Mobile presentations with interactive chat for m-Learning

Using presentations in an m-Learning environment enables delivery of rich content to a mobile phone learner. This study investigated how to prepare and stream presentations from a desktop computer to a mobile phone in near-realtime. It also addressed communication between users using interactive text chat in the same environment. Our analysis of text/podcast-based m-Learning applications revealed limited interactivity and lack of diversity in content streamed. To address this, we developed a mobile-based application that uses a task-timer model to synchronize with a server every n units of time to enable near-realtime streaming of presentation slides between mobile and desktop users. The application included text-based instant messenger. Laboratory experiments investigated the use OpenOffice and PowerPoint presentations and techniques used to convert these presentations into mobile phone compatible formats. Experiments were carried out with smart mobile phones running on a third generation cellular network. We employed transaction-logging techniques in addition to automated image analysis techniques to observe and record data. Analysis of the results revealed using presentations enabled more rich content than text-based models such as short message service-based frameworks and podcasts. Although m-Learning is not yet widely adopted, applications such as the one developed in the study offer high hopes for m-Learning because of the use of rich content and interactivity between users.

A Mobile Deaf-to-hearing communication aid for medical diagnosis

Deaf people with a capital `D' are different from deaf or hard of hearing as they primarily use sign language to communicate. This study explores how to design and evaluate a prototype that will allow a Deaf person using SASL to tell a hearing doctor how s/he is feeling and provide a way for the doctor to respond. A computer{based prototype was designed and evaluated with the Deaf people in a previous study. Results from the user trial of the computer{based mock{up indicated that Deaf users would like to see the prototype on a cell phone. Those user trial results, combined with our own user survey results conducted with Deaf people, are used as requirements. We built a prototype for a mobile phone browser by embedding SASL videos inside XHTML pages using Adobe Flash. The prototype asks medical questions using SASL videos. These questions are arranged in an organized way that helps in identifying a medical problem. The answers to the questions are then displayed in English and shown to the doctor on the phone. A content authoring tool was also designed and implemented. The content authoring tool is used for populating the prototype in a context free manner allowing for plug and play scenarios such as a doctor's office, Department of Home A airs or police station. A focus group consisting of Deaf people was conducted to help in the design and pilot trial of the system. A final user trial was conducted with more than thirty Deaf people and the results are presented and analyzed. Data is collected with questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and video recordings. The results indicate that most of the Deaf people found the system easy to learn, easy to navigate through, did not get lost and understood the sign language in the videos on the mobile phone. The hand gestures and facial expressions on the sign language videos were clear. Most of them indicated they would like to use the system for free, and that the system did not ask too many questions. Most of them were happy with the quality of the sign language videos on the mobile phone and would consider using the system in real life. Finally they felt their private information was safe while using the system. O uso da XML (Extensible Markup Language) em aplicações envolvendo bancos de dados vem se consolidando nos últimos dois anos. Os principais sistemas de gerenciamento de banco de dados já incorporam essa tecnologia em suas mais recentes versões. Dentre diversas aplicações destaca-se a publicação de dados relacionais em visões XML. Diferentemente da XML, o Modelo Temporal de Versões (TVM) não apresenta suporte entre os bancos de dados atuais. Esse modelo, que une características temporais com o conceito de versão para projetar aplicações orientadas a objetos, precisa ser mapeado para ser adequadamente controlado em um SGBD (Sistema de Gerenciamento de Banco de Dados). Cumprida essa etapa, aplicações do TVM também podem gerar visões XML. Nesse trabalho é inicialmente apresentada uma forma de representar instâncias de aplicações do TVM em um formato XML. Os documentos definidos a partir desse formato de representação são utilizados como base para consultas. Em seguida, é proposta uma extensão de uma linguagem de consulta XML visando proporcionar recursos para a recuperação de informações temporais e de versão representadas em documentos XML. São definidas funções temporais e versionadas que são incorporadas à linguagem base. O funcionamento das funções e a especificação de consultas temporais versionadas são descritos em detalhes no decorrer do trabalho. Uma ferramenta que implementa a linguagem base é utilizada na realização de testes visando validar as novas funções. / The use of the XML in applications involving databases has grown in the last two years. Recent versions of the main database management systems already incorporate this technology. Publishing relational data in XML can be identified as one of the different applications of XML. The Temporal Version Model (TVM) has no support in current databases. This model matches temporal features with the version concept to project object-oriented applications and needs to be mapped to be managed in a DBMS (Database Management System). Once this mapping is achieved, TVM applications can also generate XML views. This work presents initially a way to represent TVM instances in a XML format. Thus, documents created following this representation may be used in queries. Afterwards, an extension of a XML query language is proposed, aiming to provide features for the retrieval of temporal and version information represented in XML documents. Temporal and version functions are defined and incorporated in a base language. The way functions are executed and the specification of temporal version queries are described in details. A tool that implements the base language is used to test the new functions, with the aim of validation.

Na primeira etapa do trabalho, foram desenvolvidos documentos XML para representar os sistemas de agricultura química da Flórida e do Brasil. Um arquivo XSLT foi criado para processar e calcular o fluxo de emergia para cada recurso e visualizar os resultados utilizando o navegador Internet Explorer. As informações registradas nos arquivos XML são: tipo de recurso (contribuição da natureza e da economia humana), quantidade utilizada, unidade de medida, fator de conversão de unidades e transformidades solares. A análise emergética dos sistemas agrícolas pode ser feita de maneira fácil, através da modificação dos campos ¿quantidade de recursos utilizados¿ nos arquivos XML. Na segunda etapa um aplicativo java foi desenvolvido para abrir os arquivos XML e modificar esses campos. Na terceira etapa foram desenvolvidas páginas web dinâmicas utilizando-se as tecnologias JSP e Struts. Com esta ferramenta o usuário pode escolher o sistema, alterar os valores dos recursos utilizados, gravar esses dados no banco de dados e visualizar os resultados. As principais conclusões deste trabalho são: (a) a utilização da tecnologia XML e Java facilita a análise emergética dos sistemas agrícolas; (b) disponibilizando estas ferramentas na internet, o diagnóstico emergético pode ser difundido e amplamente utilizado, sem perder seus padrões de qualidade; (c) esta metodologia pode ser adaptada para representar todos os sistemas agrícolas brasileiros, incluindo os modelos ecológicos como também os químicos / Abstract: This work had the goal of developing computational tools to make the emergy evaluation of agricultural systems using the technologies XML, XSLT, Java, JSP, Struts and the MySQL database. At the first stage of this work, XML documents were developed to represent the chemical agricultural systems of Florida and Brazil. A XSLT archive was created to process and to calculate the emergy flows for each resource and to visualize the results using the Internet Explorer Navigator. The information stored on the XML archives are: type of resources (contribution of nature and economy), amount used, units of measure, units conversion factors and solar transformities. The emergy analysis of agricultural systems can be done in an easy way, through the modification of the ¿quantity of resources used¿ fields on the XML archives. At the second stage, a java application was developed to open the XML archives and to modify these fields. At the third stage dynamic web pages were developed using the technologies JSP and Struts. With this tool the user can choose the system, modify the values of used resources, save these data on the database and visualize the results. Este trabalho é dedicado ao estudo do comportamento a longo prazo de uma equação de placas extensíveis acoplada a uma equação de calor do tipo hiperbólico. O problema corresponde a um modelo de termo-elasticidade baseado em teorias de calor do tipo não-Fourier. Considerando que efeitos de inércia de rotação estão presentes no modelo, mostramos que o efeito dissipativo do calor e suficiente para estabilizar exponencialmente o sistema, sem dissipações adicionais. Além disso, provamos que o sistema possui um atrator global de dimensão fractal finita e também atratores exponenciais. Nossos resultados generalizam e complementam diversos trabalhos existentes / This work is concerned with long-time dynamics of solutions of extensible plate equations with thermal memory. It corresponds to a model of thermoelasticity based on a theory of non-Fourier heat flux. By considering the case where rotational inertia is present we show that the thermal dissipation is sufficient to stabilize the system exponentially and guarantee the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor. In addition the existence of an exponential attractor and some further properties are also considered. Our results complements several existing results

The mission was to create a prototype of a menu system for the company System Andersson AB. The instructions were that it has to be as interesting and modern now as in 20 years. We had to look at technology from the cutting edge of development to make our prototype survive in the future. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) was the technique we focused on. There are only a few applications that take advantage of WPF today, but it is predicted that WPF will be the next generation method for developing applications to the Windows platform. To make our menu visually appealing, easy to use and at the same time functional, we followed the clear path and guidelines that are available in interaction design. Those guidelines tell us how the design process should be executed. Through usage of the six basic ideas of interaction design and taken the principles of richer user experience further, we were able to build a menu system that will be as modern in 20 years as it is now. We took the thoughts of physical design into account to make the menu understandable and easy to use. / Examensarbetets uppdrag var att skapa en prototyp av ett menysystem åt System Andersson AB, som enligt instruktioner ska vara intressant och modernt, även om 20 år. För att lyckas med detta tittade vi på "cutting edge" av vad som används idag för att inte systemet skulle riskera att bli föråldrat i framtiden. Tekniken som vi undersökte och använde oss av var Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). I dagsläget är det endast ett fåtal applikationer som använder WPF men utvecklingsmetoden spås vara morgondagens sätt att programmera windowsapplikationer. För att vår meny skulle bli estetiskt tilltalande, enkel att använda och samtidigt funktionell så finns det inom interaktionsdesign klara riktlinjer om hur designutvecklingen bör gå till väga. Genom att nyttja de sex grundtankarna: att ett system ska vara effektivt, ha hög verkningsgrad, säkert att använda, vara användbart, enkelt att förstå samt okomplicerat; i designen och att bygga vidare med principerna så anser vi att vi har kunnat åstadkomma ett menysystem som kommer att se lika intressant och modern ut om 20 år som det gör nu. För att menyn skulle uppfylla de sex grundtankarna, bland annat att vara klart förståelig och enkel att använda så använde vi oss av de tankar och teorier som framgår i fysisk design.

Metodika výuky značkovacích jazyků / Markup languages educational methodology

The aim of this thesis is to develop an educational methodology for the following languages: Markdown, HyperText Markup Language (HTML), eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG); and to verify the methodology at Czech elementary schools on the lower secondary level. An integral part of the methodology is also an introduction to the history and development, as well as the theory of syntax of the mentioned markup languages, necessary for teaching according to this methodology. The methodology uses specific examples, on which the students can verify their newly acquired knowledge in practice. The verification of the methodology took place in the form of teaching at two Czech elementary schools. The teaching took place in the seventh grade within the compulsory elective subject of informatics, in the ninth grade within a compulsory subject. The expected differences in understanding the markup languages education in favor of the ninth year have not been confirmed. The motivation of the students proved to play much greater role than their age. The verification of the methodology has shown that it is necessary to pay careful attention to the precise formulation of the task assignments and guidelines to the students, to avoid confusion and substitution of the source code of the...
