Recent data estimate that the area covered with forest of Mata Atlantica represents between 11.6% and 16% of its original length, resulting in the extinction of species due to habitat reduction and isolation and edge effect. Among animals, insects are noted for presenting the largest number of species and participate in a large number of interactions with other organisms. Being good bioindicators in studies of environmental impact assessment, including the effects of forest fragmentation. Ant communities (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) have been used as bioindicators because of their high species richness and respond to environmental changes. The main objective was to study the effects of forest fragmentation on the richness, diversity and community composition of ants foraging on plants. Moreover, there was the spatial and temporal variations of this community and the influence of vegetation structure and in the richness and diversity of arboreal ant fauna. The study was conducted during the dry season of 2009 and the rainy season of 2010. We sampled eight forest fragments in the City of Vassouras, besides Tingu? Biological Reserve, State of Rio de Janeiro. In a plot of 120 m2, 20 trees with CAP between 15 to 40 cm were marked, these being distant about 10 m apart. The same amount of sardines in edible oil, was placed in the trunk of each tree and on white paper, 10 cm x 12 cm, distributed over 20 bushes near their trees, the approximate height of 1 m. The baits were placed in the schedule between 10:30 and 11:00, one hour remaining on the vegetation. To sample the vegetation structure, we used the method of touch. All trees with CAP over 5 cm were counted and morphospecies and were also obtained the percentage of canopy cover. In order to study the influence of abiotic factors were recorded temperature and relative humidity. We collected a total of 73 morphospecies of ants distributed in 20 genera and six subfamilies, Myrmicinae (33), Dolichoderinae (15), Formicinae (12), Pseudomyrmecinae (7), Ponerinae (3), Ectatomminae (2) and Ecitoninae (1). Pheidole was the largest genus with species richness (13), followed by Linepithema (9) Solenopsis (8), Pseudomyrmex (7) and Brachymyrmex (6). Overall, the diversity index and species richness of ants were higher in the rainy season than in dry season. We found 12 unique species in the dry season and 32 in the rainy season. The variation of fragment size did not influence the species richness of ants on a local scale. The multiple regression analysis step by step to the data of vegetation structure of the fragments revealed that the richness and diversity (H') of ant species depended mainly on the density of shrubs and trees away all the vegetation structure has influenced ant community. This shows that for the arboreal ant community, the habitat quality is more important than the size of the area, stressing the importance of conservation of the Atlantic.

We tested the hypothesis that different component orientations may influence the structure and floristic changes. In a sample area of 9.700 m2, divided into ten areas, were surveyed 1508 individuals, distributed in 324 species, 154 genera and 52 families. The families richest in species were: Myrtaceae, Lauraceae, Fabaceae, Rubiaceae and Euphorbiaceae. The Diversity Index Shannon-Wiener (H ') was 5.093 nats / indiv., And the evenness (J) was 0.881. Horizontal structure in the species Joannesia princeps, Piptadenia gonoacantha e Pseudopiptadenia contorta, Meternichia princeps, Apuleia leiocarpa, Astrocaryum aculeatissimum, Chrysophyllum flexuosum reached the highest value of phytosociological importance. A phytosociological analysis of each individual area indicated significant floristic and structural variations, with a trend toward greater diversity is found in areas of higher altitude and farther from the urban perimeter. Of the 324 species found in the study, 124 were found exclusively on the north side, 100 on the southern slope and 100 occurred in both strands. The exclusive species and more frequent on the north side were Brosimum guianense e Annona cacans, Zollernia ilicifolia, Couratari pyramidata, Lecythis pisonis e Gallesia integrifolia. On the southern slope, the exclusive species that stood out were Cariniana estrellensis, Cabralea canjerana, Eugenia microcarpa. Cluster analysis among the ten areas indicated, in general, greater similarity due to the proximity between areas than for the orientation of the slope, however comparing the north and south closer together, it is observed that the highest diversity indices, most proportion of rare species and unique and the most advanced stages of succession were found on the southern slope. The cases where this did not happen were observed in areas closer to the urban boundaries that regardless of the slope were less floristic diversity. The diameter distribution model presented inverted J, with a diameter range quite variable between areas. No pattern was found between the diameter distribution and orientation of the slope. Comparing the flora of Pedra Branca with other forest areas in Rio de Janeiro, there was generally a low floristic similarity. The major floristic identity occurred with the work in-house Pedra Branca, Serra da Tiririca, and Tijuca Forest. Works out of the city showed floristic similarity below 25%. The high diversity of the studied area is a reflection of its high environmental heterogeneity, related to differences in altitude, slope orientation, successional stage and history of use, which puts the Pedra Branca as a strategic area for species conservation in Rio de Janeiro. Trabalhos fora do munic?pio apresentaram similaridade flor?stica inferior a 25%.

The habitat can influence community structure in multiple ways and elucidate these relationships has provoked a lot of debate in ecology. The habitat heterogeneity hypothesis states that an increase in habitat heterogeneity (number of habitats) leads to an increase in species diversity in the landscape due to an expansion in niche dimensions. This study aims to identify whether this hypothesis is valid for the spiders that inhabit a locality in the Caatinga of northeastern Brazil. Cursorial and arboreal spiders were sampled in 30 plots within an area of Caatinga together with measures of environmental complexity, habitat heterogeneity and environmental parameters related to multiple aspects of vegetation architecture and species composition of woody plants. Stepwise multiple regressions were used to define which local environmental parameters best explain the variation in arboreal and cursorial spiders richness. Then a NMDS (Nonmetric multidimensional scaling) was used to reduce the number of predictive variables to those who are the most important and best represent the variation in spiders richness associated with the environment they were sampled. The results show a clear segregation between the guilds of arboreal and cursorial spiders, both related to what kind of environmental variables best explain its variation as well as in relation to what part of the vegetation they occupy / A complexidade inerente as comunidades naturais desafia nosso entendimento sobre como o habitat influencia a abund?ncia, a distribui??o local e a diversidade das esp?cies.
