TO / Epidemiology and study of the factors responsible for spongiosis ocular in the city of Araguatins TO

Silvio Carneiro da Cunha Filho 24 November 2010 (has links)
In October 2005 the notification of 17 cases of eyes disease of unknown etiology, involving, in its majority, the infant population of the city of Araguatins/TO, led the local authorities to ask help to the Secretariate of State of Health of the State of Tocantins in order to discover their etiology, treatment and prevention. In affected patients, the signs frequently observed were: intense hyperemia conjutival, granuloma, episclerite, peripheral cornea infiltrated. In the anamnesis performed in patients was observed that all of them had contact with the waters of the Araguaia river. The results obtained from processing samples of water, sediments and substrates particularly in the vegetation marginal flooded, allowed confirming the hypothesis that there should be a rich fauna sponges in Araguaia, close to the city of Araguatins The presence of spicula of intraocular sponge species of freshwater Drulia uruguayensis and Oncosclera navicela was confirmed in material evaluated histopathologically from three patients who had undergone lensectomy, suggesting that \"spikes freshwater could be a surprising new etiologic agent of pathology ocular\". Thus, in this study was performed cytotoxicity assays with samples from two species of sponges collected in place. The results indicate that the extracts of sponges after filtration Millipore 0.45 μm continued presenting cytotoxic activity, suggesting there is a SOLUBLE component, and not only spikes, capable of inducing cellular death in the population of cells used. The individuals affected were the majority of males aged between 05 and 14 years.

Koordinuotų žvilgsnio šuolinių judesių parametrai esant antriniams taikiniams (trikdžiams) / Parameters of coordinated saccadic movements in presence of non-targets (distracters)

Butvilas, Valdas 04 August 2011 (has links)
In this research distracter influence for saccadic eye movements was studied. In a series of experiments, participants reached to targets in the presence of visual distracters that were either adjacent to the target or either adjacent to the fixation point. Distracters were located through the reach path. The distracters were presented at different times too. The reaching eye movements were affected by the presence of the distracters The results showed that the distracters affects more horizontal eye movements. And the eyes movements are more affected when distracters were in a middle of path to the target.

Trauma and the psychological grotesque in the novels of Laura Hendrie, Laura Kasischke, and Gloria Naylor

Bliss, Adrienne L. January 2005 (has links)
This research uses the interpretive framework of the Psychological Grotesque to address a protagonist's response when she is unable to integrate the experience of interpersonal trauma into her psyche. The framework reveals a survival mechanism, identity incorporation, with roots in the transgressive and evolutionary nature of the grotesque as discussed in the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, Mary Douglas and Leonard Cassuto. The psychological grotesque is explicated using Stvgo by Laura Hendrie, The Life Before Her Eyes, by Laura Kasischke, and Linden Hills by Gloria Naylor. The psychological grotesque reveals how the protagonist within each of these novels, when positioned within a specific matrix of contributing factors engages in flawed survival strategies to reconcile psychic fragmentation. Drawing on theories of trauma from the work of Bessel Van Der Kolk, Dori Laub, Sigmund Freud, Mardi Horowitz, Ronnie Janoff-Bulman, Laurie Vickroy, Cathy Caruth, Peter Woods and Tim Middleton, the definition of the matrix includes: interpersonal trauma, prior history of emotional problems, no social support network, and self-perceived complicity in the violence. Where these criteria are present, the protagonist is incapable of achieving the repair of her damaged psyche in order to reintegrate into society and relief from the pain of trauma. In an effort to repair her brokeness through the incorporation of parts of the identity of others, the protagonist creates a grotesque mental hybrid living in fractured time. The protagonist experiences destabilization of time due to incorporating the temporal perspective of the other identities. A flawed survival strategy, identity incorporation leads to further psychic fragmentation. The psychological grotesque takes up the challenge of communicating the effects of trauma and addresses the lack of a literary interpretive mechanism for trauma literature in which a critical component of the narrative is the story of female victims of interpersonal violence. This framework confronts the fact that representations of women and trauma are problematic due to how trauma resists linguistic representation and because women have historically been denied a voice in the canon. Therefore, by drawing on elements of the grotesque, specifically hybridity and transgression, this interpretive framework recuperates the experiences of traumatized protagonists. / Department of English

Radhi, Yasser January 2016 (has links)

Approche contrastive et aspects transculturels de la communication multimodale en français et en espagnol / Contrastive approach and transcultural aspects of multimodal communication in French-speaking area and Spanish-speaking area

Tinchant, Sabine 02 December 2011 (has links)
We present a multimodal, contrastive and transcultural approach of the gesture space of French speaking area and Spanish-speaking area. We describe and analyse the gesture space on the one hand and on the other hand, the function of gesture, eyes directions and prosody in reformulation examples in French-speaking area and Spanish-speaking area.In each French or Spanish speaking area, we compare gesture space and reformulation in three different cultural areas : in French-speaking area, we compare the gesture space of French speakers of Metropolitan France, (Europe), Quebec speakers, (North America), Cajun speakers in Louisiana (North America) and in Spanish-speaking area, we compare the gesture space of Spanish speakers from Spain (Europe), speakers from Argentina (South America), speakers from Venezuela (South America). We analyse the differences and/or the similarities amongst speakers with a common language, either French or Spanish, but a different cultural environment. We decided to study gesture space and reformulation and recorded from a television corpus. Therefore, with this corpus,we can analyse gesture space speakers refering to the diagram “Division of the gesture space for transcription purposes” from Pedelty, which is presented in D. Mc Neill (1992). This diagram allows us to obtain a double reading of gesture space : on the vertical axis (trunk, head, beyondhead), on the horizontal axis (close to the body and far from the body). Afterwards, we analyse the function of gesture and eyes directions and their relationship with the intonative variations during the reformulation process in an oral interview. We analyse the functionof gesture amplitude and the function of catchments and growthpoints, studied by D. Mc Neill andM.A. Morel and their relationship with the function of eyes directions and the fundamentalfrequency (F0) variability with different examples of reformulation in the oral speech. Thereforewe analyse how these three modalities seem to have a double function to help the construction ofthe own speech and/or to help the intercomprehension, the mutual understanding in the coenunciativeprocess.

Decoding NOPD's Thin Blue Line

Harrington, Thomas 09 August 2017 (has links)
The New Orleans Police Department history dates back to the 1800’s. Since its inception, the department has been pledged by misconduct, low morale, and low public opinion. This research used Akers Social Structure, and Social learning theory or SSSL to understand the socialization process of the department and determine if the process could attribute for misconduct, the blue wall of silence, and the thin blue line. A case study was conducted in which twenty former NOPD officers on the department from 1979 to 2004 were interviewed. They were only identified by race, gender, and the number of years on the police department. The interviews were transcribed coded and two themes emerged: “Journey to Blue” and “Cop’s Eyes.” Journey to Blue, was the transformation process to become a police officer. The steps involved the hiring process, the police academy, field training officers (FTO), mentors, and the early years on the department. Cop’s Eyes was the process of seeing the world as a police officer. It was determined training, experience, and social integrity were integral parts of being able to see the world as a cop. Cop’s Eyes became the way an officer sees the world both on and off-duty, they were not able to turn it on or off. Further, it was determined, socialization changes throughout decades, socialization influences policy violations, and officers rarely if ever see corruption. The academy was the beginning of the development of cop’s eyes, and field training officers were the primary source of socialization both good and bad. Future research would involve duplicating and comparative analysis of twenty former NOPD officers who were involved in misconduct.
