of Joint Entrance Examination; the value of having superstition on star schools is still the difficulty of practicing the Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools. (6)9-year Joint Curricula Plan for Elementary and Junior High Schools that belongs to curriculum reform is behind, but the reform of Enrolment system, which belongs to curriculum evaluation, is ahead. The reforming procedure is upside-down, increasing the difficulty of moving the Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High Schools. (7)We short of educational funds in middle schools, so it is hard to achieve balance and build school features between the country school and city school. That will also be harmful to the competitive abilities of our middle schools. (8)Using the grades of Basic Achievement Tests as the only criteria for entering senior and vocational high schools is misused. We offer the following suggestions toward the problems of findings in this research paper: (1)The construction and amendment of the Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High School should return to the thinking direction of educational essence and standpoint and should never go back to the old way of Joint Entrance Examination. (2)The Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High School are the main criteria of education reform. Thus, the ministry of education should be careful, clear and stable to the policy planning. (3)Make the Basic Achievement Tests as a reference criteria of admission ways for entering secondary high schools, bur not the only criteria. (4)Simplify and synthesize the two admission ways of "Application for Admission" and "Selection for Admission," and have the "Application for Admission" become the main stream in our admission system. (5)We should continually discuss to synthesize and simplify the pattern of recruiting students, "The Multiple Schemes for Entering Senior and Vocational High School" and "The Multiple Schemes for Entering Junior College." (6)The ministry of education should establish the specialized test-making institute and the center of registered distribution as soon as possible. (7)The ministry of education should plan to balance the educational level of secondary school in each area and make secondary high school education exquisite. (8)We suggest to continually strengthen the constructions of test questions in the Basic Achievement Tests and the work of deepening and extending test questions, in order to elevate qualities of test questions. (9)It should be an inevitable trend to take academic performance at junior high school into consideration gradually in the Multiple Schemes for Entering Secondary High School after full preparations. (10)We should aggressively discuss to synthesize the three big recent schemes of educational reform," The Multiple Schemes for Entering Senior and Vocational High Schools", "The Schemes for Joining Senior and Vocational High Schools in each community" and "9-year Joint Curricula Plan for Elementary and Junior High Schools." Also, we should move 12-year compulsory education actively in order to construct excellent environment of secondary education and develop great multiple schemes for entering secondary high schools.

Prostitution : En litteraturstudie om kvinnors egna berättelser gällande processen in och ut ur prostitution. / : Prostitution- A literature study of women’s own stories regarding the process in and out of prostitution.

Hjort, Caroline, Lindblad Wojcik, Malin January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study was to learn more about women in prostitution, mainly about the process in and out of prostitution. Four books containing biographical material were read, three were written by the authors themselves and the fourth by two authors who interviewed female prostitutes. The empirical study was analyzed with thematic analysis and gender and stigma was used as theoretical perspectives and interpretation frames. The results showed that factors such as economics, traumatic events and self-hatred were the main reasons for entering prostitution, and that exiting prostitution was dependent on factors such as time, relationships and the treatment of society. The conclusion is that it is not a particular personality type that enters prostitution but it being due to several collaborative circumstances, therefore preventive efforts are important. It is also easier to quit with the help of someone, such as professional helpers.
