Swanepoel, Thalyta January 2005 (has links)
The media has an important role to play in providing information to form the perceptions of media users on HIV/Aids. Furthermore, the media has an agenda setting function through which it determines what news consumers think about, and how they think about these topics they are presented with. Extensive media coverage has been given to the subject of HIV/Aids since the start of the pandemic. The nature of the coverage has, however, been widely criticised, mainly by interest groups actively involved in the fight against the disease. Few formal guidelines exist to guide journalists in this field. Moreover, the existing guidelines that originated mainly from the gaps interest groups identified in the coverage on HIV/Aids, are fairly fragmented. Many newspapers follow the general guidelines set by the media industry for ethical news reporting. These guidelines, such as the ethical code of the Press Ombudsman, are a result of self regulation, which is intrinsic to the social responsibility model that is seen as ideal for South Africa. There are several existing codes offering guidance regarding professional standards and general conduct. Only one - that of the now inactive South African Union of Journalists - includes criteria on HIV/Aids reporting. Through formulating guidelines, interest groups have an agenda setting function and a subsequent potential influence on the media and the public agenda. This paper endeavours to analyse and systematically summarise criteria set by the interest groups for ethically acceptable and accountable HIV/Aids reporting against the background of the agenda setting theory and the social responsibility model. In addition, HIV/Aids reporting in three Sunday papers (the Sunday Times, Sunday Sun and Rapport) is verified against these interest group criteria to ascertain how it measures up, and to determine whether a separate interest group code of ethics is desirable. It was found that the Sunday Times views HIV/Aids as a news priority, while the topic does not feature very high on the agenda of the other two papers. The analysis of news items created the impression that journalists have a basic knowledge of HIV/Aids. However, there is little evidence of deeper insight into the potential impact the media could have on the public's perception of the epidemic. Existing ethics codes compare well to interest group guidelines where general professional standards and ethical aspects are concerned. The interest group guidelines, however, focus on specific problems associated with the epidemic, such as stigma and a tendency to focus on the negative. It is within this applied context that such criteria could be useful. / Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Social student's thoughts about ethical codes

Andersson, Johanna January 2009 (has links)
<p> </p><p>The aim of this essay is to gain knowledge of how individual social students believe that ethical codes should be used in social work, and what the individual social students believe that an ethical code should contain. In this essay I have chosen to work on a qualitative approach because I am looking for subjective experiences. I have chosen to use my focused interviews as data collection method. Interviews are a good choice to find out people's experiences of a phenomenon. The result shows that some of the students felt that ethical codes should be used as support for ethical decisions in their daily work. The other students felt that ethical codes should be used in various forms of mentoring groups, which reflected on ethical dilemmas. Finally, I had a question about what the social students felt that the ethics code should contain. The answer to this question was a rather belated response: the rights of clients, responsibilities for social workers, emphasis on what is important in social work, and what characteristics you should have as a social worker.</p>

Haglund, Joel, Holgersson, Sanne January 2015 (has links)
Aim: The purpose of the study is to investigate whether the demographic factors of gender, age and work experience affect the ethical values. The study will also examine the ethical codes within companies influence the ethical values of given situations among vendors in service. Clarification: With the given situations meant the situations described in the survey (Annex 2). Method: In the study a quantitative method was used in which a survey with closed response options was sent out to 863 respondents. In the survey both nominal- and ordinal scales was used to allow correlation, factor, cluster analysis and t-tests with the IBM SPSS computer software. The analyzes were then used to answer the research questions that deduced through the theory. Result: The results showed that age only has a weak connection with a real estate broker's ethical values and is thus not a decisive factor in this case. The second demographic factor sex was found to have no connection at all with a real estate broker's ethical values. In a further analysis using the t-test where an analysis of both sexes was made, it was found that there was no difference between men and women and ethical values. The results also showed that work experience has no significant relationship with a real estate broker's ethical values. Contribution: The purpose of the study is to investigate whether gender, age, work experience and ethical codes affect the ethical values of given situations among vendors in service. Our hope is that the study should be able to contribute with additional information about what it is that can affect a real estate broker's ethical values. Proposal for further studies: Our hope is that further research to develop the results that the study contributed. Proposal for further studies is to investigate other demographic factors that may affect the ethical values and if the leader of the company is a possible influencing factor, but also if a survey for Sweden’s all real estate broker´s would make the outcome different. Keywords: Real estate broker´s, ethical climate, ethical codes, marketing, gender, age, work experience.

Etické problémy na odděleních psychiatrické nemocnice / Ethics at the wards of psychiatric hospital

HOUŠKA, Jindřich January 2017 (has links)
Thesis deals with the ethical problems at the wards of psychiatric hospital. The environment of a psychiatric hospital in the context of its target group psychiatric patients is a source of ethically important situations, which must be solved by the medical social worker. This puts high demands on the worker as he is the/an executive tool of medical social work. The goal of the thesis is to identify ethically important situations, to suggest their solution and eventually to reflect these solutions with the ethical theories, ethical codes, inner rules of the psychiatric hospital and other statutory norms. The structure of the thesis is adjusted to this goal: first, I define the environment of the hospital, describe the target group and medical social worker profession. Secondly, I describe ethical problems identified before, suggest their solutions and reflect them. Finally, in the last part of the thesis, in the discussion, I contemplate about preliminary ethical understanding as a basis for identification of the ethical problems and I ponder other factors that matters in reaching the remedies of ethical problems.

Ekdahl, Pauline, Magnusson, Charlotte January 2018 (has links)
Historically, a number of scandals have been noted where auditors have been dependent on their clients. Although external actions such as legislation and regulation have evolved over time, the recurring problem of independence indicates that further actions may be needed. We have therefore chosen to look at the problem by focusing on the internal actions of the audit firms. The purpose of the study is, therefore, to understand how leading audit firms work with ethical codes as a control tool to ensure the auditor independence. To be able to understand the work, we look at how ethical codes are implemented in organizations and how they are used in the daily work.   Based on a management control perspective, a qualitative case study has been executed. Semi-structured interviews have been used as a method to collect data. In total, six employees from two of the leading audit firms have been interviewed. With an abductive approach, the theoretical framework has been underlying, while the analysis still allowed new angles.   The conclusions of this study are that audit firms incorporate the external rules into their internal codes of ethics and that the codes are implemented in organizations through the management control systems culture, action and personnel control. The ethical codes are implemented in the daily work and become a part of the organizational culture, integrated into systems and processes and guide the recruitment process. Audit firms thereby ensure the auditor independence by using ethical codes as a part of the control systems.
