Paper machine white water treatment in channel flow:integration of passive deaeration and selective flotationHaapala, A. (Antti) 30 November 2010 (has links)
Abstract
Gas removal from the papermaking process is currently a standard practice, whereas purification of the internal water circulation has become common only recently. Both unit processes have progressed greatly during recent decades and new concepts are constantly being developed. The aim of this thesis was to analyse the efficiency and applicability of a channel flow design introduced by Metso for passive white water deaeration and to study the dynamics of passive bubbly gas removal. In addition, separation of the detrimental process water components by selective flotation during deaeration was studied to add further functionality to the channel flow design.
Turbulent mixing at the flow discharge and the consequent air entrainment were seen to limit the gas separation efficiency. Also, the properties of different white waters notably affect their deaeration through viscous forces, the concentration of surface active components and bubble-particle interactions. Thus similar levels of gas separation cannot be achieved with all process waters. The analysis showed that the drag of small microbubbles is mostly caused by hydrophobic contamination and the dispersed particles that readily attach to the bubbles. Correlations were derived based on experimental data to provide new information on the drag force experienced by small bubbles in white waters.
Chemically unaided flotation of white water in the channel flow was shown to be efficient in separating hydrophobic contaminants that have adverse effects on paper machine production and product quality. Both good reductions in contaminant content and high selectivity in their removal were achieved. Channel flow with an overflow can be considered well suited for the first stage of froth separation, while further treatment of the channel flow reject may consist of a secondary flotation or other process that enables the recirculation of fines and fillers. Although a certain level of losses of fines and fillers must be expected, substantial fraction of these solid components can be returned to the process stream.
The proposed multifunctional process, channel flow deaeration and frothing of white water, was seen to be straightforward, economical and feasible while also providing benefits in terms of total process efficiency that are not delivered by any current process scheme. The experimental parameters presented here regarding bubble dynamics and flotation efficiency can be used to achieve better models of these processes.

Pós-efeitos da sincronização em campo e a fase de atividade do roedor subterrâneo tuco-tuco (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae) / Aftereffects of field entrainment and the activity phase of the subterranean rodent tuco-tuco (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae)Tomotani, Barbara Mizumo 09 December 2011 (has links)
To verify whether these subterranean and nocturnal animals ever expose themselves to light in the field, individual animals were continuously observed during light hours in a semi-natural enclosure that was constructed in their natural habitat. Observations during different seasons revealed that tuco-tucos not only emerged aboveground during daylight hours but also that their light exposure was due to robust diurnal activities of foraging and soil removal. Because of the lack of access to these animals´ subterranean and nocturnal activities in the field, the aftereffects of field entrainment were examined instead to verify the contribution of the previously observed diurnal behaviors to the total daily activity. This examination was achieved by transferring the observed animals from a field enclosure to constant laboratory conditions. Surprisingly, tuco-tucos exhibited robust activity concentrated in the phase corresponding to the external night without any trace of transients or of the diurnal activity that was observed in the enclosure. This pattern was also replicated when the aftereffects of the field entrainment of other animals trapped directly from the field were measured in the laboratory. Furthermore, no difference was detected in the activity measured with and without access to a running wheel. Our study of a wild subterranean species in its natural habitat can contribute novel ecological elements to the recently debated issue of the meaning of day-activity displayed by nocturnal rodents in the field

Synchronizace cirkadiánního systému během prenatálního a časného postnatálního vývoje / Synchronization of circadian system during prenatal and early postnatal developmentHoudek, Pavel January 2010 (has links)
One of the few attributes common to almost all living organisms is an ability to generate and maintain endogenous rhythms, which are controlled by a biological clock. The processes, which recur with a period of about 24 hours, are known as the circadian rhythms. The circadian clock controls rhythms of molecular, physiological as well as behavioral processes and adapts their activity to regularly appearing changes in day and night or season. In case of mammals, central oscillator is located in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). The SCN clock entrains rhythms of peripheral oscillators located in cells of other tissues. The central oscillator itself is synchronized with external environment mainly by a light-dark cycle, however, other cues can entrain the SCN clock as well. For example, during prenatal development, entrainment of a fetal clock is entirely dependent on non-photic cues derived from maternal organism. This study aimed to investigate a mechanism of the communication between the maternal and fetal central oscillators. A hypothesis was tested whether maternal melatonin may play a role in entrainment of the circadian clock in the fetal SCN. Furthermore, a mechanism, how melatonin may entrain the fetal clock was investigated at molecular level. The results provided evidence, that...

TOPFLOW-Experiments on Direct Condensation and Bubble EntrainmentSeidel, Tobias, Lucas, Dirk, Beyer, Matthias January 2016 (has links)
Direct Contact Condensation between steam and water as well as bubble entrainment below the water surface play an important role in different accident scenarios for light water reactors. One example is the emergency core cooling water injection into a two-phase mixture. It has to be considered for example to evaluate potential pressurized thermal shock phenomena.
This report documents experiments conducted in flat basin inside the TOPFLOW pressure chamber aiming on the generation of a database useful for CFD model development and validation. It comprises 3 different setups: condensation at a stratified flow of sub-cooled water, condensation at a sub-cooled water jet and a combination of both phenomena with steam bubble entrainment. The documentation includes all details on the experimental set up, on experimental conditions (experimental matrices), on the conduction of the experiments, on measuring techniques used and on data evaluation procedures. In addition, selected results are presented.

A study of relativistic fluids with applications to cosmology: A variational approachOreta, Timothy 14 March 2022 (has links)
This thesis examines relativistic fluids. We have used the variational approach to develop tools for studying the dynamics of relativistic fluids to apply this to cosmological modelling. Studies like these go beyond the standard model in cosmology. Researchers believe that such extensions to the standard cosmological model are pivotal to resolving some of the long-standing cosmological problems. An example of such problems is the origin, growth (from quantum electromagnetic fluctuations to large-scale magnetic fields during inflation) and evolution of cosmological magnetic fields that exhibit as large-scale (cosmological) magnetic fields in late time. One other example is the coincidence problem. The standard approach in such studies is to use modelling in the form of the single-fluid formalism. As an alternative one can consider the single-fluid and multi-fluid formalisms that incorporate aspects of electrodynamics and thermodynamics, respectively in the context of the variational approach. This might help us make progress in trying to either resolve some of these problems or at least open up new ways of addressing them. In this regard, we have extended the well-known M¨ueller-Israel-Stewart (hereafter MIS) formalism to allow us to examine the effect on fluid flow in which the components of the multi-species fluids interact thermodynamically. We use the extension to the MIS theory in the context of interacting species to study the growth of dark matter and dark energy, and find that either interaction or entrainment involving dark energy and dark matter suggests a mutual relative modulation of the growth behaviour of the two densities. This may aid in resolving the coincidence problem. Our examination of inflation-generated, large-scale magnetic fields reveals a super-adiabatically evolving mode from the beginning of the radiation-dominated epoch to either much later during the epoch or probably extending far into the era of matter domination which may account for late time, large-scale magnetic fields.

CFD MODELLING OF TWO-PHASE FLOWS AT SPILLWAY AERATORSTeng, Penghua January 2017 (has links)
Due to the high-speed flow in a chute spillway, cavitation damages often occur. This undesired phenomenon threatens the safety of the structure. For the purpose of eliminating the damages, an aerator is often installed in the spillway. To understand its characteristics, physical model tests are a popular method. To complement the model tests, computation fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used to study aerator flows. To represent the two-phase flows, multiphase models should be employed. This thesis examines two of them, namely, the Volume-Of-Fluid model (VOF) and Two-Fluid model. Based on the background of the Bergeforsen dam, the aerator flow is modelled by means of the VOF model. The simulated spillway discharge capacity is in accordance with the experimental data. Compared with the results, empirical formulas fail to evaluate the air supply capacity of aerator as it is wider than the conventional width. A hypothetical vent modification is proposed. For the original and proposed layouts, the study illustrates the difference in the air-flow conditions. The results show that a larger vent area is, for a large-width aerator, preferable in the middle of the chute. To study the flip bucket-shaped aerators in the Gallejaur dam, physical model tests and prototype observations are conducted. The results lead to contradicting conclusions in terms of jet breakup and air entrainment. A CFD model is, as an option, employed to explain the reason of the discrepancy. The numerical results coincide with the prototype observations. The jet breakup and air entrainment are evaluated from air cavity profiles; the air-pressure drops are small in the cavity. The discrepancy is due to overestimation of the surface-tension effect in the physical model tests. Based on the experimental data of an aerator rig at the Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW), ETH Zurich, the Two-Fluid model is used to predict air concentration distributions in the aerated flow. The model includes relevant forces governing the motion of bubbles and considers the effects of air bubble size. The numerical results are conformable to the experiments in the air cavity zone. Downstream of the cavity, the air concentration near the chute bottom is higher, which is presumably caused by the fact that the interfacial forces in the Two-Fluid model are underestimated. / <p>QC 20170224</p>

Vývoj cirkadiánního systému potkana v podmínkách stálého světla / Development of the rat circadian system under constant light conditionsPetrželková, Lucie January 2021 (has links)
The circadian system is a mechanism designed to generate circadian time and to synchronize it with the solar cycle. Its function is to adjust to behavioral and physiological function with the 24-hour period. The adjustment is performed using a so-called zeitgeber or synchronizer. The main circadian clock is in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) in the hypothalamus. Prolonged exposure of the organism to constant light conditions results in desynchronization of the circadian clock, which can lead to many pathologies. The impact of light at night on the organism has been studied for a long time, but the question of the impact of constant light on the development of the circadian system of the organism has been less studied. My thesis deals with this issue. Using RT-qPCR I investigated how the rhytm changes in the expression of selected clock genes in selected parts of the rat's brain, which has been kept in constant light sice birth. I also tested the impact of exposure to constant light on the early development of rhytm in locomotor activity later in the rat's life. Keywords: circadian system, photic entrainment, desynchronization under constant light, development, rat

Model Studies of Slag Metal Entrainment in Gas Stirred LadlesSenguttuvan, Anand January 2016 (has links)
In gas stirred steelmaking ladles, entrainment of slag into metal and vice versa takes place. The slag entrainment has been shown to abruptly increase the mass transfer rates of refining reactions through high temperature and water modeling studies of the past. However such an effect has not been correlated with the degree of entrainment, since the latter has not been quantified in terms of operating parameters like gas injection rate and fluid properties. Much of the past works are limited to finding the critical conditions for onset of entrainment. The difficulty lies in measuring the degree of entrainment in industrial ladles or even in a water model. Mathematical modeling is also challenging due to the complexity of the multiphase phenomena. So in this thesis, a modular mathematical modeling approach is presented wherein the phenomena of slag entrainment into metal is resolved into four aspects, models developed for each and finally integrated to study its role.
The individual models are (1) multiphase large eddy simulations to simulate slag entrainment in a narrow domain that receives its boundary conditions from (2) single phase RANS simulation of a full ladle, (3) a Lagrangian particle tracking method to compute the residence times of slag droplets in metal phase and (4) a kinetic model that integrates the above three models to compute mass transfer rate as a function of degree of entrainment.
Mass transfer rate predictions comparable to a literature correlation were obtained. This supports the modeling approach and also the assessment of role of various system parameters on entrainment characteristics. In essence, the present work shows a systematic approach to model and study the complex multiphase phenomena. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / The entrainment of liquid slag into liquid steel in gas stirred-steelmaking ladles is known to increase the rate of refining drastically. However, there is lack of correlation between degree of entrainment and ladle operating conditions, which this thesis addresses through mathematical modeling.
